Quote of the Day
By John Amato Tuesday Aug 07, 2007 7:15pm"One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I'd be a great president."
-- Mitt Romney, explaining today why it's okay that none of his five sons enlisted in the military.

Mandatory enlistment for children of chicken hawks?
Romney passed up on Viet Nam and went to France instead! His boys went . . .to Idaho?
How can Romney run for president when one of the prime requisites of the Mormon faith is of non-violence and tolerance towards others?
flip-flop-flip-flop :D
These strapping young men should somehow be 'volunteered'.
WWII had the Fighting Sullivans. Now we have the Dodging Romneys.
-GSD
Odd how the British Royals all have to serve in some capacity.
5 able bodied young men and not 1 of them will enlist......well,if that don't beat all...it's ok...their mormons......he'll just send every other religion to go fight for him.....what's wrong with this picture?
I was hoping this would come up.
Wanker.
What a douchebag.
As you'll recall, Mitt avoided combat duty in the rice fields of Vietnam by getting multiple deferments to perform his Mormon mission in the vineyards of France. And while candidate Romney has called for a war against virtually all Muslim groups worldwide and pledged to "double Guantanamo," he has deployed his sons to the cornfields of Iowa to aid his campaign. The perfect hair and gleaming teeth of the Romney clan are found on the Five Brothers blog, not with a band of brothers outside of Baquba.

Gekke @ 3:
Watch out. He'll soon get tired of everyone asking about this. And perhaps they are needed at home to hose down their family dogs.
How can what has become the most powerful, aggressive, arrogant, despotic, crusading, invading, militantly destructive nation on earth be lead by a cowardly man who sired a cowardly family?
cowards breeding more cowards.
Yep, the boys are needed at home to clean the dawg shit off of the top of the station
wagon after the family vacation... Loooooouuuu zzzzzers!!
Hey, cut them some slack. Iowa is a pretty tough place man!
An RPG for every SUV
Yeah, his policies don't make any sense, but he sure is handsome!
DOUBLE GITMO!
Heckuva job, Willard.
Not necessarily cowards, but it's definitely hypocritical. I don't want them to go either. But then he should be working to END the war, not continue it. That statement reeks of hypocrisy, with a side of false justification.
Gekke @ 3:
While Mittens flip-flops like a fish out of water, where did you get this Mormon BS? Mormonism is frought with violence, and no Mormon will tell you otherwise (they call it persecution). Check out http://www.thechristianexpositor.org/page58.html for a pretty accurate summary of Mormons, what they believe, and its relationship to the truth.
Good to see Mitt Romney's Chicken Hawk Children starring in a week long Doonesbury series in real life.
How cool is that?
~Nyc
It's a privilege to defend your country, some are too priviliged to defend theirs.
We already elected a bush and a dick, now the Right wants a mutt. Should complete the Bestiality Boys.
Check out the hot sons. Why every female in America could have a crush on her favorite.
Aren't they cute? And so smart not to die for a lie.
http://fivebrothers.mittromney.com
Fucking disgraceful. Not that this is an exception to the rule for the vast majority of whores in politics that only shill for corporate and wealthy interests.
This is why we keep the masses ignorant, so they don't end up pissed off like me after realizing that my 22 years of active duty and reserve service including mobilizing after 9/11 has all been a fucking waste of time and energy and does not in any way serve the Constitution I took an oath to - while assholes like his kids and the Bush Twins contribute NOTHING but gain everything.
Just another rich gop chickenhawk.
KO's worst person in the world was hilarious.
And the winner of the "Dick 5 Deferments Cheney Excuse for Not Serving Award" goes to....the envelope please....
....Ladies and gentlemen for the first time we have a 6-way tie! Mitt Romney and his 5 sons!
Accepting the award tonight for the Romneys are all the fellow chickenhawks of the GOP presidential field as the Romneys could not attend as they were busy tying the family pet to the roof of their station wagon for the 10 hour trip to Orlando.
So - Mitt, when you lose the election . . will they enlist then to fight the war you support?
Where do you start?
Kermit T. Frog @ 27:
That's when Mitt pulls out the Dick Cheney catch all excuse: "My sons have other priorities" which you either accept or you are helping the terrorist win.
Critics are looking at this dust-up all wrong.
How many GI's today in Iraq and Afghanistan would volunteer to serve in the killing fields of Iowa?
Damn few would be my guess. God bless and protect the Romney clan.
Frankly, I'd be happy if no one's son or daughter enlisted until this war/occupation and administration is over. But if he can justify his sons' not enlisting with this rationale, I can justify the need for them to be the first to be drafted.
C'mon -- the article says that before they worked to elect this great Patriot, they worked as "real estate developers, sports marketers and advertising executives."
It's really unfair to ask that they sacrifice even more for their country.
