The Colbert Report Is Back...Too!
By Logan Murphy Monday Jul 16, 2007 2:35pm
After a two week break, Stephen Colbert is back as well. He interviews Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) who is a supporter of the occupation of Iraq and advocates keeping our troops there, but redeploying them to the borders and other areas outside Baghdad to fight Al Qaeda. Senator Nelson skillfully uses GOP talking points, including the opinion that Congress should wait till September to hear what General Petraeus has to say about the surge. Stephen has a bit of fun with him, have at it in the comments...

So glad these guys are back and what a bad week to be on break too.
Bring it boys!
http://dirtycoast.com
Time to run a real dem against Nelson in the primary.
I'm mad at Nelson for voting to restore Cheney's office funding besides the september cultism
bring 'em home
http://youtube.com/watch?v=tMACzBomDK4
I nominate Stephen Colbert to play Superman in the next movie.
Brendon Routh looks like Johnny Storm, a real flamer.
"Thank You for supporting our President." Quite possibly the most damaging words a Democratic Senator could possibly hear right now.... go get 'em, Stephen!
I totally heart Stephen!
I totally don't trust Nelson!
U.S. Veterans Affairs Secretary James Nicholson is stepping down. What a waste he has been. He was another Brownie.
I wish MSM talking heads would have more "heads-up" interviews in the style of Colbert & Stewart.
I watch some of the sunday shows and it appears to me that they don't know the issues completely. They have a cursory understanding of them, and that's why they do their round-table panel discussions.
I get the impression that Colbert does/has done his homework, and is keenly aware of where and when to strike. He does it well.
we'll have measurable progress in Sectvember -- this time for sure!
Gotta "transition the mission" what a mouthpiece GW must be proud~!
" He interviews Senator Ben Nelson (D-NE) ...."
"Senator Nelson skillfully uses GOP talking points"
HAHAHAHA. So anything that isn't as far-left and out of the mainstream is "GOP talking points."
That ruined my hour last night.
Fucking tool
:(
Could Senator Nelson possible be any duller. How the hell did he get elected. He is the graveyard for charisma. What is that thing on his head and most of his forehead. Is he trying to pass that off as his hair. It looks like cartoon hair.
...
Ian - Patriot @ 12:
This is funny? More proof that Republicans have no sense of humor.
let's see how smart you are Senator? You ever gonna show up on Colbert again?
Ian - Patriot @ 12:
No. GOP talking points are just that. All of your attempts to belie that fact aren't going over here, traitor.
Ian - Patriot @ 12:
No, using GOP talking points = USING GOP TALKING POINTS. People are not always what they label themselves to be. This is the essence of what we call White Collar crimes, or High Crimes in some cases.
Ian - Patriot @ 12:
Riiiight, way to polarize it there, GOP talkin' point or far left. So the 28%ers are the political center?
I see Ian, Traitor has many like-minded fans here.
Ian - Patriot @ 12:
In case you hadn't noticed, your glass is currently only about 1/4 full. But I wouldn't drink it...
seamus @ 14:
Nelson, apparently, had a better toupee than his opponent. That is the secret to his success.
Ian is a CRASHER.
In plain sight.
ian-patriot: there's one way to find out if you truly are a patriot. if you're not willing to go to iraq and die for your country, then you're not a patriot. if you are willing to go and die, then you're a fucking idiot.
Colbert's usual quicksilver wit was lost on Ben Nelson. (nice ties, however)
redcat @ 24:
I disagree, redcat. You don't need to put patriot to the test. Plainly, he's a f-ing idiot.
redcat @ 24:
The sad truth is that no one who is dieing in Iraq is dieing for their country.
“Lets pull them back to the borders…”
Yea, OUR borders.
Makes me sad to have called myself a nebraskan at one time.
H'yeah y'all. You're actually fulfilling the CRASHER'S purpose. Ignore.
Wow. Ian makes a comment at 12 and gets 7 responses (so far). I'm with crazy on this one. Isn't his the kind of comment to just ignore?
