The New Republic's Johann Hari recently went on the National Review cruise and then filed this extraordinary report about what he witnessed (the full article is also available here). Hari mingled in with the NR faithful who, unaware that he was a reporter, provided him with material like this:
I lie on the beach with Hillary-Ann, a chatty, scatty 35-year-old Californian designer. As she explains the perils of Republican dating, my mind drifts, watching the gentle tide. When I hear her say, " Of course, we need to execute some of these people," I wake up. Who do we need to execute? She runs her fingers through the sand lazily. "A few of these prominent liberals who are trying to demoralise the country," she says. "Just take a couple of these anti-war people off to the gas chamber for treason to show, if you try to bring down America at a time of war, that's what you'll get." She squints at the sun and smiles. Like a long-running sitcom with declining ratings, aging stars and bereft of new ideas, the magazine has been reduced to bizarre stunts in a desperate plea for attention. This week, that desperation took the form of Michael Ledeen slandering the families of American troops going off to war in Iraq. And that was just for openers.

From what I have read, this ruthlessness they speak of, is what caused the insurgency. There were a few Generals that believed the mission was to free the Iraqis and acted accordingly. The problems began because most didn't get it and were ruthless. Breaking into homes in the middle of the night and detaining 10s of thousands, of which over 90% were innocent, pissed them off. Bush ordered retaliation strikes, against Generals wishes, but they followed orders. A psychotic civilian, that hid from service, should never been allowed to give military orders.

Okay, I have seen at least two different stories about this verkakte cruise, all written from a distinctly non-conservative viewpoint, and I'm beginnin' to wonder if half the cons weren't just undercover lefty writers!
Hari's reporting reminds me of an exchange that took place between myself and my neighbor a few weeks back. This woman was insistent that I must support the troops even allowing that I could have an antiwar point of view [how magnanimous, I thought, for her to grant me that right]. I told her that even though I do not support the mission of the troops [i.e. brutalizing and terrorizing the Iraqi people], I did think that the best way to support them was to remove them from that slaughterhouse as quickly as possible. My declarations fell upon deaf ears. Perhaps not too surprising since she had also expressed the belief that Bush has always told the truth and that no criticism of the government should be allowed during a time of war, despite her claiming that I also had the right to speak out against the war. I could see, in hindsight, from the look of intense hatred that was on her face, that she was more in accord with the wishes of the woman who was on that cruise ship than with me for daring to voice a dissenting point of view in a very conservative community. These superpatriots simply reinforce the idea that when one waves the flag and yells patriotism, that their emotions are very quick to overrule the mind.
Hillary-Ann should do us all a favor and put a Hand-Gun to her head.
That young lady need to turn her story around. They have Ann Coulter who wanted to poison a Supreme Court judge, because she doesn't like his stance. He may be gone by now, but she said it. The Democrats are not the ones who are destroying the country, nor the ones who are sending the young people over to be killed in an illegal, unjustified war. She should take a good look in a mirror, she might not like what she sees, though.

Rather than insulting these people, or debating them (does it sound like they are interested in freedom of expression or even due process of law?), take their own logic and use it against them. Ask Hillary-Ann why she is lying on the beach while all these liberals are demoralizing the country. Ask the Floridian why he believes the cruise "is the best money I ever spent" when others are donating time and money to help supply American troops with body armor? And why is Ann Coulter, who sees traitors everywhere (liberals, the Democratic Party, the media), wasting her time appearing on a comedy show when her beloved country is in such dire peril?
The fucked thing about all this is that evil regimes don't just up and quit, they have to be destroyed to be gotten rid of. If you look at the UPDATE III of Glenn Greenwald's Column, which quotes this story , you will see that while these views are "lunatic" they are, frighteningly, becoming more
"mainstream".
Here is some quotes he mentions (and his conclusion):
* Michael Reagan's call for Howard Dean to be hanged as a traitor for having said the war in Iraq could not be won;
* Ann Coulter's arguing that "We need to execute people like John Walker in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too. Otherwise, they will turn out to be outright traitors";

