I've suspected for some time that a lot of the trolls I encounter on various progressive websites are professional.

I'm just surprised it has taken the Pentagon this ling to get into the act. If it has.

Information... or DIS-information... it's all the same thing... as long as it serves the agenda-of-the-day.

John McCain's "Straight Talk Express" used to hand out posters that said, "SPINNING IS LYING," and he was doing pretty good with that untill Bush's campaign machine accused him of fathering an illigitimate Asian child (which was nothing but lying-spin created in South Carolina.)

I'm not surprised that the Pentagon is ramping up efforts to saturate American information channels with lies and half-truths. THAT'S HOW THESE PEOPLE DO BUSINESS.

Big Dan's picture

Take a look at this, in that Raw Story article about the Pentagon Spin Machine:

"Silverstein reports that the "Communications Outreach" program "reportedly provides talking points and briefings to retired military officials who now support (bd: now support? what does THAT mean? What about the vets NOT onboard?) the administration in appearances as media pundits." The genesis of the idea came in 2006, "when the press and retired senior military officials were pummeling Donald Rumsfeld.""

"Also on board are Erin Healey, a former junior assistant press secretary at the White House (bd: !!! former junior WH press secretary!!!), Julie George, who formerly worked as deputy coalitions director for Rick Santorum (bd: RICK SANTORUM!!!!!!!!!), and perhaps most telling is another person reportedly involved with the operation is the presence of Jocelyn Webster, "who formerly worked in the White House’s political operation for Sara Taylor (bd: She's being questioned about the DOJ firings, which were to DISENFRANCHIZE DARKIES! IT'S CALLED "CAGING"!), the Karl Rove aide who now finds herself in a bit of hot water.""

Some things you can't make up. On, Morning Joe, Andrea Mitchell called in and they were talking about Edwards' wife jumping on Hillary Clinton. Then they went on to talk about when Ms Edwards called into Hardball to talk to Ann Colture. Ardrea accidentally called Ann Colture, Al Colture. Quickly she corrected herself. You could hear someone snicker on Joe's show. Didn't see who it was.

sh@dow @ 5:

There is little progressive about endless pontification. If you want to save the USA it is long past time to hit the streets in mass. It is long past time to organize and stage national strikes. Long past time for actual action consisting of peace marches across the land. What is progressive about endlessly repeating this experiment that is only killing time now as the government marches into a dictatorship.

Well said.

More importantly, isn't this illegal? As illegal as the 'fake' news reports the White House was paying for to support thier isuues? When are any of these asses going to be arrested for breaking laws that are already on the books?

Bush Bites's picture

Let them go ahead and call Rush and tell him what a great war they got going.

They always overlook the one thing that the American people have finally figured out:

Bush is in charge. Bush will screw it up. Bush always screws it up.

No matter how they try to justify it, the mission is f*cked because an idiot is in charge.

besides investigating the use of tax money for this office of dis information, they need to investigate whether any military psychological operations assets were used in developing the distributed product.

Holy CRAP! You people in the U.S. are screwed. Your military has begun a dis-information campaign against you. You, apparently, are no longer a functional democracy.

Are goverment is like a cansor it has to be removed. We the people of the United States need to do what the Declaration od indepedence says to do alter it or adbolish it and start a new goverment. It is time for the American people to remove all the garbage in Washington and clean it out. Remove the president and vice president all congress and senate and all top office jobs and court judges. Install the Constitution as is and elect all new people as long as they where never been in goverment, revamp all our laws for the American people, invoke lobbist laws to keep the crooks from spreading there cansor to new goverment law makers, and many new laws on election of new officals running for jobs.

talking point messages in the armhy have been officially implementedas discussed in what is referred to as the

The Army 2007 Strategic Communication Guide, and strangely enough every soldier has been "Tasked" to tell the story.

The below website tells only one part of it and is publically accessable, while the communication guide is only available to those that have secure access.

while pentagon blogging may be new i think talk radio has been using professional callers, maybe from think tanks, for a long time.

on occasion i've heard what really seemed like a coordinated succession of lucid callers providing a unified message in support of the white house, each repeating a different talking point or counter argument or excuse for administration critics. sometimes that can happen naturally for a few callers in a row but not for 6 or 10.

the internet is a more specialized tool. talk radio can blast tens of millions of an often captive audience with hours and hours of uncontested repetition. 20% plus of americans say they get their news there. TR is the only medium that can 'catapult the propaganda' and has been very successfully used to do so. it creates a giant bandwagon the rest of the lazy MSM can use for establishing talking points, distortions, lies, swiftboating, threats to politicians, etc.

coltergeist's picture

They are of a piece.

