AT&T Censors Pearl Jam's Anti-Bush Lyrics At Lollapalooza
By Logan Murphy Wednesday Aug 08, 2007 1:42pm
Via Down With Tyranny:
CMJ is reporting that AT&T censored Pearl Jam's Lollapalooza set on Sunday. Maybe they figured no one would notice. I guess this has to be expected when one gets in bed with freedom's mortal enemy: corporations, which will always pimp for the status quo. The was an AT&T Blue Room live broadcast set up and an AT&T "content monitor" found "Daughter" too risque for Lollapalooza fans.
Maybe they objected to Eddie quoting that subversive Neil Young! No, it wasn't that. According to the Pearl Jam website it was lines sung by Eddie: "George Bush, leave this world alone" and "George Bush find yourself another home" that offended them so. Pearl Jam doesn't seem too happy: Read more...

Feist!
all of your poor people whining about your rights.
BORING!!!!
Big whoop. Blogs censor commentors' posts on a daily basis. What's the difference if it's an online weblog or a telecommunications giant doing the censoring?
If you can explain this for me, then you either should get a job with this government or you already have a job with this government.
Great Quote at the Top of that Page...................
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross." - Sinclair Lewis
Wow. Wow. Holy shit. Dear Lord, I hope we survive this administration. If a democrat does not win the white house next year, Canada here I come.
AT&T is just a subsidiary of the NSA. Censureship in their new mission.
What do you expect from a Giant Corp who sells your information to the government?
Yeah and will you drop your iPhone in protest? LOL
Orwell's Illegitimate Son @ 3:
Mostly, I think the private censorship that takes place is to control threatening speech. If Rush Limbaugh says, "A democrat in the white house would be a disaster." Then he should have every right to say it and not be censored. This story's example doesn't meet the criteria for what can be justified and prudent censoring. In my humble opinion. P.S. I work in the private sector.
Emmmmmm, Eddie...another on my long list of guys I'd like to bonk. Cute and politically active. A yummy combo.
AnnCoultersMoustache @ 8:
Exactly. If only we were so inclined and organized.
Pearl Jam is the coolest band -ever-.
strawberry @ 10:
My, my. I do declare. Such sexist comments have given me the vapors. Penifore, do fetch me a seltzer.
Another reason to never sign up with AT&T
or Verizon...
or Sprint...
ugh...
I like George Carlin's quote better: when fascism comes to America, it'll be wearing Nikes and a smiley face t-shirt.
And indeed it has.
PurplePatriot @ 9:
If Sean Hannity says, someone should take out Hillary Clinton, then that's ok.
If Keith Olberman says that Bush is a despicable person, then that's bad.
AnnCoultersMoustache @ 8:
Didn't buy one. Wouldn't buy one. I worked for those AT&T arsholes and as soon as I could get service from someone other than AT&T, I was there-even though it's really 6-1 half a dozen to another with most of these corporation thingies.
"freedom isn't free, there's a hefty fuckin' fee"
Team America, World Police........Literally.
Our masters know what's best for us, how dare
we to have free reign of our thoughts.
I love that sequence in 'King of the Hill' when Bobby wants to be "Eddie Cheddar" and then shreds some cheese on his guitar. Good stuff!
How dare Pearl Jam attempt to address the public.
It's the public duty to address only the NSA.
I hope the government sanctioned record & book burnings begin in the winter; it's too hot outside now.
PurplePatriot @ 13:
And don't call Bush "Daughter"
Orwell's Illegitimate Son @ 3:
censor or delete retarded garbage? granted I'm sure there is some illegitimate deleting (and I've always despised the "this is private INTERWEB property we'll mess with your posts if we want" way of doing things) but sometimes it's necessary.
Dumb asses at AT&T. Anti-Bush sells like hot cakes. Dick stiffener pharmaceuticals (thank god for spellcheck) now use "Impeach Bush" in their email spam. Duh!
This complete story should be forwarded to every member of Congress with the remarks that this is a demonstration of what everybody fears: the corporations are going to use an powers they are granted to stiffle free speech, to suppress unfavored speech, and by extension, to stiffle freedom of assembly.