In light of this record, it is difficult -- one could say impossible -- to argue reasonably that any of the comments reported by Hari, including the call by Hillary-Ann to put a few antiwar liberals in the gas chamber, are truly aberrational.
I think it is important for people to be made aware of the fact that there are people who are thinking like this. more importantly, the people on this cruise aren't just random "nuts" lurking on the internet. Many are very influential and powerful people (unfortunately) in this country.
Ignore them at your peril. ( I also highly recommend you read John Dean's book "Conservatives Without Conscience" for a detailed look at what has gone wrong with the Conservative movement, and how it has evolved from the Goldwater era, where conservatives tended to be libertarian, and mistrusted a strong Executive branch, to today's Authoritarianism, with its belief in almost monarchical powers for the Executive branch. It's an excellent book, and Dean himself is a conservative (of the old Goldwater school)
Finally, one note for Errol (Comment #30). I am in agreement with your viewpoint, but I disagree with you on one point. That woman was no "patriot" super or otherwise. You and those who recognize and support the rights and freedom to criticize our government are the true patriots in this country.
We should not cede that term to those who wish to suppress freedom and dissent. They are not patriots, because they betray the very foundations on which this nation was founded. They of course have a right to their views on the war, but they do not have the right to suppress freedom of speech, even in time of war.
I'm tired of those on the right thinking they have a monopoly on love of country. they need to realize that we liberals (and yes I am proud to be a liberal, especially when you look at what liberals have given to this country) have acted out of love for our country. We love the USA and want (and demand) it to live up to the ideals upon which it was founded, and that are espoused in the Declaration of Independence: that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator (whomever you believe that creator to be (even Nature as Jefferson himself believed)) with certain unalienable rights, among these, life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. To establish governments which secure these rights; and, when such governments become destructive of those ends, to alter OR ABOLISH THEM.
these are LIBERAL ideas. In fact they were REVOLUTIONARY ideas. Jefferson would probably be declared an Enemy Combatant and locked away at Gitmo if he were alive today; I've no doubt of what he would think of Bush/Cheney (or should it be Cheney/Bush?) He would declare them to be Tyrants, and would no doubt advocate revolution.
Anyway, My point is it's high time we liberals reclaim the banner of patriotism for our own. We, not the conservatives, are the true heirs, of the founders, or at least of their ideals.

That's what you get when I try being ironic.
I find it interesting that Jonah Goldberg thinks the key to success is simply having the will to win, considering their dislike for the French it is kind of interesting that they should espouse a plan similar to 'Plan XVII' the French war plan at the beginning of WWI. Basically the will to fight and attack is all you need to win, didn't quite work that way for the French in the early part of the war.
There are times I'm glad I live far away. These years are one of them.
The thing to realise is that 'the enemy' isn't Republican or Democrat. From the perspective over here. it's what I call 'the American Prince' class - a bunch of people who think they have the right to rule, and everyone who isn't one of them is just a footstool or a servant or a traitor.
I've met Americans, and I know people who have been Stateside, and the general consensus is, 'good people'. Kind, warm and helpful are the three common words I hear. But it sure isn't reflected in the people who lead you. And a lot of these leaders haven't been voted in, they've seized power by means of stealth and money. The Vice President is just the top of the tree, they exist all the way through the upper echelon of society.
Once upon a time these people lived in England in the early 1600s, and in France in the mid 1700s, and it all ended badly for the poor. They are so full of certainty, so sure they are right, that no other opinion can enter their mind. They wined and dined and pretty much did what they pleased, and to whom they pleased.
And then one day the general populace rose up against them, and they were shocked!
You guys need a new revolution. Not with guns and bombs, but words and clear thinking and common sense, and by finding someone who is prepared to take a stand. And as someone wise once said, it's not just where you take a stand, but which way you're facing.
You will have to find a group of people who are impeccable and prepared to go toe to toe with this... there is no other word for it... evil. Not black evil as such. There is the evil of greed for power, a needy whiny, consuming greed it is too, but the real evil to be overcome is the evil of ignorance. Eyes need to be opened, and the only way to do it is by being better people than the other guys. Really better people.
Trouble is that this requires people without a criminal record, admission of drug taking or unpunished lawbreaking, illegitimate children, anything that can be used against them by conservatives as 'liberal slack-minded attitudes'. And in these relaxed times, where will such people be found?

Dave Neiwart at Orcinus has been tracking the sort of eliminationist rhetoric used by such as Hillary-Ann for some time, and trying to sound the warning about it.
And if Hillary-Ann would like to try carrying out her threat, she should keep in mind how many so-called 'libruhls' have the inclination to defend themselves, and thanks to the military service so many such chickenhawks have avoided, the training to do so effectively.
Pusillanimously advocate a 'live by the sword' attitude from the safety of your gated community...and those who are vastly better at the practical application of such a philosophy will show you why it's not such a good idea. Such threats against liberals should be considered in light of this.

The details and absurdity are both chilling and comic, but the saddest thing is that therewasn't a single detail that surprised me. The paranoid, authoritarian impulses on display aboard the cruise have been in evidence for quite a while among the Repugnican Party. What we have is merely evidence of the banality of evil.
