Misleading Letter Reveals New RNC Voting Hackery

Via TPM Muckraker:

What 83 year-old William Sidwell of Queen City, Missouri found in his mailbox last week scared him. It was a letter from the Republican National Committee, but it seemed to bear grave news: "Our records show that you registered as a member of our Party in Schuyler County, MO," the letter said. "But a recent audit of your Party affiliation turned up some irregularities."

Audit? Irregularities? Was he in trouble? Were they threatening him? Sidwell went immediately to his ask his son, Dennis, a licensed public accountant, for advice. You can see the letter, and the accompanying "Voter Registration Verification and Audit Form," right here. Particularly puzzling to the both of them, Dennis told me, is that his father is a life-long Democrat.

The letter, it turns out, is just a misleading pitch for a contribution to the RNC -- one of the "irregularities" cited in the letter is that "I cannot find a record of you taking a single action in support of the Republican Party -- not locally, not nationally!" A contribution, the letter suggests, would help set the record straight.

The letter is signed by Bill Steiner, the director of the RNC's Office of Strategic Information, a title Steiner assumed at the end of July. His responsibilities "include managing the RNC’s national voter file and Voter Vault, the committee’s highly touted micro-targeting operation," Roll Call reported last month. And indeed, the voter "audit" requests detailed information about the voter's voting history and current opinions on the 2008 presidential race. Read more...

this is chilling...

but really, here is a guideline--no, an imperative to live by:

if you ever receive a letter from the RNC just simply throw it away. you don't even need to open it.

RNC letter instructions:
step a: take from mailbox
step b: drop in trash.

emails, phonecalls, etc. should all be treated with the same disrespect.

but, god, i wish the RNC would call me, i'd LUV to "talk" to them.

I used to work on the Hill during the Clinton admin and I was sincerely disturbed at the tactics of some of these people. They would call seniors in my district, tell them that the Clinton health care plan wouldn't cover any doctor visits, and then transfer them to me to complain to their Senator. So I ended up talking to hundreds of freaked out seniors who thought that they would be losing their prescription and doctor coverage. It made me want to scream that these defenseless people were being treated so poorly. We should have some kind of "truth in government' clause somewhere to stop these asshats taking advantage of the little people.

Jesus, no wonder they're not raising any money these days over at the RNC. Nice pitch! What's next - give the GOP money or we'll break your legs?

Totally ridiculous and pathetically desperate!

Is the purpose to make people think they have to pay to get on the voting rolls, or to falsely sign up new Republicans?

If it's the former, I would send the letter to the local attorney general.

I like the choices under the 'issues most important to you in the upcoming elections'.

Interesting, but by no means surprising, that some of the most important issues embraced by the left and chastised by the right are not included in the list...

health care (how could that not be on the list???)
global warming
Iraq War (not as warm and fuzzy as 'War on Terror')
Federal Deficit (again, not as warm and fuzzy at 'Federal Budget')
civil rights
warrantless wiretapping
separation of church and state

Those are just the ones that come to mind, I'm sure you can think of more.

And what about 'Making Tax Cuts Permanent'? How many people feel this is one of the most important issues facing our government today?

Anyone who fills out one of these forms with their personal information is a certifiable moron. I guess that's why it works so well for the RNC.

How can a political party have so little integrity? What, they can't come by voters honestly anymore?

Oh, wait, that's right -- the Republican party and honesty parted ways many years ago.

I have a question about mail that is delivered that comes with a "postage will be paid by" envelope. If I attach it to a 10 pound box of rocks, and drop that in the mail, will the post office deliver it? Would the republicans have to pay a big postage due bill once it was delivered? Just kind of wondering....

Aon213's picture

Truly sickening. This gentleman turned to his son and an accountant to figure out what to do, ergo, many other seniors (with all respect) would very well be intimidated (or tricked if you will) into tediously answering everything (god knows what happens if it isn't good enough) and donating to boot.

This is not a matter of it being legal or illigal! So lets not drag into that kind of discussion, it's immoral and unethical and people should be held accountable for this stuff.

Well, I'd rather it be Hillary and Bill than Guiliani and ...anyone.
Besides, did you notice how comfortable the Repugs now are calling the Presidency "The Throne!!!"

Be afraid.
I think the Dems out to get out a public service announcement exposing this (and the other tricks they will come up with between now and election day) so that the public gets just as pissed off as I am right now!

The Dems would win by a landslide.

I like the part about limited government, fiscal responsibility etc. being right in tune with Republican values. Yup, the government just keps getting smaller. Well, I guess it can since due to technology they need fewer and fewer people to spy on citizens. That, and getting citizens to spy on each other also saves on a lot of bureuacratic build-up. And yup, those Republicans have been so fiscally conservative these last years.

