Larry Flynt is the essence of what America and freedom is about.
Think of freedom as a big fenced in pasteur. Even though we can go to all parts of the pasteur, people want everyone huddled up in the center of the field. What good does it do to have the freedoms we have if we never exercise them? Flynt stands right up against the fence and waves his arms over the side. Some people just can't stand it though. I applaude him for it.
I also use my fenced pasteur analogy to prove that conservatives want things to change and liberals want things to stay the same. Right now, we're all hanging out on the west side of the pasteur, but we can go anywhere. Conservatives actually want to make the fence smaller, to keep us huddled where we are. Liberals want to keep the fence the same and allow people to just use what rights they already have. Liberals want to keep your opportunities the same. Conservatives want to keep your decisions the same, by changing your opportunities. I dunno. It makes sense in my weird head. =)

The bleeding heart liberal in me kind of feels sorry for him. His campaign spent bizarre amounts of money and now they are all but broke. They spent money and his polls just kept falling.
From what I can gather, the guy arrested in Fla for offering bj's was part of McCain's Florida campaign. I would suggest they keep sharp objects away from McCain and keep an eye on him. No matter what, the guy has to be taking a hell of a mental hit right now.

The impeachment was never about rationality or proportion in the first place. The extremists that were then on the ascent in the GOP were trying to bootstrap something minor into a national crisis, in which everyone was forced to take sides. You were either FOR morality or you were AGAINST it.
Then once the impeachment effort was launched, it was a passion play full of exaggerations, high emotions, ringing rhetoric, stirring rhetoric and stark moral choices. It was also completely bogus -- at least for the politicians -- and it masked a partisan shadow agenda to destroy Clinton and bury the Democratic party. Which largely succeeded.
And ever since, we have kept living the impeachment over and over and over again, year after year. Like we did in the run-up to the Iraq war.

Livingston resigned immediately. Barr remained in the House until '03, but lost a ton of stature within the GOP. Barr's a Libertarian now.

Using Flynt go after someone who is having sex seems on the face, implausable and ultimately, ineffective given his past and current treatment of women. Isn't the point of magazine for people to have more sex? I concede all first ammendment arguments for his right to publish anything he desires. I was having a mediocre Friday until I read this. Few things in the world I like more than watching high-and-mighty assholes get exposed for being the same nasty, pervy, horny people the rest of us are.
If the Republicans (ok, the politicians, to be fair) would just come out and admit that they're a bunch of underage-page-boinking, drunk driving, skirt-chasing, profit-driven, immoral criminals, I wouldn't like them any more than I do today - but I've give them props for honesty.
Was there ever a time when we could truly look up to Congress and the President? I draw a broad line of demarcation between those things I call morality and ethics. My definitions of both will explain that line and the meaning behind it. While they are not the dictionary definitions, they work well for me.
Morality is what someone does to ensure that his ticket into heaven will be valid when it is called for. This makes morality a selfish act in that it’s only basis of concern is “ME!” and “my eternal soul.” It is best typified by that trite statement that was popular in the sixties when I was in High School; “I don’t smoke and I don’t chew and I don’t watch girls do the hoochie coo.”
Ethics is what one does out of respect and concern for the other humans (and yes other life forms) that inhabit this planet. It is the basis behind that rule that has been cited by all religions in history and consequently ignored by most of them – to wit – what Christianity calls the golden rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” When it comes to choosing between morality and ethics, I will choose ethics any day!
Larry Flynt is not a moral man by this definition, but if you understand my definitions, that is meaningless. Larry Flynt is one of the most ethical men I know of. Yes, he did start out selfishly, trying to earn a living by providing a product that had a demand while it was frowned upon. However, when making that living ran into attempts to curtail it by blue-nosed moralists, Larry Flynt was able to rise to the occasion and do more for the first Amendment than any other man of the twentieth century, and perhaps even the history of that Amendment.
Keep in mind that pornography was once a respected and highly valued art form. As such, it was carved into stone and used to decorate public buildings. Yes, even children were allowed to see it. And we are not talking about the soft pornography of Playboy and other gentlemen’s magazines. We are talking about what we call hard core pornography, where the act of penetration was depicted up close and personal or “in your face.” That penetration was not limited to vaginal penetration. It included oral penetration and anal penetration – and yes, even the penetration of men’s anal orifices.
My only problem with Larry Flynt is this. I have never been enticed by sex as a spectator sport. When you put the male genitals in there, you get in the way of what I really want to see, that beautiful open flower of the female in its full glory. However, I recognize that I am the exception and not the norm, and will not condemn those who do enjoy sex as a spectator sport.
Today, we accept Larry Flynt’s self description as a smut peddler and a bottom-feeder. That is because we are still influenced by the mind set of the Victorian age in which we tried to deny the existence of sex and sexuality. Tomorrow we will discard those terms and list Larry Flynt with other heroes of humanity such as Nathan Hale, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi.
