MSNBC just reported that Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) announced he will be introducing a bill tomorrow that would require the House Judiciary Committee to begin an impeachment investigation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. At the beginning of the report MSNBC's Chris Jansing says this bill was being presented by a group of House Democrats, but Inslee is the only one mentioned. More details to come...

"Investigate"?!?!?!?!

What's to investigate, just file the impeachment charges already, the sooner this clod Gonzales is bounced out of DC, the better off for all right-thinking people

Have they enough votes?

Bring Me the Head of Alberto Gonzales!

Jay is my rep in congress, though i will never vote for him. it is nice to see that he still has a pair but they need to aim higher. Darth Richard needs to be the 1st impeached then it should be W's turn.

once again Jay aims for the midrange prize

"if passed"

these are not articles of impeachment, don't get too excited.

Hip-Hip Hoof*ckin'ray!!!!

Sweet! At least they are talking about it. It's finally a first step and I'm pretty sure everyone except the usual ass kissers will be for it. Impeached, gonzo might do some fast talking and maybe even the truth.

This the first step in tearing down the stonewall.....impeaching the AG that is responsible in creating a mock justice department that expanded the presidential power and that made the president believed he was above the LAW.

The next in the line of impeachment should be President Bush to expose his incompetence as a president and to expose the actual man that's been running this nation to the Ground.....Rove and Cheney. Impeachment would ineffect the President to continue the deathly decisions adviced to him by ROVE and Cheney. If the timing is just right, it will tie-up the President in the impeachment hearing and place him in a "lame duck presidency". Once the substantial story is exposed, then Cheney and Rove and all those accomplice to the wrongdoing will be easily convicted. If time properly, the Speaker of the House can be the "acting president" for a short period of time, until the NEW "voted" president is in place.

The Criminal investigation must continue until justice is served. Investigation must not stop even when a new administration is put in place. It is only then that JUSTICE will be served and a restored confidence will begin to show among the AMERICAN PUBLIC.

CNN and MSNBC online have not reported this story yet.

Is this the Chief Justice thread or the Atorney general thread?

I'm lost, somebody deleted my breadcrumbs.

Rep. Inslee is my representative. I just emailed him last week asking him to vote yes if/when impeachment of Gonzo comes to the table. I've never been so proud of my representative. Contact your members of congress. Remind them who they work for.

And here I thought they were introducing an introduction to form a committee to look into forming a committee the consider investigating Gonzo's impeachment.

It's about fucking time! Now, do the Democrats have the balls to see this through, or will Reid fold (again) when the Repugs stonewall in the Senate?

Now we know why Judge Johnny fell off his chair.

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) will be attending YearlyKos.

Wolf just asked one of the Repub hacks (Duncan Hunter) who is running for president what he thought about gonzo. He said he hadn't been paying attention to the hearings so he couldn't say what he thought. Then Hunter made a few anti dems remarks and went off on the topic of we need to intercept more terrorists communications lines and the typical bs.

Any person running for prez who hasn't been paying attention to those hearings should be barred from running.

SWEET!

Rep. Conyers Discusses Impeachment
Submitted by davidswanson on Mon, 2007-07-30 19:42. Impeachment
By David Swanson

On July 20th, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers discussed the prospects for impeachment at greater length than has previously been widely reported. What has previously been known is that Congressman Conyers gave a speech in San Diego at which he said:

"We need to have three Members of Congress from anywhere come and say, 'Congressman, if you... if you are willing to support an inquiry into a resolution of whether there had been acts of impeachability conducted by, the Vice President of, and the President of the United States, that could lead to High Crimes and Misdemeanors, then we will join you if you introduce such a resolution.'"

The transcript and video of these remarks are posted online: http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/25051

It has also been widely reported that three days later in Washington, D.C., Conyers told a group of citizens that he did not intend to pursue impeachment. About 47 of us were arrested that day in his office.

