Tweety on the Word "Liberals"

Matthews talking to a crowd with Michael Moore today on Hardball:

Matthews: How many here consider yourselves and I mean this in a positive way, liberals?

Oh, you mean in a Satan like---treasonous way....now I get it.

Some etymology is in order:

LIBERty
LIBERal

I would like to know if Mr. Matthews considers LIBERty to be a negative concept.

Hillary just said during the CNN/YouTube debate that she prefers the term PROGRESSIVE because of the bad connotation with Liberal.

Re-branding works for the Republicans, why not try it for the Democrats for a change?

Matthews is such an ass, leave it to him to take Fox's version of the word liberal and allow it to become mainstream.. good job Chris you idiot schill!

Jesse's picture

Yeah, it's funny how liberal is a derogatory term now. I don't run away from it, I'm unabashedly liberal. Hillary, as Mister Anderson noted, is trying to "re-brand."

Forget that! Let's take it back! In fact, let's take Secular-Progressive back. Despite the fact that it's Bill O'Reilly's term, I actually identify with it a lot.

Secular-Progressive 'til the day I die!

Labels really don't mean sh*t, but I draw a distinction in my own mind between Liberals and Progressives. It's not for Mrs. Clinton to co-opt any old term she chooses in order to ingratiate herself with people on the left. If that works for her with the right, well, I suppose that's her night's sleep--not that many lefties support our candidates taking money from Rupert Murdoch.

The greater point is that she is willing to do/say/call herself anything in order to get elected--as posters here have noticed and mentioned any number of times. The evidence is substantial.

And she's no Progressive. Ask Howard Dean.

Liberals ended segregation. Liberals passed the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act. Liberals created Medicare. Liberals passed the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act. What did Conservatives do? They opposed them on every one of those things...every one! So when you try to hurl that label at my feet, 'Liberal,' as if it were something to be ashamed of, something dirty, something to run away from, it won't work, Senator, because I will pick up that label and I will wear it as a badge of honor." -- Matt Santos, "The West Wing"

This isn't entirely the fault of Tweety. Unfortunately, the rights to the word "liberal™" was bought by the Republican party to redefine to anything they want back in the late 80s. Just like they bought the rights to the words "freedom™" and "terrorist™" in the past several years.

Oh yeah, and you probably have to pay the GOP royalties everytime you use those words. :(

There are maybe two million liberals in all of the continental US.
Fewer even progressives.
The culture of violence, greed and narcissism has all but destroyed what used to be America.
The fact that Mathews still has a job after uttering those words speaks volumes about the character and values of those who sign his checks.
Maybe Crooks and Liars can organize a boycott of MS-NBC.
I doubt it though, most true progressives push publicly funded elections. A topic I've never seen this site push.
Most foreigners I've encountered recently don't believe Americans want to change. They just want to make money off it.

The Rovians have redefined many words to suit their agenda. That's why I get pissed when I hear a liberal call him or herself a progressive.

I e-mail executive producers when talking heads insist that it's the Democrat Party. I refer them to the Democratic Party website.

If I hear it in person, I usually respond with the question, "Are you a Republic?" Most of the dittoheads don't get it. LOL

Its funny how they label someone a "Liberal" when in reality they are the ones that actually fit the definition that they are trying to put on that other person. What I mean is, I work with and know many people that are and have been labeled a "Liberal" by people just like Mathews. Yet, these same people (and I am one) who are constantly labeled a "Liberal" are the same ones who are nurses, cops, soldiers, firefighters, etc. We are the ones that are on the front lines and deal with the worst of worst everyday. We are also the same ones that when things go bad people like Mathews turn to us to fix it. To me, the term "Liberal" is a compliment.

Radically Moderate's picture

Moore should have asked Tweety first to define what a liberal is, and who exactly fits the general category of "liberal"

For sure. What that show did so brilliantly was to demonstrate that liberals are not the devil, that they're not just out for your money, that they're truly interested in helping the common man. Or so I'd like to think. That was the only show I've ever seen that made me really say, "Yeah! Go America!"

Nyc Alberts's picture

What I found telling, and I mean this in the *nicest* way, was how even the split was, in that nobody on Tweety's side cheered their position as a wibewal.

I'll revisit this after you post the clip, but what's the deal with the little Miss Eva Brann over Tweety's shoulder during the whole interview?

And more to the point, why does such a pretty girl like that look so....

Angry?

Explain that to me.

