You have to give gays respect. They spend more money on big fancy cars and trucks, condos and homes, clothes, partying, the latest gadgets and gizmo's what have you, if it wasn't for them our consumer economy would probably collapse.

TlalocW's picture

I would be happy about this if it were made by republican opponents of Giuliani because then it's republicans eating their own, perpetuating stereotypes, and using homosexuals as a wedge issue, but if it's from a liberal group then it's worse because they're perpetuating stereotypes and trying to get republicans to turn against each other using homophobia, and we should be better than that.

Jeffrey Lamkin's picture

This is sheer genius. My inner queen is TWINKLING for Giuliani!!

Agreed!

Brendan's picture

well i think it has to be satire. presuming this to be true, i think it is completely hysterical and comical. i don't find it perpetuating any stereotypes but the one that republicans hate gays and this is going to freak them out. i think anything to save america from a truely fascist president is a good thing.

Otay's picture

Good. This should destroy any support he had left from the religious right crowd. I actually want to see an extreme religious right nominee (like Brownlips or Huckabee) make it to the general election, as we Dems will probably have the election guaranteed on our behalf if that happens.

sharkcellar's picture

that gets three snaps and g-string

Alisa's picture

I find this playing into homophobic stereotypes. The fact is, Guiliani's support of gay rights is one of the only good things he's done. Now, if you want to contrast that with his whimpy backpedalling now, fine, but please don't attack him for being good on this issue!

Did a purse have to fall out of each of their mouths? I agree with TlalocW.

slacker_george's picture

What Alisa and TlalocW said.

Why would you attack a politician on one of the few things your agree with him? Do you want to drive all republican politicians into the christo-camp? I'll just file this under "troll-mock-support-video".

Steve's picture

C'mon! These guys aren't gay. How fake.

TIKI AL's picture

I like the "Ghouls for Ghouliani" ad much better.

While the republican party has done great things for bloodsuckers and ghouls, I don't think they are going to help the gay community any time soon.

1's picture

"I’ll just file this under “troll-mock-support-video."

And you'd be wrong.

Here's the Youtube channel that created the video:

http://www.youtube.com/user/gaysforgiuliani

Here's the Myspace of the owner of that Youtube channel:

"I began my political career as a right-wing conservative. In high school I published an on-line magazine called 'The Conservative Teen E-Zine' and was John McCain's Maryland Youth Coordinator, while he ran for President in 1999.

Republicanism wore off of me, once I spent time in the real world, and I proudly voted for Al Gore in 2000.

In 2003, I left New York and went to work for former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, in his presidential bid."

kuvasz's picture

why do i think the basic god-fearing heteros who make up the bulk of the GOP are going to gag on this?

Captain Kangaroo's picture

What a nice ad. It really shows that people are really greatful for Ruddy and what he has donw for the GLBT community. I think they should play it all over Ohio, Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Montana, Arizona, Missouri, Kentucky, South and North Carolina and Georgia. It should get him a lot of votes.

Absolutely! Too, too camp!

WashStateBlue's picture

Hey, anything that torpedoes Rudy is fine with me, I think he is the toughest adversary, cause he DOES have this illusion of moderation that makes some cross-overs favor him, especially if the DLC is successful in ramming Hillary down our throats.

Yeah, I do think it's kind of sad to hang the guy up for the one stance he takes that separates him from the Brownback Religious nut crowd...

Personally, I would rather to see the

"Pampered rich kids for Mitt".....

Cause, it just makes it SO much easier to avoid those nasty questions about "why aren't YOU serving in the great struggle with Islamic Fascism" when the parties candidate set the standard with 5 Boys skipping military service....

I think this would have been much more effective if they were everyday, blue collar, working men, who endorse Rudy and THEN say "as a gay man....."
I understand the swishy angle is to rile them up, but confusion would work just as well on these dolts.
Stereotypes don't represent the entire gay culture. Why give them more ammo.

Donnygull's picture

The DNC should produce an ad just like this. After the GOP has used such blatantly false campaigns , slurs, swiftboating, etc., that are while serious are hilarious. Its time to start slinging back at the Republitards,

L.A. Confidential's picture

This whole American obsession with sex is way out of control. And the corporate media has turned what was once reasonably sacred and no body else's business into a recipe for disaster.

