harry_reid_job1.jpg It looks like Harry Reid heard our call....

Republicans are being obstructionists and it's about time Harry is doing his job. Good for him...

Bob Geiger has the details:

In making this move (based on my understanding of Senate rules), Reid is invoking the provisions of Rule 22 (Precedence of Motions) of the Standing Rules of the Senate, which provides, at the Majority Leader's discretion, up to 30 hours of debate if a filibuster is initiated -- as the Republicans will most certainly do, knowing that Reed-Levin may very well have the 51 votes needed for passage.

Bush:

"No time to focus on impeachment: We have important legislation to pass ...[uh] filibuster ... [uh] veto....[uh]...issue a signing statement to ignore [uh]. . . not enforce... [uh] retaliate against the US Atty's if they attempt to enforce . . .[uh] to secretly make rules to bypass the courts and violate anyway and not get caught ... [uh] to create another excuse to suppress, destroy evidence and issue commutations...[uh] to find another excuse to invoke executive priviledge to hide evidence of our illegal activity . .. [uh] to find a new excuse to create false evidence and retlate against the public for calling us on our non-sense illegal activity. . . ."

Every minute the GOP Senators filibuster, is one more minute the GOP is showing they are not serious about passing legislation, but distracting attention from the needed impeachment: President would be denied a pardon regardless the Senate vote.

Just think how stupid Stevens gets after no sleep. Oh this is going to be good.lol

I hope c-span keeps their camera on the entire time. Remember tomorrow to stock up on pop corn and the adult beverage of your choice. Might want to grab a cat nap tomorrow so you can stay awake to see some of this.

Finally, some fight back. It's a good beginning. The country's attitude is behind Harry so all he has to do is force the bastards to stand up and let the public know who they are.

If we're lucky, Stevens will have a melt down.

Some of them know they have to walk a thin line between what their voters want and what the head of their party wants. I bet the decider guy is pissing and moaning about this too.

Has anyone heard if bush will take the month of August off? I know it's for sure that the Iraqi govt. will.

Hey, let's not forget that the Republican Congress couldn't even be bothered to hold session more than two days a week. Imagine staying up for 30 hours?

I'm sure all the Republicanites will get the vapors, and accuse Democrats of "symbolic acts" rather than "doing the people's business" (you know, like interfering in the Terry Schiavo matter?).

The fellow that C&L and other Democrats put down, Democratic presidential candidate Mike Gravel, came forth with just such a tactic over a month ago and he has been pushing hard to bring it to the attention of anyone who will listen.

Looks as if someone may have finally listened to him.

Someone educate me....IF/when the filibuster by Repigs is kicked off, "must" the
speaker(s) stick to the topic of the legislation before them, or can they do as
Senator Warner just did(on CSPAN-3) talk about anything and everthing NOT
related/pertaining/or connected to the Bill being filibustered???? If that is the
case, then I can guarantee you that 30 hours of "nothing" will accomplish nothing.

Anon's picture

Maybe some GOP counsel will whine that the Senators need a break. "Hay, it's not fair . . .they're really tired. . . and these cots in the cloak room are so hard to sleep on ... [wah, wah]"

How's that GOP whining, going counselor?

Steven Jong's picture

So what happens after 30 hours? Does the measure automatically come up for a vote? Or does the cloture motion come back onto the table?

Reid's plan just might work to and the timing couldn't be more right especially if what Sen. Voinovich is true. Who knows, we might just see "some fur fly" as Sen. Voinovich said:

GOP senator to Rove: Bush legacy on the line in Iraq

"Voinovich added that other Republicans are close to speaking out against the President’s current strategy.

“I won’t mention anyone’s name. But I have every reason to believe that the fur is going to start to fly, perhaps sooner than what they may have wanted.”

In private, Voinovich is more blunt, using a profanity to describe the White House’s handling of Iraq by charging the administration “f—ed up” the war."

crazy train's picture

A giant leap forward! Hold the crooks accountable!! Reid nailed it with this.....

“Blocking an up or down vote on Levin-Reed shows that Republicans are more interested in protecting the President than protecting our troops,” Reid said. “This week, we will make Republicans answer for their refusal to allow an up-or-down vote on the most important issue facing our country today. If Republicans insist on blocking a change of course in Iraq, Democrats will keep them in session to explain their obstruction.”

This argues because the GOP will likely (illegally) ignore Congress on limiting funding, nothing can be done. No, that's called evidence.

