This new video from Al Franken's official Senate campaign website takes a light hearted jab or two at Minnesota Senator, Norm Coleman, who is welcoming President Bush to the state for a private fundraiser.

Norm Coleman just doesn’t get it. Minnesotans want a Senator who’ll stand up to the special interests and stand up for working families – not a Senator who’ll stand with George W. Bush.

Coleman’s going to try to run from his record of supporting the Bush administration – he votes with the President almost 90% of the time – but first, he’s bringing in George W. Bush for a ritzy private fundraiser.

Senator Coleman is hoping to use President Bush’s big-money megaphone to drown out our voice. I need your help to keep that voice strong. Read more...

That's a great video that should play very well in EVERY state, not just minnesota. Put your support behind your local representatives who aren't the Bushbot Rubber stampers. People power is real. Put your money where your mouth is and support grassroots efforts in your states.

cool

Coleman is going to get beat by a comedian. Now that's comedy for you.

Bush sux.

I want to move to Minnesota, just so I can vote for Al. Okay, I'll stay in California; send a few bucks and get a t-shirt instead.

Love ya Al!
...Rowdy!

Damn, I love Al Franken. That was great.

Greg @ 3:

Beat? Heck, Coleman is gonna get *stomped* by a comedian. If Franken gets less than 60% I'll be surprised. Go, Al.

Nice.

Give 'em hell, Al.

There would have been no better way to say that. Well done Al!

Maybe if our entire government was run by comedians they'd be laughing at themselves instead of at us.

I'm getting all teary deary. Go Franken!

I'm confused; a political candidate spoke to me like I wasn't an idiot. That seems so un-American.

Or, maybe if our entire government was run by comedians, we'd be laughing with them instead of at them.

So if his ad is airing on youtube for free, does that mean that these politicians won't require so much money to run?

I live in California but I made a small donation today to Al's campaign because our whole country would benefit from him being a Senator. I listened to Al every day on Air America and was astounded at how smart he is. He's a great comedian, but he's also a very intelligent man with a huge heart! I hope so much he wins!

Intelligence, Wit and Honesty.

These qualities are not common in the senate.

Oh my, what a different country we would have if they were.

Wouldn't it be refreshing to laugh with them, rather than at them.

Great comedians are usually very intelligent. I can think of more than a handful of comedians who would do a better job doing the people's business than those who are currently supposed to be doing it and those who are asking to do it in the future.

The Al Franken Decade is about to begin!

al is funny no doubt, but those who would label him as a comedian running for the seat miss the point. he is not a comedian running for office. rather, he's a political pundit in the vein of will rogers, mort sahl, bill maher and others who were astute enough to see the politics of america and put it in the context of comedy. should al win, and i hope to heck he does, he will not turn the seat into a throne of comedy. rather, i think you will see his quick mind pick apart the house of corruption that now permeates both the house and the senate as well as and maybe expecially, the oval office. he will be a breath of fresh air. support him in any way that you can.

We need more genuine comedians to replace the ass clowns known as republicans.

Like the Half Hour News Hour, Coleman will be cancelled.

Al Franken will undoubtedly win in this race........Sen Coleman should start looking for an alternative line of work now...That would be the sensible thing for him to do.

America needs Al.

Sen Coleman should start looking for an alternative line of work now…

It won't be difficult, he will just keep working for these people.

Hmmm... Coleman took $1.8 million from the Realtwhores? Those housing bubble foreclosures should make that a popular issue with voters.

norm coleman's political stripes have changed since his first foray into the sharp-elbowed world of politics. a quick web search will make this apparent.

unfortunately, for sen coleman, in 1996 he stuck his wetted finger in the air and make the political calculation to turn his back on the ideals he once stood for--blatant political scheming, if you ask me. and of the most pathetic and despicable kind.

norm, i think you lost your way, and in the process have helped to trample the most important document--the US constitution--in your coddling of the bush regime.

it is time to go norm. you will not be missed. but maybe, just maybe, your conscience can come to peace with the fact that you have become the embodiment of everything you fought against when your integrity, morals and ethics were still intact. hard to remember waaaay back then, i bet. but some quiet solitude, away from any position where you can do further harm, might help the process.

go franken! (and, al, i was wondering... how does one become a working member of team franken anyway?

CafeenMan @ 17: "Great comedians are usually very intelligent".

Dennis Miller thinks he is intelligent and funny, but sadly, he makes more people want to puke than laugh.

I loved Al since his SNL days. His books are fantastic, witty and insightful. He'll make a graet representative. Cheers Al!

You can tell he's been spending alot of time in Minnesooooohhhhhta...:-)

Go Al!

Shades of "Fast-Paced Paul," the classic 1990 Wellstone ad.

Al does bring optimism for the direction of this country. Optimism, where hating something enough to vote against is the GOP rule of the day.

Al I almost want to move to your state just to be able to vote FOR you. The people that will vote for Norm are people that have been propagandixed into hating so much that they "vote against something".

Al is bringing back the "Vote for Something".

Norm will want you to vote against Al and tell you bad things to come.
Al will tell you voting For him is about.

Wish Al was running in my state.................

Edgar: Wow, really GREAT to see that someone beside me knows about www.Opensecrets.org...I use it quite often since it is the ony source I
know where one can go to determine "Who Gives" and "Who Receives."

rove only deserves a mention because this is about crooks and liars.

