Falcons' Vick Indicted In Dogfighting Case

vick.jpgWaPo:

A federal grand jury in Richmond indicted Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and three other men yesterday on charges related to their alleged operation of a dogfighting ring based at a property Vick owns in southeastern Virginia. Vick, one of the NFL's most exciting players, was charged with competitive dogfighting and conducting the venture across state lines.

This is just sick. The NFL can't run away from this one...

If Pacman got suspended all year for "making it rain" in a strip club, Vick better get it big time for torturing man's best friend...

My cat, Fred the Cat, will be posting about this on Friday. Just like my cat, I'm disgusted as hell. If Vick is found guilty, I hope they give him the maximum penalty. What the fu*k was he thinking? Anyone who would do this is a heartless son of a bitch.

This really doesn't seem very sick to me, at least not compared to factory farmed cattle and hogs or the various chicken abattoirs that litter the entire country.
Not that I think it's okay, it just doesn't seem any more horrific than the way we treat animals that are considered as food.

Everyone will distance themselves from Mr. Mexico, with the possible exception of those who embrace the thug lifestyle. Democrats, Republicans, football fans and, most certainly, the sports fans of Atlanta- who happen to be the most fair-weather fans in the country.

Dog fighting is about as low as one can go - worse than boxing and ultimate fighting, worse than cockfighting and bullfighting, and any other blood "sport" one can name. It is organized torture of animals by other animals, with absolutely no redeeming value. Period.

This is yet another sorry chapter in the Vick family saga. Remember when Vick first started for Atlanta, following the injury of his teammate, which was met with cheers from Vicks family and friends? And let us not forget his illustrious brother Marcus.

Good riddance to the whole lot of them!

Anyway, I don't think you have to worry about the NFL handing down a strict punishment. It will indisputably be significant, if not career ending, but unlike many of the readers of sites like these the NFL will take its time and let the justice system do its job bringing the facts to bear. Once the veracity of the charges is undeniable the NFL will hand down punishment. Until then, I applaud them for being cautious and patient.

Dogfighting is a sick "sport". Anyone who is involved in it should be punished to the full extent of the law. Let's keep in mind though that this is still "alleged". Not proven. Unless of course we want to act like the majority of repugs that I know that love to convict others before all the facts are in, while still ignoring their own sins of course.

More from the AP:

Fifty-four pit bulls were recovered from the property during searches in April, along with a “rape stand,” used to hold dogs in place for mating; an electric treadmill modified for dogs; and a bloodied piece of carpeting, the documents said.

The documents said the fights usually occurred late at night or in the early morning and would last several hours. The winning dog would win from “100’s up to 1,000’s of dollars,” and participants and spectators also bet on the dogfights.

Fights would end when one dog died or with the surrender of the losing dog, which was sometimes put to death by drowning, strangulation, hanging, gun shot, electrocution or some other method, according to the documents.

Petty pathetic.. Michael Vick had the NFL in the palm of his hand litterally... Everyone was so pining for him to be the real deal in Atlanta.. The charactor from Any Given Sunday come to life and conquering the league and setting records, rewriting the job of QB in the modern age and yadda yadda yadda... I'm a big football fan myself... And I was expecting him to settle down and be a big star too.. So all I can come up with is...Michael? Yer an idiot dude!!!! I guess the truth is, you'd rather fight dogs (in a state where that's obviously illegal and the authorities actually take that illegal shit seriously)... and be a big playa amongst your after practice party buds instead of really applying yourself to the field of endeavor that just might have made you a millionaire for life.... and set up your family as well... Now? who knows beside maybe your lawyer... He'll get a little richer I'm sure...

Hope it was worth it... Cause after all the hoopla dies down, your NFL career? Pretty much done blud.. Six years in stir???? After that much time and with that kind of resume' in the staid old straighter than straight NFL, (yea, I know the reality puts the lie to that statement) but here's the bottom line... There is not a tale within the scope of NFL trivia or folklore anywhere that tells of a athlete at QB who at the high point in their football lives goes to jail for six years, comes out, on the downside of 30 and resumes that kind of career.. Just has never happened and I don't think Michael Vick is the person to write that particular tale....

