Why Gonzales Won't Be Fired

gonzo_bush-1.jpg

Sidney Blumenthal: Omertà (or a code of silence) has become the final bond holding the Bush administration together. Honesty is dishonorable; silence is manly; penitence is weakness. Loyalty trumps law. Protecting higher-ups is patriotism. Stonewalling is idealism. Telling the truth is informing. Cooperation with investigators is cowardice; breaking the code is betrayal. Once the code is shattered, however, no one can be trusted and the entire edifice crumbles.

And this is what the 29%ers are cheering for.

Sen. Pat Leahy calls Gonzales' lame response unsatisfactory and wants more than "word parsing".  Sen. Russ Feingold calls for more senators to join in calling for a Special Prosecutor.

Sidney is correct. However, at the core of why he won't be fired is because if Gonzo goes, he will have to be replaced by a more honest, law-abiding AG, who would let the Democrat-run congress uncover more Rove and Cheney scandals. And we can't let that happen now, can we?

DEMS to Gonzo: "This time we really, really, mean it. By this Friday we want a straight answer from you. Don't make us do this again, and again, and again,..."

You'd think a GOPer like Gonzo was doing this on purpose to make Dems look like a bunch of weaklings who don't care to protect the Constitution. Obvioulsy GOPers don't care to protect the Constitution, but that goes without saying.

The problem with that 29% is that they do not see what the rest of the country, or even what those nations in the past have seen. When you have a regime acting in and for its own interests, it will do anything and everything to protect itself. We are already seeing this regime act in a similar fashion as noted in the article. Those 29% do not see that they are just like you and I. That regime sees that 29% as being useful for the time being. When they no longer need them that 29% will be tossed aside without care.

Orwell's Illegitimate Son's picture

You should always keep in mind that the only thing Dick Cheney believes Dick Nixon ever did that was wrong was to resign from the presidency, thereby admitting guilt.

Fast-forward 30 years, and the Globalist Elite FINALLY has their man. To paraphrase John Edwards, "Bush is like Nixon on steroids."

Exactly. All it will take is one John Dean to tell the truth for the entire Mafia administration to crumble. Bush, Cheney and Rove will make Nixon, Erlichman and Haldeman look like boy scouts. We need a deep throat to steer someone in the right direction and find people who will talk about what these criminals have done. It would be nice to have a fourth estate worth a damn also.

They have become so incredibly pathetic it's too easy to forget that they are sooo powerful. And the Republican majority that supports them must believe that the American people are stupid. Are we that stupid?

What person with an ounce of experience and integrity could have watched the Arlen Specter show this week and not be apalled by the Country we have become. What a pathetic little rag doll that is the toy of the Republican Party. He was tossed to be used by Bush, to Gonzales, to the Republican Party in general. There is nothing left there to respect. He could have maintained some dignity but he participated in the rape and abuse a little too readily so that it becomes something else. It becomes collusion.

Both the Democratic and Republican parties have to be the two most laughable bodies every heaped upon a society.
The Republican party gets to start a needless war, breaks with all manner of fiscal responsibility digging a deeper hole for ourselves as well as generations to come. They flout just about every law we are supposed to abide by. They have lied to Congress and the American people while turdblossom ( Rove ) gets to continue thumbing his nose at anyone willing to go blind looking at him. The AG is a liar and yet as hard as the good ole Democrats try, NO ONE seems to be paying for any crimes. Hell, you can even out a CIA officer a get away with it if your a good bud of the president.
The Democrats are really starting to suck ass big time. This Congress is just more of the same. We're still in a war that was our gift in the form of a lie, The AG apparently isn't going anywhere soon, Pelosi backs down off tougher cafe standards for US auto manufacturers and both parties actually have the nerve to leave for a summer recess without accomplishing much nor having anyone convicted of anything.
What a great country of sheeple we live in. This has to be one of the most ineffective and destructive administrations in history and yet all of the outrage seems to have disappeared fom the bloggosphere while a few more of your Constotutional rights continue to be trampled on. We as a people deserve this and then some. Stupid is as stupid does I guess.

