Colbert: Political Correctness vs. Actual Correctness

colbert-word-clarity.jpg Stephen examines Rudy Giuliani's terror rhetoric and asks the question: Should we let America's Mayor choose America's language?

"Rudy has used the words 'Islamic terrorism' so many times that the phrase 'September 11th' is getting jealous."

Frist?

Now that is well done satire. I wonder how many audience members knew what the '632 AD' label meant? It was the year of the founder of Islam's death. Yes, Mohammed was his name.

Stephen's hilarious as always but overall this clip made me feel really depressed when I started thinking about how many people in this country wouldn't be able to understand Stephen's bumper sticker and would just buy into that 'redderrick'.

Clarity, "War on Error"...this is so right on. One of Colbert's best. How can this guy make me angry, depressed, amused, and hopeful all from one bizarre satire skit?

I think the term would be "Redder Neck"

and that's the word.

this is off-topic, but links to send to the site for new articles wasn't working for me. so check out the Iraq War Czar mention how reinstating the draft has always been on the table for ideas to control the stress on our over-extended troop missions!

Colbert's always on top of his game. Classic stuff

It's possible....Did you ever think about how the 35%ers minds work?
Like the Nazi's, they will have trouble admitting to themselves that they've come this far. They will not allow their friends and parents to know that they were willing to give up individual freedom and power for the dictates of order and unseen leaders. They can't admit to being manipulated. Being a follower. To accepting the NEOCON Wave as a way of life. They won't admit to participating in this madness. They will keep this and all their other misgivings a secret. They can't admit to their wrongness, to helping destroy their own country.

Well, I agree, but only to an extent as far as blame is concerned. One cannot blame the 35%'ers so heavily as to make them complicit to destroying the country. They were manipulated, and we who never believed Bush to begin with sometimes forget that his war campaign was, in fact, very artistically implemented; with ties to religion, ties to the Texan way of life, and with very formidable scare tactics. He really pulled a large crowd at first, and hooked them by the heart. I cannot agree to calling scared people complicit to the destruction of our country, but I do call it sad that they can't let go of their naivete by now. There IS a difference between republican citizens and the Repugnican Powerful... no citizen made the laws that enable domestic spying, no citizen introduced the death of Habeus Corpus (and mind you, none of it was worded that way when it was even enacted). Wow, I never dreamed of the day that I would be standing up for the Republican point of view.. tells you exactly how bad things are 'round here.

I had a friend come over to visit last summer and the Colbert Report came on. My friend had never seen it before and didn't realize it wasn't a "real" news show.

It was maybe half-way through the show when I noticed the look on his face and realized why he look so confused. It was priceless!

When I told him what he was watching he was really relieved. He said he couldn't figure out why everybody was laughing at the news.

I guess in the interest of "clarity" it should be pointed out that "taking military action against" means the same thing as "going to war with". There are people who think that we can take military action against Iran without going to war with Iran. There are people who seem to believe that we can bomb Iran, or cross their border with troops to destroy one of their bases without starting a war. They believe that Iran won't respond because we were just taking a military action, not committing an act of war. So next time you hear a politician or TV personality talking about some kind military action against Iran, they're really saying we need to go to war with Iran. That is correctness.

I really frickin' hate when people are so stupid to think that Rudy Giuliani is some kind of frickin' GENIUS because he happened to be mayor during 9-11, (HIS WATCH)... Whoever was mayor at the time, would have been thought of as a genius... people would have rallied around ANYONE... if HITLER were mayor, people would have said he was a genius.

But go ask the people that worked for Rudy, that know him BEST: police, fire, rescue, and see what they think about him... or go ask those with mafia connections that worked for him.

Bravo, Stephen! Spot on.

I think the majority of them (I refer to them as the willfully ignorant) were willingly manipulated. They choose to believe the ridiculous and rationalize whatever they want to believe. They can disagree with some of Kerry’s political stances for instance, but to swallow the swift boat lies makes them an accomplice. They can disagree with proposals to tackle the global climate change, but to totally dismiss the overwhelming scientific consensus that man is influencing the problem is willfully ignorant. They can disagree with the concept of hate crimes legislation, but to state that adding sexual orientation to existing laws would make it illegal for preachers to condemn gays is a blatant lie. And a hundred other examples from taxes to stem cell research.

I believe in responsibility, and I think the 35%ers and culpable in major damage to this country and the world.

Oh yeah, the reason I came here to comment. I thought this was one of Colbert's better "The Word's".

Three letters:

Where laughter melds with infuriation.

Priceless

well said...but the truth of the matter is..there will always be some crazy repubs..(like the skin heads..aka..nazis) left .They actually believe Preznit Boosh and think that he is right....straight down the line...tunnel vision. And that percent of the population is a rather substantial number overall. The rest were "Had" as I call it.......yep...they wil return...but not for a long while..........unless they steal another election.

The Daily Show and The Colbert Report: lonely atolls of truth in a sea of media lies.

Metaphor-off anyone?

I look at Rudy and I see a mediocre low-level political functionary out to use the media to it's best purposes - to promote him far beyond his level of competence.

