PSoTD listens to Lugar and says Grow up, America.
Steve Soto is hopeful that the dam has broken with Lugar's statement.
Kiko's House - Christie Whitman: Hypocrite & Prevaricator (and the Rude Pundit has a mouthful to say on this one too).

Over at Comments From Left Field, they're losing IQ points reading the WSJ on Gitmo...so that you don't have to.
The All Spin Zone - Bush was handed a petition by 50 High School kids yeaterday, saying they don't want America to be a nation of torturers. There is still hope. Some sane conservatives still exist, thankfully.
Here's James Joyner on the reporter who wants out of Afghanistan and wants to blame the Dems for it, and Steven Taylor pointing out that the White House defense of Cheney amounts to "I don’t know if this is my wife or not."
Texas Liberal, though, is having trouble with not-so sane conservatives and bumper stickers.

Lugar's speech is yesterday's news.
He's an impotent old fool. No one is paying attention. Even IF I thought his intentions were good, and I don't, his speech was pointless.
I've read over that exchange with Dana Perino numerous times.
Bottom line, "the Supreme Court agreed with the Vice President". Game over.
This is more diversionary shit. Something else is going on here.
dang it- what's wrong with liberal texan's page?
Judge: No bond for Genarlow Wilson
Hearing canceled; ruling could keep him in jail for months
By JEREMY REDMON
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/27/07
A Douglas County Superior Court judge says Genarlow Wilson is not eligible for bond in his child molestation case, a new development that could keep Wilson behind bars for several months to come pending an appeal in his case.
Judge David Emerson issued an order Wednesday canceling a July 5 bond hearing for Wilson.
"As the court has no authority to grant an appeal bond in this case, there is no need for an evidentiary hearing on the defendant's eligibility for a bond," Emerson wrote in his three-page order. "The motion for bond is dismissed. The hearing scheduled for July 5, 2007, is therefore cancelled."
Have any of y'all ever noticed that with a single consonant change, Vanna White would be a bowel movement?
"Essentially, it's a call for Americans to grow up, for partisans to grow up, to realize just how fucked up a situation we're in now, and that we can't rely on partisan battle cries to get us out of it." - PSoTD
I would love some continuity with this theme from C&L.
Can I get an amen?
Aperson!
A qualified amen - this is the part that struck me:
"And so, someone has to bullypulpit the news media to grow up, do its job and report the news that is important, discuss the future that is important, and reduce the mindboggling crap they've become addicted to pushing."
PNAAC Minister @ 8:

we act like they are not doing it of their own volition. Not so! They are doing what they want to do(timmeh russert/potatoeHead and coulter matthews) or what they are directed to do(fux, msnbc excepting KO, cnn and the other msm).
"Bush was handed a petition by 50 High School kids yeaterday, saying they don’t want America to be a nation of torturers. There is still hope. Some sane conservatives still exist, thankfully."
Chimp has probably handed that letter over to the same 'people' who took care of that high school kid with the “Bong Hits 4 Jesus” banner. Don’t be surprised if 50 kids aren’t arraigned in front of the Supreme Court in a few months and also have their ACT and SAT scores mysteriously tampered with to reflect a lower score.
Liberal AND Proud @ 1:

It was clearly FAO, For Appearances Only. The msm hands him a mike, opposition to bush is announced, and later the repugts get to platform that they were opposed to it. Any mention of earlier complicity in the destruction of this country will be omitted henceforth.
It's just not comprehendable to me why these f**kers won't give us the facts as they know them instead of trying to parse every word, sentence and paragraph. We The People deserve more. There is no end to the officials and media that should be tried for treason.

