Atrios:

WASHINGTON — Facing eroding support for his Iraq policy, even among Republicans, President Bush on Thursday called al Qaida "the main enemy" in Iraq, an assertion rejected by his administration's senior intelligence analysts.

The reference, in a major speech at the Naval War College that referred to al Qaida at least 27 times, seemed calculated to use lingering outrage over the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to bolster support for the current buildup of U.S. troops in Iraq, despite evidence that sending more troops hasn't reduced the violence or sped Iraqi government action on key issues.

U.S. military and intelligence officials, however, say that Iraqis with ties to al Qaida are only a small fraction of the threat to American troops. The group known as al Qaida in Iraq didn't exist before the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, didn't pledge its loyalty to al Qaida leader Osama bin Laden until October 2004 and isn't controlled by bin Laden or his top aides.

He keeps trying to make the connection. President Cheney must be pleased. Here's more...

Here's a 29%-er story for y'all. I went to "A Mighty Heart" with a friend of mine, a 24 year old female. I adore her, and have nothing bad to say about her. But she thinks that George Bush is a "good man". She likes his "morals". I should mention that I live in (not born in) Oklahoma. Bless her heart. But she doesn't know shit about what's going on in the world. While we were watching the movie, I had to explain what Moussad was and why it was bad that the terrorists thought Daniel Perl was Moussad. Okay, that didn't surprise me too much. But here's the kicker ... a little bit after, she looked at me and said, "So do Muslims and Jews not like each other?" Aye caramba. So it's obvious all she's really heard is the propaganda that GWB is a Christian. (if only he were)

I love her; but I share this story because it underscores part of where the 29% come from. She's a wonderful girl with a good heart. She's not stupid, ignorant to world events, yes. But the reason she thinks George Shithead Bush is so great, is that she actually knows nothing about him.

I don't really bother debating politics with her, because she couldn't bring any facts to the discussion. Anyway, when you live in Oklahoma, you learn to just not talk about politics.

One of them said he was going to join the National Guard. The other said he was thinking about it too. I said why do you want to do that if you are so against the war. The one guy said, "The National Guard aren't being sent to the war, just the army and marines. First off, Osama bin Laden has been dead for over five years. He passed away of natural causes in late December 2001 in a mountainous area of Afghanistan. See: http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/osama_dead.html.

With the everready war and infinite-occupation-cheerleader Bush, everything's coming up al-Queda. Just sing along with the Bush-bot: "Al-queda in the morning, al-Queda in the evening, al-Queda at suppertime..."

It has been a truly pathetic spectacle over the last six years: a proud modern country of some three hundred million people, scared shitless by a few hundred ragged terraists... Pathetic beyond belief. We have to surrender our 200+ year old traditions of democracy with our Bill of Rights and our Constitutions to a small gang of right-wing scare-mongers let by Cheney, Rumsfeld, Bush, et al ad nauseum.

It's obvious. Al Qaeda has taken over. Completely.

They command the low ground. They command the middle ground. And, what little there is of it, they command the high ground.

No decision can be made without considering the enormous effect of, and on, Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is the be-all and end-all, there is no nook nor cranny they do not command.

But now Al Qaeda has a quandry. Now that they control it all, what in hell are they going to do with Bush's Brain?

It's a useless landscape of devastation, with no functioning purpose, barely able to survive, full of weird twists and turns, beyond the understanding of the sane, suitable only as a playground for the irrational, the perverted, the fable-fond, fiction-addicted, morbidly self-absorbed navel-lint pickers of the crazy-christian-evangelical-fundamentalist rapture-seeking failures, unable to perceive, much less comprehend, rationality or reason.

So Al Qaeda has won. Complete domination. Mission Accomplished.

But how hollow a victory. What have they won? A vast wasteland, Bush's Brain.