He does admit that Gonzo "(H)asn't helped himself by being slippery to the point of being evasive." Ya think?

Let's see, sleazy, unethical behavior, aides resigning and taking the Fifth to avoid testifying, witnesses prevented from testifying by assertions of "executive privilege," and patently false assertions of amnesia, and he thinks this is just a partisan witch hunt.

That's because the 29 percenters are freaking traitors.

They don't support the Constitution - because Bush doesn't.
They don't support the rule of Law - Because Bush dodesn't.
They don't support the election process - because the Republicans don't.
They don't support what is best for the American people - because Bush only cares about himself.

All they want to see is their team winning the superbowl and everyone else can fuck off. In this case their team is the Republicans and the Superbowl is our government. The screwed up thing is that's not supposed to be how this crap works. They just don't care because they think they'll somehow benefit from having a guy like Bush in charge.

Only way those 29 percenters will ever change is when a natural disaster rolls up and destroys their homes and they get to sit around in toxic water for two weeks before Bush decides enough people have noticed his incompetence and he better do something.

Nixon resigned before the Senate convicted him. Only president to do so.

Yes, Ford did pardon Nixon, after Nixon resigned. And who was Ford's Chief of Staff?

Richard (Darth) Cheney!

But he's not alone. There's lots of names from the Watergate and Iran-Contra scandals that have resurfaced here in the Bushevik (mal)administration.

So which of the brain-eating zombies in this administration will come back to haunt us in 20 or 30 years? Maybe we should start a pool.

I like the picture, but it raises one question for me:

Which of them is the 'top' in their relationship?

good question! I would have to guess it goes something like this:
Condi tops chimymcflightsuit
chimpster tops gonzo and rove
gannon tops em' all
pillow talk: abu graib

Maybe it's just me but doesn't that picture of George and Alberto look like they're sharing a moment. Ah true love...

Nixon resigned before he was impeached. The House Judiciary Committee approved the articles of impeachment at the end of July and he resigned the night of August 8, effective the next morning.
Theoretically, Congress could have continued with the impeachment and conviction, notwithstanding his resignation (and, it is debatable, given the text of Article 2, notwithstanding the pardon), found him guilty of federal crimes, resolved that he should be sentenced to jail for them, and then demanded that Ford (or Carter) carry out the sentence or leave him to challenge the constitutionality of the conviction. But the country was tired of the issue. It was an election year and Viet nam was still ongoing, the economy was in terrible shape and the fire was not there on a widespread basis to keep going after him personally for more years. What will happen this time around, who knows. I hope we keep going after the bums and also it would be smart for Democratic Presidential candidates to come out in support of an amendment to restrict the President from pardoning/commuting anyone who worked in his/her administration or contributed to his/her campaign or wealth.

Every blogger and congressperson should call him what he is -- all of them who won't testify, actually -- a COWARD.

Face it -- they are like 5th graders. They can't STAND being called cowards. They always act like they are SO BRAVE -- and the Democrats are such cowards.

Just say, "If you are afraid of Democrats in Congress, how do you expect to face Al Qaida?"

The only punishment for an impeachment conviction is discharge from office and disqualification from holding future office.

Nixon could still have been impeached after he resigned, but would then have only suffered the latter penalty.

Remember, a criminal conviction requires a unanimous jury, only 2/3 of the Senate are needed to convict for impeachment.

Omertà is a popular attitude, common in areas of southern Italy, such as Sicily, Calabria and Campania, where the criminal organizations like the Mafia, 'Ndrangheta, and Camorra are strong. Omertà implies “the categorical prohibition of cooperation with state authorities or reliance on its services, even when one has been victim of a crime.”[1] Even if somebody is condemned for a crime he has not committed, he is supposed to serve the sentence without giving the police any information about the real criminal. A common definition is the "code of silence". Within Mafia culture, breaking the oath of omertà is punishable by death. A common misconception is that the Mafia created or instituted omertà, when, in fact, the code was adopted by Sicilians long before the emergence of Cosa Nostra (some observers date it in the 16th century as a way of opposing Spanish rule [2])

Does anyone else out there think Gonzo might be gay (not that there's anything wrong with that)? He just seems so incredibly feminine. It might go a long way in explaining his subservience and blind loyalty. Maybe he's in love with Bush. Of course I've heard the same thing about Karl Rove.