J² @ 18:
Thanks for the link, would be fun if someone from "you_tube" asked questions about that during the non-existent up coming on-line republican debate;) heck maybe Jon Stewart or Keith Olberman could do a nice little segment on that nugget of theology.
What's not to love about the questioner's ability to cut to the quick in summarizing Romney's excuse (err ... "answer"):
"He told me the way his son shows support for our military and our nation is to buy a Winnebago and ride across Iowa and help him get elected."
You go, girl!
If anyone needed proof that this guy is brain-dead and just doesn't get it - this is it.
What REAL American would say such an insanely stupid thing?
We don't owe it to this guy to vote him into office just to satisfy his selfish personal ambition or because his useless sons think he'd be a good president.
He really is a f*cking Ken doll - no genitalia and as plastic as they come.
*
LibertyLover @ 8:
Yes - and it needs to keep coming up.
Wanker . . . .
*
Be angry and amazed all you want, but treat him seriously! He pulled it off in Massachusetts where no one would have believed he could be elected. Look at the rest of the sorry RePub bunch and they may just be setting him up--by default. Dangerous. Keep researching his past--he's mostly clean, but not to be believed [ever]. He bought Teflon from Reagan---beware. And he and his 'followers' will put lots of money where their mouths are. BEWARE!
My sons serve America by getting me elected.....hmmmmmm...no...give me a minute........WTF
This guy with his banana-shaped head . . . he's priceless. He should make an album . . . a comedy album.
Larry @ 37:
This is a valid point and in spite of the past 7 or so years needs to be remembered. Money and teflon carry a lot of weight with ill-educated Americans.
I think Mitt is an airhead - a very rich airhead - but an airhead.
He'll probably get elected to the presidency.
arroyo @ 41:
Curse your evil tongue!
That is odd. I would think that enlisting to fight in the war that Daddy favors so much would be much more helpful. Surely he can spare just one son.
This comment is utterly reprehensible. To compare riding around in a Windbago trying to get their father elected President to our soldiers facing death every day in Iraq is so far beyond the pale I can hardly believe it. It is a slap in the face to those serving as well as their families who worry every day till their loved ones return.
BlueKnuckle @ 40:
I seriously cannot imagine the Republican base electing a Mormon. MA would be easy compared to the Repubican base. Money and teflon cannot overcome pure bigotry.
I'm sure they smell too good to fight in Iraq.
ashton @ 45:
I said it before---beware! RePubs only want to win. They are organized, united [once they com"mitt" to their guy, and don't forget--they know how to "steal" elections. All is excused if the big money, Halliburton et. al. feel that Mitt could used to stay in control! Remember these are the people who created puppets like Reagan and Bush [es]. Beware!
Keeping the GOP chickenhawk tradition alive and well. Well done Mitt. Apples dont fall far from the tree
Never answer the actual question - thank Bush for that legacy to Republicans. Can you imagine another Republican President that just sits there ignoring everything the people want to know?
All repugs should serve little shrubs war.
ashton @ 45:
even if they went to iraq, they would just sit by an air conditioner and steal money, like all the bluebloods do.
Larry @ 47:
But they DO still have to get their base out for a Mormon. If they suppress their own Christian vote, the Dems will undoubtedly win.
Was that Mitt Romney or Ned Flanders?
BennyP @ 1:
I'm glad you said it first. Seriously, we need mandatory military (not reserve or national guard) service for EVERY candidate for president.
And EVERY candidate's kids of draft age should do service (as well as every senator's and every congressman's kids).
We need them to make decisions about war based on the human cost, not the financial gain.
Bush wasn't really elected in 2000 or 2004. He needed every ignorant backwoods Bible thumper in America to vote for him to give him enough votes to steal both elections and get away with it. Rove hand counted every one of those peckerwood votes beforehand. Yet even against "the most liberal Senator in America," Bush only "got" 52%.
Consequently, I can't take Mitt seriously as a threat. He may be an asshole, he may be an empty suit, he may be a chicken hawk, but despite these requirements for being a good Republican President, he lacks the one absolute qualification--being a "true Chrustian." Mormons don't count. The Bible thumpers would rather elect Rudy, as distasteful as he is to them. At least a Catholic is second-rate Chrustian. But a religion invented in the 1800s by a man convicted of fraud in a New York court? Please. Miracles are much more believable when they're OLD MIRACLES!
Come on Mitt--if you really want to be President, do the real flip flop--go down to you local Baptist Church, start twitchin', and get with the REAL JEE-A-SUS! Put aside the diabolical Joseph Smith and his fake golden tablets! Hook yourself up to 210 volts of pure Holy Ghost power! Get right with the real McCoy LORD! I'm talkin' `bout the PROTESTANT JEE-A-SUS!!!!
