MTP-Feingold-Censure Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) spoke with Tim Russert on this morning's "Meet The Press" and stated he plans to introduce a resolution to censure President Bush in a few days. When asked if the Senate Democratic leadership is supporting him, Feingold only went so far as to say that he has spoken with them and that they are working with him to put the resolution together.

I should add that I know that Feingold and the Senate cannot initiate impeachment proceedings.

However, if Feingold were to publicly call for impeachment (as his colleague in the Senate, Barbara Boxer, has) that would have a major impact.

You are correct, it doesn't go far enough and it is a lame gesture considering impeachment must be started in the house, where there is the required majority and an increasingly angry populace that sees the House of Representatives as a lot of mushrooms enjoying the dark.
Start the impeachment. the members of the house are all going to TRY be elected again 2 novembers from now, few if any criminal party incumbents are going to be re elected. I hope we can rid ourselves of the schulers and the murthas that vote to continue war.
Where in the hell are the priorities? IF the house starts impeachment, the R-Al and CA and VA will all be forced to get on board and vote yeah. If they don't, they will be forcibly retired.

You would think that torture, the politicization theocratization of government departments, illegal spying on citizens, secret prisons, rendition, ignoring the rule of law, manipulating intelligence, an illegal war, and manifest incompetence on almost every front, both domestic and foreign, might be enough.

I'm pro-impeachment, too, but, for the hundredth time, *the Senate does not have the Constitutional authority to initiate impeachment.* That HAS to come from the House. So, all you folks who are bashing senators for "not having the balls" to start impeachment hearings are barking up the wrong tree. They CAN'T DO IT because the Constitution says so.

That being said, now is the time to write to Nancy Pelosi and your own representative and inform them of how strongly you feel. Don't just sit there. Do it. I've already gotten several responses back from both Pelosi and my own rep--a few of them unsolicited--because they know now that I'm paying attention and want some action.

We the people just have to come to grips with the fact that accountability will never be on the table and neither will impeachment. In a just world impeachment would already be a reality and trials would already be under way. The republicans are a lost cause - it is never about country with them, it is always about party and power. And the Democrats, well they just can not and will not exercise their responsibilities to the people. The people running our country are war criminals and that is NOT an exaggeration, that is a fact by anyone's definition. This democratic republic was a wonderful concept and worked pretty well for a very long time but I'm afraid it is over. It seems almost impossible that so many things can be corrected for us to get back on track. So sad - America RIP.

Speaking of censure, the headline on the latest issue of The Globe states that Laura Bush believes that because of his drinking, her husband is a "ticking time bomb" waiting to explode. Unfortunately, the former librarian wishes, according to the account in the paper, to wait until after GWB leaves office before going ahead with divorce proceedings. If this story is to be believed, this country would appear to be, despite his wife's concerns and rebuke, in imminent peril from Bush's dependency on liquor.

Other commenters are right. Censure is very mild and it is perplexing why Finegold would not want to be in favor of impeaching Bush and backing Kucinich's proposal of impeachment in light of the many transgressions that have occurred under his watch [violating the FISA act, starting an illegal war of aggression in Iraq, condoning torture, the use of extraordinary rendition]. This administration must be impeached before he starts ordering that Iran's nuclear facilities be bombed, thereby causing the the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Iranian people.

Russ is playing games. Censure is a joke. Indeed, it's a way to keep Bush in business.

While I understand the sentiment expressed by many here about censure being too little to late, I still have to give props to Feingold. He's been on the right side of the issue of censure and impeachment for a long time. From where I sit, the problem isn't so much Feingold as it is the rest of the Senators and Congresspersons. Feingold's position only has strength when others in the Congress stop being so chickenshit and do what they know is right.

I just replied to his email, that no, only impeachment will work. Censure might shame and restrain a normal administration. This is not normal. This administration has shown time and again that it is capable of neither shame nor restraint. Cheney and Bush must be removed from power by either impeachment or by the military. I don't much care which, any longer, but it needs to be sooner rather than later.

Again, he does not have the power to start impeachment, he can only push for censure. Now if impeachment goes forward, he can vote to convict.

Yes, and did you hear David Brooks' subsequent comments on Feingold's censure? He had the audicity to say it was a big mistake and just showed hyperpartisanship on the part of the democrats, and just when some of the Republicans were beginning to move to their side on the war. Never mind that the Republican's have demonstrated hyperpartisanship since they took control of Congress in the 90's, OR, and more importantly, their legal and moral obligation to hold this administration accountable for high crimes and misdemeanors. If Brooks had a moral compass and could manage to get his head out of Bush's behind he'd be encouraging the Republicans to do the right thing and support this censure resolution, and that's at the very least, when in fact we know these criminals deserve impeachment.

