Sunday Talking Head Thread
(Chocolati mocha photo via ChrisB in SEA.)
The Sunday Talking Head line-up is ready for perusal.
Wonder if there will be any questions about President Bush's obstruction of justice maneuver with the Libby commutation? If nothing else, I am looking forward to the Sen. Pat Leahy interview. Bob Geiger has some great weekend cartoons for everyone -- do not miss the Handelsman animation.
What is catching your eye on the blogs or in the news this morning?

Wonder if anyone will start asking people about this:
Wonder what ol' Fred will say.
I'm looking for stuff about Live Earth. So far all I've found is an article on Fox Noise labeling it "Junk Science"
They're still beating the "green bad for economy" drum without considering all the angles. They even go so far as to insinuate that the Europeans are only going green because it benefits them and hurts the US.
I'm sure relieved that the Live Earth concerts solved the Global Warming problem.
WOW that was a close one.
Live(?) Earth
jk @ 3:
It's did more to solve the problem of Global Warming than invading Iraq did to stop Muslim extremism...
FYI, there's a typo in the link to FDL (hhttp).
Nice one, swashbuckler!
Sadly, it's also done more for the environment than Bush has EVER done.
Oooh, the Cheney-as-Octopus image is a keeper. Let's make sure lots of people see that one.

U.S. Aborted Raid on Qaeda Chiefs in Pakistan in ’05
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/08/washington/08intel.html?_r=1&hp&oref=s...
WASHINGTON, July 7 — A secret military operation in early 2005 to capture senior members of Al Qaeda in Pakistan’s tribal areas was aborted at the last minute after top Bush administration officials decided it was too risky and could jeopardize relations with Pakistan, according to intelligence and military officials.
The target was a meeting of Qaeda leaders that intelligence officials thought included Ayman al-Zawahri, Osama bin Laden’s top deputy and the man believed to run the terrorist group’s operations.
But the mission was called off after Donald H. Rumsfeld, then the defense secretary, rejected an 11th-hour appeal by Porter J. Goss, then the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, officials said. Members of a Navy Seals unit in parachute gear had already boarded C-130 cargo planes in Afghanistan when the mission was canceled, said a former senior intelligence official involved in the planning.

Gee.....I wonder what rock these scum slithered out from under? Could they be part of George W. Bush's vaunted 'base'? Seems possible to me.
On a more cultural note check out this old video of one of the forgotten bands of the 60s.
And then let's get back to the 'Final Conflict' between good and evil. No guesses as to who is and who supports the wave of evil our nation finds itself struggling with.
Will they ask Fred Thompson if it's true he keeps his trophy child bride happy with a penile implant pumped up with his rubber nose?
THE CANCER REMAINS
Over 30 years ago John Dean told Richard Nixon there was a cancer on the presidency. He was right and he was wrong. Nixon was the cancer, but it was in the body of America.
The small tumor was removed, but the cancer was not destroyed. When Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon, he allowed the cancer to survive. He said that we needed to forget the cancer in order to heal the nation. You don't cure cancer by forgetting it. So the cancer cells were allowed to remain in the body and to matasticize. The cancer is back in the executive branch, but now it has invaded the legislative branch and the judicial branch.
The cancer is killing America, and if America is to be saved, then the cancer must be destroyed.
It must be cut out of the body through impeachment, it must be irradiated through prosecution and it must be eradicated from the body through the chemotherapy of justice.
It will not be easy or fast but it is imperative if America is to be saved.
And then just like cancer survivors, there needs to be regular checkups to make sure the cancer never returns again.
Impeachment must start now and followed through completely to the end.
Meet the Press was on an hour earlier here than usual. Timmuh wasn't there so David took his place. Basically I would call it a wasted hour. Hagel said pretty much what he always says. One thing of note, he did not agree Libby should have gotten his get out of jail card. Then the round table of mostly people who seemed to enjoy hearing their own voices.
Good morning everyone.
ps, 5th commenter, you nailed it :)
I seriously hope that no one actually takes Chuck Hagel to be a "Independent" candidate. He was on Meet The Press this morning and he's trying to get a ton of traction as a "alternative" candidate. But he votes 95% of the time with Bush. If it wasn't for the Iraq War, he would probably be around 97 or 98%. I was one of the people who initially rooted for Hagel, but that fact alone has made me do an about-face.
So PLEASE do not fall for the Bloomberg-Hagel ticket.
The Opus cartoon in today's paper is a keeper. It involves Fred Thompson and it's great.
With an approval rating at 26% the Worst President Ever will likely leave office behind only Nixon as Most Unpopular Ever.
There's little chance he'll turn those numbers around in his last year and a half because clearing brush is not an important skill for a US president. But that's all he's got.
I wish he would clear himself and cheney right out of the white house. Then he could clear all the brush he wanted to for the rest of his life or until we obtain the warrant.
This is the 40th Anniversary of the Summer of Love.
But any flower child of the 1960's can tell you, "Everything Changed After That"
Two excellent editorials in NYT this AM. The first calls for the US to get out of Iraq -- see link via Huffington Post. It is well done. Oh well, here is the link:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/08/opinion/08sun1.html?n=Top%2fOpinion%2f...
The 2nd good piece is by their "Public Editor", Clark Hoyt. It takes the NYT to task for following the Bush Administration's line that we are fighting Al Quada in Iraq. Hoyt says that there are many groups we are fighting, and that Al Quada in Iraq is not under the control of Bin Laden. He says the NYT has misled its readers by not digging into this, and by quoting unnamed officials, which is a way of spreading the Administration's party line.
Overall, this is an excellent editorial, and long overdue. The two pieces together maybe actually signal that the press is going to start thinking for itself, and questioning administration points rigorously. Let's hope
Here is the link to Clark Hoyt's piece, which is not behind the subscriber wall:

