Rep. Dennis Hastert, who was speaker of the House longer than any Republican, announced Friday morning he will not seek another term in Congress.

"It was a great personal privilege and honor for this former teacher and wrestling coach to have been elected and to have served the American people," Hastert said in a news release.

Hastert was scheduled to speak publicly about his decision at an event for supporters outside the Kendall County courthouse.

Retirement speculation has circulated since he forfeited the powerful speaker's post when Republicans lost control of the House in last year's elections. Hastert, 65, declined to run for minority leader, taking on a role as elder statesman among Republicans. Read more...

Hastert is just one of many rats jumping ship. It's not surprising he didn't retire after the huge loss to the Democrats in '06, these thugs don't let go of power easily. It's a damn shame, after all that time served in Congress this elder statesman's lasting legacy will be one of scandal and failure as he protected child predator and fellow Republican, Mark Foley. Not to worry, Denny has made sure he'll be quite comfortable in his civilian life. These lucrative land deals should net him enough money to make sure he and his family are provided for, for years to come. CQ has more on the Republican retirement wave...

He was teaching Foley his wrestling holds.

There has to be a better way to pick the leaders in Congress than just seniority. The current way leads to too much cronyism and also leads to inertia by the voters (as people don't want to lose their extra influence by voting out an idiot that's been there for decades).

WashStateBlue's picture

taking on a role as elder statesman among Republicans..... appearing in food judging booths at various state fairs across the midwest?

What, you thought Denny was getting a job at AEI as a policy wonk?

Jesus, even hard cord Republics know Denny's waist measurement is bigger then his IQ!

Blue Buddha's picture

Wow... isn't this like the fourth or fifth Republican to retire this week? So much for the 100 year Third Reich GOP majority.

Cut and run, baby!!!

mudshark's picture

whats really funny is now that their bailing out...they are realizing that the guy who said he'd back them up.....has bailed on them...ahhh the loyalty of the GOP....really something isn't it.

Fatass is going to end up having a 'J Edgar Hoover' like disclosure some time down the road.

No problem for the sweaty wrestling swine.

K Street beckons. The big money yet to be made.

Plus, Sweaty has that ROI for the land he sold on that fat highway deal he orchestrated.

Take your money and go swine.

The Bush-Cheney virus proved to be one hell of a contagion. Had the Rethuglican Party addressed the virus in time instead of enabling it and covering it up they might could have at least saved themselves, but now it is too late. I almost kinda feel sorry for them.....NOT!!

Finally! That land-deal scam is some old-fashiond corruption I CAN UNDERSTAND!

About time. There should be term limits on all these asswipes. Then you wouldn't have all the corruption and corporate ball licking that is currently infesting Washington so badly.

More long term Illinois Repukes cashing in their chips, Ray LaHood is an 18th District Repuke who has been in Washington since the 70's (and runs practically unopposed in his district) and he recently said enough too, he's gone with Denny. Good riddance.

I dont know who is gonna miss anyone who was a rubber stamp for Bush, you are, and should be, forever tainted by association. It should be ending political careers.

StCyrlyMe's picture

What else do you expect him to say?. This guy is not half as dumb as he looks and acts.

He knows he would never withstand another election so he's stashing all the corporate cash he has stolen from the people of this country and moving on.

The thing that has irked me from day one is when he refused to award Nancy the gavel. He sat in the back and had the most despicable look on his fat face.

I don't know, maybe he couldn't walk that far without a coronary.

I think they're all moving to Dubai to share the Iraq contract profits.

Hastert will be moving to Massachusetts to wed Mark Foley.

Out of the majority, out of the speaker's chair. Hastert decides to cut and run. Something our soldiers aren't privileged to do themselves. Big Denny played a huge role in the Iraq fiasco.

A big role in Congress refusing to perform its duty, especially during a time of military occupation of Iraq. The last two republican majority's ran congress. One being the "DO nothing Congress" and I'd like to name the other , "the roll over congress".

My dog would have a hard time sniffing out anything close to an ELDER STATESMAN within the rank-smelling ranks of the Republican party. Small-minded, power hungry hypocrits who currently blame every failure withing shooting range on the Democrats rather than their own OBSTRUCTIONISM.

Remember how they all used to HOWL about the Democrat Obstructionists? Those BASTARDS! They abhore "bi-partisan" like the plague. Good RIDDANCE to Hastart. HE's been part of THE PROBLEM for a long time.

I guess he realizes that since the democrats aren't going to

a) impeach Bush/Cheney
b)stop the war in Iraq
c)will continue to destroy civil liberties such as the recent FISA ruling before Congress went on vacation;

that he doesn't have to remain in office to continue the status quo.

I watched "To Catch a Predator" on MSNBC where they were running their sting operation in Forida. A few of the predators arrived to the set-up but never got out of their car, they changed their minds, and tried to drive off but were captured, and charged by the police anyway. Now we all heard the Mark Foley tapes where he basically did the same thing as the othersw but still has not been charged. What gives.

I live in the district bordering Hastert's. It is filled with the reddest Republicans one can imagine. John Laesch is an honest guy who ran against Hastert last time.

I challenge Rahm Emmanuel to do the right thing and support Laesch without expecting quid pro quo.

Call me crazy, but I think if Laesch comes out and says he is not Emmauel's puppet, he has a better chance of winning.

Dennis got his suit case full of money stolen from Saddam and delivered to his second home by the military. Brummer made sure all the insider of the Bush/Cheney team got their share. Dennis also got his share of the money stolen from the US Treasury. Now keeping his mouth shut about Fingers Foley was loyal to the team never mind how many kids Fingers was molesting. Dennis might have enough money for his family but he can't buy his way in Heaven. He came here with nothing and he leaves with nothing. Now Satan will welcome him when his time comes.