Now an interview has surfaced that Conyers gave on the evening of the 20th discussing impeachment at somewhat greater length. The audio and transcript are posted online: http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/25254

In this audio, Conyers asserts that Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. has introduced articles of impeachment against President Bush. This appears to be false, as there has been no such bill entered into the Congressional Record, and Congressman Jackson's office has not announced it. Jackson did release a statement in support of impeaching Bush and Cheney, and he has failed thus far to sign onto H Res 333, articles of impeachment against Cheney. Jackson and Congressman Maurice Hinchey are the two Members of Congress who have recently advocated for impeachment without introducing or signing onto any articles. Whether Conyers' comment is based on conversations with Jackson in which he suggested that he would introduce a bill I do not know.

When pressed on the question of what he, John Conyers, intends to do on impeachment, the Congressman hinted that he would act, but did not commit to anything:

"Well, everybody’s entitled to their opinion. There are 435 members of Congress. Nancy Pelosi is entitled to hers, you know, because – she’s more than entitled to hers – she’s the Speaker, the first woman Speaker. But then I’m entitled to mine. So every member can do what they want. I don’t check with Nancy Pelosi to do what I feel I need to do when I introduce consideration of impeachment."

why not help the ID10Ts in WashDC understand it needs to be done? I've written my congressman and both senators.

What is wrong with this country? After all this time, it is breaking news that the Congress will finally begin to "investigate?"

All right! Go Democrats! I wrote Representative Inslee this thank you note:

Thank you for starting an impeachment investigation of Alberto Gonzales. I am not a cynic, but a number of my friends are, and I'm very happy to point to this as a start towards the restoration of our constitution and the rule of law.

AMEN!!!

I've spent the last month wondering what in the hell the Dems were waiting for. Republicans go on TV and claim that criticism of the AG is politically motivated and the best response they'd been able to give was "where there's smoke, there could be fire"?? We're *looking at the fire* and there hasn't even been an investigation (and subsequent Presidential pardon) yet.

How hard could it be to identify the political motivation where it should be the most obvious? If you're a Republican, you either believe Alberto Gonzales in spite of his disastrous testimony/performance, therefore supporting him, or; you look at the ridiculous level of contradiction (with his own sworn testimony AND that of others) and you conclude that he is of course lying.
Obviously if there is any political motivation it's on the part of those Republicans who know the AG is lying, yet do not support oversight/investigation.

My God.

it's about fuckin' time!!! now can we get someone to start the process for Bush and Cheney?!?

OK! Now, hopefully the R's will put nation above party. AGAG has zero credibility left. Now we need to continue to push for not only AGAG, but for the two delusional whoppers at the top. Impeachment is the cure, baby! Keep writing your representatives!

YAY!!! I AM SO PROUD TO LIVE IN WASHINGTON STATE!

Gonzo the Bozo. At best he's an incompetent lying buffoon....and he's not even good at it. He should be dragged out of there in handcuffs and made someone's girlfriend.

It is time for the Republican Party to pressure President Bush to replace Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. This man has clearly been disingenuous with the country. It completely baffles me that our President is still hanging on to him.

Share your opinions and thoughts. Does the congress any have special powers to force him out? Let us know if Gonzales is an honest man? http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=227

Make your voice heard. You can vote on polls on the topic of importance to you, and if it's not there, you can sign up and create a poll in less than a minute (literally).

...and prosecute and imprison Gonzo as well.

Ruthless People @ 61:

The Dems can introduce all the bills they want but if The Decider says Heckuva Job Gonzo stays, he stays.

Wrong answer! If Conyer's accepts the motion, the Judiciary Committee acts as a Grand Jury to decide if it warrants impeachment.

If they determine there is sufficient evidence of a crime, it then becomes a congressional investigation of a criminal act and all claims of Executive Privilege fall and all documents and subpoenas must be obeyed. United States vs. Nixon decided this at the SCOTUS level.

Then they can recommend impeachment to the House who has an up and down simple majority vote on the motion with no debate and it moves on to the Senate for a trial. They can also refer it to the US Attorney in DC and request criminal prosecution. That would be impossible to ignore, the Senate must have the trial and the US Attorney must prosecute.

