Gonzo Goes To Baghdad!

gonzo.jpg Via Talk Left:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is in Baghdad.

The Justice Department said that Gonzales arrived in Baghdad on Saturday for his third trip to Iraq to meet with department officials who have been there to help fashion the country's legal system.

Just what does the Department of Justice do in Baghdad? Here's the DOJ's 2006 press release outlining its role:

The Department of Justice's law enforcement components provide special investigative training and assistance to Iraqi law enforcement, including the following:

  • The Major Crimes Task Force (MCTF) routinely investigates high-profile cases involving assassinations of government officials, prisoner-detainee abuses and civil rights violations, and other instances of violent crime in Baghdad and other regions of the country. The MCTF is composed of special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) who provide managerial supervision for, and technical assistance to, highly trained Iraqi investigators. so totally absurd, that place is so far out of control. though i am frieghtend to think of what sort of legal system gonzo would impose give a blank palette.

That oughta help.

He should have stayed home and investigated the Bush administration. Oh, i'm sorry, that is who he is trying to protect and divert attention away from.

Or not...forgot to refresh my page....Gonzo is running to Iraq for shelter....talk about irony...I guess the surge is working!!

Why the hell would you ask the most incompetent member of an exceedingly incompetent administration to help you?

Bit NOLA's picture

Only the Bush team would use Iraq to hide the U. S. Attorney General. Wouldn't want him to shoot his stupid mouth off again. Not in D. C. anyway.

Government as Theater of the Absurd.

Now all we need is for Gonzo to smear his own feces on a wall in Baghdad and call it art.

Snowball's picture

So the Iraqi government seems to have learned about human rights from Saddam, why shouldn't they also want to learn about justice from Gonzales? At least their consistent about what kind of role models they choose.

Snowball's picture

oops: ^they're

Carmikl's picture

I would think that the kangaroo court system currently in place in Iraqi was Gonzo's idea. He's probably just there to observe and learn from their interrogation techniques.

Just add Gonzales to the list of incompetent cronies sent to Iraq by the Bush administration:

Jay Hallen, Iraqi Stock Exchange / Coalition Provisional Authority. Jay Hallen, aged 24, was tapped by Jim O'Beirne to reopen the Iraqi stock exchange, despite having no background in finance.

James Haveman, Iraqi Health Care System / Coalition Provisional Authority. James Haveman, a 60-year-old social worker, was tapped to restructure Iraq's health care system despite the fact that he was largely unknown among international health experts. (He started an anti-smoking campaign!)

Bernard Kerik, Iraqi Police Forces / Coalition Provisional Authority. "In May 2003, a team of law enforcement experts from the Justice Department concluded that more than 6,600 foreign advisers were needed to help rehabilitate Iraq's police forces. The White House dispatched just one: Bernie Kerik...

Carmikl @ 12:

Chances are that Gonzo has already forgotten where he is and how he got there.

No, the real problem is that Gonzo knows exactly where he is (in Bush's back pocket), and how he got there (by keeping his lips firmly planted on Bush's butt). I wonder if he worries about whether his loyalty will pay in the end? I wonder if he ever worries that he might not get the Scooter treatment as a reward should he ever need it?

And I'm saying - more of our tax dollars hard at work. There is absolutely no reason for that little weasel to go to Bagdhad - except to change the subject with the short attention span MSM and the sheeple.

Oh, that's just great! [deleted]

Carmikl's picture

Well Bush is afraid to fire him, because he might talk or write a tell all book. He won't quit, so why not send him to Baghdad. The real question is, did they give him a flack jacket and helmet?

Nice limerick! Very creative!

Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's picture

Gonzo is in Iraq acting as an adviser to a private contractor, selected by the White House on a no-bid basis, tasked to help Iraq build an independent judiciary.

Tom (Not Tom)'s picture

Just what Iraq needs - another Bush flunkie trying to "help".

myiq2xu's picture

Fredo should be real nervous. They assigned Al Neri to be his bodyguard.

Seriously, I wouldn't put it past Cheney to figure out that he could shut Gonzo up permanently and turn him into a martyr at the same time.

Cheney shot a guy in the face, and that guy was a friend!

Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's picture

In the spirit of full disclosure, I made @ 32 up, fully inspired by the fact that nothing is beyond the realm of possibility--and irony--under the Bush regime.

Mark Richards's picture

He's going to IRAQ for training. Upon his return he will reform the "Justice" system so that it operates just as it does over there.

Yellowbird's picture

Dubai

That is the answer.

Gonzo is there to check on their retirement assets in Dubai.

To see if the construction is finished so they can duck out of further responsibility.

EvilPoet's picture

This is just another example of BushCo's continuing effort to corner the irony market.

Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's picture

Mark Richards @ 36:

He's going to IRAQ for training. Upon his return he will reform the "Justice" system so that it operates just as it does over there.

Sadly, no longer an accurate observation. Gonzo is not going for training; he's going to train...

Ruthless People's picture

Gonzo is there to lay a foundation of incompetence, deceit, cronyism, and corruption for the new Iraqi legal system that has been the MO of the Bush DOJ.

Yea, this is going to work out juuuuust fine.

kaT's picture

OMG! He's going to fashion Iraq's Justice Department after his own!

Gonzo in Iraq to teach them the art of Bull-Shiite.

Isn't that like sending Homer Simpson to run their nuclear powerplant?

Truly Equal's picture

He can stay in Iraq too. I'm Latin and we don't need this disgrace representing us in government.

Inca Garcilaso de la Vega's picture

Slinky the Wonder Ferret @ 46:

Isn't that like sending Homer Simpson to run their nuclear powerplant?

lol! Actually, the chances of Homer succeeding as a nuclear powerplant operator are much greater than that of Gonzo, as Attorney General--as has been made patently clear by his record.

