Iraq Parliament Goes On Summer Break
Iraq's parliament adjourned for its summer recess on Monday, taking a break until September despite having failed to enact a series of laws demanded by Washington.
Parliamentary speaker Mahmoud Mashhadani said in a statement issued after Monday's session that he had dismissed lawmakers until Sept. 4.
"Parliament has decided to break until early September," Hussein Falluji of the mainly Sunni Accordance Front bloc in parliament told Reuters. "We have already cut the holiday by one month. It is our constitutional right to take it."
The recess means parliament will resume just before U.S. military commander General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker are due to report back to Congress on the success of this year's "surge" in U.S. troops to Iraq.

Can't we allow our troops a summer break as well? I mean, after all, most are just barely out of school themselves.
Our guys are going on break soon too, just in time for a Tonkin Event, or somethin'....

Does it OK the end of war in Iraq? Can we go home now? Can we?
Parliament's out for summer!
Parliament's out forever!
Now they can stay up and watch Conan without their parents bitchin' about it.
...despite having failed to enact a series of laws demanded by Washington.
Oh, yeah: Frist!
"Shi'ites will be Shi'ites.
Bad Shi'tes.
Bad Shi'ites."
As I always say, Nouri Maliki closed parliament cause they were gonna pass a resolution asking us to leave.
Am I the only one that senses an excuse to extend the stay of our troops, blaming a lack of progress on the Iraqi government's break? The s--- hit the Iraqi fan a long time ago, and our troops are stuck there with it landing all over themselves. The instability in Iraq is due to ideological differences that are thousands of years old. Get our troops out of there, and let them fight their own civil war.
CONGRESS, CUT THEIR DAMN PAY!
Whom has the money has the power. Just as long as they have the balls enough to use it.
Just emulating the example of the decidificationalizer's democracy. Holidays must take priority over looking after people. Call them when you have a brain-dead lady to save from unplugging.
I think that a summer vacation for US forces is a good idea, too.
Too bad Bush, Co. Is still trying to bring about the apocalypse, or we could call this thing done and move all our gear to Darfur.
How about the Iraqi people? Do they get a break?
No, they get death.
Democracy in Action.
I've asked Senator Reid and Representative Pelosi to either skip or shorten their August recess. Probably whistling into the wind...
More guns more bombs, peace thru superior firepower!!
Georgette Orwell @ 15:
Didn't bother with the republicans, huh.....
They don't want to pass the oil giveaway plan written up by the oil companies. They hope we will just go away while they are on vacation.
They are pissed off it is not 3 month long break.
Bet ya they don't vacation in Iraq.
Think they will vacation in Iraq?
Andy K @ 5:
...Hey I like Parliament.....Rumpofsteelskin,Mothership Connection.....get up with the down stroke ...everybody get up.
Vegas baby
So, with government in Iraq on vacation, and, government in the U.S. on vacation, does the war stop now?
nick @ 23:
Think of all the beautiful babies...al Maliki, you are sooo money!
nick @ 23:
Oh hell no. They'll be on the beach in Mombassa, the Seychells and the Maldives. Who the hell wants Vegas? Its just High Cost and worn out nookie.
Looks like they're taking after G.W. Bush. What a fine country that is gonna be!
Pelosi ought to offer the Iraqis free vacation packages in Kennebunkport Maine.
We are so mad about the newly Iraqi government taking August month out. When ours great leaders are doing the same thing! We have air in the senate, congress or WH but in 150 degrees? Could you work but with 1 hours of electricity per days!!!!!!
This is another put the blame on the victims. The democrats have come out with this newfound we get out but not now while the Crazy Republicans are out of control with war!!!!!
I was so happy that Steven from Alaska his finally getting what he deserved.
The recess means parliament will resume just before ... Petraeus and ... Crocker are due to report back to Congress on the success of this year’s “surge” in U.S. troops to Iraq.
Al Capone arranged to be in Miami for St.Valentines day. Or they could just be trying to wash their hands of the matter. Can't see Petreus doing anything but cozy up to tribal leaders even more.
mudshark @ 22:
I lean towards Funkadelic, myself. Eddie fuckin' Hazel, my man!
well i'll be damned. political progress just went on vacation until just before we get our report card from the general. we know our military is doing their job, and everyone agrees that the political progress is necessary for out withdrawing troops. and no decision will be made until the september report. so wjy wait any longer. there will obviously be no political progress so statrt bring them home now. a month off while our troops die to set up their vacationing government. this makes me sick.
I don't need any help from Congress anyway. I can handle this situation all by myself.
OT-Breaking-Cheif Justice Robberts had an "Benign idio-magnetic Seizer". This a sudden burst of elctromagnatism in the head.
He had a mental picture of Bush??
George Bush will be meeting with the memebers of the Iraqi parliament on some beach in mid August. Bush will do anything to get the oil bill through. We all know the oil bill that will make the oil companies really happy. If the state of the union were not so sad and deadly, we could use it to develop government studies models on how to wreck a country. I just wish that this were a nightmare and I could wake up and find sanity back in the world.
Is Rosie's cruise filled yet?
"we'll stand down when they stand up"
....wait...what?
It's kinda like going over to someone's house to help them move and they leave to go see a movie.
seevee @ 38:
LOL
abarts @ 37:
...Yeah...I'd like to see Boosh spin this.He will but it won't matter anymore.....
drip...drip...drip...
Bush wants this war RAGIN' till the day he "stands down" from the presidency... and FOR THE REST OF HIS CURSED LIFE he will proclaim that he fought the war on terror to the end of his term.
The Republicans will help him do it... and the next President will be left holding the bag (of body parts, caskets, dead civilians, and worn out military equipment) in Iraq.