Can I get an AMEN?
bamboozled @ 55:
Voters should consider demanding this . . . and tend to do so. It could never be law; it's unconstitutional.
Then again, McCain served as harsh a duty as you probably ever could . . . and he's hard to see as the man truly compassionate to the troops, hawkish as he is. Where are today's Eisenhowers?
This could be Romney's Macaca moment. Expect to see this footage aired again and again by his opponents.
hey mitt, say that again please. you say your sons are serving their country by voting for you. that equates in my mind to let somebody else's son go to iraq and serve. i'll pay it lip service but when it comes right down to it, my kids aren't going. that's the way it is, talk up the war right to point when it hits home, my kids, no way in hell are they going, they are too bright, have too much of a future ahead of them to lose them in this war. let those with no forseeable bright future serve. what do they have to lose.
WAKE UP MILITARY. this is what the right wing conservative element really thinks of you.
you mean nothing to them and yet you continue to support them. WHY????
BlueKnuckle @ 53:
I truly do hope so, and while I generally agree with both of you, I have lived too many years of pain, after I was certain that the voting public would surely know what that RePub candidates are generally attractive names or faces [Reagan, W., Romney etc.] with limited experience, or,worst, limited brains, who will be the willing pawns of others. I hope that the universal disgust and anger out there will continue through to the election.
In recent weeks we've heard a lot more from conservative pundits the argument for not feeling badly for the suffering and sacrifice of these remarkable young people.
the argument goes: "Hey, they volunteered. They need to serve as long as we say, as often as we say, as ill-equipped as we say, and without the succeeding medical and financial support however we say."
The Repugnicans do not care about soldiers. To them, you are a means to an end.
HYPOTHETICAL question: five sons, how fast does romney change his position on iraq if one or two of his boys are over there liberating the iraqui people. hypocrits all.
no longer a proud american @ 62:
He's too busy Saving Private Romney . . . (and by "private" I mean managed by a private corporate political subsidiary of Bush/Reagan Inc.)
Apparently Mitt & his sons are unaware that they can show support & help Mitt become president by voting for him, and that can be done by a postal vote whilst stationed in Iraq.
=my2c
Look at how some of these campaign shills rush to this asshole's defense and talk about Romney like he was the greatest Governor MASS ever had. Truth was, he sucked hairy ass and would have been trounced if he'd run again! But honestly, look at some of the paid shills on his pages!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhFVy3Iiaj0&mode=user&search=
This kid looks like Karl Rove's bastard lovechild! Typical little fat, college Republican who supports the war...as long as OTHER people fight it!

chuckin' fickenhawks all of them!
for once, damn it, just once! I'd like to see a military mom turn it around like a DEVILISH republican would if the situation was vice versa.
Angry Red-Faced Mom pointing her finger and exclaiming, "HOW DARE YOU COMPARE THE RISK THAT MY SON IS TAKING TO ANYTHING THAT ANYONE IS DOING STATESIDE!? HOW DARE YOU!? NOW YOU TAKE THAT BACK!! AND YOU BETTER APOLOGIZE TO MY SON AND TO ALL THE SOLDIERS THAT YOU JUST INSULTED. WELL! ARE YOU GOING TO APOLOGIZE?!!!"
HA!HA! Jon Stewart just made fun of Romney for this quote on the Daily Show!
The wealthy and privileged are to valuable to expend in the sordid labor of killing and being killed for the benefit of their own wealth and privilege.
do his kids get benefits....oh thats right.....he's filthy rich.....nevermind
Mitt's sons are total trust fund babies. Mitt thinks the war is good enough for families he'll never meet but not good enough for his precious cargo
Tagg ?? Tagg Romney? He should be eliminated on the fact he named his son Tagg.
I think that means they will personally be destroying America by supporting the butt Romney.
The "Don't ask, don't tell rule is in effect"
Mittens? Love that nickname! Maybe I'm just easily amused but that had me laughing out loud, J²!
What a dickwad. His favorite baseball team must be the Dodgers.
Mittens is a Mormon, through and through. He got pissed off at the radio interviewer because he got asked a few questions about his "religion." It fits right in with the persecution complex they have going on. Next, he'll whine about being treated unfairly when asked about his stand on some issue, when pointed out that he's toeing the Mormon line. And finally, he'll be a sore loser.
If, God forbid, he actually wins, you can bet that red telephone on his desk will be a direct link to Salt Lake City.
There's an interesting bit of Mormon lore about one of their own saving the country from certain doom, which of course they say is just not true. But Mormons really like to revise history, and only admitted their culpability in the 1850's Mountain Meadows Massacre in the past couple of years, first after denying it ever happened, and then denying they were involved. The Mormon people pretty much do -- and believe -- what they're told, which explains why Utah is white collar crime central, and always falling victim to scam after scam.
