Man we were sure coooool back then. I looked like a heavier version of the guy at the second part that stopped in front of the camera. Oh to have hair again. I just found out I didn't have to report for the draft. Great 4th that year.
Kirk @ 8:
I don't even know how to respond to that!
Are you trying to be funny or do you reall believe that there are facts on Conservapedia?
Conservapedia only has facts. It has been proven, on the other hand, that Wikipedia is nothing more than a partisan propaganda machine.
I see your labotomy was a success.
PS - check out Watergate on Conserva...........
The Watergate scandal was overblown by partisan politics. The fact is that Nixon never authorized that break in and, in fact, had integrity enough not to pardon any of the overzealous underlings that took it upon themselves to embarrass the White House. That's in sharp contrast with Bill Clinton's pardons at the end of his presidency.
...and as Nixon gave his talk, the Democrats were nominating an anti-war hero of WWII, who although unsuccessful in the election, was, of course, right...
God! I remember thinking, "What a clownish outfit! And ain't that just like Nixon to try to co-opt our bicentennial...." Watching his 1971 State of the Union Address, I had been shocked to realize he was lying. I seriously didn't like him already, but it had never occurred to me until that moment that a government official of any kind, let alone the president, would lie. So, by the time this report came along, I had nothing but negative feelings about him. Still, as much as I hated Nixon, I don't think I ever knew the passion with which I could despise a president, anyone in the government, until recent years. I DON'T THINK AMERICANS SHOULD EVER LET IT GET THIS BAD, LET THE CRIMINALITY CONTINUE THIS LONG! Pretending it isn't this bad, or that there is any way to deal with this state of affairs that is mild and dignified, amounts to treason. Those are not Americans in the 110th Congress. They are traitors.
Hey Kirk what ever your smokin I want some. In case you forgot or were young at the time, Howard Baker was a republican and had a lot of friends that were pissed at the administration. Do you have any idea how many republicans were going along with the democrats? It was a slam dunk, that is why Nixon quit. If the republicans today had a moral or honest bone in their bodies they would be all over these guys too. Hopefully they won't wake up till after the next election. Right now some of them want to jump on Bush but are hesitating. Democrats in all three and appointing supreme court judges. Set the republicans back a generation.

Would you be speaking of the pardon of Marc Rich, the one that Scooter Libby petitioned for?
Most people, even Clinton supporters, didn't like the Rich pardon.
Still, Rich didn't commit treason or endanger national security like Bush, Cheney, Armitage, Rove, Libby, etc.....................
And you're right, at least Nixon had the decency to step down, unlike the current crook in chief and his side-kick the Chimp!

I was actually talking about Clinton pardoning his son. The one that tried that "Billy Beer" thing. I think that nepotism is disgraceful.

No. When I remember this guy and Cronkite and Huntley and Brinkley, we had some honest to god news reporters and there was at least some ethics in Washington. The public tuned in like a soap opera. People took off work to watch. If Nixon hadn't quit, there was a likely chance that he might have ended up where his friends went. This case was a huge shock to the public. They couldn't believe the republicans did this. Boy times have changed. P.S. we had a real justice department also back then.

Uhg. You could have been more polite, but I just realized that I got my presidents mixed up. I'm getting old. Who was the guy that helped Clinton bury Vince Foster? That's the guy I was thinking of. I can't seem to find the name now. I thought he was related to either Bill Clinton or Hillary Clinton. O'Reilly had a show on him once.
Heck, the Watergate hearings were on in our office every day so some of us could try to squeeze some work in. The day Spiro Agnew resigned, the senior partner threw the entire contents of his llth floor office out the window (furniture excluded) in his glee. Everyone... right or left... high or low... wanted those crooks out of the White House. White House Counsel, John Dean refused to lie for Nixon, went in front of Congress and came clean. I still revere him because of that. Contrast it with this gang. Pfeh.