That's the BEST POSSIBLE SCENARIO... until KKKarl Rove figures out how to put the next election on hold so that THE SHOOTER CAN TAKE OVER OFFICIALLY.
But, but, but,but,but,but,but,but,but, it's hot!
Cowboy Bob in Austin @ 41:
Yep...you got that right. And taxes will have to raised to pay for this imbiciles fuck up and the dems will get the blame for raising those taxes
I'd love to take a vacation from the heat and humidity of New Orleans in July. Anyone have a house to sit in the northwest? Baghdad may have the heat, but I doubt it has the humdity.
Humidity not humdity, although I can hum a mean ditty.
You know where they're going? Dohuk, baby! Those kurds can parte' like its 1999. The drive back to Baghdad is going to be a b-i-itch.
please put up a post on michael o'hanlon's stupid piece about how well things are going in iraq. I looked at his bio -this guy has less than 2 yrs of real world work experience! he spends 8 days in the green zone and now he's on tv as an iraqi expert telling us how well things are going.
someone needs to stop funding the think-less tanks (brookings, AEI, etc, etc)
Yep, It would seem that Bush is now a world-class lame duck.
Are you ready for the summer?!
Are you ready for the good times?!
Are you ready for the apple trees, the birds and bees, and a whole lotta foolin' around?!
Are you ready for the summer?!
Are you ready for the hot nights?!
Are you ready for the water slides, the butterflies, and a whole lotta foolin' around?!
Can you blame them (you will....). They are just not invested in Bush's Fantasy. They know the oil law is a codifying of the rip off of the country's main resource.
I'd be out camel racing too if I were one of them. They didn't ask us to invade; they deserve their vacation. They should take 3 months.
"I love Bananarama"-Maliki
The oil giveaway plan is the big stumbling block. The tight wad bribes they are being offered are not nearly enough to counter the wrath they will feel from their people by giving away their oil to American and British oil friends for the next 30-50 years. I am kind of shocked to be honest its not a done deal but at least Halliburton retains sole control of all the oil in the meantime. Buy HAL for another month.
Iraq’s parliament adjourned for its summer recess on Monday, taking a break until September despite having failed to enact a series of laws demanded by Washington.
What's Washington going to do - invade them?
They're learning from Bush. He takes the whole month of August off too.
I say let the US forces in Iraq come home for the month of August as well. If there is anthing left by September, they can go back and...
wait...
Uh, what were they doing over there? Uh... never mind, bring them home now.
The United States Congress will adjourn for its summer recess on Monday, taking a break until September despite having failed to enact a series of laws demanded by 3/4 of Americans.
House speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement issued after Monday’s session that she had dismissed lawmakers until September, despite pressing issues of Constitutional crisis.
“Congress has decided to break until early September,” Pelosi of the mainly ineffectual Democratic bloc in Congress told Reuters. “We have already cut the holiday by one week. It is our constitutional right to take it.”
The recess means Congress will resume just before U.S. military commander General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker are due to report back to Congress on the success of this year’s “surge” in U.S. troops to Iraq. A series of stunning recess appointments are expected, where the Administration will fill any and all open positions with recess appointments that would never be confirmed otherwise.
Can we leave now, please?
How will we notice the difference? Other than the bevy of flights out of the country.
Don't forget the kids!
Oh yeah, they're dead.
I met a young Navy MD in training who spent two tours (in Fallujah and Al Anbar). He said that they are now assigning the Navy MD's to ARMY units (as opposed to Marines) because of a shortage.
Considering that a good many of the "laws demanded by Washington" are distinctly anti-Iraqi I can't say as I really blame them!
NMvoiceofreason @ 56:
Exactly!!!
Give the Iraqi congressmen some credit folks, they need the time to prepare for their vacation in Dubai, the Bahamas and Switzerland.
Shorter Iraqi government: "We're going on vacation. You guys just fight amongst yourselves until we get back". I wonder how many of our troops know about this. This is what they're dying for - a phony, bullshit, illegitimate puppet government being propped up by US tax dollars and think tank propaganda. Nothing would please me more than to see all of our troops mutiny en masse. I'd love for them to say to the Generals and their puppet masters in Washington: Fuck this shit! We're done being targets! Now get us the fuck out, now!
Pelosi of the mainly ineffectual Democratic bloc in Congress told Reuters. “We have already cut the holiday by one week. It is our constitutional right to take it.”
Let that be the Democrats' epitaph.
gene214 @ 63:
Don't many of them read the Army Times?
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/07/ap_iraqparliament_070730w/
mudshark @ 40:
Yes, folks, the Iraqis have stood up and...they're headin' for the door. Next stop - London, Paris, Switzerland - anywhere but this shithole. The silly Americans can mind the store until they come back (IF they come back)
demodocos @ 65:
The way the Pentagon's running the show, I wouldn't doubt for a minute that the troops are forbidden to read the Army Times.
Hopefully as they sail away on their yahts, they are giving Bush the finger.
Damn! And we all know how badly Bushco wanted a bill granting US oil companies soveriegnty over Iraq's oil resources. Oh, well...
They had to do this, they recently passed a 'truth in advertising' law so in order to represent what they're really doing they had to go home.
"The United States Congress will adjourn for its summer recess on Monday, taking a break until September despite having failed to enact a series of laws demanded by 3/4 of Americans."
NMvoiceofreason:
you fail to mention exactly why laws demanded by 3/4 of americans were not enacted. the reason that no one ever mentions is the senate republicans and their blocking, over 40 times, the progress of said legislation. to blame the dems of this short coming is far from the whole story.
Hey, these powerful Iraqi politicians had to take time off. Their servants aren't going to whip themselves.
120 to 130 degrees?
I'm surprised that members of parliament haven't decamped to Switzerland.