Ali's picture

Gonzo always has that look of love on his face when he's looking at Bush or Cheney. It is kind of weird. He looks like a little boy.

Anyway, we know, no matter how much of our tax dollars are spent to prosecute this little weasil Bush will pardon him or commute his sentence or whatever - so it's all a waste of time. I sure hope Bush gets the punishment he deserves some day. What a total fucker.

Jerry Says:

And always the real question remains why after all this time, through all the obvious lies and scandals, blatant disregard for the rule of law and the Constitution, years of egregious and unforgivable waste of BLOOD and treasure……WHY is this criminal and sinister Administration allowed to continue?? What is going on?

The people are asleep, thinking someone else is going to come forward and defend it. They aren't heroes they aren't the ones who fight for justice. That died with the old generation from WWII. The new generation has never been tested. Didn't know there was a test, so will be sorrowfully lacking in any knowledge of their civil duties. (Remember, One of the first things this (mis)administration did, was take Civics out of schools. You did know that right?) So they didn't even know there is a test coming. Woefully unprepared to say the least. Not to mention the take over of the MSM. Think that was coincidence? I think not. It was on purpose, to keep the sheeple, sheeple and not thinking. An UNTHINKING populous is easier to control then one that has been instructed on their rights, their liberties, and their freedom. You teach people to think for themselves and you have a hard time controlling them. (look at France).

It will take a revolution to get our White House back. It's been boiling for a LONG time. Longer then I have been alive. And I submit that we won't have elections, or IF we do, it will be another republican (fixed elections anyone?) I highly doubt that anyone will notice. Those who do notice will be hushed up. But honestly with the last executive signing over the seizure of property.

I don't think we are going to have elections. They have set it up so systematically right beneath everyone's nose. Take a little bit here, take a little bit there, they don't notice. Every new bill, or law created takes more freedom from a democracy. Rippling out and changing it slightly just enough not to notice you now don't have it. The patriot act for one was huge, the wiretapping, the lies from Iraq. It's overwhelming the amount of change in 6 yrs. But they did it in increments and No one stepped up and said "No more." Now, it's a done deal. They change the laws, they aren't breaking them, and the people don't know what they have lost.

It was a sad day in 2000, and 2004. What makes anyone think it will be different in 2008 when only a handful of faithful patriots are protesting? A few hundred people isn't going to change the course of this (mis)administration. It's going to probably take either a) Another terrorist attack here in America, or b) When Bu$h Co, declares Martial Law. And by then you think anyone is going to stand up to them?

**shivers in spite of myself**

No, it's cold and it's dark and I might be pessimistic, and I try to have HOPE that it's not as bad, that I am imagining this, but I live in the real world. It's not a conspiracy theory anymore. It's real and it's happening and one person can't fight this fight. I use to think my buddy who would keep me updated on recent changes was NUTS. Truly.. He saw it coming 20 years before, and continues to follow it.. Maybe I am just convinced now. I don't know. But with the blatant corruption now seen in the White House. His theories don't sound half baked now. They are coming alive and I am scared for my family, and for my country.

Does anyone else think that the adoring gaze that Mr. Gonzales is giving to the president is similar to the one that Monica Lewinsky gave President Clinton years ago? I remember that the MSM at the time must have flashed that video millions of times.

Sidney Blumenthal hits it right on the nose. We are being governed by a bunch of bullies, held up in their club house. Don't rat on each other or else. Tell the lie that we rehearsed, and stick with it. Even if you mess up, we'll back you up.
Only one thing. The public isn't buying it anymore. Start the impeachment hearings on Gonzales. They won't know what hit them.
Another thing. Do you see how Bush's eyes meets Gonzales' eyes. Weird, man.