Pearl Jam, in the meantime, needs to sue AT&T, for violating their civil rights and also for any business-related breaches, like failure to provide an agreed upon service: it is a cinch that they would not have been censored had they been singing a hymn to Bush.
In the meantime, I think anybody who is a customer of AT&T should stop doing business with them. AT&T is clearly an anti-American organization.

I'm waiting for A(assholes) T(times) & T(Two)
to claim is was 'just an unfortunate technical glitch.
dear richie rich, i would slap your face for your stupid remark, but i don't want to put my hand up your ass.
your remarks are just the same as the nazis used to quelle dissent. remember, the rights we lose so do you.
BTW it's time to start a nationwide boycott of any company or corporation that
censors the American citizen's right to dissent or comment on bush or any of his administration. let them know that this kind of illegal censorship will be very expensive to their financial bottom line.
lucid fiction @ 28:
According to the PJ site,
Right.
dadams @ 29
I think he left off the /sarcasm tag.
It goes beyond AT&FT censoring a concert they sponsored. They have EVERY right to do that. The problem is that they are one of the biggest proponents of abolishing net neutrality and what they really want is to be able to choke off ANYTHING on the net they or their masters in the GOP don't like. Content you or I put up could be effectively cut off from AT&FT's Internet.
The reason AT&FT is able to re-acquire their monopoly that the gubment broke up once is because of their agreement to give the NSA/GOP any and all info about their "customers" that they asked for.
Quid pro quo.
Boycotts are illegal under the Patriot Act.
AT&T: Bush World, Delivered.
Only six months left on my Cingular contract, and I'm Audi 5000 from there.
I betcha AT&T were afraid the dreaded BillO would come after them. Yep, I betcha that's what it was. ;)
I took Richie Rich's comment as sarcasm (#2). Maybe I'm wrong.
[Deleted. Get a clue, you are getting your knickers in a twist over a parody post]
What a feable and weak excuse offered by AT&T. Suggest we all click on the CMJ
website(under picture above) and when getting to that site, go to third para., clicking
on "their site" and fill out the form available to express your dissatisfaction w/ALL of
the Telecommunication Industry(which are slime bags and are in bed with this rouge
administration). Let someone hear your angry/opinion/views concerning this censorship
by AT&T.
[Deleted. The flamewar over a joke post is finished]
Of course I meant the comic book character.
I always wondered like Bart Simpson is if Richie Rich was Casper before he died.
And...as mentioned above, thousands sold out to AT&T for.....a gadget. A shiny piece of minor technology. (one that has less battery life than the average cell phone.) They stood in line for hours, unmindful of their 'outrage' against AT&T selling personal information to the Bush administration, just so they could overpay to get a shiny new toy. Suckers.
No wonder these politicians think so little of their constituents....how easily distracted they are from their liberties.
dadams @ 30:
good living in your cave and eating leaves
Anyone on this thread happen to know the email address of AT&T where a person
can register a complaint or otherwise contact AT&T to express an opinion???
Helloworld @ 24:
hello back atcha,
question: just out of curiousity, when do you deem it "necessary" for a mega-corp to decide when and what to censor? what other freedoms do you think it is acceptable for for-profit institutions to curtail?
and in regards to pearl jam and this censorship-- i find it utter BS that at&t would claim that it was some strange glitch. right, some strange glitch that just happened to cut out the bush references. effin liars.
Eddie should have known that you can't do that in America anymore. We live in a dictatorship.
Samson- @ 44:
You are right on and correct...we need to contact AT&T and give them our thoughts.
Anyone remember when the reich-wing MSM had a collective hissy fit a few years back because Eddie Vedder placed a rubber mask of herr dubyah on a microphone stand? They claimed Eddie "impaled" the president's head with a microphone stand.
Dr. Matt @ 47:
Tepes Eddie?
Sounds like a Tepes in a teapot.
Dr. Matt @ 47:
Here's a photo of what caused the fake reich-wing outrage.

We should do what they do and send them a bill.
ysbaddaden @ 50:
Did some googling and found that Customer Dissatisfaction with AT&T can be registered at following:
info@nbrii.com
Send them an email.....
Doggiebobo @ 43:
Your best bet would probably be someone in China or India.
