Sen. Lugar calls for a course change in Iraq

lugar-richard.jpg On Monday, Republican Senator Richard Lugar called for a course change in Iraq and goes after Bush and his policy. Harry Reid came out in support of Lugar, but wonders if other Republicans will get with it too...

I like the White House response to Lugar that CNN throws on as an afterthought at the end of the clip. Here's Lugar's entire speech.

Sen. Warner supports him too and a few others, but realistically does anyone believe these Bushbots will actually do anything constructive to end this war and get the troops out of there?

TProgress:

Lugar “just told reporters that the White House called him to ask for a meeting. Lugar would not say who he is meeting with or when it would happen, but all indications are that it will be National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley and it will take place later in the week.

What a statesman!

Let's see...he's as old as Methusaleh, he's close to retiring. He has no political capital to spend.

He's NOTHING. He's just playin' the game.

How much under the table money did he get to make that little speech?

Heh...let's see Ruppert Murdoch, the heads of all the oil companies, Bush senior, Cheney, members of Carlyle Group, Blackstone Group, Goldman Sachs, etc etc.

Tell me the course change is a U-turn and I'm for it.

American Psycho's picture

I have a change of course plan, how about sending our troops on a course leading directly back home to the USA!

I would expect Lugar to back down or revise his statement and point of view in the next few days or weeks.
If Lugar does not comply with Bush, then the dirt on Lugar will be out in the open for all to see, and you can kiss that retirement money good-bye Lugar. It's that simple.

BaScOmBe's picture

so now the end of the war in iraq will be a repug idea?

it's a pity that the thugs who supported this carnage will be given credit for opposing bush before the election and it will be forgotten that the enabled and supported the shrub uintil this year.

I just hope the shrub goes along his merry way, ignoring the change-of-heart repugs. maybe that will force the repugs to consider impeaching dastardly duo in the wh, even while nancy says it's not on the table.

and the dems will lose another bunch of elections because they play politics and thwart the will of the american people right along with the repugs.

American Psycho's picture

One other thing. Isn't anyone else getting annoyed with the republican response that if we set time tables we will be alerting the enemy. Since when do we have to annouce a time table publically. This is the most secretive administration in our countries history so they should be pretty good at keeping a troop withdrawal date a secret also. I mean they act like there will be billboards around Iraq announcing our withdrawal.

A big rat jumps ship and cheney decides he wants to go rat hunting. Be careful Sen. Lugar!

miss_kitty's picture

Where was he 5 and a half years or so ago?

Thanks for playin' Lugar.

Good point BaScOmBe, watch this backfire on the ball less Democrats. If it does, they deserve it. I don't really care as long as our troops are brought home soon.

I see another posturing repug trying to position himself for 2008 on the "I opposed the shrub" platform. If the boosh cronies have anything "negative" to say about him now, it will be forgotten by 2008.

Thats true miss kitty! Where have the republicans been the past 6 years, oh I forgot they were a rubber stamp for the president. But hey we all know it's all about getting re-elected and if more republicans want to jump on the "end the war" bandwagon more power to them as long as it gets our troops out of Iraq and Bush's miserable failure in the desert!

He will go to the White House.

Rove will open a file folder in front of him with pictures, arrest records, business records, court records, birth certificates, etc. related to his and his family's indiscretions.

Bush will enter the room and tell the senator, "You can see you are fucked. You will turn around and go back to the senate and announce everything is perfect in Iraq or everything you and your family have worked for for 50 years will go up in flames. Fuck you. Goodbye." Bush will leave the room without further comment.

Rove will re-enter, take up the file, slap Lugar across the face and tell him, "Get with the fucking program, asshole" before leaving the room.

I have been annoyed with that and the thousand other fallacies spewing from the rethugs. boehner's tears made me want to hit the screen with a brick. I'll never forget the hateful hypocrisy of these people.

You mean Lugar is going to pull a classic Arlen Specter where he talks tough against the president one day and then retracts what he said a couple of days later like a beaten little dog?

wow, lugar you're just about *checks watch* 4 years too late. fucking pathetic that this is even a news item. the GOP has sold america's national security for a handful of magic beans and karl rove's used panties.

