On this slow news day-- a somewhat mournful Independence Day two days after the mask of constitutional government slipped off Bush's smug face to expose the brutal GOP fascist beast beneath, the Boston Globe unmasks the real Fred Thompson.
Thompson made his bones working as a lawyer for Tennessee Republican Howard Baker during the impeachment hearing for the only American president held in as much disdain as the currently unimpeached one. But, now it turns out that Thompson was a spy, or a secret mole, for the Nixon criminal clique in the White House.
Underhanded deceptions? Two-timing? Serving more than one master? No wonder the current GOP views Thompson as some great Presidential hope.

Thompson has more bones in his closet than the Crypt Keeper. Giuliani was one of New York's most divisive mayors and isn't all that competent. He could actually be worse than Bush even with some of his liberal record. Romney is trying to reinvent himself like the average person can't recall 5 years ago. And McCain is just McCain. The ONLY way the Democrats can lose in 2008 is if they run Hillary. There is a large percentage of the voting block that will just not vote for her under ANY circumstances far various reasons. She can give birth to Jesus on live TV and still wouldn't be able to climb above 45% nationally. If he Democrats lose in 2008, then the third party we've all been dreaming about will come in the form of the Democratic party literally splitting in two: Democrats and Progressives.

Actually, Thompson's time on the campaign finance investigation is really worth looking into. From what I understand, Thompson was actually considering a run around the time he looked into the Chinese-Buddhist temple fund raising scandal. Congressional investigations are considered a good way to raise your profile. But, from what I understand, Trent Lott stuck him on this investigation to screw him or something. In any case, Thompson badly mishandled the investigation angering rank and file republicans who were out for blood. He demonstrated complete ineptitude and political naivety. After the investigation, Thompson's name was mentioned as a presidential candidate again. The point being this guy had the ability to run a big, high profile investigation into Clinton to play to the republican base. Thompson's no Dan Burton, but he completely screwed up. So the press reports that Thompson isn't very impressive aren't a big surprise to me. I suspect when he screws up it will be impressive. I can't remember all the details off hand but I believe that the mistake thompson made was sending out subpoenas to a lot of major democratic and republican contributors who then refused to come to testify. Naturally neither party wanted contributors to be forced to testify and it didn't go much beyond that. I think.
Sounds like a War Zone outside right now.

Yea, Fred Thompson stands about as much chance of winning the White House as my grandmother...and she's been dead for 10 years.
I'd guess the story about Thompson came out and the Repubs knew they couldn't take Tennessee from Gore, so they had to go after Gore (via his son). Simple Rovian logic. Disgusting, but logical.

On the local news here in New York tonight the lead stories were about (strong leader) George Bush advocating staying the course in Iraq, followed by Republicans McCain and and Lindsey Graham honoring the soldiers, followed by Al Gore's son arrested for pot possession.
The corporate media aren't even subtle about there right wing bias anymore...and this wasn't on FOX either, it was NBC.

I seem to recall Nixon referring to (Republican) Howard Baker as a "simpering asshole." So, let me get this straight: Fred Thompson was sycophant for the psychopath, who's job it was to secretly SPY on the simpering asshole? I think if he was trying to keep that a secret, it's probably more out of embarrassment than anything else. It's not the kind of thing I would want to have on my CV, would you? If anything, I think I'd want to PUFF my dirty politics CV by 'Liddying it up.' I'd probably say something like "I was sent to terminate Baker with extreme prejudice, but the poisonous adder that I was supposed to sneak into his briefcase accidentally bit ME instead, and I had to have to poison sucked out by my sexy secret accomplice, former CIA hit woman Faun Hall."

I have always hated this guy... something about his hillbilly accent... Gore has a similar accent, but Gore comes off as reasonably sincere... not this jerk.

Fred Thompson, actor, major Washington lobbyist and captive of the interests he serves. There is nothing fresh and new about him. He staged his campaign with the pickup truck. Now money is flowing into his coffers like water. He is just another tool.

Is Fred Thompson the best that the Republicans can do as a presidential candidate? This shows that the Republican party has nothing left.
I found a group in Iowa called "Republicans for Bill Richardson". The profile indicates that this group was formed by Republicans who are very unhappy with their party. Republicans publicly supporting a Democrat is almost unheard of. That says a lot about the status of the GOP.

Thompson has always (in his political persona) struck me as the kind of skunk who walks around with his finger in the wind, looking to change to the winning side at the most opportune moment.