...at least Liberals won't send our fledgling enterprise called democracy spiraling down into the fires of hell with out of control paranoia, spin and spilling the blood of innocents to pay for a sick enterprise(Iraq war) and not knowing when to step aside, resign for the good of the country. all they ever wanted for ALL Americans was Life, Liberty , the pursuit of happiness(not at the expense of the poor) and justice!!!

seriously? what is it, a slow news day? Half the country considers liberal to be a slur. CM saying 'liberal in a positive way' is not a sign that hes biased its a sign that the political discourse in this country has devolved into name calling; something that us liberals are as guilty of as the republicans. You guys might want to take off the tinfoil hat every once in a while and let your brain breath a little...

Oh please, all the f**king handwringing over this.

Everyone on this board knows exactly what Matthews was saying (or trying to say), and he's dead on right.
Everyone here knows that the term "Liberal" has been used in the pejorative sense since ... well .... 1972.
I'm a Liberal, and I don't run and hide from the word when it's used to describe me.
Liberals - that is, SOME Liberals - need to stop being weenies about this. If you don't mind being a Liberal, then stop wimping out whining and complaining that Republicans are calling you a Liberal.

His mouth runs and runs and he says NOTHING. His program has no value--only in his mind.

I can't stand Gingrich but today he was interviewed and he said (I paraphrase) the republican field were like pygmies and Matthews was a washed up hack.

Turn him off--no numbers, no sponsors and he will go away.

Obviously, I didn't see him with Michael Moore, but let me guess--Matthews even found some obscure way of working Hillary Clinton into his diatribe about a dozen times, right?

LaFajita's picture

I kinda stumbled over the taping of this show while I was walking back from the Impeachment protest at the Rayburn building.
Michael Moore was getting into his car, and I went over and shook his hand and informed him that I had seen his film last weekend and that he would be getting my ticket stub. I did all this while wearing my "I'm Cindy" T-shirt. Sometimes it is good to be Cindy Sheehan.
Earlier in the day I got a big hug from Cindy Sheehan (while wearing my "I'm Cindy" T-shirt) because it isn't every day that she gets to meet herself. Sometimes it is really, really good to be Cindy Sheehan.
Later in the day, I found I had some bail money burning a hole in my pocket (because sometimes it really sux to be Cindy Sheehan) so I went over to the Code Pink House (aka Barbie's Protest Set) and posted my bail there with Medea Benjamin while wearing my "I'm Cindy" T-shirt. In return they plied me with food and drink, because sometimes it is advantageous to be Cindy Sheehan. They also cadged a ride across town for one of their members, because sometimes it is nice to be nice to the people who are nice to Cindy Sheehan.
Gee. Cindy Sheehan, Michael Moore, and Medea and the Code Pink Ladies, all in one day. My life is complete. I can die now (plop!)

How many here consider yourselves and I mean this in a positive way, conservatives? I know when most of America hears the word conservative we think of pedophiles, liars, hypocrites, and so on. We know Bush is responsible for the deaths on 600,000 innocent people but the word gets its reputation not just from Bush- but from the hypocrites that share the right wing name. When I hear the word conservative, I think of Joe McCarthy, Bill O' Riley, and Ann Coulter and the rest of this hate filled party.

Here is what dictionary.com says "liberal" means. To be a liberal means you are in favor of individual freedom and social progress. To be a conservative means you are against those principals. Which group has more to be proud of?

Liberal is a good thing. Always has been always will be. Unless you're a conservo-droid. Then it's scary and bad. Gotta hate those folks who think for themselves. They're so hard to control. Can't scare them with jebus or threats aimed at their personal freedoms or lifestyle. What's a reich winger to do?

Hey, I'm a liberal and if there's one thing I've observed it's how the name liberal has been thrown into disrepute. Haven't you noiticed how often these days we refer to ourselves as "progressives?"

Look, folks like Rush Limbaugh have literally made a career out of demonizing us. The thing is, they've finally gone so far of the deep end that things have backfired and are unintentionaly endorsing the brand name.

Hillary's right, its because the big government leftists hijacked the word and its come to mean something different than it use to. It use to be about freedom and individual rights, not political correctness, socialism, pacifism, etc...

I always make a point to stress that I call myself a liberal because I support the Enlightenment philosophy at the heart of our founding father's inspiration for the constitution. A proud tradition of achievement and a position that is patriotic as all hell.

I hate the word "progressive". It's nonsense. We're always "progressing" toward something. Fascism mostly of late.