Doggiebobo @ 51:
ah, thanks for the link Doggiebobo! i'll definitely send them an email...
hadenuf @ 34:
That can't be true. You can switch to any carrier you please in a free market. You can also dump any AT&t stocks or affiliated companies.
crazylove @ 37:
Oh. Just came on, it looked like a wiggly worm. Plastic.
Pearl Jam is not the only band that was censored during the broadcast. The same thing happened when John Butler started talking about bush at Bonnaroo during the song called Gov Did Nothing

That order had to come from way on high. They had to be prepared for it. The chimp pressing the "censor" button had to know that from on high that anything anti-Bush was to be censored. We cannot let these corporations control the internet.
Samson- @ 53:
What does that address have to do with AT&T? info@nbrii.com = http://www.nbrii.com/

Censoring anti-government comments! Jesus, what is this country coming to?Dr. Matt @ 59:
I Googled "AT&T+Customer Dissatisfaction" and that is the email address that came up. Sorry
if it is incorrect. SeeDr. Matt @ 61 for perhaps a better address.
this is why I do not have them. Not only do they censor you, but spy on you.
Brilliant!
Doggiebobo @ 63:
thanks Dr. Matt...
and what the heckfire-fiddlesticks-fussy britches, i'll send emails to both
I watched the Tom Petty headline set from Bonnaroo last year on AT&T and they even censored the words "let's get to the point, let's roll another joint" from the song "You Don't Know How It Feels" from his set there. I was, as they say in Britain, gobsmacked. I mean really, just because TP says it doesn't mean you are or are not going to do it. In fact, as a teen, if it appeared something was being withheld from me, I'd be more interested in it, not less.
We're all complicit in this though. We authorize officials who allow the government to receive information from these crooks. This really shouldn't be that surprising.
TC @ 67:
WHAT? What is this "WE authorize officials".....I most certainly did not
Absolutely OUTRAGEOUS and ABSOLUTELY condemnable. Bush may be a cow but he is far from sacred. In fact if only there was indeed a God then he would go straight to Hell after all he has done. Unfortunately he will spend the rest of his life enjoying the finest health care while denying it to others, the highest quality of security while stripping an entire nation (Iraq) of it and he will remain free while taking our freedoms.
AT&T needs a good goddamned boycott!
We elect them I should say....people are too disinterested in their country's fate and more interested in what Rosie said or something.
TC @ 70:
TC @ 67:
I am sorry, but i have been anything BUT complicit. Many people have been standing up to this tyrany but to no avail. Complicit my ASS!
The Blue Room front page now has a slide that reads:
"The editing of the Pearl Jam performance on Sunday night was a major mistake by a webcast vendor and completely contrary to our policy. We are working closely with the vendor and the band to post the song in its entirety on this site and ensure that this does not happen again."
You can believe them or not.
TC @ 70:
Okey, I now understand. However, I would also state that..."It seems evident that many people
are too disinterested........". Some of us, on the other hand, are involved and do as much as we
can to spread the word as to the truth and facts.
xoites defends Constitution @ 71:
I have too....but to the rest of the world, they see Americans as voting in these crooks. I only mean complicit as the country in general. I am not saying you specifically. But the country in general is complicit for facilitating these actions. That is all I am saying.
TC @ 74:
Interesting to note that Ohio just destroyed most of it's 2004 voting records. In my opinion, based on what i have been able to gleen from what little information there is Bush lost twice. He also has been President twice.

-I agree. I'm sorry, I should have been more concise. I only mean that the country is generally culpable, simply as American citizens, to some tiny tiny degree, especially many of those who have known this guy was evil from day one, are culpable.
Ok, TC, it seems we are arguing semantics. The thing is, with the media complicit it does not seem to matter a damn what we think or do. Any opposition to Bush is either ignored, denigrated or in the case this thread is about; censored.
Yeah, but again, when I say stuff as possibly inflammatory as I maybe did, I should have been more careful. I get myself into this sort of trouble all the time. Anyway, I see you posting on here all the time. And you're right, it's just amazing how petulant this regime is. Of course, petulance and hostility is all they have left.
TC @ 78:
they still have a wargasm or two left in their under-sexed bodies...