Too bad, it would be nice to clear Nixon's name once and for all. I know what you mean about the Justice Department. They just don't want to prosecute illegal aliens at all. That's why we just have to gut the department.
In case you have forgotten, Nixon's nick name was tricky dick. Only a time machine will clear his name. Go back and call the cops and have them waiting outside. Where is the Dean in this administration?

Typical republican, having illegal fireworks, what laws do they obey?
Didn't you know? They are above the law? The "law" is for little people. [deleted--do not advocate violence upon anyone on this site. You should tune your irony meter to be able to recognize the parody trolls a little quicker.]
Ahhh....7/2/72 By then about 50 some thousand American soldiers had died, and oh, about 2 or 3 million Vietnamese. But lets not talk about that when the surge is going so well. It wouldnt be patriotic.
By then about 50 some thousand American soldiers had died.
Incorrect. 50 some thousand American peasants had died. As we all know, our American royalty such as Herr Bush, Herr Cheney and the rest of their cabinet of Brownshirts wouldn't stoop to serve their country. It's their country that will serve THEM...right?

The crew that were in charge when Kent State happened were the same people that said that rock & roll was the devils music.
I can't remember anyone listening to the kind of music they were playing in the park. Closest was the Charlie Daniels Band. We were all in a trance over Led Zeppelin.
Agghhh! Yes! The two variations...If you were paying attention to the soft-core bigotry of the broadcast. "Two very different ways to celebrate the 4th"
Distant shots of black men standing behind prison walls listening to music and playing games
&
close ups on the faces of young white hippies lounging in a park, holding babies, riding bikes, and listening to folk music.
I'd say it was the station producers that were dropping acid on that day.
I liked the part about Nixon's confidence that he would be presiding over the bicentennial celebration. Neither he nor his vice president were around for that event. Spiro Agnew had resigned for taking bribes and Nixon had resigned after the House Judiciary Committee voted articles of impeachment (with several Republicans voting to impeach). Sen. Goldwater and some other Republican heavy hitters went to visit Nixon to tell him the Senate would vote to convict, so the president realized his only chance to save his pension was to submit his resignation, which he did in August 1974.
These days the Congress no longer has enough honest Republicans to tell the president he's broken too many laws and ought to get out of town, so we can expect a slow, painful, lingering lameduck period. Ugh.
What day? July 4, 1972? Must have been an important day for you to have remembered that.
I remember the day Nixon resigned. I watched the resignation speech live. I was 14. I couldn't get over how quiet and sombre my Dad, a Nixon supporter, was. Even in Canada, Watergate was a big deal.
It almost looks like everyone (except the guard) in prison is black, and everyone attending the freedom celebration is white. I wonder how much of that is photographer/editor bias and how much is simply the demographics of each location.
The most memorable quote by Richard Nixon:
"If the president does it, it can't be against the law (or illegal)."
Which left everyone sputtering in disbelief when he said it.
Yeah - but by the time he said this (to David Frost in 1977), Nixon was a disgraced nobody and Ford had lost the White House to a Democrat.
Nixon had been destroyed by the law, so it was pathetic for him to talk about executive infallibility.
Today, Cheney does whatever he wants, burns the records, gets Bushie to excuse his lackey's jail sentence, and no one stops him. Cheney is Nixon's dream come true.
Don't forget, the Attica riot was only one year before, which gives a lot more signifigance to the footage from there. Now if I could only figure out who those cats that are playing there were....cool!
Hm, this Kirk guy is making it more and more apparent that somehow, despite all of our gizmos and gadgets and modern medicinal sciences, we are actually reverting to a time where you'd hear people in controlled circles spew flagrant inaccuracies because of a cult-like alliance to a group thought.
folks, welcome back to "The Earth Is Flat" territory... We learned nothing from what was done to Galileo.
Book burning should be just around the corner, the more you have people sneering so badly at opposing messages that the basic respect for universal objects and points of authority is in jeopardy.
Kewl.

Maybe because Veteran's Day is Nov 11?

Nowadays, the drug companies would never let NBC news show a cultural event that long without one of their commercials.
