I agree with your statement. However, that is only part of what is happening in Iraq from what I gather. First off, the Kurdish PKK has been mixing it up lately with the Iranians and Turks in northern Iraq. Just the other day Iran shelled Kurdish positions in Iraq and Turkey has made some small cross border operations into Iraq along with their shelling.
Then, the Kurds are also mixing it up in and around Kirkuk against the Shia, Sunni and in some cases the Turkmen. Add in, that you also have outside assistance from Saudi Arabia, Iran and no telling who else. Those nations are supporting their breathern. Its almost as if you have a civil/sectarian war to in the south of Iraq, a move for independence/autonomy in the north, and other nations using those religious/ethnic divides to their own advantage. Meanwhile, the U.S. and its "coalition of the willing" is trying to hold all of this together with an Iraqi Government which can not do anything outside of the green zone effectively. Add to all of this, "Al Qaeda" who is expoliting every opportunity to further these various conflicts.

For most of us "no" civil war means ZERO casualties. Not "some" casualities below some undefined threshold of Kristol's choosing. Redefining the language is the same as lying. It's all in the INTENT. People who lie should not be given a microphone with which to broadcast.

This guy is at least as delusional as his puppetmasters !! it is actually quite scary ... I won't even commment on his assertions about Iraq and how Ulysses Grant is supposedly reincarnated into General Petraeus because frankly it is nothing but ridiculous but I do have a small comment on the "foreign policy" side of this piece.
Talk about cherry-picking facts !!! ... Kristol conveniently ignores than most public opinions worldwide, including in countries that used to be staunch allies of the US (and by the way including in Japan which he cites as an exemple of success of Dubya's policies) are disgusted with or even scared by this US administration.
And that include all european countries (with the possible exception of Poland but only because they are a nation of christian fundamentalists), including the UK : over 80% of polled people in the UK, GHermany, France, Italy, Spain ...etc... see this US administration as the greatest danger upon world peace. And don't get us European started on climate chage and the Kyoto protocol !
To read Kristol say that getting rather "friendly" new governements in France and Germany is a sign of succes for Bush is also priceless... It is a good measure of the extravagant level of ethno-centrism displayed by those neocons (by the way, "con" in French can loosely translate into ass hole or bastards ... so neo-con would be the new brand of them !) and somebody ought to tell him that people certainly did not vote for Sarkozy with US politics in mind. If anything, Sarkozy's supposed cozyness with Bush has been one of his only real liability in an otherwise very clever campaign (I did not vote for the guy though, but not because of this alleged connection ... even though he took real pain later on to distance himself from his photo op with Shrub).
Glad to hear that most americans are smarter than their government thinks. We think your president is either crazy, not the sharpest tool in the shed or just plain evil along with all his side kicks. I can't listen to Fox anymore it gives me a sick feeling, and I feel sorry for those that believe the lies and wonder how it's possible that these people are allowed to tell such lies and misinformation to the public. A very good point, my friend! Few can abide a foreign army on their homeland. Would Americans tolerate this? Hardly. We would unite to throw-off the invader, then go back to our internal strife.