Er. 10 comments now.
Bob Roberts @ 31:
Did you count yours?
Bob Roberts @ 32:
Both of them?
Ian Patriot, you're delusional. "out of the mainstream" would be YOU...part of the 20% that support le Moron Stupide.
miss kitty@33,34, Sure you could count his if you're not discerning between pointing out an activity and participating in it.
well if you want to parse it the other way...
isnt this the ass that ok'd Cheney's funding?
if so why not call him out
I'm beginning to think there is an emotional need for CRASHERS, since most seem to protect that. Very interesting.
[OK Everyone. Back on topic please-Sitemonitor]
[Deleted. Off topic-Sitemonitor]
Not a problem, sitemonitor.
i don't understand this "pulling them back to the borders line". Which borders? If they pull back to the Saudi/Iraq border than they are in the middle of the Sunni stronghold. If they go to the Iran/Iraq border than they are simply provoking Iran while possibly infuriating the Shiites. So I guess when they say "pull back to the border" they are talking about going to Kuwait. Okay. But why would we have anymore success against Al-Qaeda (aka the Sunnis) in Kuwait than we are having in Baghdad?
Really this "pull back to the border" crap is about offering a false choice to the voters. You can't pull back to the borders. You can only leave or stay. Sen. Nelson and many, many Dems in Congress are simply full of it. The "borders" aren't surrounded by force fields. They can still kill troops at the borders. And when we go into Iraq to "strike at Al-Qaeda" they can kill us when we come in there to. "Pull back to the borders" simply means less prolong the war for 2 to 3 more years because we can't admit defeat.
Me@38, Ben Nelson has clearly become a repug mole, and can only wonder who the others are. Anyone?
Andy K @ 19:
BINGO!
Too much talk about the Iraq war pullout and the Washington filibuster? No problem, release the “Al Qaeda’s Gonna Strike Any day Now” report! BOOOOO!

And you no what… it will work. Stupid stupid people.
What a stupid, clueless, idiotic, empty-headed, shit for brains, fuckwad of a stenographer for the White House. This lick-spittle shithead calls himself a Democrat?!? He is giving verbatim GOPer talking points. Fuck him. I'll support any grass roots attempt to put this cretin in a shitty hairpiece on the streets.
Hey Ben Nelson: eat shit and die.
ahhhhh give Ian - Traitor a break, he's probably just being an ignorant stupid troll for money.
And you know what… it will work. Stupid stupid Gort.
This is what passes for a Democratic senator from my state. If a "real" Dem is in the primary, he will be swamped, but IF one would be fortunate enough to be nominated (and at that point, we will be iceskating on the River Styx), Nebraskans would choose one of their fundamentalist rightwingers to go to D.C.
Moderate Dems have a shot, especially as the war goes badly, and the criminal obstruction continues, but a progressive from this state-don't hold your breath.
Love his hair!! Wonder if the Wal-Marts in Nebraska have it on the shelf, or if it has to be special ordered.
What a putz! He has memorized the cheney administration's talking points very well - for one with the IQ of a moron.
I lived in Omaha when Nelson ran against Hagel for the senate (Hagel won; Nelson ran again when Kerrey stepped down and won his seat). He was so bad I had to leave the ballot blank. He made Hagel look good. If you've ever lived in Nebraska you know how he won - I've never met so many lobotomized, robatic citizens.
What a stupid, clueless, idiotic, empty-headed, shit for brains, fuckwad of a stenographer for the White House. This lick-spittle shithead calls himself a Democrat?!? He is giving verbatim GOPer talking points. Fuck him. I’ll support any grass roots attempt to put this cretin in a shitty hairpiece on the streets.
Hey Ben Nelson: eat shit and die.
Darn it! Well, since you said what I was gonna say, I'll just add a note of gratitude to Senator Nelson. I never imagined myself being smarter than a Senator, but now I see that there may be many middle schoolers who could outwit him! Well done Senator, you have improved the self-esteem of many!