Too bad Sentaor Feingold isn't for impeaching Bush because "it would take up too much time." But he will never be convicted in the Senate needing a two thirds vote. The Senate can’t get 60 votes on issues that are less important. And the fallout of a House impeachment? As proven with the Clinton impeachment Bushit’s popularity will increase. Now what Democrat would want to see that happen.

I agree that impreachment is the way to go.
But I'm glad that Feingold is going ahead with the censure resolution. It keeps the kettle boiling for the moment.
Maybe when one of the more heavily funded of the democratic candidates for president comes out for impeachment, we can get the show on the road and force a change in course.
So far, they are cowering in the shadows.

I am in agreement with most of the above comments.
Impeachment is the only just action for what Bush is doing . It is the responsibility of Congress to impeach and remove him, for the thousands of crimes he has committed. It is time for Democrats to step up to the plate, and act as our founding fathers intended. If Republicans sabotage this necessary act, so be it, but at least there will be a permanent historical record of who stood up for what is right, and who didn't.

This is both a good idea, and a bad idea.

Good idea in that if he is censured, it will definitely tarnish the legacy Bush is busting ass to create.

Bad idea in that it's keeping them from actually doing anything that'll fix the problem.

Pelosi need not be an advocate for impeachment.
She needs merely to let it be generally known that impeachment is on the table, and that she will not stand in the way of any resolution that comes before the house,
but rather schedule it for debate and an up or down vote.

In the most recent national poll on the subject, 45% were in favor of impeachment. Figure out what that means. Only a minority of the people support such a move. That means that the only way that Bush could rally his support to at least fifty percent, and thus have added support to do what ever he wants with Iraq is by trying to impeach and convict him of something. 45%, folks, is not a majority, so it would destroy the Democrats. Get a grip on the reality of the situation. Cut off the War funds, and that will end the War. A futile impeachment marathon will only prolong it, and waste more lives.

Can They Make The Case For Impeachment?

From the run up to this war, to the continued waste of human life, we have not connected a logical series of dots that would explain and free us from this war.

We know the truth; I almost hate to say it because its been said so much. There were know WMDs, which were the primary reason given for going into this war. Well get this. When our president reflected on what he told Saddam Hussein he needed to do to prevent this war, I recall Hussein's officials frantically denying any existence of WMDs or any plans to acquire them. Our president had the nerve to say it was Hussein's choice to go to war because he would not heed his warnings. These are the continued reasons our president post for going to war in Iraq.

The saddest thing concerning Bush's actions is he could not say there were no WMDs, and he was wrong. After 600,000 lives loss, this Mother fucker is still talking as though he found the WMDs. Hell, he is either drinking or in denial so deep he cannot face any reality associated with the massive loss of human life his actions are responsible for. He has to obtain some sense of glory or he has to face the fact he is the same murderer Hussein is.

Even more sadder then Bush's inability to accept the truth is the media's inability to report the truth objectively. It appears, Fox news and their wantabees, CNN and MSNBC, by competing for conservative viewer-ship, have increased the president's powers exponentially. Before president lied to the American people Al Qaeda in Iraq was the principal force in Iraq, the media, for months, made the president's case by connecting everything to Al Qaeda in Iraq. The media's action served as a kind of subliminal programming, so that when Bush announced we were fighting Al Qaeda In Iraq, the public went along with it and did not equate it to an attempt to buy more time in Iraq. All Americans think Al Qaeda was responsible for 9/11, so they would not support the democrats attempts to remove our troops out of Iraq if they thought we were engaging Al Qaeda.

The Al Qaeda in Iraq claim alone is grounds for impeachment because it seeks to misinform the American people who is fighting this war for the sake of protecting oil interest. I could think of nothing else but the reported request, by Oil companies, for half the oil revenue generated from Iraqi oil production as a reason for staying in Iraq.

Censure is Not Worth the Time

Yes, I know the House has to bring impeachment charges, hopefully first against Cheney, then Gonzales, then Bush.
However, the Senate should be using the time to pave the way for what will be coming, either by trying to pass legislation that the nation needs and showing the Repubs to be uncaring when they filibuster or Veto it, or by holding more hearings, pressing for more documents, and force Bush to keep extending himself.

Basically, extend the crazy obstructionist illegal branch, let the Repubs go out on it, then cut it off when the House gives you the impeachment axe.

