Daily Show: Senator David "DC Madam" Vitter

tds-vitter.jpg Jon makes the obvious point about the Senator Vitter scandal that the media chooses to ignore -- namely, that the story is a story because a) he is one of the Senate's most outspoken defenders of "Traditional Marriage"; and b) he refuses to resign despite calling upon President Clinton to resign over the Lewinsky scandal. Is it really that hard to connects the dots on this?

Hypocrites!! Both vitter and his wife excoriated Clinton for his Monica blowjob, yet try to brush this incident off as a mere pecadillo. In fact, vitter called for Clinton's resignation.

Why are these religious freaks so f**king hypocritical? Is it because they can either confess their sins on Saturday afternoon, or, as in the case of the fundies, simply accept Jeebus into their hearts again?

Religion is a personal choice, and should remain a personal observation. Close all the formalized churches - they are only breeding grounds for slime like vitter and his wife.

Hillary Clinton Shuns Fox Debates, But Pockets Murdochs' Money
July 16, 2007 10:04 PM

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards may not want to participate in debates sponsored by FOX News, but they like taking cash from officials of the company considered an arm of the conservative movement by many liberal Democrats.

In April, Edwards led the charge in refusing to participate in a Fox-sponsored debate. His deputy campaign manager, Jonathan Prince, told AP: "We believe there's just no reason for Democrats to give Fox a platform to advance the right-wing agenda while pretending they're objective."

Within days, Clinton followed suit. Unlike Edwards, Clinton did not directly attack Fox in announcing her decision.

"We're going to participate in the D.N.C. [Democratic National Committee]-sanctioned debates only. We've previously committed to participating in the South Carolina and Tavis Smiley debates," Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said. The Fox debate was not DNC-approved.

Obama joined in with Clinton. Bill Burton, Obama's spokesman, said a CNN-sponsored debate would be a more "appropriate venue."

But in her most recent filing at the FEC, Hillary Clinton reported two large donations from the very top of the Fox corporate structure.

On June 5, Rupert Murdoch, chairman of the News Corporation, gave her presidential bid $2,300. A few weeks later, his son, James R. Murdoch, chief executive of British Sky Broadcasting in London, gave $3,400. Altogether, NewsCorp/Fox executives gave at least $40,000 to the Clinton campaign.

In July 2006, the elder Murdoch hosted a fundraiser for Clinton's Senate re-election campaign, raising many eyebrows among Democrats. The Financial Times, which first disclosed the event, noted that Murdoch was a part of the "vast right wing conspiracy" named by Hillary Clinton as determined to destroy her husband's presidency.

She explained her willingness then to accept Murdoch's support to the FT: "He's my constituent and I'm very gratified that he thinks I'm doing a good job."

Asked about the Murdoch contributions to Clinton's presidential bid, Howard Wolfson, director of communications, said he had no comment.

Obama has taken more $14,000 from NewsCorp/Fox executives, although none came from the Murdochs themselves. In the broad network of NewsCorp/Fox holdings, with many Hollywood and entertainment entities, there are a substantial number of Democrats on the payroll.

Obama's contributions from NewsCorp/Fox executives included $2,300 each from Daniel Fawcett and Donna Isaacson; $1,000 each from Carla Hacken and Jospeh Hartwick; and a number of donations from other NewsCorp/Fox officials and employees. No comment from the campaign was immediately available.

Edwards received substantially less than Clinton or Obama. His contributions from NewsCorp/Fox executives Louis Supowitz, Jonathan Sarrow, Sean A. Riley, and Jonathan Sarrow total just under $1,000. There was no immediate comment from the Edwards campaign.

I do feel sorry for his wife. She's got a virtual gun to her head to "support" this asshole because the Republicans need his vote in the Senate. She chose to invest her life in her husband's career, and now that's forever tainted. Vitter's "brilliant" political career is over. He will at best be a journeyman Senator for a few more years.

The decent thing for Vitter to do would be do resign his seat to get them both out of the limelights, then cut his wife loose to let her live her own life - or stay with him if she genuinely wants to. Of course, since he's a stupendous idiot, that will never happen.

(Of course, she ought to just leave him, but given their past statements, I don't think it will happen.)

"I'm getting on a plane to Washington to vote..."

Most married guys who get caught screwing around have to come home every night to the frigid silence of their cheated-on wife, go in the kitchen and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for himself because the rest of the family ate a proper meal without him, then scurry down to the basement to ‘work’ on some ‘project’ just so he doesn’t have to be in the same room with a woman who at any minute might lunge at him with a paring knife. And this clown gets to go to Washington for weeks on end, eating at fine restaurants and relaxing – alone (when not with another hooker) - at his D.C. residence. That’s NOT punishment, that’s a commutation.