who will lose a job now that the shrub has been publicly pruned?
I am personally proud of those kids!
I'm not sure that Lugar's motivations matter. As long as the MSM continues to present the story as repugs 'breaking ranks" with the preznit, it's a good thing.
Oh. Like when they broke ranks on last year...and the year before that...and the year before that...
then Bushco wields it's mighty "Dick" and everyone falls back in line.
I hope those kids were wearing flip-flops for their visit to see the Chimp! Show no respect for this moron.
There are more cracks in the dike than ever before, but we'll see if anything's really changed in September.
I'm not really interested in the cracks of dykes.
You don't think Rosie O'Donnell's funny either?
This Is Not Lugar's Idea
So now big Dick Lugar is the man of the hour. He has the plan every senator and congressperson will listen to because it's a Republican plan. Guest what the media is complicit in treating this as if we never heard this suggestion before. Recall John Murtha's plan in November of 2005?
Murtha wanted the troops to withdraw and be redeployed in a more effective safer role. Isn't that about the jest of what Lugar was saying in his speech? So why all the hype as something in the realm of an addition to our constitution?
The control afforded the Republican Party has is an unfair advantage. When the conservative media can turn on the credit when they need it and turn it off when they want to overlook something, we have a problem that has given the right too much power. The media is the forth branch of government not Dick Chaney. This body has far to much persuasion power.
Since Fox news, all the cable network have become wantabees, not because they agree with their philosophies, because they want the viewing segment that generate advertising dollars. Yes, this too is about money. What surprise me the most was the fact that so many viewers really took Fox news serious. There are millions of people who think news is related to blond blue eyes male/female commentators with an occasionally Black, Chinese and Latin commentator to make things look divers. It is a surface show of untold proportions made for those who will not check to see if the news they are watching have any sound merit to it.
Again, stop and think about the power advantage the media has in being able turn on and off variables like legitimacy and character credit. The number of conservative network make this a problem that can only be corrected by returning the Fairness Doctrine.

Hey, maybe Americans aren't so goddamned stupid after all!
http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/27/poll.gay/index.html
Interesting that so many of the anti-gay policies currently in place do NOT reflect the will of the people.
79% of Americans believe that openly gay people should be allowed to serve in the military. Look at that number again! 79%! Hooray for progress!

What's sad with Lugar is that so many Republicans (and some Dems) still feel they need cover to discuss Iraq as adults.
Whitman could have decent, but she failed a crucial test of conscience (as did Powell and others), and it's cost people their health and lives (as with Powell and others, although the chief villains are still Cheney, Bush, Rove and the gang).
I'm wondering, can the endangered species of sane conservatives actually speak up, or perhaps take over their party? Most of their policies still stink, but they're better than the current authoritarian, militant zealot crew.
Taranto's WSJ op-ed is abhorrent, as usual. But remember, kids, the U.S. never makes mistakes and arrests innocent people! They had it coming!
As for Cheney - he's obviously full of crap as usual. The only principle is that he'll BS to get his way, even if that way is disastrous, as it usually is. The "I don't know if this is my wife or not" defense certainly is consistent with their Valerie Plame Wilson defense!
There's a slight formatting error in the post. The words "Some sane conservatives still exist, thankfully." should attach to the next paragraph, where James Joyner and Steven taylor, sane conservatives, are linked.
I agree with Batocchio, it's difficult for folks like them to speak out against the less-sane cheerleaders without getting a hail of s**t directed their way. Look at the way Greg Djerjian or John Cole got treated. But folks, one day the Dems too will need a "loyal opposition" if debate isn't to become unipolar and these guys are it.
I may not agree with all their policies but I recognise they want open and democratic government and want to be involved in that. They may not agree with all of my ideas, but they see the same thing on my part. It's a start on clawing back the U.S. as it should be.

Cernig at 23:
Thanks for the clarification. I know some sane conservatives as friends and family, and tend to agree. It's the dead-ender Bushie authoritarian conservatives that I can't make peace with, because they will never make peace with anyone else and will continue to create disasters wherever they go. It's pointless trying to talk to someone who still insists Iraq was responsible for 9/11 and all liberals are traitors who hate America, etc.
I think, looking over the last century or so, that the U.S. has fared best when the balance of power has been left of center, and when sane conservatives have played a gadfly role. When conservatives as a whole have ruled the roost unchecked, or otherwise had power - especially the current movement - it's been horrendous. Given the massive inequiity in wealth distribution and power in the U.S., and the quality of our social services compared to other industrialized nations, it's no surprise that many conservative policies do not further the public good, and of course, conservative think tanks are happy to deceive, lie, or spin to make our current set-up even more lopsided. I really try to distinguish between hacks and honest folks, but the sad reality is that the overwhelming majority of conservative pundits are out and out hacks, which again, isn't surprising given what they're defending or promoting. Sane conservatives deserve a voice, but let's be honest, they need to grab control of their own damn party, and even then, America's safest when they're the minority party in government.