Mikey, you just might have to start thinking, arena league or maybe Canada if you actually want to play after you get out, and you have somehow managed to stay in shape and up to speed on that rare skill of quarterbacking... Maybe the Georgia Force will give you a look... Ya know whats really sad is the countless kids out there in T.V. land who was looking up to you and thought the world of you and wanted to use you as a role model and something to aspire too.. Maybe you or others will think that comment unfair, but unfair or not, you set yourself up to be exactly that when you signed that first Atlanta Falcon contract... I guess if there is a pyhrric upside, it's that you apparently aren't going to be killing any more couches careers this seaon.... Of course thats a little late for Jim Mora...JD

Golden Boy's picture

Losers allegedly didn't fare too well with Michael Vick. His pit bulls were often summarily executed after losing fights, according to a federal indictment that portrays a disturbing picture of animal cruelty. In April, just before authorities raided his property in rural Virginia, the Falcons' star quarterback was there "rolling" some of his pit bulls -- that is, putting them through test fights to see if they were "game," federal authorities said. Eight of the animals didn't make the cut, and were executed by Vick and two co-defendants by "hanging, drowning and slamming at least one dog's body to the ground," authorities allege.

I'm hoping "a guy" is a vegetarian.

"Dog fights" is just too benign to describe what happens. We're not talking about two animals who are fitted with gloves in a refereed ring.

This is dog slaughter and blood letting, which humans orchestrate. Dogs are trained to attack, chew, maim, kill other dogs, usually in a filthy blood-spattered ring.

Losing dogs are often tossed in an alley or pile of rubbish, where they are left to die a slow, agonizing death.

That's the big deal.

Humans who engage or participate in these activities are vile. Often, adults will bring their small children (5 years old) to these slaughters, as audience members. It's all sick.

Domestic dogs are the most social of animals, and they're loyal and loving to their human owners, even when their owners mistreat them. Dogs will sacrifice their lives to protect their owners, and have been known to save the lives of people they don't know.

I say, throw the legal book at this son-of-a-bitch, and at anybody else who participates in these crimes.

I'm liking the idea of the lifetime ban. I'm a firm believer in the "sportsmanship" aspect of any organized sport. I don't believe that any human being that can callously torture animals by teaching them to rip each other into shreds understands that concept.

Sports fans are not uneducated hicks. Many sports require an understanding of strategy, knowledge of all players strengths and weaknesses, and the ability to make separate players perform together as a team. While I'm sure some football fans revel in the violence of the sport, many of us enjoy debating the choices made by teams, coaches and players.

We all should care because of the inherent brutality of what this man did. The humanity in us should have a strong reaction to all forms of torture, whether it be humans, pets, wildlife, etc. Yes, the US is currently doing things I violently oppose. Our minds and hearts are large enough that we can have a visceral reaction to this as well.

I've been following this story with great interest from the beginning.Several years ago,2 pits bred for fighting got into my back yard and killed one of my dogs and seriously injured the other. It was a horrific scene, bloody paw prints all over the patio door screen, the lattice ripped away from our deck skirt...I guess my dogs were trying to find any place to get away.
My wife came home for lunch and discovered the scene and called me.They were still in our yard.I came home and killed them both with a ruger blackhawk.
I f-ing hate pits, but this story killed me on a number of levels. The atrocities committed against the dogs, that a man like Vick is involved...meaning he is an overpaid f-ing thug that has shown his ass in the biggest way and then tries to deny it.What a joke. What a sorry ass punk. How could he NOT know this was happening???And the feds apparently have reliable evidence that he was deeply involved.
I hope they throw him under the jail and forget about him.

It means nothing.

Because we are what?

Americans? Humans?

Get a grip and stop whining.

Nature is red in tooth and claw. The apes fight over baboon blood...

And we should be so different? Pshaw!

Sometimes I think humanity is composed of those who read "Black Beauty" and "Beautiful Joe" and understood what it meant...

And those who do not.

And those who do not...

Sacrifice their humanity.