Tracey's picture

Isn't hiring a prostitute ILLEGAL? Why is the MSM ignoring that? Shouldn't he be PROSECUTED???

pine nut's picture

And prostitution is a crime in D.C. Let's not overlook that.

It was really sickening see him paint himself as the victim in all this. His wife, too. No sympathy for him or his nauseatingly loyal wife who seems to enjoy feeling persecuted. Feel sorry for the kids, but not those two up there whining about the media invading their personal lives!

Puh-leez! Vitter most definitely needs to be reminded of the hyper-invasive, voyeuristic nature of their investigation into Clinton's antics and how the X-rated transcripts were plastered all over the internets.

Ms. Vitter is no saint. She was NOLA D.A. Harry Connicks right hand (no pun intended) for years. I wonder if she felt as much as much sympathy as she asks, for the families and children of women she prosecuted for prostitution? They stood side by side as they traveled up the snakey and grisly Louisiana Repug Party ladder, building their glass house with good ole' GOP family values like... teamwork. Ms. Vitter ended her portion of the propaganda event by asking the media/world to leave her and the kids alone so they could enjoy the rerst of the summer - guess how that sits with me - a constituent of Vitter's who has a child in Iraq and family members dead or maimed in Bush/Vitter's war - while he and his family are holed up in their taxpayer funded Metairie, LA mansion, Vitter missing key votes for our recovery and to end this war. He must resign.

That's old news.

This is what will make your blood boil:

In a private weekly luncheon for Republican senators in the Capitol, Vitter briefly spoke and received a round of applause audible outside the room. Vitter told his colleagues he was sorry for the trouble he had caused them, and thanked them for their messages of support,

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said Vitter got a warm response from GOP colleagues when he addressed them during the party's weekly luncheon.

"It was a good thing for him to do," Thune said. "There was a lot of support."

Another point, Vitter is probably not wearing a suit that he bought off the rack. Why is his wife wearing what looks to be a not very expensive dress to a press conference? A dress that looks a great deal like leopard skin.

"And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you." (Matthew 6:5-6)

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may become clean." (Matthew 23:25-26)

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which on the outside look beautiful, but inside they are full of the bones of the dead and of all kinds of filth. So you also on the outside look righteous to others, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." (Matthew 23:27-28)

There is a culture of malfeasance in politics, we know it, they know it,and it doesn't seem to phase the guilty.
When a Senate race cost $millions to compete and the action required to collect funding is tantamount to prostitution, it is no surprise that polititions indulge themselves in such unlawful ways.
Prostitutes have worked the Caucuses in D.C. for many years, and they don't seem to be starving. At one time it was thought that if you "engage" a prostitute while in an airplane or helicopter(airspace) it was not a crime.
There are many, many, Congressmen, Senators,Advisors,Staffers,Aids,etc....and their spouses that are sweating it out right now, not because they feel guilty but because they don't want to face the ridicule of getting caught.
They caught A D.C. Mademe, however others will fill the void.
After all, Prostitution is a Washington tradition.

this morning i listened to particularly nauseating call-ins to New Orleans' local WWLTV (CBS channel 4 eyewitness morning show). the nagging sentiment abound is that "senator vitter should be forgiven and let him get back to work."

on another local news site, WDSU (NBC newschannel6), often posts terribly slanted/loaded "surveys." the question of the week is as follows:
What do you think about Senator Vitter's speech?
*I think he's apologized enough. We should let him move forward and get back to work in the Senate. (56% thus far)
*I think he needs to do some more explaining about his past behavior. (7%)
*I think it is unacceptable that he would not answer any questions. (38%)

even here in NOLA (more liberal/democratic than other parts of Louisiana) people aren't seeing it. of course, debauchery is an age-old fact of life down here, as is hypocrisy. people are used to their representatives talking out of their asses and crapping out of their mouthes.

but what is unbearable to me is the very obvious being ignored- the fact that vitter et al prop themselves on a "sanctity of marriage" platform, all the while trying to make it more difficult for Americans to live conduct private lives and deem what is and is not moral for themselves and not by mandates that don't include everyone as equal human beings.

it has nothing to do with forgiveness- the senator called for the impeachment of bill clinton over his desanctification of marriage (meanwhile recieving nookie from prostitutes on the side), and he prasied bob livingston for resigning (which is how vitter gained his post initially) of desanctifying his marriage (meanwhile paying $300 a pop for services rendered on canal). by his logic, it would not only be right for him to step down, but to have never accepted his position to begin with.

Mmmm Hmmm... Defense of Marriage indeed. What an A-hole.

I don't find this stuff amusing anymore.