We get more sex slammed into our faces on a hourly and daily basis in this country by the media then any other on earth yet we have one of the lowest reproduction rates on the planet.

Nothing you wrote indicates to me that the producer of the video supports Guliani. My "troll-mock-support-video" statement stands. We can and should be above anti-gay-baiting.

Tim's picture

OK, enough of the love fest here.

This ad is stupid, plays off of people's homophobia, and foolishly assumes that the South Carolina conservatives won't smell it as a fake a mile away.

It will only increase their hatred of gays (because it perpetuates stereotypes), and liberals and Democrats for sponsoring such an idiotic and hateful ad.

Have we become as craven as the Republicans in our quest to win at all costs?

Excuse me while I puke. I thought we were better than this.

Ex-Canuck's picture

This has got to be a Democratic ad, right? If not, the repukes are already beginning to eat their own. :>)

Krashkopf's picture

I agree, as a "straight but not narrow" guy who has a gay brother, I found the stereotyping in this ad very offensive.

Ali's picture

I just don't see how any gay person could be a republican. Course, I don't see how any straight person could either...

I actually thought the ad was a parody - it is pretty over the top on the flame side.

Robert S.'s picture

Um, Isn't it obvious that these are straight guys - most likely Republicans - who are both 1) anti-Giuliani and 2) anti-gay?

Seems pretty obvious to me. I mean, I don't want a President Giuliani President, but I'm also not going to applaud a couple of backwards frat boys who are playing stereotypical gays in a fake ad to turn Republicans off of voting for him.

Seems pretty obvious that's what's going on here. Don't believe me? What about the "gay guy" bragging that he's had 5 domestic partnerships? Seems like conservative fear-mongering against gay marriage to me. Watch it again and see what you think.

I'd be happy to be wrong, but I don't think so.

Johnny's picture

I think there is a problem here, they weren't just trying to smear Giuliani (using gays, but perhaps we don't mind it if hurts the Repug front-runner) they also took a shot at the idea of extending domestic partnership rights to gays. When the queen says "I've had 5 of them", the joke being a perpetuation of the idea that gay men have dozens of sex partners, and aren't capable of the monogamy required for marriage. I don't see how else that aspect of the clip can be characterized except as homophobia. And there are some liberals/Democrats who are homophobic. And you know, I have noticed an excessive eagerness on the part of a lot of liberals to play-up the idea the all Repug baddies are closet-cases. The Republican party does have a lot of closet-cases, and it is important to point out that hypocrisy. It's just that sometimes straight liberals seem to be overly eager to say they're all secretly gay, in a way that comes off as homophobic. Reminds me of the phrase "the devil is a sissy." No, the devil, or bad guy, is much more likely straight, because there's a lot more straight people in the world, and in the evil Repug party.

Tim's picture

At first I thought the ad was done by Republicans, but I have learned here that they are actually Democrats.

So let me put it in terms that the misguided Democrats who made the ad can understand: Would you do a "Blacks for Giuliani" or "Jews for Guiliani" using over-the-top stereotypes in order to peel off his support among racists and anti-semites?

I thought not.

No wonder why so many voters have turned independent.

I do not why a Democrat would make this ad. If you are a Democrat, and pro-gay rights, then you would prefer Giuliani over all the other Republican candidates for two reasons. First, you would rather have the pro-gay rights Republican than any of the others. Second, if he wins the primary, then an ad likes this could help him lose the general election to a better pro-gay rights Democrat.

Why would you want him to lose the Republican primary and then be stuck with an anti-gay Republican that might actually get elected in this country? I say this is an ad that helps the anti-gay Republican candidates, so Democrats should not promote it.

crazy train's picture

lol, funny clip. Nicole, if the "base" has any sophistication at all, they will embrace rudy.

Here's my thinking : Many repubs have condemned "the heathen gays" , but have been caught, well, to be blunt, having sex with other men. (I don't care what two people do (or three, or four ) in their private life )

Now take rudy. He is for the gays! Translation = he will do everything he can to undermine them ! See, you just have to think like a repug.

Robert S.'s picture

OK, so apparently it is for real:

http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendID=4158371&...