StirFry's picture

Its a bullshit trip. What could he possibly bring to the table there? Its PR horse shit.
If its safe enough for Gonzo, its safe enough for you. the surge is working.

Da Spyda's picture

Couldn't Gonzo be considered a "weapon of mass destruction"?

I mean look what he's done to the DOJ.

Maybe he's filming that new Ivan Reitman comedy, "Gonzo in the Green Zone."

Ex-Canuck's picture

Hope the insurgents capture gonzo, and show him, and his boss, a little respect by questioning him without using "torture" - but questioning him to the limit that he has allowed the US to do by his famed "Torture Letter". With any luck....

Is Gonzo going to the marketplace? It is as hot as Texas in Baghdad. Maybe Bush will tell to take a stroll down main street and America's greatest AG (according to Cheney) will reply "Yes'um mr bush".

Gonzo had his Stasi made easy workbook under his arm

Blue Buddha's picture

He's fucking things up over there so that it can be just as fucked up over here... or something like that.

To improve their legal system?!

Are you SURE you haven't actually been reading "The Onion"? This is way too funny to be true...

moonsha's picture

They are probably going to try to get Maliki out of power, so they need Gonzales to go over there to make it appear like they were crossing all T's and dotting I's. Then, a story will come out about how Maliki is not following the Iraqi Constitution and undermining the parliament. No matter what the reason all you can expect from this administration is more bullshit.

Carmikl's picture

They're filming Gonzo in Baghdad. A new sitcom for the fall season. I'm sorry folks this is just funny to take seriously.

King of Mean's picture

They are in good hands... Gonzo has an excellent grasp of the law. I'm confident if anyone can turn Iraq around in a short time, like maybe a week, it will be Gonzo. They may as well start the troops withdrawal right now... they won't be needed much longer with Gonzo in charge.

Biggus Diggus's picture

Just when you didn't think it could get any more surreal! I think they sent him out there to give him credibility and to make it seem like he knows what he's doing.

Kay-tee's picture

Hey! This is a great time for the "terrorists" to nuke Washington! Dick is in Wyoming, George is headed back to the ranch, Gonzo is in Baghdad. I'm sure Condi is headed out of Dodge, along with other Bush cronies. When cats are away the mice will play!

The Oracle's picture

Getting legal advice from Alberto Gonzales would be like getting lectured on medical ethics by Dr. Mengele.

Nick's picture

'to meet with department officials who have been there to help fashion the country’s legal system.'

hahahahahahahahahahaha!

Oh my God, you are killing me with these! *wipes away tears of laughter*

The Economist referred to him as Bush's flunky, and quoted people close to him as saying he was neither particularly bright or a good lawyer. Good to know he's the AG.

StCyrlyMe's picture

This bastard can't even take care of the business at home. What is he going to Bagdad for?

Tommie27's picture

Gonzo in Baghdad!!! Won't be long before THE WAR IS WON--HURRAY--GOOD JOB GONZO!!!

Pyed Typer's picture

So, Gonzo is now at a place where he can't possibly f*ck up anything more than it has been already, and there are hopes that he might one day forget to wear his body amour, thereby solving some of the DOJ's problems.

cleo's picture

Gonzo is going shopping. He heard that you can get really cheap rugs in Baghdad. I think that it's to get him out of the country. We and the Constitution can only hope that he is fleeing the U.S. never to return.

Proud American's picture

Karl ROVE has just announced his RESIGNATION effective end of AUGUST.

If GONZALES has any sense left he would follow and resign himself and stay clear when the WE THE PEOPLE demand the IMPEACHMENT of illigitimate PreZ and Veep.

Mike Nilsen's picture

Maybe the sent Gonzo over there to get killed. They'll announce that he was tragically killed in a roadside bombing (blaming Iran for it as additional gravy). They'll get rid of a major embarrassment and maybe make him a sympathetic figure, as well. Then Congress will appoint Bush's chosen successor (after a long delay, of course) "out of respect" for the dear, departed Alberto.

sofla's picture

You she, whir sending Gonzo to give the Iraqis some of that freedom we promished them... hehehe.

Loonie's picture

What nauseating irony.

Gonzales is helping the Iraqis with their legal system? Did I hear that right?

It means the leader of Iraq will learn how to rig elections to remain in power. He'll be allowed to spy on Iraqi citizens on any pretense in the name of fighting terrorists, no matter what the law says. He'll be able to fire any government attorney who pursues cases on merit instead of politics, and his legal advisers will be instructed to lie to the Iraqi Parliament if it asks them questions that embarrass the leader. Under the new Iraqi legal system impeachment will be impossible, even for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Sort of the same as it was under Saddam Hussein, just a little less violent maybe.

Jack Damage's picture

The Attorney General of the U.S.... in Baghdad.... Umm yea...
THAT MAKES SENSE........NOT!!!! JD

bill's picture

Can they make him the Iraqi Attorney General and let him stay in Baghdad? The bush crime family members travel all over the world on US taxpayers dollars. Condilesbian spend more time overseas shopping for shoes than she does in Washington.

Carmikl's picture

Maybe Rove resigned because the penalty for not resigning on queue is a trip to Baghdad. Maybe Rove's next assignment was to be improving Nouri al Maliki's image if he didn't leave now.

Limp-Dick Blimpaugh's picture

We can only hope that Gonzo will be captured and tortured too.

Molly's picture

Now you're talkin'. This is a place our boy can really shine. Feel right at home you might say. Gonzo for a longer stronger America.