You would think Rudy himself had been going in and out of the burning buildings rescuing people, Rudy himself had been digging through the rubble day by day trying to find survivors, and Rudy himself was traveling to Afghanistan trying to track down bin Laden with a team of delta force operatives. No word from the MSM that firefighters died because of the decisions he made.

Rudy was already at this level of incompetence as a mayor. If I were responsible for faulty radio equipment supplied to the people who work under me, and 100s of them died as a result, I would rightfully be fired. With a half-assed media, Rudy gets promoted to godhood.

and yes I do consider them responsible for the condition of the country and our reputation around the world. With all the Bullshit propoganda that they spewed for the last (almost)7 years...I'm surprised that there hasn't been more of a public uprising.Perhaps the blogosphere as replaced marching in the streets.

your absolutley right......while Mayor......if he's not responsible for not getting or upgrading those radios....who is?.......but saint rudy gets promoted....on the bright side.....he will be easy to defeat, assuming the repub,s take him in the primaries.Which I seriously doubt.

funny how the right always makes saints out of their candidates.....very weird....ok now go say 3 hail mary's and 3 our fathers...and pray to saint Gulliani...for guidance

Well, I have to admit I've been had; Willful Ignorance is one of my worst pet peeves (use the term all the time), and you really do have quite a point, both of you. I am just too sympathetic to simple human flaws; just looking at cars on the road when there's a cop right behind them you see how dumb ppl can be when they're scared, lol. But I guess its true -- these ppl are willfully ignorant, and I really shouldn't stand up for them all that much. Just thinking about it now puts images of BillO-supporters in my head. *cries* my bad, ppl.

The 35%ers can only see things in black and white. You're with us or you're not. Their loyalty is blind to injustice, corruption and greed. The simple fact is that many of them have been brainwashed by Fox News. They are afraid. I live in a rural red part of my state and I cannot believe how many "smart" people still watch and BELIEVE Fox news. Mindboggling...and sad.

A liberal weakness, and a liberal strength. We realize the world is complex, and often there are no perfect solutions to difficult problems. The willfully ignorant often like to see the world as black and white, you're either with us or against us.

Raindrops in a hurricane of lies?

"They don't see the threat," he derides the Democrats wherever he goes, ridiculing even their adjectives. "During the Democratic debates, I couldn't find one of them that ever mentioned the words 'Islamic terrorist'—none of them," he contends. "If you can't say the words 'Islamic terrorists,' then you have a hard time figuring out who is our biggest enemy in the world."

In fact, during the three Democratic debates, the candidates referred to "terrorism," "terrorists," or "terror" 24 times—only the modifier was missing, though John Edwards did warn in June that "radical Islam" could take over in Pakistan. By focusing on "radical Islam" as opposed to "Islamic terrorism," the Democrats may actually be avoiding any suggestion that America is engaged in a war against Islam—and even Giuliani would concede that Osama bin Laden is a perversion of Islam. Indeed, though Giuliani is claiming that he's been "studying" Islamic terrorism since 1975, a search of Giuliani news stories and databases reveals that the first time he was cited using the term was in his May 2004 testimony before the 9/11 Commission: He made a passing reference to the sarin-gas drill and said it simulated an "Islamic terrorist attack." If the use of this term is a measure of a leader's understanding of the threat, what does it say about Giuliani's own decade of denial that he never used it in the '90s, when he was the mayor of the only American city to have experienced one?

We should specifically avoid talking about christian terrorists who kill doctors and bomb clinics. TABOO for Republicans. Language for Republicans is all about what they wish to DENY.

LOVE you Colbert. And I'm not even gay.
You are so on, so on. Unbelieveble.
Does the bible-belt, the belt-way, and the rest of red-America have access to Comedy Central? After 6 years of the Daily Show and the Colbert show, it is inconcievable to me how these people continue to live in denial, in 'the matrix'. Jon and Colbert are spoon feeding us, like infantile toddlers, and these zombies can't see the illusion for what it is?!?!?!? A real low mark for the 'intelligence', or 'specialness' of human beings.

Colbear is on FIRE.

Excellent. I'd say he makes Giuliani look like a damn fool, except Giuliani is the one making himself look like a damn fool. SC is just pointing it out.

When asked by Barbara Walters on the night of September 11, 2001 if the 9/11 attacks were carried out by forces within the U.S., 2008 presidential candidate and then senate intelligence committee member John Edwards becomes evasive and refuses to answer the question, after having spoken to CIA director George Tenet earlier that day.

http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/august2007/100807_b_edwards.htm

look at this creepy Edwards smiling on 9-11 when he gets asked if "we" are sure whether or not it is a foreign or domestic act of terror, after he'd just met with the head of the CIA

his response, "i can't answer that question"

send him to iraq, one way

All kidding aside, as a former mayor, that's it, mayor, what are Guiliani's qualifications to be president? Education? Economic successes or failures? Foreign policy experience? It's time America elected the best and most qualified as well as the one with the highest integrity and ethics for this office.