TC @ 78:
Saying inflamatory stuff is not a bad thing. You were not "flaming." There is a huge difference. Sorry i came off as attacking you. I am very angry that the people who think in this country have been called all kinds of things from "feminazis" to complacent. We are real thinking people in this country, but our rights to redress of grievences in this nation have been chopped off at the knees.
Mr. Blade2 @ 45:
I refer to it as a decidership.
[...] [h/t to Crooks and Liars] [...]
Their technical difficulty being employees who have not been trained to honor basic civil rights? Where have we seen this before?
The oddest thing about this is that they are trying to filter comments by Pearl Jam!?! Those kind of comments should come as a surprise to No One! I would almost understand If at the CMAs, Travis Tritt or some other bumpkin did a 180 and called Cheney a fascist Puppeteer. They'd be scrambling for the dump button so fast they'd spill their Pabst. But Pearl Jam? A) their fanbase is very specific and they spend most nights preaching to the choir. and B) the choir is getting bigger everyday. This isn't big brother..this is Big Brother-in-Law... all he does is sleep on your couch, eat your food and talk through your favorite shows. What a bunch of Bell-ends.
xoites defends Constitution @ 80:
Nah it's quite alright. You can only hold me accountable for what you read that I've written. Anyway, I think we're in total agreement. Nah, I didn't take it as you attacking me. I just try and clarify what I'm saying more carefully there.
Doggiebobo @ 63:
Apparently nbrii.com does customer surveys and I wouldn't doubt that AT&T was once or is currently a client. But, I doubt whatever you send nbrii.com will catch up to At&T. Go straight to the mother ship.
Hal Sparks @ 84:
Any day I read a Pabst reference is a good day, IMO.
these corporations will do anything to help their corporate tax cutters
Jim @ 72:
Ah, the joys and rewards of censorship. Gotta protect the public from themselves ya know?
...
I'm sorry I just threw up in my mouth a little.
There is nothing wrong with your internet.
Do not attempt to adjust the content.
We are controlling transmission.
If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume.
If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper.
We will control the files.
We will control the servers.
We can scramble your files, make it useless.
We can direct you to the sites we choose, allow you to go only where we want you to go.
Sit quietly at your Net Device and we will control all that you see, hear, read and experience.
You are about to participate in a great adventure.
You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind of Big Brother to... AT&T.
--apologies to The Outer Limits.
AT&T is also fighting hard against Net Neutrality. They want to OWN the internet so that not only can they censor liberals at will, they can also prevent sites like C&L from reporting on it.
I hate to admit I use A Total (&) Tool for my landline and wireless 'net access. It's cheaper than the alternative (which is no different in their odious corporate practices) in this area.
This story is hardly surprising. How dare those artsy rock musicians voice criticism of our beloved Dear Leader? It was "cool" to be subversive & rawkin' in the 60s & 70s, but we all remember since the days of great St. Ronnie it's the corporate CEOs and white people with money that are truly cool! After all, who's more erudite, handsome and truly subversive than Rush "Oxycontin & Viagra cocktail" Limpboy or BilBo "Loofah" O'Reilly?
I heard about this earlier today, but watching that video - outrageous.
What's the business justification for this one, since AT&T's main concern is profits? "Hey, all those Pearl Jam fans will be really upset by those words about Bush! We better silence 'em!"
George Bush, leave this world alone/George Bush find yourself another home...
That's really a lame lyric, even by Pearl Jam's low standards. Nevertheless, it shouldn't have been censored. ATT are idiots if they think there are any Bush supporters out there.
This will never happen but Oasis should voice their dissatisfaction with AT&T over censuring a fellow rock group's lyrics. Oasis' "All around the world" lyrics are in the new AT&T commercial.
So let's see. AT&T will use a rock group's lyrics (an English Band for crying out loud) to benefit them and they turn around and censure another rock group's lyrics (an American Band) because they don't like what they say.
So they pay a foreign band big bucks to use their lyrics in a commercial and ban lyrics from a down home All American band. That sure is patriotic isn't it?
If Lolapalooza was performed in a public space paid for by American tax payers AT&T better not censure anyone. Not sure where this was held though.
@#*% (censored) ATT
Pearl Jammed lyrics.
The ironic thing is this site is probably carried by AT&T.