I agree, Boehners fake tears and emotion should have earned him a grammy. I was wondering if he had an onion in his breast pocket or if KKKarl Rove was hunched below the podium setting Boehners foot on fire.

Not that I think he won't back down, but Lugar is probably as squeeky clean as they come. Maybe, just maybe, it won't be quite this simple.

Any public rift in the GOP ranks is a good thing. Half the appeal of the party is its ability to march in lockstep. Among their brain-dead supporters, anything resembling a choice is likely to induce anxiety and panic. Karl Rove understands this and has done everything he can to keep GOP congressmen from going off the reservation. If Luger can stand up to the pressure, he'll be joined by other desperate Repukes.

But, but, if we leave the enemy will follow us home!!! Isn't the department of homeland unsecurity supposed to keep us safe?

I mean are we to believe that the terrorists are going to jump on ships, planes, canoes, kayaks and invade us?

But, but, because we are fighting them over there, the big bad terrorists are just focusing on killing us over there.

Sure like the terrorists can't multi-task or are unable to plan another attack inside of our country while they are fighting us in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But, but, Bush said this is a global war against civilization, terrorism is a big threat to our safety here at home.

If Bush was sooo serious about fighting the war on terrorism and keeping us safe at home why then is only 5% of all incoming cargo inspected at our seaports? Why do our chemical plants and nuclear power plants remain unsecure AND why have our borders remain wide open?

I've noted that Lugar, Warner, and Doolittle are all doing it.

I'm not sure if anybody else mentioned this, but these guys never talk about completely leaving Iraq. They still plan on leaving some troops there. After all this effort we have to make sure we don't lose the oil money. If Hillary gets the presidency, do you think she will withdraw ALL the troops?..I would be curious to see what folks think.

Gasho's picture

Hate to piss off everyone here, but I'm pissed as hell about the wreckage Bush has caused, I'm a lefty for sure, but what the speech ACTUALLY SAYS is the best I've heard yet.

Political cover, talking point of the week, whatever...

This speech, and especially the way in which he points out the bogus dichotomy of "stay the course" and "precipitous withdrawl" is important. Listen to what he says before jumping on him for being a republican. He says we need diplomacy - we need to talk to all the countries in the region. In order to talk, we have to chill out millitarily. He says the war has caused huge damage to our reputation and our ability to constructively hold negotiations. He talks about oil dependence and our need to increase fuel economy. He talks about solving the Arab-Isreal conflict as a necessary step to calming tensions.

He may be a republican, and he may have supported the war in the past, but isnt' that all the more reason to SUPPORT his current stance ?? Damn, if Hillary or Obama said anything as coherent as this speech, I'd be impressed.

a guy's picture

Blah Blah Blah. "The Iraq policy is irresponsible...Bush is wrong...we need to draw down our troops." But when push comes to shove, ORF's (Old Republican Fossils) like Lugar, Specter, McCain and the like will follow this president right over the cliff like lemmings and drag our country with them if they can. Period.

As a Hoosier ex-pat (yes, its just a Granfalloon), who has met Lugar, I have been very disappointed in him of late. He and other cloth-coats have been silent, intimidated by the BushCo authoritarian machine. Dick's party is a shambles. They lost my father long ago for everyone except support for Lugar, and what is there to show for it? Nada.

Dick, you and the old guard had better stand up and tall if you are to salvage anything at all from the wreckage that Bush, Cheney, Rove and the Neocons have made of everything.

Just look at the mouth on this Douche Bag . . . . . the man looks like a ventriloquist's Dummy . . .

Robt's picture

That is it.!

Lugar is just now saying it. And the White House says Lugar had reservations for some time?

It is Lunacy that Luger held on to Republicanism instead of America's interest. Now Lugar can go hunting with Dick Cheney. Lugar cared nothing of holding true to Habeas Corpus. He cares nothing that the Vice President is mentally ill with secrecy paranoia while they frivolously spy on Americans without cause or warrant.

Lugar, you are late to the democracy. I don't think Luger believes in democracy at all. As long as his party and himself does well. And to think I served and fought for this country and for all Americans. I sadly can only rationalize my sacrifice by means of defining Luger and his ilk as not American.
