Ah, Wallace. My first political experience was attending a Wallace campaign rally with my father in '68, at the tender age of ten. Those were the days. Even Nixon wasn't crazy enough for my old man. Do you think this will increase the value of my Wallace/LeMay campaign buttons? Maybe George Will would be interested in them.

I was 10 years old in '68 as well.
I remember how crazy those times were and how disgusting
Wallace was.I think Neil Young must have had him in mind
when he penned Southern Man.The racial hatred was still
pretty up front then. Its still here of course but more subtle
and insidious.Thats where creeps like Will come in I guess.

BaScOmBe's picture

what a fucking bigot.
just can't help himself.
he must come show that trent lott spoke for him, too!

just a little reminder of the racists in charge and how nothing will be done about it!

It is somewhat of a cringeworthy quote, but perhaps Will simply meant aggrieved (3) rather than aggrieved (1):

3) troubled; worried; disturbed; unhappy.

If he had replaced "aggrieved" with "disturbed" or "unhappy" (both synonyms of the word according to the dictionary), would we really be mad at the guy?

++++++++++++++++++
it ain't subtle any more! look at new orleans, the immigration bill, attacks on Obama!

It sure ain't subtle anymore.

The "minority" part can simply mean that a minority of people still supported segregation in 1968. Segregation wasn't too popular then, was it? If the majority of people didn't like it, well then by definition, only a minority *did* like it.

I think Will's word choice makes a good case that he's spent long stretches of time living under a rock, but technically, neither word is wrong.

Mr. Murdoch has flattered Communist Party leaders and done business with their children. His Fox News network helped China’s leading state broadcaster develop a news Web site. He joined hands with the Communist Youth League, a power base in the ruling party, in a risky television venture, his China managers and advisers say.

Mr. Murdoch cooperates closely with China’s censors and state broadcasters, several people who worked for him in China say. He cultivates political ties that he hopes will insulate his business ventures from regulatory interference, these people say.

I know - right! Who are these people awaiting for Hilton to get out. It's the people who run stupid shows like Access Hollywood. I'm awaiting all the people held on marijuana charges to be released. I'm waiting for the corporate elite to go to jail. I'm waiting for the Iraq war to end and our troops to come home. I'm waiting for Bush to be taken out of office by the Congress. I am NOT waiting for a bitch that has done nothing in her life to get out of jail. They can keep her there forever.

There is overreaction here. The article is about third party candidates; getting on a ballot when you need 66,000 signatures - 132,000 pages worth - in one state and almost 150,000 in another, all by hand, all in only a few weeks, that's an accomplishment. It's also an accomplishment that Hitler dismantled a major continental European country less than ten weeks.

It's not the point of the article to denounce Wallace's platform. This is what some of us like to call "knee-jerking."

American Psycho's picture

I also found out that Bush appointed a family friend to be the head of the SEC. Probably to cover up all of the stock activity before that terrible day.

-remember my Dad telling me a joke that Johnny Carson told, that Wallace would "call a spade a spade." Wallace later saw the light and learned how to get elected by black voters, and advised Jessie Jackson to send out his message "down low so even the goats can reach it." I believe that the world is probably better off for his not being elected president, along with his running mate, retired General Curtis LeMay, who advocated using nuclear weapons to "bomb Viet Nam back to the stone age."

George Will is one of those "swaydo" intellectuals that Wallace talked about. He's an intellectually dishonest and pathetic hack whose only skill is making affectations of gravitas. What a self-important little douchebag!

I remember Wallace. He was all about racial hatred and exploiting the racial hatred of his supporters in order to secure power for himself. That he later apologized toward the very end of his life, does not undo the harm and the misery he let lose in the world.

High Schoolers Get In Bush's Face About Torture

WASHINGTON — President Bush was presented with a letter Monday signed by 50 high school seniors in the Presidential Scholars program urging a halt to "violations of the human rights" of terror suspects held by the United States.

The White House said Bush had not expected the letter but took a moment to read it and talk with a young woman who handed it to him.

"The president enjoyed a visit with the students, accepted the letter and upon reading it let the student know that the United States does not torture and that we value human rights," deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.

The students had been invited to the East Room to hear the president speak about his effort to win congressional reauthorization of his education law known as No Child Left Behind.

The handwritten letter said the students "believe we have a responsibility to voice our convictions."

"We do not want America to represent torture. We urge you to do all in your power to stop violations of the human rights of detainees, to cease illegal renditions, and to apply the Geneva Convention to all detainees, including those designated enemy combatants," the letter said.

whats the hidden reasons for shoveing this amnisty bill up our asses ? if they dont pass it soon are the elegals going to try to excape back across the border? kennedy lott bush the democratic party whats the payoff ,you got to know its got nothing to do with any benifits for the average citizen or they wouldnt even be bothering with it! of all the things that need to be done this is the best the politicians got for us? this bill will mean the end of any chance for national health care and could spell the end of social security for the elderly, last week i said that they are going to get this bill passed even if the american people are against it, these politicians who sell us out on this bill deserve to be voted out of office , bush goes to see these turds in the senate and prommises money to close off the border , sure you bet , this is just the start of destroying the borders completly for all times, the day will come soon when thoes semi trucks this government wants in here from mexico will be loaded with mexicans not merchandise , and america will just be a shell of the north american union, just like the bush gang is pushing for, its all smoke and mirrors desighned to destroy our middle class welcome to the new inslaved citizens who look more like china then the good old usa!

Tim in Japan-

No, the youth of today are absolutely not as bad as they're reputed to be. Every generation deems the subsequent one(s) for the ills of the world- it's the oldest complaint in the history of mankind.

Our youth are very bright, and they are on to this administration's attempt to dumb them down. My kid-brother is 15, and before I even had time to explain to him what the Military Commissions Act meant to civil liberties, he asked me if I knew that "BushCo" had just signed into law a document that would make torture legal. Around that time, his principal/priest went to Washington to discuss with the administration the accomplishments of Catholic Schools in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina, and my brother hoped it would be an opportunity for his classmates to express their outrage over state-sanctioned torture, other human rights violations and the whittling away of our American civil liberties.

Which, unfortunately did not happen, but still I was so proud!

I can't tell you how many times he's come home and told me of his class' discussions and that he could not think of one person who supported this administration. There is a resounding disapproving anger and frustration among these youngsters, and I suspect that is a very broad sentiment.

Never underestimate our youth- especially this up and coming group- they are the ones who will start the next revolution, at least according to generational cycles.

MacDaffy's picture

I was nine when George Wallace said "Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever." That year, my mom took my little brother and me to see her ailing mother in Georgia. I can still remember how terrified I was when my little brother wandered into the Whites Only waiting area of the Birmingham, Ala. train station; I thought the police were going to kill him. Five years later, the American Independent Party brought George Wallace's special brand of sweetness and light to my hometown in Calfornia. A junior in high school, I knew exactly what their posters and their pronouncements in interviews meant.

George Wallace's "aggrieved minority" swept Richard Nixon into the White House that year. They made Ronald Reagan's sunny racism popular. That "aggrieved minority" is the tool by which the current administration has brought low our moral standing in the world as well as our reputation and our bank balance. George Will was one of the leeches that fed on the "aggrieved minority." He hasn't changed.

I said as much in the comments section of Will's piece, but I think the screeners at NewsWeek are a little busy right now..

jcasey's picture

Will is about as bad as it gets among Washington punditry: he has the aurora of auctoritas, he consistently asserts things that are false, and he argues fallaciously for preposterous conclusions. I continually ask myself why people think he's respectable. This Wallace piece ought to mean something to those few who appreciate his "intellectual honesty."