Three hours later and CNN and Yahoo news still don't have this up on the screen, preferring ledes of somebody involved in dog fighting and Condi Rice 's contribution to peace of a $20 or 30B worth of arms to Saudi Arabia (of Sept 11 fame) and possibly Egypt. Oh, and a little something thrown in for the destitute Israelis. Arms for peace! Hurrah! Good thing Paris didn't wreck a car last nite.

Jay is my representative!

I just wrote him a thank you letter and told him I hoped this was just practice for the next two vitally important impeachments.

Riiiggght.. I'll believe Alberto is being held accountable for his actions when I see the cuffs on his wrists... And not a minute before... All these hearings and all the sad sack photos of him looking all perplexed and put upon, and all the 'I'm involking executive priviledge, or I can't speak to that blah blah' type comments by Herr Gonzales is fine and dandy theater.. But, doesn't amount to spit, if he walks away from it all scott free in the end... Smirking all the way to his next cushy undeserved job probably with a salery paid by us AGAIN...IF there is any justice left in this land, this little fuckers going to end up doing real time over all these lies, dissemblings and obsfications. His actions and decrees have perverted the United States Justice Department rendering it suspect at best and incoherent and unworkable at worst.. That seems like a pretty serious crime to me.......But what do I know, I ain't no lawyer.....JD

Make it happen, Dems. MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

The Champ is out.

Send him to Guantanamo, or however you spell it.

Impeachment of Gonzales will be the first step in voicing strong disapproval for the Bush administration from our Congress and the American people. It is no surprise to anyone that our president and his administration have, yet again, hid the truth from the American public. Similar to the dealings with the war in Iraq, this administration has been feeding lies to the public. Now the war has proven to be a failure and is causing more violence, terror and poverty in this world. According to the Borgen Project, it only takes $19 billion dollars annually to eradicate world hunger and poverty. However, our government has already spent more than $450 billion dollars over this fruitless war in Iraq. It is time for the Bush Administration to take a real interest in the lives of the American people as well as people who are in desperate needs around the world. Stop the lies and stop poverty now.

IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY! WHO CARES ABOUT GONZO!

"shading the truth"...uh no. I call it lying as most people do. It's really not that hard to tell the truth is it?

This makes me feel better about being gay. Now I know it is all Republicans fault.

About time SOMEBODY starts something.

Shouldn't we be calling on Harry Reid to keep the Senate running with a skeleton crew this August, rather than recessing? Otherwise, expect Bush to replace Gonzales or other officials with recess appointments without the required Senate input. Rather than fuming about Bush after the fact, which we have done for 6 years, why not check him before the fact?

"Rather than fuming about Bush after the fact, which we have done for 6 years, why not check him before the fact?"

I don't know, maybe because it's all smoke and mirrors BS. Like the Dems care one way or another. All they want is their turn on the taxpayer's tit.

I think we're all looking forward to another Clinton Administration, aren't we?

All impeachment, all the time!

This should reveal once and for all whether or not we are living under a dictatorship. I believe we are, therefore nothing will happen to the criminal Gonzales. The People have become to complacent and cowardly to do anything about it.

Lots of if, ands, buts and hurdles....add to that you are betting on the Democrats to have the gonads to see it through which they have proven time and time again they don't have the gonads.

And IF all these hurdles are cleared, and IF the Democrats grow a pair The Decider can bring out the nuclear option: Raise the terror alerts and suspend the constitution.

PNAAC Minister @ 1:

'Bout Fristing Time!!!

I am so glad the Democrats did this BEFORE any of the Republicans did it. Dang they take a long time. This will boost their approval ranking if they really do impeach that liar.

Trying to impeach Gonzales on what he may or may not have said, clarified or did not clarify is just a waste of time. No person has been able to present any dishonesty or wrong doing. An interesting statistic would be looking at how much time has been spent on holding oversight hearings or passing legislation that had no chance of becoming law.