I partly agree. Not all the information is available yet. The facts need to come out first, and until we have all the details it's unfair to condemn NFL officials for not taking action yet.

And regardless of what happens, it is entirely prejudicial and unfair to condemn the whole of the NFL for the conduct of one twisted jackass.

League officials can't take action yet because this is, as far as the NFL is concerned, the first strike. Pacman had multiple arrests over the last 2 years, you can't compare. Not to worry, this dog murderer's football career is over. Yeah, NFL teams are first and for most profit-generating businesses (Well, except the green bay packers, which are collectively owned by a cooperative of fans and run not-for-profit). That is an interesting take. You do have a point.

when the ID10T found his way through an airport with his stash hidden in a water bottle, all 'evidence' and some tapes 'disappeared'. That ain't happening this time!

BUT, the NFL and the Falcons will have a hard time 'splainin' why Vick is even at a practice. Can the NFL or the player's union explain 'due process' to anyone who remembers his combination of vehement denial with 'ain't really nothing wrong with dog fighting on private property'.

It was hard to stop laughing at the idiocy, but it reveals how much this society is addicted to it's diversions. And THAT might just be the worst symptom of this whole mess. Mike's diversion was something more brutal than the 'game' he plays and the game Mike plays is the most brutal there is outside of the pure 'combat sports'. And I do watch football, like many people.

It has been pretty well established that people who abuse animals are often those who abuse children and humans as well. Those who think it isn't worth reporting on C&L are ignorant of this association and dogfighting as a whole. Dogs that don't make the cut were drowned and electrocuted. Sounds like good clean fun to me! This is not the same as hunting. I just looked at a youtube video of Vick that had over 77,000 views. Americans love their dogs and they are pissed!! and I'm not even a dog person! I am interested in humane education though. The type of education that makes you understand the benefits of compassion for other living things.

Sorry but no. Pits love people, they want to sleep on your bed, they want to be exercised an hour a day, they want to be chased and play games, they want treats. They do NOT want to be torn up in a fight. You must be talking about the poor dogs whose warped, pathetic, completely wimpy loser owners have brought them up in an unnatural way - and then pits will try and please them because all these dogs want to do is please their owner.

My pit is beautiful and fit and is one of the happiest, sweetest dog anywhere. We walk four miles a day, she goes to a doggie day care where she plays with up to 50 other dogs, the neighbor kids include her in touch football games and you don't know what you are talking about. So many people will ask me about my pit and the real men are the ones that say, "I've had a pit and it was the sweetest dog ever - they are given a bad rap."

Only a sick, sadistic, coward would enjoy dogfighting.

The longest sentence he can get is just 3 years... seems to me that if somebody has such a depraved mind they shouldn't be allowed on the streets ever again.

Mix's picture

If you think it ends with Vick, you'd be surprised. I've dealt with a number of local sports figures' animals, and without exception, they're fighting breeds. And I'm not talking just about the players; coaches are on in on this as well.

Now I can't say for certain whether or not these specific dogs are involved in dogfighting, but only one of these owners actually took the time to raise a well-adjusted and well-trained pooch. Each of the other four owners took very little responsibility for their animals, and have, at this juncture, all been banned from this enterprise.

When I say local sports figures, I'm talking not only NFL, but NBA as well. In fact, its the b-ballers who have the worst dogs, hands-down. None of their animals were fixed, all were highly dog-aggressive, and a good number of them had their ears and tails cropped in a fighting style. The footballers I've been willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but the basketballers' dogs were suspiciously ideal for fighting.

Dunno, this is just rumor-mongering, but I tell you, there's some pretty messed-up people in professional sports.

Mike Curtis, a linebacker for the old Colts (the real Colts, back when they were in Baltimore) once said that, absent football, he would have spent his youth brawling and beating on people -- and then his middle and old age in jail, if he lasted that long. The NFL does provide some otherwise violent men an outlet for violence and cruelty -- and a path to discipline themselves if, like Curtis, they chose to walk it. In Vick's case, the NFL wasn't up to the task; but possibly the NFL has lowered its standards to the point where the values of the sport that gave purpose to men like Curtis are no longer respected.