But remember - Cheney first. He is a tough nut, but he will go the furtherest out on the branch and eventually find his position illegal. Look at his arguments on the VP office and the executive branch. He shoots in the face firsts, then thinks.

I too, would like to see impeachment, but like many of the posters, I know the votes are not there (yet) in the Senate. And, yes, censure is toothless, but it is doable. I disagree with this idea, and Feingold gives the reason not to do it through the backdoor: it may not take up so much time and allow the Congress to get on with the important business.

I'm sick of weak willed Democrats. R's and D's have been playing good cop bad cop with the American people for too long. The are two sides of the same coin serving basically the same interests while providing the illusion of choice and accountability. Show me a Democrat that is proving otherwise. This country doesn't need a third party, it needs at least three more parties to REPLACE the "two" we are already stuck with.

Censure, more posturing without any concrete actions. The Democrat strategy seems clear to me, posture and put forth resolutions that won't pass, and keep ownership of the Iraq war squarely with the Republicans.

The reason is also clear. In a situation where there are no good choices, if one is responsible for a choice, naysayers will say some other choice would have been right, with no way of verifying so. For instance, we say that staying the course is throwing more money and troops in a futile strategy (as we did in Vietnam). Of course, if we leave, and the Middle East breaks out in regional war, then the naysayers will say that we should have stayed the course. (BBC reports 200,000 Turk soldiers on the northern Iraq border).

So, the Democrat strategy is to engage in symbolism, without substance.

My own sentiment is to pull out on a 6 month timetable.

Well let's hope this is not too little too late. I would not be surprised if they are planning a "nukular" attack on Los Angeles in order to fear monger us back into trusting them. Let's just hope that it means something.

Someone above said only 45% of the country is for impeachment. That is for Bush. I think the figures are reversed, 54%, for the impeachment of Cheney. But either way, I think those figures are a good starting point because once the evidence against either Bush or Cheney starts coming out, that is a good position from which the percentage will grow.

Censure maybe a temporary solution to desolving the chief in crime but does not solve the problem that..........HE already has expanded the Presidential powers through his 1100 presidential signing amendments. IMPEACHMENT is necessary to illegitimize all the amendments to expand the power of the executive branch. The BALANCE of power among the three Branches of Government is no longer equal. Our government is nearly operating as a dictatorship..........which means the RIGHTS of its citizens ARE already compromised.

The President and VP must be investigated for these CRIME against our citizens. The ABUSES against our nation, it's citizens and our rules of LAW is in itself a violation of the OATH these "public servants" promised when they began to take control of the office.

The moment they broke the LAW anything they did after that day is NO LONGER ligitimate. It is already publicly know that happened when the BUSH ADMINISTRATION led this nation into a WAR based on LIES. They became illegitimate and the degree of crime became more and more serious as they continued to hid the facts from the Congress and the Citizens they serve. They have become a WAR criminals when they violated the Geneva Convention, Herbas Corpus, illegally spying on American Citizens, conspiring to fire US Attorneys for political purposes and to install judges that they control to serve their agenda. They became a criminal when they tortured POW. They became criminals when they defied subpeonas called by the Congress. They became criminals when they squandered billions of taxpayers dollars to enriched Halliburton through a NO-Bid contract and failed to hold them unaccountable for the millions of dollars missing and the alleged overcharges billed to the US Government. They became a party to negligence when they hire inexperienced cronies and big-money contributors to high positions in order to infiltrate the government and take a unilateral control by those in the Executive Branch in essense expanding the control of departments that SHOULD be run independently for better internal control and a separation of duties and power AND most importantly to avoid a conflict of interest.

They have became a criminal when they secretly constructed one of the LARGEST US Government COMPLEX in IRAQ and lying to the AMERICAN that this government had NO intent in occupying IRAQ. They have become criminals when they knew that Hurricane Katrina weeks before that Hurricane Katrina was about to launch a devastation that would leave one of our most historic city (New Orleans) in our nation under water and resulting in thousands of deaths and destruction and leaving the citizens neglected for years aftermath. They have become criminals when they have left a hole in WTC and blamed it on Terrorist, when in fact they knew they have conspired to make this devastation happen so that they can wage a calculated attack on Afghanistan and IRAQ and linking the un-narrowed, undefined, unclarified WAR-ON-TERROR.....so that the executive branch can expand it power and to re-write the power of the commander in chief to expand his power at a time of "WAR" (this is exploitation). The fear game had help accomplished public support. They have become criminals when they conspired to expose Valerie Plame covert CIA identity.

