The Evil Empire Grows

h/t MLN for vid

MediaMatters: "Rupert Murdoch's purchase of Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal represents a sad day for American journalism. For decades, the Journal's news pages have often symbolized the rewards of serious reporting -- with this purchase, I'm afraid those days may be over.

"Murdoch has a long and sordid history of discarding the accepted norms of honest journalism in order to advance his own political and corporate agenda.

"Of particular concern is Murdoch's plan to use the Journal to help launch the Fox Business Network, which will be overseen by Fox News boss and former Republican strategist Roger Ailes."

And more: It's Roger Ailes and Neil Cavuto the WSJ should fear

UPDATE: Dem FCC Commissioner Wants FCC To Review NewsCorp/Dow Jones purchase.

Feist!

What Don Rumsfeld failed to say in the Tillman hearings

In a shocking backroom statement, Donald Rumsfeld, after his House Committee appearance on the Tillman cover up inquiry ,exclaimed

"...Are you kidding? Do you remember Harry Whittington?...One hunting trip is all it takes....Of course 'I don't recall'. I don't want to eat buck shot. In fact I don't recall anything from the years in which I've known Dick. "

It's past time for boycotts. They (and "they" includes Democrats) have refused to listen to anything their "constituents" have to say.

Didn't there used to be a law limiting the number of American businesses a foreigner could buy?

Does anyone really believe the WSJ under Rupe's thumb WON'T be the print version of Fox Noise? (Just prettied up a little bit when compared with the NY Post).

Orwell's Illegitimate Son's picture

Won't it be neat when, after all the Hilary-bashing on FOXNews, and assuming there will still be an election in 2008, Senator Clinton *wins* the presidency by a hair? Then, you'll hear Republicans screaming about how the election was stolen.

Divided government=Divided citizenry

Murdoch is now a US citizen.

He bought his citizenship back in the 80s-to patch up a crime that was being committed-his ownership of media outlets in the US...

Didn't James Bond fight a nemesis like this?

And you never see that film on TV. Wonder why?

I wouldn't trust anything even slightly connected to Ailes or Murdoch.

I like the Update to this post. It needs to be done. This purchase frightens me as we watch the right take over the press too. Enought already!

What every happened to the monopoly laws?

I always find it odd that whenever Fox rants about Soros's "evil Empire", that no one takes on this guys empire (Murdoch). I can't list either man's entire listing of media holdings, think tanks, etc. but it seems that Murdoch has a much bigger influence on the Political landscape then Soros, just saying.

The reason the WSJ is so important to its readers is that they use the information in the paper to help them make business decisions. If the WSJ begins to slant their news, business readers will no longer be able to rely on it for objective fact and it becomes useless to them. When a slanted story costs businessmen real money, Murdoch has ruined his investment.

The business community deserves this. They just cream over the idea that social Darwinism trumps any fairness doctrine. Unfortunately we will ALL be eaten alive.

Murdoch's addiction to power gets worse everyday. He wants us to be tracked and traced in a Pinochet style police state while corporations have no regulations and we fight perpetual wars so the blackshirts can feel "butch"

Yellow Elephant Safari's picture

So the WSJ will become a joke like the fox network. What else is new?

Blue Buddha's picture

As I said before, the WSJ will go from being a normal right-winged newspaper to a fucking batshit crazy right-winged newspaper. In the past, the WSJ would back up half of its talking points with facts and reports, but now that Murdoch has a hold of it, everything will be pulled out their ass.

Mahkno's picture

Wonder how many will cancel their WSJ subscriptions in the coming weeks? Wonder also, how many of those former subs are regular Faux News watchers?

Hopefully, this will make businessmen ditch WSJ in favor of Bloomberg and IBD.

Why don't we use the term monopoly any longer? It was and is a crime to create monopoly. I say was because some government leaders are trying to kill that, and the court is certainly trying to kill it to protect those that pay them off.
what else could it be but that the justices are taking bribes for their votes? can we get the banks of the world to report what our politicians have offshore?

it is a monopoly, and at the end of the game, there is but one player

I really like Rachel Maddow. She is whip smart and very funny. After Thom Hartmann, she is my favorite AAR host.

the thing is, rich, powerful people read and rely on the wall street journal. since rupert basically panders to this group exclusively, i don't see how much will change.

what's he going to do, start lying to the rainmakers? i don't think so.