Emerald is correct unfortunately... I wish that the progressive voice was more powerful, but its easier to get a moderate dem to vote for sensible policies than a wingnut fundie (e.g. ian patriot). Pragmatism is painful, but we must face the reality of the situation as we build the strenght of our grassroots progressive movement. Hopefully the pendulum (sp?) will swing far enough that it will allow us to purge the DINO's from the party (e.g. DLC folks like Hillary!). Until then, we'll have to outsmart them with savy compromises....
Andy K @ 22:
Mother to god, our tax dollars paid for that rug...
dave @ 54:
He probably itemized it under "office redecorating."
Nelson has the charisma of a narcoleptic undertaker.
Did anybody ever tell this guy that it doesn't look like "hair" but more like he has a dead animal on his head.
I hope a real Democratic populist runs against him and kicks his DINO ass!!!
Is Ben Nelson really Joe Lieberman in makeup and a wig?
(Personal Note; Write letter to democratic party informing them there will be no contributions from me until i can be assured the party will not support Ben Lieberman "oops" Nelson.
“Thank You for supporting our President.”
LOL! Well played Mr. Stephen T. Colbert D.F.A. Watching him dissect his guests reminds me of an old episode of Star Trek, where mega brained "Q" outsmarts the stupid humans.
Ok so I'm a geek, sue me.
The Democrats have no power in congress except hold the speaker of the house, which aren't towing the line for the people that voted for a change. The republican are refusing to let any bill pass under the so-called democratic party control of the house.
If our majority have no power and only have Democrats in sheep clothings, then why not strip them of the democrat label? Send another message to the people that they need to elect real Democrats, if they want changes.
Simple question: Did Nelson sound like a Democrat to you?
To me, he sounded exactly like a Republican.
AndyZ @ 3:
Is Nelson up for re-election in 2008? We need an Iraqi vet to run as a Democrat against Nelson.
I have seen a worse rug than Ben Nelson's in Northern Ontario. He also had politics right of Attila the Hun. Is there something with wingnuts and hair pieces?
Bull @ 57:
Sigh. Nelson is what passes for a liberal in Nebraska. A liberal Democrat cannot win. A centrist Democrat cannot win. You get a choice - Nelson or a conservative Republican. Nelson does vote with his party from time to time. That's better than the Republican would do.
Rather than complain that some Democrats from conservative states represent the views of their conservative constituencies, why not be glad that the Democrats actually do represent what their constituents want, instead of marching in lock step with party leadership?
Thank god for our two party system! Just think of how bad things would be if the government was run by one party! Nobody would ever be able to challenge the president!
As a Nebraska resident, let me offer some insight into the state's political climate.
Most Nebraskans think Ben Nelson is a flaming, left-wing liberal. Take a look at the other suspects in the Nebraska Congressional delegation and you'll see what I mean. There are several explanations for this, starting with the fact that most people bright enough to get through college immediately flee the state. This leaves the maroons to elect the next crop of politicos who then pass more business-friendly legislation that makes decent careers impossible, starting the next cycle of the brain drain. It's a wonder there's anyone left in the state with enough sense to tie their own shoes.
In defense of Nebraska, let me just say that it is not true that Nebraskans have to take off their shoes and socks to balance their checkbooks. Many of them don't have checkbooks.
"Senator Nelson skillfully uses GOP talking points..."
There was nothing skillful about it. That was one ugly, unartful display.
senator ben nelson , a douchbag for the ages! love his toopie
DINO-BOT
Really. You mean he's interviewing another reckless, dumb republican?
I just don't think Colbert is all that funny. Sorry.
I never have. I always thought he didn't deserve the accalades he's been getting - and this is despite the fact that I am not a conservative, that I 'get' the satire, and that I adore Jon Stewart. Colbert's schtik is just getting old, whereas Stewart just gets funnier and more relevant as time goes by.