Basically, it's gay guys pretending to be swish to scare off Republicans off of voting for Giuliani. So they vote for who? I doubt it's going to scare them into voting for Clinton or Obama.

I appreciate the fact that some people who might vote for Giuliani might have to swallow against their homophobic impulses to do so - and maybe it doesn't hurt to rub that in their face - but what else is this going to accomplish?

Robert S.'s picture

Huh, crazytrain?

I ain't voting for Giuliani. Or any Republican. I'm saying what are these guys trying to do? Get Republicans to NOT vote for him? They'll only vote for someone MORE conservative. So it seems a pointless exercise as a political effort (unless you're a hyper conservative - then you should *love* this ad) or it's just a not particularly funny skit.

Chris's picture

I don't mind the stereotyping. I'm the first one to say "get over it" when somebody objects to not-PC humor. I just don't think it's a good idea to weaponize a candidate's support of gay issues.

Old Billy's picture

Yeah, I like what Gallery said at 23. I dont like how the ad is clearly perpetuating gay stereotypes to sandbag Guiliani and stop support for him from the rightwing. If someone wants to be flaming and fabulous because they like it, that's fine by me; but by perpetuating stereotypes (I've had "no-less-than five domestic partnerships) these people are taking it upon themselves to say they represent all gay people, and that's wrong.

Maybe that's more accurate in describing my reaction to this ad. I just think its a really bad way to play politics. Its kind of like using evangelical characterizations of Mormonism to take down Romney.

David E's picture

I don't get it, it seems like a homophobic attack ad. Why is this a good thing?

Andy K's picture

This is a spoof , much like "Baptists For Brownback".

This isn't funny. IMO, this is worse than the video of the DNC interns who dropped off the life preserver at Fred Thompson's exploratory committee hq.

Quite honestly, any GOP troll who accuses libs of bein' anti-gay on account of this video will be correct.

Hype-Jersey's picture

I'm embarrassed to see that ad. Why would anyone think this would be a good idea? It would only be appropriate for comedic content, for an audience who gets the parody. Wingers will only use it as more ammo against gays, regardless of who wins the election.

kerplunk's picture

Progressives might be catching on.

Exactly. If its just someone making a dumb joke to an audience who already knows its a joke, then maybe, maybe its excusable. Otherwise it's just plain offensive.

nohobear's picture

Lots of good comments here. Personally I find it offensive and self defeating. While it might be a somewhat effective weapon to club Giuliani with and peel away some of his conservative support, it also re-enforces the worst stereotypes that homophobes have of gays and lesbians. It would have been better to put up an ad with Rudy in one of his adventures in drag. That would have accomplished the same thing . That said, Rudy is such a slimy piece of shit, I can't get worked up about it either. Rethuglicans are ruthless when it comes to attack ads, I guess turnabout is fair play. But it would have been better to save this as a Giuliani weapon for later, if he becomes the republican nominee.

In my opinion, this is not something C&L should be perpetuating.

I think it's stupid. you can debate whether or not it was a good idea. But to make this video with people who are obvisouly pretending to speak candidly, but really aren't, and it's way obvious... Who does it help, either way? And then to list a site that isn't even really there. It's make anyone involved in making it look stupid, I don't know that it does anything more than that. It's so obviously fake that it isn't going to effect anyone's campaign in the slightest. Stupid.

hello's picture

Maybe I get it, maybe I don't, but I got a kick out of Michael Moore's Sodomobile and found this over-the-top satire to be pretty smirk-worthy as well.

Guiliani is a very dangerous candidate for all Americans, that much I do know.

wha?'s picture

I wonder what the motivation was of the makers of it. My hunch is that it's a republican who supports another candidate. Trying to smear Guliani and doing such a bad job at it, that they end up thowing gay stereotypes all over the place. to me they seemed like straight guys pretending to be gay. I might be wrong about all of this, but if I'm not, i think that's out of line. Swiftboat tactics are wrong no matter who does them. There is plenty of true stuff that will prevent guliani from being president. Why make a lie. satire is fine, but this wasn't satire. If it was it was poorly done. Stupid and irresponsible.