A nice alternative to this bad behavior from both sides of the aisle would be working together on one of the major issues that face our nation, border security, social security, health care (shortage and costs) and possibly a nonpartisan look at Iraq.

[...] Crooks and Liars » BREAKING: House Democrats Introducing Bill To Investigate Impeachment Of Alberto... [...]

Exactly right, I was surprised this move, or a similar recess appointment, didn't take place when the politicos took their July 4th break

The Dems-if they have the spine to do so-can always play the open/close wallet card by telling W that the price for his continued arrogance regarding Executive Privilege claims, with both the Attorney General and in all other claims of such, is that there will be NO further funding of either the Attorney General and his immediate staff, or for the Executive Branch and all those working out of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave

Keep the full funding for all the Depts, Agencies & Bureaus-except for the AG and his staff-just zero it out for anyone working directly for W & Cheney

It's exactly the kind of slapping W deserves for being such a spectacularly corrupt, arrogant, ideological and incompetent President

Gonzales will resign by next friday nite....if for no other reason to stifle any investigations.

see my above post

Now we'll find out if Pelosi is serous about taking impeachment off the table; where there is or isn't time; whether the DNC will or will not enforce teh law outside impeachment; or whether there really are more important issues and legislation other than impeachment.

If they succeed in getting gonzo out of the way all kinds of other legal moves can be made. This is where I get goosily ignorant about other legal proceedings that I heard can start happening against the two remaining shitheads.

Couple things causing severe doubt:
1) Won't the repugs dig in their heels like ALWAYS and prevent the impeachment knowing full well what a lying scumbag and embarrassment he is.
2) Don't we also expect, even with the remote chance he's offed, Ted Bundy's twinner in the WH installs someone exhuding the same stench as gonzo?

Therefore, the happy thought of an impeachment didn't change my resperation not one tiny bit.

I know, it's respiration (sp)

Heard they're meeting every 10 days in august.

introducing a bill to investigate impeachment... *vomit*

Now maybe this will build some "Impeachment muscle" so they can get to Bush and Cheney but I doubt that.

There's a deal, one chance at the deal, it's offered to everybody in a criminal investigation.
Gonzo was a prosecutor, he made this deal many times, right? Only then he was on the other side of the interrogation.

The first one to rat out his accomplices is the one who doesn't get the chair...

Figuratively speaking of course, although...

... Bush IS guilty of more than 4,000 counts of murder of American Military personnel, and literally countless Iraqi civilians.

The only ONLY way Bush can suspend the constitution and the Congress is if he had a majority support within the same Armed Forces he has spent the last 6 years raping.

Guess what? He ain't got that kind of support...

The Congress will have to forgo their August vacation, DC gets "sultry" in summertime, and the Capitol was built about a hundred and forty years before central air conditioning was invented.

Perfect weather for a little indoor "grilling" you know.

He already addressed that LAST MARCH. He will have a junior Senator open the Senate every ten days, as noted above.

But, the ten day limit on recess appt's is a tradition, and guess who doesn't follow tradition?

We'll have to wait and see.

They need the Tri-fecta impeachment proceedings with Cheney, Bush and then Gonzo.

This Gonzo sideshow is just that... a side show ...to make people think something is happening. Even if this goes anywhere it won't go anywhere because Bush will pull a Scooter Libby out of is colon powell.

I glad that some of you are actually contacting your representative to demand they go after impeachment of Cheney and Bush. MORE people have to do it!

Someone with exposure needs to form a "General Strike" type day where everyone demands impeachment. Like the "Million Man March" years ago...or what the Latino community did recently.

Us typing comments here just won't do it. I would love to see C&L be the driving force to start that up.

I really hope our democratic leaders follow through on getting this bastard out of our government.

He is just disgraceful and really needs to be removed from that office. I would not give him the time of day, let alone a chance to change all the lie's he has told.

I just dont recall any average Americans, that are given a chance to change lie's they have told before a grand jury.

This shit just continues to piss people off.