So Pakistan. Why are not worried?
The ISI, Pakistani version of the CIA, created the Taliban in the nineties. Musharaff came to power via a coup in 1999. During the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001, Rumsfeld let the ISI airlift out most of the Taliban. We let UBL (osama bin laden) run across the border and set up camp in Pakistan. UBL has a widespread base of support there and a significant, maybe a majority, of the population wants a religious theocracy, based on UBL teachings. The rest of the country wants liberal socialism with strong independent government institutions. Musharaff is about to be overthrown, soon. He will lose the next election, unless he clamps down militarily. If he does, you can kiss the liberal Pakistan good bye, the UBL guys will fight and the liberals will join with the UBL boys. If Musharaff falls, and UBL's boys take power, THAT MEAN UBL HAS FUKING MISSLE NUKES. Not just the simple stuff, no no, this is grade A American made missile nukes! And, and, it gets worse, Pakistan is in a hot and cold territory war with India, who has missile nukes. I love how we all chatter about, Iran is the next big conflict. Fuk that, there is an election coming up in Pakistan that could very well arm our worst enemy with medium range ballistic nukes.

They can't even discuss one, or introduce any facts that make the President look bad. We're getting the buildup (against the generals' advice) because that leaner, meaner stuff was Rummy's fault. But even now, with the casualty rate as high as its ever been, there's no discussion of what to do when it doesn't work. Loyalty trumps all.

Al Queida, Qaida, however it is spelled, is a FRANCHISE... As such, it can be where ever, and perhaps when ever. It was designed to be that way. And the machinations of this administration have only aided that design.

Summary of Bush's speech:
Thanks followed by warm up joke.
Suck up to audience
9/11 and change in our strategy.
Iraq and how change in strategy is working.
Toss RI Governor a bone.
Welcome to 4 Republican Governors (must be time to pay those repub dues).
New strategy, new people, new mission... same Bushshit in charge.
Which, if it doesn't work, then it's the fault of those new people.
3rd use of new new-speak: "reinforcements". American's are just reinforcements to help the Iraqi. (Who we knocked down in the first place.)
Iraq, al Qaeda, 9/11 Oh My!
Story time. We have this captured document that says al Qaeda wants Anbar. Turn what was said in a leaked report where the military said United States had "lost" Anbar and attribute it to a columnist summary of the report. Not so because we have the Babil Awakening. (Or is it Anbar Awakening? No matter.) That proves we're succeding.

Well that the first 10 or so paragraphs.

How many times did Bush mention that it's been years since he swore to get bin Laden, dead or alive? Zero? You mean, he's wasted all these lives and money, and the actual guy who was responsible for 9.11 is STILL FREE? And he's hardly been looking for him?

How about we get somebody who's got brains and guts to be in charge? Not a cowardly, posturing idiot who hasn't got the slightest capacity for empathy for other human beings.

I agree with a previous poster that every single time this administration feels pressure, regardless of what it is, the Al Qaeda or mushroom cloud spectre is invoked. And usually, and conveniently, a terror plot is busted, and the media falls all over itself to talk about that instead of talking about the corruption in Washington. I hate to say it, but I would not put anything past these criminals who ignore the laws and don't care about anything except their "images" and their precious parties. They pretend to care about the American people, but the truth is they are traitors to the country, little boys playing games.

Tom Doff @ 69:

A vast wasteland, Bush's Brain.

lol lol lol

That is one very creative and entertaining picture you've painted.

As an update, it'd be nice to see that YouTube vid of Bush explaining how he "catapults the propaganda"

He needs al-qaeda right now. An al qaeda attack on US soil would be the only thing capable of reviving his poll numbers.

Fuk that, there is an election coming up in Pakistan that could very well arm our worst enemy with medium range ballistic nukes.

*Our* worst enemy? Riiiight. How far can those missles fly, again?

I was 1 of about 200 protestors in Newport that day.
Our protest was for the most disorganized but totally undereported.
Bush's helicopter flew above us and I had a gut feeling it was him but I was told by my fruends it's just a security copter.
The next days article proved me right.
We have a list of dfemands for the anti war movement with hundreds of signatures on the back poster, mine being the second one.
It was rejected at the gate of the academy and we now are having it mailed to the white house.

Bush mentions al Qaida 27 times in latest Iraq speech

[...]The reference, in a major speech at the Naval War College that referred to al Qaida at least 27 times, seemed calculated to use lingering outrage over the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, to bolster support for the current buildup of U.S. troo...

What else should we expect from a president that was not even elected fairly, and is only just literate...