On the oher hand, if this really is a few gay guys who support giuliani...my apologies. you should put a site up that you pretend is there. It makes you look stupid to not have one.

hello's picture

wha:

I can't disagree with anything you said at 66. I doubt that even if the actors are gay, however that they were making any actual attempt to seriously support Guiliani in this video. Therein lies the satire.

I did enjoy the campiness about it.

Maybe you're right. I'm being too cynical. I guess what I'm saying is that if it's just a few gay guys having fun, I don't have a problem with it at all. My thinking it's not funny is just my opinion, and that's ok. But if it's straight guys, pretending to be gay, pretending to support giuliani, I think that's wrong.

As much as I am critical of it I'm still sitiing here wondering who did it. Jokes on me I guess. but still, does anyone know who did it? It's killing me to know.

hello's picture

Nah, critical/cynical thinking is important. I can't tell you how often the mainstream media can still throw a curve on my perceptions as well.

At least we both know we're in the right place to find a few answers out now and then. C&L, I mean.

What advice are the supporters of this alleged irony going to give to the young gays in South Carolina already struggling with homophobia once this advertisement escalates it even further? When you're 16 and queer in some of these red state communities, political irony pales into insignificance when you're worried if your parents will still love you or if you'll be able to walk the streets without getting your head kicked in.

Note the anti-Giuliani clips that are "favorites". Leaves little doubt in my mind that they're comin' from the left- or, possibly, Romney's campaign. I'll stick with "the left"- certainly after perusin' the MySpace page linked at the YouTube page:

Most spoof sites let on that they are, indeed, spoofs. Here's an example- Baptists For Brownback:

http://baptistsforbrown2008.wordpress.com/

Now that's funny stuff! If it ain't clear to ya, check out all the links. If it still ain't clear, search the group at Wikipedia.

But back to the gfg video. It's ill conceived, poorly made and sophomoric. Even if the makers are gay, their "swishiness" is an ott put-on, and, frankly, degradin' to the GLBT community, imo.

wha?'s picture

Yeah, it's good stuff. The blogosphere is doing a great thing. I don't care how people on the right, and in the established media smear it... It gives anyone who wants one, a voice. Let's all imagine, in this vein, what "blacks for giuliani" might look like: Lessee, how about a pregnant woman on welfare, surrounded by 10 kids? Or maybe "hispanics for giuliani" ... featuring an HIV positive rapist going on about how Rudie's made his life better. I don't think these would fly. Why is it that gays are still okay to stereotype? Getting political mileage out of hatred for gays, or blacks (it DOES exist), or jews, or hispanics, or muslims ... that ain't progress. Some Democrat has decided that to beat the shameful republicans, one must become like them. Shame all around.

I think we have enough goods on Rudie without having to perpetuate hatred of gays.

Tom, I hear yah. Rydy doesn't stand a chance. Did you see "none of the above" is sill polling higher than any other candidate on the republican side? the left doesn't need this "help". And i think it does compare to the Swift Boating of John Kerry. I hated that, and this is the same kind of thing. You can't win a pissing contest with a skunk. I don't think the dems need to stoop to this level to win. Honesty and action seem to be doing fine.

Now these guys have every right to make this. It's a free country and everyone gets a voice on the web. But if it was done to make giuliani look bad, I think it's politically irrisponsible. Not that they don't have the right to do it, but more that it was kind of a dumb idea. It only stands to backfire, not to mention all of the gay stereotypes they are perpetuating.

I still kinda think it could be striaght guys pretending to be gay, pretending to support Giuliani. They have a myspace account, but they refference a web-site at the end of the video that doesn't exist. Why not link to the myspace page? I think it looks fishy.

Yeah, that's what that video made me think. Plus, gay men would never dress that badly. Hell, sane people would never dress that badly.

That's a good point, sptdonkey. The one guy is dressed more like a Williamsburg hipster than a gay guy.

Rudy is a fucking pig, no matter how you slice it. So what that he's a cross-dresser who fled to a gay couple's apartment after he publicly dumped his second wife (the one who was not his cousin). The fact that he has personal feelings of vague decency in regards to gay people (if not to his own family) doesn't mitigate the fact that he is a major, raging asshole on every other issue that matters to this country or planet.
