BREAKING: Sen. Stevens' home raided

The IRS and the FBI have exercised a search warrant on the home of Senator Ted Stevens in Girdwood.
"All I can say is that agents from the FBI and IRS are currently conducting a search at that residence," said Dave Heller, the assistant special agent in charge of the FBI's Anchorage office. The search began this afternoon, he said. It's the only such search warrant currently being served, he said.
He directed other questions to the U.S. Justice Department's Public Integrity Section in Washington. A spokesman there had no comment.
Federal investigators and a grand jury looking into public corruption in Alaska have been asking questions about a 2000 remodeling project at Stevens' home, particularly the involvement of the oil field services firm Veco.

Stevens has the incriminatin' records on his PC, though. Literally on his PC, in a shoebox.
This remodeling job of Stevens' house took place in 2000. The FBI, after seven years, is finally investigating Stevens' role in this matter. Perhaps the fact that the Republicans had control of the House had something to do with them looking out [or overlooking] one of their own. Now if only Gonzalez's and Bush's and Cheney's criminal past will be investigated, albeit a lot more quicker than is the case with Ted Stevens.

There has to be a higher standard for our public officials with regard to criminal behavior, especially when that criminal behavior is aided by their official position. Politicians and police (just to name two examples) should receive double the normal sentence or an extra ten years for their crimes, whichever is greater (and they get to go to big boy prison, not club Fed). Maybe you can't always get the best and the most honest to serve, but you can at least put some real fear into them so they stay honest in spite of their true nature.

The Republican Congressman from Alaska is also under investigation, and it looks like the other Republican Senator from Alaska, Lisa Murkowski is also in trouble for having purchased her home, far below market value, from a contractor. She recently announced that she was getting rid of the house. FBI, get there before she empties the place out.

According to Wikipedia, Stevens has been Alaska's Senator since 1968. That is at least twenty years too long for any politician to be in office. They just aren't clued in to the current state of affairs when they've been there that long. Politicians should have both term limits and mandatory retirement at 65.

Hypocrisy Defined
Today the dictionary made advances in its ability to define "Hypocrite." From here on, the book of definition should use Ted Stevens as the ultimate example of someone who talks out of both sides of his mouth with claims to be a straight shooter who also gave the word "NO" a better meaning.
Stevens must of stood out like a beacon with an arrow pointing at him. He is the Senator who lead the efforts to drill in Alaska. He is the Senator who always, during Senate hearing, made it a point to rebuild the oil executives testimony after the Democrats created openings. It was obvious and this investigation speaks to the love affair Stevens had with oil giants.
I think of William Jefferson and the $100,000 in "cold" cash they found in his freezer. The outrage was massive and national. The right needed a poster boy, and that boy's name was Jefferson. However, if they wanted a better example, they only need look within their own Party. The money representing this crime amounts to billions or enough to buy a refrigerator factory. That would bring "cold" cash to a new level.

The questionaire for potential jurists asks about convictions of felonies, Bush couldn't answer the question truthfully because signing the document is under penalty of perjury... since Bush was running for Governor... or prehaps it was his unsuccessful run at Congress just prior to that.. After the money , as ear-marked in the Omnibus Spendin' Bill, was dropped from that piece of legislation, Congress appropriated the same amount that had been ear-marked earlier, but just fer "general" road improvement. So the Alaskan government spent it on the two bridges.