Me, I prefer to go with Elvis Costello's opening verse in "The Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes":

Oh, well, I used to be disgusted
But now I try to be amused
'Cause since their wings have gotten rusted
The angels wanna wear my red shoes

An angel of darkness like Vitters ain't getting mine, however . . .

What I think is most entertaining is Vitter had to pay for it - Clinton's women were all volunteers.

And C) Clinton's affair was not illegal. Last I checked, procuring the services of a prostitute was in DC.

First, we need to stop trying to defend Clinton. Lewinsky worked for him. There's a reason we have laws against sexual harassment in the workplace, because of the disproportionate power distribution precluding true "consent." Clinton messed up. Did that have any relevance to his ability to do the job? No. Did it violate one of his key platform issues, for which his constituents elected him? No. Was it morally and legally reprehensible? Yes, but that is not the same as being disqualified to do the job.

Second, the V-man has to answer those questions differently. He was elected on a platform which he has now flaunted, but that platform defines HIS view and the view of his constiuents about what is important in doing his job. By his own standards, his own behavior shows he is incapable of doing the job. Unlike Clinton's, his own standards require him to resign.

Third, the woman's dress is clearly and artfully sending a signal. She does not want to be there, she is there because it is her job -- she is just a dofferent brand of prostitute, working for the money. She is also reminding us that a leopard does not change its spots. He can apologize all he wants, but he'll be goin' hoin' at the next opportunity.

Fourth, the multiple choice posts above failed to address the most common reason married men go to prostitutes:

(d) he can't get oral sex from his wife.

Stomper's picture

Obviously, I meant to say "different." "dofferent" isn't even a word.

Has anyone EVER seen such a look of utter disgust in their lives as that of Mrs Vitter when she looks at that SCUMBAG excuse of a husband she is STUCK with? Obviously some kind of deal was struck involving a payoff, because face it folks, THAT AINT LOVE I see in her eyes... that is the look of revulsion.

You're right, but I don't think anyone's defending Clinton.

I think all anyone has ever said was his personal infidelity (and ensuing coverup) weren't impeachable offenses.

Nor does anyone believe Vitter should step down on the basis of his personal infidelity. The fact is, he broke the law. There aren't laws against infidelity, but there are laws against paying for sex.

And as for "sexual harassment," you're mistaken as to the legal nature of sexual harassment in the workplace.

Had Clinton made her promises of promotions (i.e. used his power) to coerce sex from Lewinsky, it would be sexual harassment.

Had he made her uncomfortable with his advances, it would be sexual harassment. So far as I'm aware, she was a willing participant and didn't gain anything, or suffer, from the relationship.

Had he sexually harassed her, the $50 million "independent" investigation certainly would have taken that route.

Regardless, Vitter is a prick for blaming his "enemies." His "enemies" didn't point a gun to his head and force him to have sex with prostitutes.

He needs to grow some 'nads and accept responsibility for his words and actions.

He's a criminal who should be prosecuted, and worse, a complete phony who's been elected on words and values he obviously doesn't even believe in.

Step down, Vitter!

Milo's picture

This picture brings the whole thing home to me.
Mrs. Vitter is in serious emotional and psychological trouble. She may have called for Clinton's impeachment over the White House blowjob, but let's not forget that she didn't do anything wrong. She believed Clinton should have been impeached and she explained what she would do if her husband did anything close to infidelity. She said it so confidently because she really believed in her husband and their seeminly shared moral standards.
Now she has to face that not only is her husband a lying, hypocritical sociopath, but also that he made a fool out of her, publicly, exposed her to the scorn and ridicule of any Joe or Jane Blow with time to kill on-line. It's bad enough for anyone to find out that the person closest to them was utterly false - the worst comes when you have to face the fact that you were stupid enough to believe and trust the spouse who betrayed them.
Looking at her face exhibits a crushing desolation, sorrow and staggering disorientation.
This lady ain't Hillary Clinton. But maybe, in retrospect, it would have been better for Hillary to have exhibited her horror at Bill's betrayal of her - and all of us. Like it or not, we Dems *also* demand a moral high ground - on treating everyone with respect. We may not preach it from a position of lily-purity, but we do expect more from our icons than Clinton showed his wife.
I wish Mrs. Vitter well, and hope she finds some help. I'm not surprised that Vitter is amoral, but these endless episodes of recurrent Schadenfreude is not a good thing for the soul or the mind.
Milo

Hypocrite, double-standard, etc. These are not words in the Wingnut Dictionary. Their aides and staffers keep them around though to offer up for use agianst anyone they don't like. If you listen and read closely, a large number of current and future Neos do not seem to have been paying much attention in their English classes, and I suspect that is why they all parrot our most illiterate of presidents, George "Burning" Bush. When his words are not available they get Cheney to leak something to the Times and they just repeat that.