Me @ 38:
Exactly. I was watching this interview on the edge of my seat while it aired, praying that Colbert would confront him on the Cheney funding decision. Unfortunately, the interview came and went without peep, and it marked the first day that I have a lowered opinion of Colbert. I used to love Colbert, but ever since he's shown that the laughs come before being an American (in the form of tough, direct questions for political guests). In other words, I respect that he's a very talented entertainer but America is currently in a state of constitutional and military crisis. As a result, I personally look to the Daily Show and Colbert as the only way to see someone call these issues as they really are. So, sadly, it looks like the news section of the Daily Show is all that's left.
Andy
Folks these guys are comedians. If Colbert or Stuart miss a tough question (and they don't miss many) it only goes to cement their central point which is that the mainstream media are not doing their job. If Comedy Central is our last hope for actual journalism then we are truly screwed.
As for who is funnier? Colbert is a genius. Stuart is a God. It is so refreshing to see satire and farce done so well. Colbert seldom breaks character and Stuart just hammers away at the nonsense these idiots who call themselves leaders put out. They have changed the world. They have helped swing things so that Dems can win again. Watch out Dems, if you deserve it you will not be spared the wrath of TDS when your time comes...
I don't think we will get the truth in September. People who don't agree with the President lose their careers.
Ben Nelson
TROGLODYTE
Gotta agree with Sparky Robs above: Was avid viewer of Jon Stewart and loved his satire/humor and guest spots. Colbert takes political satire to a higher degree in not only honing into the 'bone of the matter but drills further into the marrow." And he does it with his own signature of 'finesse.' Go Stephen Colbert and love to Jon.
A fan.
The Republicans are vile, craven and in some cases just plain evil, but idiots and fools such as Nelson don't help things any.
it is interesting that the first measure he mentioned was oil. Also, what kind of an idiot keeps referring to Al-quida over and over again when in reality we are fighting both sides of the equation. The Sunni's allied with Al-quida and the Shiia's allied with Iran - talk about no win. Dont these idiots in congress have any brain cells left or are they all spineless , mindless lemmings
Don't get me started on this alleged Democrat Nelson. Elected as a Democrat but he has always voted with the Republicans. Him and Senator Hagel should really just trade political parties. His office is getting tired of hearing from me. And his useless prewritten email replies to my emails are getting less frequent. On Friday I called and asked the young lady taking the calls if Senator Nelson understood what the "power of the purse" was. I told her Nelson needed to get a spine and maybe vote with the Democrats once in a while. I could tell by her tone, I wasn't the first to mention this her.
Colbert hits so hard and fast sometimes they don't even see it coming. "Thank you for supporting our President"? ROTFLMAO!! That's exactly what these idiots pseudo-liberal tools deserve and more. Nothing more embarrassing than being labeled a Bush supporter these days. When are voters gonna wake up?
For those wondering when Nelson will be back on the ballot, you have a while to wait. He was last reelected in 2006, giving us until 2012 to find a suitable Democrat to take his seat.
As a Lincolnite I remember quite well when Ben was elected and let me tell you as sick as this sounds, all of us on the left thought he would be less of a GOP yes man than his opponent. Watching him trot out the old familiar GOP talking points has me wondering... anyway I'm curious if the (D) stamp next to his name could actually save him next election cycle I have a hard time believing this sort of callous ignorance to actual facts would fly from a Republican after all we've seen, but it might be deemed acceptable since he has the ability to distance himself from the president... Then again I have to remind myself I live in Nebraska and we do loves our conservatives WOO-HOO aint pointless war with non-Americans great!!!
what a fool, tool and a sad, sad representative for NE...
Oh I just love the cut off!!!!
I'm a Nebraskan and not a big Ben Nelson fan. However, would anyone here rather have Pete Ricketts in the Senate? I guess most of the other Nebraskans in this thread voted for Ben Nelson in 06 and they know that a more liberal democrat has no chance of being elected in this state. It's crazy to hear people talk about finding a better democrat to run 2012...they won't get elected here (sad but true).
Jordan and Evan, and other Nebraskans who responded, you are are correct. We have little choice but to go with Nelson, and that is sad.
Now excuse me, I have to go get my loafers on. Can't use shoes with strings...