Here is some text from page 1 of the piece, & it's well worth reading the whole thing:

AS domestic support for the war in Iraq continues to melt away, President Bush and the United States military in Baghdad are increasingly pointing to a single villain on the battlefield: Al Qaeda.
Chuck Kennedy/McClatchy-Tribune
Clark Hoyt
Bush mentioned the terrorist group 27 times in a recent speech on Iraq at the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. In West Virginia on the Fourth of July, he declared, “We must defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq.” The Associated Press reported last month that although some 30 groups have claimed credit for attacks on United States and Iraqi government targets, press releases from the American military focus overwhelmingly on Al Qaeda.
Why Bush and the military are emphasizing Al Qaeda to the virtual exclusion of other sources of violence in Iraq is an important story. So is the question of how well their version of events squares with the facts of a murky and rapidly changing situation on the ground.
But these are stories you haven’t been reading in The Times in recent weeks as the newspaper has slipped into a routine of quoting the president and the military uncritically about Al Qaeda’s role in Iraq — and sometimes citing the group itself without attribution.
And in using the language of the administration, the newspaper has also failed at times to distinguish between Al Qaeda, the group that attacked the United States on Sept. 11, and Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, an Iraqi group that didn’t even exist until after the American invasion.
There is plenty of evidence that Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia is but one of the challenges facing the United States military and that overemphasizing it distorts the true picture of what is happening there. While a president running out of time and policy options may want to talk about a single enemy that Americans hate and fear in the hope of uniting the country behind him, journalists have the obligation to ask tough questions about the accuracy of his statements.
Middle East experts with whom I talked in recent days said that the heavy focus on Al Qaeda obscures a much more complicated situation on the ground — and perhaps a much more dangerous one around the world.
“Nobody knows how many different Islamist extremist groups make up the insurgency” in Iraq, said Anthony H. Cordesman of the bipartisan Center for Strategic and International Studies. “Even when you talk about Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia, the idea of somehow it is the center of the insurgency is almost absurd.”

Live Earth has it's fifteen minutes.
That must be record.
Slector tried to force Senator Lehy into saying he would agree to have Rove go in front of a closed door meeting with no Sworn testimony or transcript onn CNN with Wolf Blitzer. Spector said it would be between a "few" senators and if Lehy didn't accept this offer from the President that things would drag on in the courts for years and Gonzales would be left in place with no hopes of getting him out of his job. I hope Lehy sticks to his guns and does not fall for this latest tactic from Bush/Cheney and the Republicans. The Republicans know they are in big trouble. They are running for cover right now. Now is the time for the Democrats to give them the one two punch that knocks them down. Please Democrats do not fall for their baloney. Do the right thing, by accepting nothing less han sworn testimony from Rove/Meirs. If they do not comply, then let it go to the courts.
So Texas has become a breeding ground for home-grown Christofascist terrorists who try to bomb CHURCHES? Thank God for the rains that caused these boys to get stuck in the mud while running from that "fleet-footed deacon."
Mr. Bush's plan to fight 'em over yonder so they don't come over here seems to be stuck in the mud as well.
Sany @ 23:
Both Leahy and Spector said it might be a good idea to call Patrick Fitzgerald to testify on the Libby Communtation.
What caught my eye this morning was a guy standing outside the Fox studio window flipping them off as they sat at the "news" desk. It was hillarious!
You can find the event at the 2:44 minute mark into the video at
