Schieffer Slams Ted Stevens and Applauds Ethics Reform

schieffer_8-5-07_close-01.jpg

In his closing commentary on Face The Nation, Bob Schieffer applauds the Democratic majority's attempt to clean up Congress (although you won't hear him credit them) and uses Ted Stevens' recent raid as an example of the dangers of not enacting reform.

...As for Stevens, a friend says he sincerely believes he's done nothing wrong. To me, that's the most damning part. If that is what the Capitol's longest serving legislator really believes, then there's no question tougher laws were needed.

The last couple of minutes is often the best part of Face The Nation.

ALL the repugs think they do no wrong, despite the constitution and the state laws in effect. bush is just their mantra of crime.

Yawn....

This aged bloviating assclown of the Corporatist Media Noise Machine knows little and understands less. Lemme see....

Yeah, now I remember it wasn't so long ago that Mr. Schieffer was, like the rest of his ilk, worshipping at the feet of The Colossus of the CodPiece

wake me when they hire somebody with some ethics at his network...oh, some brains would be nice too.

Replace the Nation?

I wonder what Ted Stevens did to piss off Alberto and George. They don't usually investigate their own.

Way to promote your site!

Republicans will claim they didn't make this shitpile, they are only climbing to the top of it. They have no choice in the matter because the market ultimately decides.

What we have in this country is a decidership.

Good for Bob, expressing moral outrage while carefully avoiding any credit or comparison to the Democrats.

Kinda like, in old Europe, if an aristocrat committed a crime, you had to punish him, but you needed the word of a gentleman, not a peasant. Or, in the United States a few generations back, you couldn't convict a White man on the testimony of a Black, Mexican, or Indian. Maintaining the social order is more important than anything, including fraud, theft, corruption, or thousands of dead in a misbegotten war.

The Democrats have been second-class citizens inside the Beltway for so long they think its normal, as do do otherwise rational, veteran reporters like Schieffer.

I really hate when Bob has Condi on. He cannot get her to answer a question in a yes or no manner.

Who can?

Thought Biden was the longest-serving legislator, not Stevens?

They're just following Billo's example of tossing your own under the bus when it's convenient.

Hope Murtha sees this clip.

No one wants to hear the truth Americans would rather listen to the liars. Bob is one great Journalist and even if people don't want to hear the truth he gives it. Little Timmy Russert is just sucking up to the White House and promoting guest books. ABC is working as hard as Fox News to spread the lies. To bad some people don't want to hear the truth at lease the troops know they've been used and played by the White House. The White House is aware of the attitudes of our troops and don't want Americans to know how up set they are. Yes there are some soldiers giving reporters a positive bright picture but they are all so getting a bonus in their checks. My daughter is in Afghan and she said soldiers are asked to help and if they do they will get a bonus. Some soldiers have no choice as their families aren't getting much money with such low salaries. Every little bit helps so if they have to lie and get paid so be it. Notice how the Generals and Rummy all said it was not their responsibility to tell the truth to the Tillman Family that their son was murdered.

No, you mean the *loudest* serving legislator, not the longest.

If I was President--First thing I would do is pass a law that allows all public to see every-ones complete income tax submitted.2nd ,I would quit and find out how these leaches acquire their wealth and become rich like them.3rd, I'd be paid off by a book publisher( in the $millions),even if it stinks-Hello Hillary and Obama-nice legal payoff !
After 1 1/2 terms,most politicians become multi-millionair$.
Example :Take this poor guy from Jamaica, comes broke to USA,joins the military, goes up the ranks, becomes Bush's house servant. Before his appointment he must declare his wealth--$21 million. Now how did Powell on a military salary get so rich ? Payoffs !

I always liked him..he has, along with everyone of them let me down as far as being true journalists. But Schieffer is in a class all his own....althought there have been times when I think he could of done a better job ,we have to remember what he and the others are up against. The most power corrupted admin in history...I still consider Bob Schieffer to be a real journalist....I like him alot more than the others..as for Stevens....fuck him...if he's guilty throw his ass in prison....Alaska can get cold.......NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!....to fucking bad

We've decided to pull the Bonds post. We apologize for the inconvenience.

A major complaint that conservatives have about liberals is that
some of them are intellectually honest. Honesty has long been
held to be a threat to capitalism. Honesty reduces the opportunity
for exploitation and subservience to the hierarchal structure that
provides its adherents advantage.

Why don't people understand that capitalism and honesty are
not compatible any more than democracy and capitalism or
freedom and capitalism. Anything that impedes the acquisition
of wealth and concentration of power is the enemy. Our
democracy is in shambles because it regulates profits and
responsible actions. Freedom makes markets less predictable.

The psychology here is that it is not the movers' and shakers'
bad decisions, nor is a faulty or incomplete economic model
that are at fault. The problem is our fault. We had too much
freedom, not enough conformity, and democracy puts an
unnecessary burden on profits too. Therefore, the solution to an
unstable capitalist system based on deceit is greater control,
less freedom, and eliminating pesky civil liberties.

Presumably, a less naive' group of founders of our nation
would have foreseen the problems democracy and freedom
cause and would have thought better of it and created a
system that is more like the fascist model, in which a central
group of business and political professionals carry out their decisions without incurring the expenses involved with convincing Americans to behave in the manner expected of them. Professionals will tell the people which end is up
and the people will agree to it. Why Americans will "agree to it" when all their reasons for doing so are stripped from them leaves only one answer, tyranny.

There is no problem with Ted Stevens because he only
did what the hierarchy approves, because dishonesty
is the natural state of man. The complainers who
bring the wrong doing of people like Stevens to light,
do not see the world in proper context, and
misinterpret the lessons of the democratic experiments
in Greece, "The Enlightenment," The American Revolution,
and other changes in perception of the relationship
between the people and those who govern them, that
are the real problem.

The fact is, the new law is so watered down it just continues to endorse legalized bribery.

Ted Stevens, serving his country during a time of war.

The corporatism of the republican party has greedily strayed so close to big business that Fascism is only one block up from K street.

I do not believe the corruption reform goes far enough. Yet it is going in the right direction at least.

Hold on folks. This is just the beginning of the scandels that will unfold, under this administration.

They have some shit going that is simply going to blow your minds.

I believe Robert Byrd is the longest serving.

"As for Stevens, a friend says he sincerely believes he's done nothing wrong."

Well, given how long he's been doing this stuff, he probably believes it's business as usual. He probably thinks, "NOW they're calling me on it?!"

Those crooked Rethugs.