But the most SERIOUS crimes committed is KNOWINGLY using our military might and placing our soldiers in harms way; which killed 3600 of our soliers and counting and wounded thousands more and the hundred of thousands of Afghans and IRAQUIS, for reasons other than for the interest of securing this NATION but for rather the interest of controlling OIL resources of another nation for the OIL industries. AND the war-profiteers and the profits from re-building of a nation after its destruction and lying to the WORLD that they did it to promote freedom and democracy to a NATION who has riches reserve in OIL. It was an act of piracy at lease and at BEST it is a fellonious crime against HUNDRED of thousands of INNOCENT PEOPLE and an INFRA-structure that these people built for themselves. It is the GRANDEST Crime perpetrated by these body of GOVERNMENT under the partnership of those GIANT-CORPORATE leadership and interest. Futhermore these unprecedent CRIMES committed by NOT the UNITED STATES but clearly by those in the WHITE HOUSE who had made these SERIOUS decision should BE held ACCOUNTABLE and REMOVED from OFFICE and most importantly illigitimize and REVERSE all that they have done to EXPAND the POWER of the PRESIDENT. IMPEACHMENT is the first STEP to curing the ill-advice and inappropriate actions of our government. We have to examine the damage and assess what changes they made that weakened our system of DEMOCRACY that served this country well over 200 years and reverse it immediately BEFORE the NEXT election and the NEXT PRESIDENT. NOT doing IMPEACHMENT will enable the expanded power of the office of the PRESIDENT to continue and it will BE difficult or become IMPOSSIBLE to reverse it. If it is possible, IT WILL NOT HAPPEN in the NEXT PRESIDENTIAL term. It may take a REVOLUTION from the people to reverse this change.

WE the PEOPLE can not realistically EXPECT the current Presidential Candidates to support IMPEACHMENT because the REWARD of EXPANDED POWER is GREAT for the next PRESIDENT. The CONGRESS or the SENATE can not be expected to ACT on their OWN to begin this process of IMPEACHMENT.

IT IS IMPERATIVE that THE PEOPLE do its CIVIL DUTY and their POWER to MAKE this CHANGE. Otherwise WE the PEOPLE will NO longer have OUR liberty to exercise our RIGHTS as AMERICANS because NOT doing our reponsibility is in essence..........GIVING UP your RIGHT to those POLITICIANS that is suppose to serve us and our interest. ABC News just made an announcement that a possible terrorist attack on U.S. soil maybe likely.

Note: I don't dispute that there maybe an attack on U.S. Soil. This tactic has been used before to employ FEAR in the psyche of the AMERICAN PUBLIC to justify a retributable attack on the attacker.

My question IS...............Since the 9/11 incident which was an attack launched by AL QUEDA/ Osam Bin Ladin........ (ALLEDGE and SPECULATED by those in the White House and the Pentagon and CIA which V.P Cheney had an unprecedented power over this agency that is suppose to be independent of the Executive Branch and marketed to the AMERICAN public by the main-stream media and funded by neo-con propagandaist).....the BUSH/ADMINISTRATION has made a CONFIDENT CLAIM that.......they have INSTALLED the most "EFFECTIVE and Competent" HOMELAND SECURITY in our NATION................and further laminated their claim which explain why WE (United States) have not been ATTACKED since 9/11.

IF......they were so EFFECTIVE and COMPETENT and POSITIVELY certain that these "TERRORIST" is in our soil to launch another ATTACK equal to or greater than the 9/11 incident, Then why don't they DECLASSIFY these intelligence and warn the possible CITIES in our nation that is a target so that the PEOPLE can be proactive in protecting themselves AND pro-active in participating on protecting their area?

Write to NPR and tell them that Cokie Roberts isn't listening to public calls for impeachment. Journalists are too concerned about the horse race and less concerned about protecting the Constitution!

Censure is fine. But if you are introducing the measure as an alternative to impeachment, you are seriously fucking up. Bush is committed to the idea of Police State America and he is a sociopath. Words, opposing ideas, talk, censure mean absolutely nothing to him. they will have no effect. He is like the serial murder who will never stop until a superior externally imposed power forces him to stop. I wish you guys would get your heads out of your butts and acknoklege that and then do your duties and remove him from office. Every day he stays in office accrues more harm to the nation.

You would think that torture, the politicization theocratization of government departments, illegal spying on citizens, secret prisons, rendition, ignoring the rule of law, manipulating intelligence, an illegal war, and manifest incompetence on almost every front, both domestic and foreign, might be enough.

I think he would have to actually perform "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.. Since he hasn't done that, nor any of the slander in your second paragraph, it's doubtful he'll be impeached.