The Weekly World News would have been a better option and format is/was in line with News Corps comparative advantage.

This will allow IBD and Financial Times to gain market share, as the WSJ subscription etc will decline.

I'm a big fan of Murdoch's takeover of the Wall Street Journal.

• Hopefully he will have time to gut that rag before President Pelosi breaks up his media conglomerate and throws him in jail for cavorting with underage Japanese pop group wrestling stars.

An opportunity to bully the corporation to contribute to the campaigning. If anything that I have learn about both Bush and Fox Network is that they are vindictive to the left wing members. Remember all the TV shows that FOX came up with and how fast the show cancel if there were hint of the Bush administration fucking up, in spite of high ratings.

Excellent observation. Whatever people think of the WSJ editorial, there was a healthly firewall between them and the day to day reporting. This is about borrowing the prestige of the WSJ brand to build their business network. Their plan is to milk the WSJ brand until the FBN has a large market share to run on its own. The WSJ will be in tatters by then.

paranoia's picture

I have wonder that first came out a rumor that Rupert is to buy WSJ, then watch the stock fall on WSJ, then buy it out when the value is at it lowest. Presto they taking over the press. Got to hand it to them for cleverness and the timing.

Murdoch is finally speaking about his 5 billion dollar deal.

When asked about the future of the Wall Street Journal, Murdock replied,

"It will be great for the world. Lately I've ran out of news outlets to display my senseless collection of babble. Are you kidding me, of course the Journal has a bright future. These drunken druggie Hollywood slut IT girls are making me millions. I love 'em all. America will hail me as a king when I bring the IT girls to the top rated financial news source in the world....I'm just so excited!"

BTW, that thingy up in space? Um, I think they called it a 'space station'? Well they named it today. It's called 'The Death Star'. Such a funny name. I wonder why...

Has anyone stopped to wonder if he doesn't care a whit about the WSJ part of the company and only wants the Dow Jones part of the company? What easier way to manipulate the market and keep setting new record highs every time a little bad (aka: realistic) economic news comes out than to just buy the organization that indexes the market.

Or at the very least, enjoy a hefty boost in the insider trading that occupies your free time.

Larry Kudlow of CNBC is a very close confidante of Dick Cheney. Remember everyone, that Roger Ailes hired Chris Matthews at CNBC when he was in charge over there before he moved to FOX "News." Perhaps, Kudlow would move over to that new FOX "Business" Network. Kudlow has no credibility and is a right wing hack who should be held under scrutiny a lot more than he is at the present time.

I will not be renewing my subscription to the Wall Street Journal. I will be looking into how the Financial Times can be delivered to my door in the future.

Not sure how this makes the WSJ less respectable? I guess if Murdock sells it to Bin Laden, then we should worry. He wouldn't sell it to Bin Laden, would he?

There is nothing a broker HATES more than the whiff of a paper advancing its own position in the market. Murdoch's bubble is going to get burst on this one. News for the Rubes.

They actually even discuss the lawsuit filed against News Corp by 2 Fox News employees that had been fired for refusing to distort a story and Fox News succesfully argued in court that they had a 1st amendment right to lie in their news coverage.

Fox News argued and won in court the right for a news corp to lie and call it news.

Faux News indeed.

Yes and no. If the conservatives can slant the WSJ in just the right way, they can also use it to make sure that only those companies run by conservative parasites are invested in while more progressive companies don't get any business.

Or they can create a scare on some company that doesn't want to play ball with the conservatives.

It will not matter if WSJ loses money. Many of his outlets lose money. Its about power, influence and control. The Genie is out of the bottle and you my fellow Americans let it happen. If attention was paid to what he did in other contries - YOU would have seen this coming.

I read he is buying suburban newspapers. More power - more influence - more control. A famous Brit who had cancer was inteviewed many years ago on UK tv. He was very anti Murdoch. He said on tv that he named his cancer RUPERT.