I actually laughed out loud at that part.

Many have tried so hard to bring the truth forward and continue to try hard
to save our United States of America.

The only explanation for every bizzare dark thing that has happened since Bush took office...
In addition to running our foreign policy, The dark side of the CIA and the dark side of dual citizenship thinktanks has also been allowed to run this country's domestic policies. Including our media.

But until there is Justice for all the criminal deeds that have occured in 1963-2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007, the good people and whistleblowers of the United States will keep exposing EVERY act and lie.

We care. Millions of us do.
Thats why we have put all put it all on the line since 2000.
Including our careers.

Government whistleblowers, including US Attorneys.

Our only hope at this point is that Patriotic Democrats and Republicans in Congress will finally join together after recess and do something to help and save our country... and begin the Impeachment of traitor Dick Cheney and his wife, who appears to be nothing more than a defense contractor arms dealer operating like a British asset.

We are not the United States of Criminal Coverup.
We are the United States of America.

It remains to be seen what they will do next
to our great Country.

We are also on China's List...
"No country on earth, except for Israel, supports the Bush regimes’ desire to attack Iran. It is China’s decision whether it calls in the US ambassador, and delivers the message that there will be no attack on Iran or further war unless the US is prepared to buy back $900 billion in US Treasury bonds and other dollar assets."

Well, you certainly haven't made any strong argument for voting for the Democrats.
Of course I'd for for Kucinich if he became the nominee, but if you're honest with yourself you'll see that the DNCC and DLC will never allow it. Those Republicans in sheep's clothing are even more demoralizing tom me than real Republicans.
I was fool enough to believe that Dean could become the nominee without them three years ago, but I won't get fooled again.

Heck, I'm old enough to remember New York's Lindsay and Javits, both honorable men and Republicans.

I agree with one one the earlier posters. Anything you receive from the RNC, toss it, delete it, whatever.

Just when I think the Repugs have used up all their bag of dirty tricks, somehow they manage to come up with one more, and each one dirtier than the last one.

Let them send anything like that to me, and let's see how they like my reply.

To the RNC:

If you do not cease and desist at once, I will strongly consider bringing charges of Domestic Terrorism under Section 802 of the USA Patriot Act against you as well
as charges of Mail Fraud, etc.

Then I will post that everywhere I can think of on the Internet.

Bananaphone's picture

This was already posted at the original site, so please ignore if you read the comments on Mudraker.

Sneaky, very sneaky. The language of this letter fascinates me, because it implies but never admits to tracking voters or intimidating donations. Some examples:

1. "We have no record of you every supporting......." It implies that they've been watching you and you've let them down. However, your voting record is private (we assume) so they should literally have no record of how you voted.

2. "You've never made a dues payment....." I didn't realize my party affiliation was a club, that I had to pay dues to stay a member. I pay dues to my club, I make donations to my party.

3. "Some of our 72 hour canvassers have even used the word 'strongly' to describe the intensity of your support for our party". When you have no record that I've voted for a Republican since Reagan, I have no record of supporting Bush and I've never made a donation (sorry, a "dues payment") to my party? What exactly are they basing my strong support on?

4. "you also tell people you are one of us." Oh crap, they've been listening to my conversations?!

5. "A contribution of as little as $25 will make you a Sustaining Member of the Republican Party". The capitalization of "Sustaining Member" is the only indication that this is a title, nothing more. Taken as implied, I would assume that not making a donation would mean that I would be dropped from my party (to sustain means to retain or "keep on"). Interestingly enough, sustaining membership is not capitalized on the Republican Verification form, but since it does indicate that your donation makes you a sustaining member of the RNC, not the Republican party, it's technically correct.

5. (Canvassing data apparently was collected in 1984, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006). I'm guessing this was when the US Census contacted the person, or maybe they just checked random boxes. But it would seem as if the Republican party was watching this person for the last 23 years. Creepy.

6. (doesn't technically count, but it is confusing: In Issue Orientation, the person is asked to check yes or no and indicate intensity. 5=strongly support and 1=do not support). If I check Anti-Tax as "no" and mark "5", does that mean I strongly support Anti-Tax, or I strongly support voting no on Anti Tax? Conversely, if I mark "no" on Anti Tax but also mark "1", does that mean I do not support voting no on Anti Tax?

This sort of letter really creeps me out. One poster described it as ham-fisted, but in truth the language in this letter was subtly and masterfully crafted to intimidate without breaking a single rule.