I imagine the Romey boys feel a bit deprived. After all a great republican as Cheney has 5 deferments. But alas there is no draft, therefore no deferments to be aquired to establish the aristocratic birth.
Hey, if Pat Tillman can do it ?
So if they believe as Dad in "double down on Guantanamo" and surging in Iraq. They ar young enough, healthy too. Why aren't they signing up to fight and serve their country? Yes yes I know its voluntary service. That shouldn't be a disclaimer to act on what you believe in.
Or is it they really don't believe in it enough to fight for it. ? Yet believe just enough, for others to.?
Mitt's father, George Romney, scuttled his presidential chances when he came out against the Vietnam War in 1967. Ask Mitt about that.
However, avoiding military service is a Romney family tradition. Besides Mitt, his brother Scott also avoided Vietnam. He preferred Harvard Law School, but still, he should have been eligible in 1969 when he graduated. Apparently he did not serve.
George didn't serve in WWII either, he preferred to stay at the head of the American Automobile Manufacturers Association.
As to military service, the family seems to be consistent at least.
He is the incarnation of Bob, the subgenius.
http://www.subgenius.com/
chickenshit chickenhawks
that is just a disgraceful thing for Romney to say. 5 military age sons and not one othem serving because they "made other career choices." I don't really advocate the children of our "leaders" serve in the wars, they didn't make the decisions. I do advocate however that the leaders themselves serve. In this push button age we live in there is no reason they cannot be on the front lines. No longer is age a detriment to fighting. So require those that vote for war to be a part of it. Then lets see how many times our soldiers are sent off to fight some "dangerous" third world country with a military several technological generations behind ours. In ancient Rome, the generals were right there with their troops, leading them into battle. I see no reason why Bush, Cheney, Leiberman, etc., etc., shouldn't be doing the same.
The most self serving of statements by the most self serving of assholes.
George leading the troops into battle? Would you want a Texas National Guard lieutenant leading you into battle?
I think not.
He's a deep thinker along the lines of the current carpetbagger in the WH.
Rufus @ 84:
of course not. the point being that the people making these decisions should feel the consequences of those decisions.
I don't want his sons supporting troops, I want them to support the US. Could it possibly be he won't support this unjustified war?
Typical liar and chickenhawk.
Che's Lounge @ 17:
Typical asshole repug!
Liberal AND Proud @ 83:
That's about right.
I can still remember his appearance on Jay Leno and his two-minute sales pitch about the 3 themes to his campaign and why he should be elected President - strong economy, family values, and a stronger defense. I guess family values is making sure your sons do not join the military.
He is an ultra wealthy phony from a privileged political family, a background not unlike W!
Oh, and not that his five sons would receive ANY perks if Poppa became prez....
Why can't he just say that their not enlisting in the military is/was based on their religious beliefs?
Talk about a firestorm he'd open with that one! The religious right chickenhawks would rise up to denounce him... Ironic isn't it?
I'm sure all the serving forces would agree that helping get daddy elected is easily as brave and as great a service as getting your face blown off for Bush by an angry, crazy Arab who doesn't have a family anymore.
Yall just don't get it. We must be willing to die to preserve their way of life. The Bush/Romney class are more important than us. Where would America be without their gentle leadership? We owe them more than we can ever hope to repay, and what's the big deal if one or two of us have to pay the ultimate price? Feudalism works.
Come on folks, give Mitt and his 5 little Mittens a break here. They're only upholding the proud Utah/Mormon tradition of being rabid cheerleaders for Shrub's war so long as they don't have to go off and participate in it.
The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah's largest newspaper, ran a revealing story some months back. Turns out Utah, where Shrub and his policies have enjoyed overwhelming support, has the lowest ratio of enlistees of all fifty states. Imagine that.
Just like the phony, smarmy little bastards interviewed at the recent college republican's convention, these chickenshit chickenhawks are more than willing to go about leading their cushy lives while asking others to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Thoseboys, those dear boys. Heroes one and all!
Mitt should take himself and his troop of patriot boys straight to Iraq and win this illegal war and the presidency all in one campaign trip.
How about it Mitt? Can you do this one little thing and show us what you and the boys are really made of Mitt? Or are just a chickenhawk blowhard Mutt?
Let me see, fearing for your life and the lives of your buddies every minute of every day, tour after tour-longing for a good hotel and the good life while stuck in a winnebago out among the little people in the middle of nowhere. I can see the parallel. Just what America needs another silver spoon, elitist, clueless, waste of space who is ready to be our next decider.
tHeGaMeOfLiFe @ 88:
I do hope you meant him and not me.
Politicians love to send other people's kids over to other countries to die. But try to send their own and there's a HUGE problem.
I have a $50 bet with my wife that states that G W will not make it to the next election.
We'll have his ass before then. Gonzo is only the beginning.
Pray for our constitution.