It is illegal for the Pentagon to disseminate propaganda into the American Media. So they get "surrogate"s to do it. Retired military officers, who are not technically part of the Pentagon. There is NO LAW that Republicans will not try to circumvent.

Robt's picture

I understand that Rummy still show up to an office at the Pentagon.

No one know what for, why he's there and at who's authority. He clearly is not in the official administration anymore.

Perhaps this is one of Cheney's dark side antics through Rummy at the Pentagon?

CappuccettoRosso's picture

It is time to call ALL of these 'efforts' by ONE common name, used under all dictatorship/totalitarian/ fascist rules:

PROPAGANDA !!!

slicing and dicing which flunkey originated from which cesspool gets people lost - by all means lets keep doing it (it's amazing that such trash has such staying power provided by taxpayer funds), but, always use the common denominator understood by all:

PROPAGANDA !!!

Pentagon, WH, prez Cheney's, GOP, Congress propaganda is NO different from Goebbels ministry !

It was a violent morphine addict Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering, second in command of the Nazi Third Reich, who said (Nuremberg Diary):

""Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. ...Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country ""

Keep repeating it with the name of originator until EACH AMERICAN will know/understand it ! Red, or, blue..

I couldn't have said it better. Of course it will be easy for people who use reason 98% of the time to realize who is spreading disinformation. Unfortunely, most Americans are dumber than a bag full of dicks.. Sucks to be us I suppose.

Bob Roberts's picture

So...in addition to perfectly valid arguments against the GOP talking points, can we also use propaganda? I think we should. I think the ends (removing the political power of the GOP) justify most means.

Liberals don't have access to the same media coverage that conservatives do (which makes publicizing the liberal position more difficult). However, I certainly agree with an earlier poster who said that we should be trying to frame issues in anti-Republican terms. Pro-birth instead of pro-life. Colonialism instead of the war on terror.

Big Dan's picture

"trank Says: while pentagon blogging may be new i think talk radio has been using professional callers, maybe from think tanks, for a long time."

I've been saying that for YEARS! Hannity's callers who are (supposedly) black, ALWAYS begin with, "Sean, I'm a black guy, and........." Who talks like that? The WHITE callers don't say, "Sean, I'm a white guy, and...." And the "liberals" (actors) who call say, "Sean, I'm a liberal, but I agree with everything you say." COME ON! Do they think we're stupid?

Big Dan's picture

Or, "Sean, I'm gay, but even I am against gay marriage". COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Sean, I'm ____________ , but even I am against _______________"

"_____________" = "____________" (liberal, gay, black)

It's a FAKE INFOMERCIAL! PROPAGANDA!

Paul's picture

I think the inspector general would want to know about what the Pentagram is doing - I thought it was illegal to use government funds and offices to propagandize the American People.

duncanidho's picture

its not propaganda when its "Public Affairs".

that's how they are funding this, as public affairs, lobbying to the senators and decision makers to ensure the monetary support and resources remain, while not tasking joe citizen or the priviledged few to make economic sacrifices to support the war effort.

The talking point messages are intended to get a bigger part of the defense budget...

But the talking points don't really address the issue about "We are at war Boys..join now and fight the enemy the world is at peril.."

The only way we can get past all this is to have a democrat introduce a declaration of war bill that removes the war powers act, eliminates war profiteering, and brings back the draft.

Then when the republicans vote against it... everyone will see beyond a pale of a doubt they weren't interested in winning.

They want a limited war without end, for economic gain, based on questionable evidence.

Faux News's picture

Public affairs or private pr cos like Rendon.
Remember the classic exchange between Bush and soldiers who repeated their SCRIPTED lines.

MCD's picture

Before everybody gets too worried... remember... everything that bush has tried to do in his entire life has been a failure... he may be pres but he is a failed pres... he is running a failed war... he may try to take over the country... but he will fail. Apparently it is his destiney to fail.

Bright Creature's picture

MCD: I agree with you if your telling people not to panic. However, we shouldn't be naive. People who fail so much have this awful tendency to do desperate things.