Not impressed with this "oh, nothing can be done"-attitude. Let the GOP defy the law: It's the basis to prosecute them. Remember Iran-Contra. Reagan was worried about impeachment.

Get ready to gather evidence of GOP defying Congress, and using money in violation of the law. Contractors who support illegal warfare, and defy Congress can be prosecuted.

Civilians can be prosecuted for defying Congress on this change in funding. President cannot reprogram funds from other departments to ignore Congress. Send in the auditors to follow-up on what Congress decides. Watch the funds getting moved inside the OSD accounts: Watch the low funds execution rates below OSD goals; also the management reserve levels in the 3020 procurement funding.

Further, if almost 1/2 of the 30 hours would NOT anyway have been spent by the U.S. Senate in session doing the people's business, what was really gained other than requiring some of the Repig Senators to rotate into the Well of the Senate Chambers talking(filibustering) about absolutely nothing.

Show Me You Care

I know the title sounds corny. I wanted it to speak to what has been lacking from Senate leader Harry Reid. This man was "playing middle of the road" politics with one of the most contemptuous issues facing America today. This occupation of Iraq should be ended, and any action by our senate less then that is not supportive to our troops.

I am a committed Democrat. Yet, Reid tried my commitment with his failure to stand strong for the withdrawal of our troops. I, in turn, spent many comments promoting unity after the Republicans tried to take advantage of disappointed Democrats who also had a problem with Reid's actions. I recall reading many suspect right-wing comments, on leftest sites, telling would be supporters they had spineless leaders who could not deliver on promises. Even now, those comments exist as they try to make the claims the Democrats have not delivered the presidency, impeachment, or stopped the war in the 7 months they were in majority standing in both Houses.

I have not changed my standings on my Party, and this move to symbolize what we stand for by preparing to work 24 hours has made me understand why I chose Democrats over Republicans. The problems the Democrats have taken on were 12-5 years in construction. I cannot forget it will take a few years to undo what the Republicans have build. It is all about the process our Party seems to be in, and when that process is change, I am okay with their efforts.

Doggiebobo: "I guess my follow-up question is…”Great TV for who”??"

Well, there's TiVo. I'm sure there will be plenty of YouTubers recording the whole thing overnight and scouring it carefully the next day for real howlers. As somebody said elsewhere, the filibuster was devised when politicians were used to standing up and talking for hours, making it up brilliantly as they went along. Nowadays, you get to be a senator by fundraising, making deals with corporate biggies, holding meetings, making a few TV commercials, and doing so-called campaign stops where you just shake hands, kiss babies, and regurgitate the stump speech you've done 100 times before. What they call "debates" are just interleaved press conferences. Making these guys get up on their feet and try to be coherent at 4 am is bound to produce some goodies.

Also, it's going to be less than great for the press corps that's going to have to stay up and watch whether they want to or not. Keep this up long enough and they're going to like the R's less and less. That would be nice.

Other than that, you have no one to blame but yourselves. Also, I have news for you folks. Bush is ‘The Leaker’.

In the Name of Brutus

Dames and Gents,

In times unprecedented and tinged with despair, it is appropriate to reflect on the founding of our great nation. It was not with George Washington, but with Brutus, and not the one who killed Caeser. There was another who rebelled against the tyrant monarchy of Rome, The Tarquins. He wrote the Roman Constitution that would stand for 500 years. His sons sided with the monarchy. The monarchy lost. So to punish his sons and found a perfect union, he immolated his own sons.
Machiavelli speaks fluently and voluminoulsy and voiciferously on this subject, in ‘The Discourses’, and yet is proved wrong on several counts by the miracle of America. He says that a nation founded in servitude, as America was a colony, will never win its freedom. He also says that a nation founded on fertile soil that is easily defended, will in time loose all of its freedoms because it will become, eventually, inevitably, sloth and sated, and will forget to protect them.
As regards 'The DC Madam', I am personally involved. You can view my involvement at http://www.maytheygetwhattheydeserve.com/KAT.html
Sometimes a mouse will lead you to a kat, and a kat can lead you to a rat and a rat, ironically, can lead you to the truth. And the truth, as they say, and as it is written, will set you free.
May all those who sincerely and patiently wait for freedom be free and may all those who desire to steal those freedoms find instead the dire consequences that accompany contempt for a great man like Brutus.

As regards Machiavelli,
