How many U.S. Attorneys were fired?

It’s been a little while, but the last time we checked in with the purge scandal, about a month ago, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) asked the AG how many U.S. Attorneys he’d fired during his tenure. He said he didn’t know.

After acknowledging the nine we know about from the purge, Gonzales said, “I’m not aware, sitting here today, of any other U.S. Attorney who was asked to leave — except there were some instances people were asked to leave, quite frankly, because there was legitimate cause.” (Given that he’d just named nine other U.S. Attorneys who’d been fired, it sounded like he was conceding that they’d been fired for illegitimate causes.)

He added, “Senator, there may have been others [fired prosecutors]. I would be happy to get back to you with that kind of information about who has left. But I don’t know the answer to your question. But I can certainly find out.”

The good news is, Feinstein has finally heard back from the Justice Department. The bad news is, DoJ officials have decided not to cooperate with the request.

The one that should be fired is still the AG. No justice here or there.

Why is that man still the AG of the U. S.?

OK. Let me get this correct. ANY government agency, no matter how big how small, if they decide they don't want to answer any member of congress' questions they don't have to. Congress, as far as the bush administration's departments, and make no mistake bush thinks these government departments belongs to him, can ignore congress if they want to.

So congress can just take a vacation the rest of bush's term because this administration is not going to do anything they ask.

Feinstein lacks the integrity to pursue the matter.

It's not simply that she is gutless. Which she is. It's far worse than that.

She is a republican at heart.

Feinstein? What's she gonna do about it? Keep on yipping at their feet, Diane.

How is it good news to hear back from the DoJ? They will be as uncooperative as possible.

I wish they would stop calling it the Justice Department. It stopped being anything about justice as soon as Rove turned his slimy machinations its way, aided and abetted by Alberto the Toad, with the dimwitted nodding of the head of one Little Boots squatting in the Oval Office.

What a farce. What a ridiculous pathetic farce this country's "leadership" has become.

Yes. We'd be better off without them. Less wasted money.

President Bush can fail in his duty to himself, his country, and his God, by becoming “ex-president” Bush or he can become “President-for-Life” Bush: the conqueror of Iraq, who brings sense to the Congress and sanity to the Supreme Court. Then who would be able to stop Bush from emulating Augustus Caesar and becoming ruler of the world? For only an America united under one ruler has the power to save humanity from the threat of a new Dark Age wrought by terrorists armed with nuclear weapons.

I wonder what O'Reilly would say. Oh yes, nothing.

Actually this one wasn't too hard to see coming. Alberto (showing that he actually might be a lawyer and not just play one in Washington, D.C.) carefully said they were fired [for cause]. The DoJ can say this is a confidential personnel matter with a pretty clean conscience.

If anybody there had a conscience...

this administration makes the US look like a fucking joke. a really dumb joke.
and as it goes on and on and on it puts you to sleep because it the most boring joke you
ever heard. the characters are boring twits. they only got to their position because the culture they serve is boring. their vision is boring.

i know some people feel outrage. i feel outrage too but it's the kind of outrage
that makes me bored.

So I just finished reading TPM Muckraker and apparently Mr.Bush has been issued a letter today from MrLeahy, that a chat is needed, as apparently it is time for the WH to be more helpful BASED ON ACCUMULATED EVIDENCE OF THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE...( including an interesting piece about ROVE and a meeting 2 monthes ago with JD officials...hmmm)..... I do not think this is over ,not by a long shot....

Also a lawyer friend pointed something out to me- that Rove had to QUIT- because Bush can not pardon him if he is still employed- Anyone else know if that is true?

IANAL, but I don't think it's true. He can pardon him for any crimes committed to date. He cannot pardon him for crimes that has yet to commit. It could be that by getting Rove out of the WH it makes it easier for Bush to issue a blanket pardon - (for any and all crimes that he may have committed prior to the date of the pardon). Of course, then you're back to Ford's view that to accept a pardon one is admitting guilt.

In the interest in demonstrating ability from the "left" to not take things out of context...

I think Gonzales only motioned toward firing attorneys for "quite frankly" legitimate reasons as an indicator that his department is not in the business of firing attorneys for less than legitimate reasons.

I would give that to most anybody, but of course, no one should lose sight of the fact that Gonzales is a liar and he is only taking that position because he has to.

What about it did bother me is that he was not willing to even offer an estimated number of non-scandal firings in the interest of satisfying a congressional question... His willingness to point out that there had *been* others (for "quite frankly" legitimate reasons) is damning. In saying that, he has admitted that there probably others, which makes one wonder why he can't even seem to hazard a guess at his own turnover statistics. It's as bad as a Chinese manufacturing factory getting an audit...

The scheme was a criminal conspiracy under 18 USC 601 et.seq. to use AUSA's for political benefit, to the detriment of democrats, and the benefit of republicans.

Neither the appointment power, nor the pardoning power, may be used for a corrupt purpose. You cannot fire them for refusing to do a thing which would be a crime if it were done, even using an "absolute" power.

The DOJ has become the DORC (Department of Republican Crimes).

I read somewhere that claimed there are 25% vacancies in the States regional AG jobs,
which could mean they are being filled by temps (which dont require approval by the Senate),
or truly empty because nobody wants to the jobs under this regime.

Not to worry. I'm sure Feinstein will figure out a way to drop the ball in a way that gives maximum aid and comfort to the fascists. She's pretty good at that.

What concerns me even more than the attorneys who were fired for not toeing the "Bushie" line - just exactly what did the rest of the attorneys do who kept their jobs? Somebody should be checking to see what level of string pulling is happening at the White House on the puppet attorneys who remain on the job. That may be where the real trouble lies.