My thoughts exactly.

I know you're not reading this, Al, but GREAT JOB. Please keep it up.

BaScOmBe @ 32:

sorry wrong thread.

go al!

I cringe when I hear a Democrat call the Republican Congress a Rubberstamp Congress for President Bush.

The current Democratic Congress continues being a Rubberstamp Congress for Lame Duck President Bush.

Democrats have overwhelming given approval to President Bush and AT&T to continue spying On Americans, continually extended the due date for Bush Administration to answer subpoenas issued by the Senate Judicial Committee, completely give up on subpoenas issued to Harriet Miers, etc, eagerly echoing the Bush Administration's assessment that the Iraq War escalation is causing improvement in Iraq, approving Gen Betrayus's report that further escalation in Iraq is needed, impeachment is off the table, and continue to support Alberto Gonzalez who has engaged in crimes against the US Constitution.

Does Al Franken think we will overlook that Democrats have joined the Bush Administration in the continued destruction of America?

Coleman couldn't cut the mustard...

but the cheese on the other hand.

I'm digging Al's campaign. Good luck to him. Coleman's toast

That was a wonderful ad---modest, straightforward, clear. Wow, I hope Al becomes a senator. He was already great as Stewart Smally; I don't doubt he could proportionately be every bit as great as Sen. Al Franken. Yes, doggone it!

What pisses me off about this is that Bush is flying around in Air Force One to attend private republican fund raisers at our expense. Isn't there some type of code or something saying that he cannot use our resources for this type of crap?

Al should hire this guy as his communications director.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrdFFCnYtbk

\\remember this one?!?

I used to live in MPLS. Wish I could vote for Franken.
Good luck Minnesotans!

Great ad. It's just straight talk and gets right to the point of why you should vote for him.

To ignorance not bliss (39):

I wish we could stop this shit but can't. Bush did the same damn thing in Ohio last year before the elections. He came to Columbus to a photo op and private fund raiser with Mike DeWine - came on a Friday afternoon during rush hour just before the 4th of July - they shut down the airport, I-270, and 315. Most people I knew left work around 1 p.m. that day to avoid the circus. Everyone I knew was pissed about the whole thing. But for all that, DeWine still lost. At least that gave me a chuckle.

What a mensch. If there is any justice in this world, he'll win.

I thought he was going to crack "... if you happen to have $15,000 under your mattress, I won't say no to it... " but perhaps it was wise not to go there.

Al Franken just sounds like a stand up guy... and not a stand up comedian.

Maybe stand up is all the same at the root, comedian or politician. It requires stage presence, ability to relate to your audience, and willingness to bomb completely, simply because YOU thought it might be funny, or because YOU believe it is true.

His delivery is really good.

Being a Minnesotan I would say that--unfortunately--there is a lot of nuance being missed here. First, I am not certain that Al will be as warmly accepted by all Minnesotans. There is a far amount of damning material out there on Al--just read any of the accounts of SNL(for example "Live From New York") and you'll see that there is enough drug use and sexuality that he has publicly acknowledge, at the farmer from Olivia will be extremely bothered by him. That's not to say that Norm wasn't a roady...He has a history too. But polling in Minnesota doesn't indicate that he's a shoe-in.

Secondly, I think Al is a brilliant person. He has a lot of Paul Wellstone in him and we need that a geat deal. He's also a bit problematic personally. I have my hesitations from talking with him.

That said, he will, hopefully, make a great voice on the national scene for Progressivism. We need Paul Wellstone's voice now more than ever and if that voice is laced with biting humor, that would be a great plus.

Rhl @ 12:

I'm confused; a political candidate spoke to me like I wasn't an idiot. That seems so un-American.

It is quite a change. Go, Al!

I can't wait to see Al in the Senate Judiciary asking question to those corrupted Rpugs. He'll have them crawling under the table.

I used to live in Minnesota. I'm sending him another $10 because I loved his thank-you card so much. Go Al!

Bush is using AF-1 to campaign. I thought it was illegal to use government funds for political reasons.
Does he or the RNC or pharma or oil or (insert any of goverment's true owners) reimburse US for that?
Ass, gas or grass: Nobody flies for free.

Also, shouldn't these SOBs be working instead of out campaigning?
In addition to not voting for anyone who does not support campaign finance reform, it seems prudent (thanks GHWB) to not vote for someone who sloughs off so much work.

I do not know how coleman ever got elected....I don't trust voting with people like he and Phew-lenty and Bachman win. Minnesota DOES NOT like their ilk...If the USA doesn't go back to all paper ballots we are in a heap of trouble.

Poor Norm, he doesn't stand a chance.
Hey Norm, I just want you to know that I have a job for you next year if you need it. Mowing my grass.

@40 Robert,

excellent choice !!

I actually thought you had a you tube vid of Al. fooled me........

Okay. I can't stand Coleman. But does anyone really think that the star of the unwatchable "Stewart Saves his Family" (or whatever) is remotely qualified to be a Senator. I thought electing the unqualified because they managed a decent soundbite was a Republican strategy...

Excellent!

Al Franken is DEFINITELY SMART ENOUGH TO BE A US SENATOR! Listen to what he just said. That was not a hair brained sound bite. So he failed at acting. BFD. Maybe that's a good thing!

Al Frankin = Hot Shit!

Franken may be a satirist but he has a brilliant mind and seems to genuinely care about the country.

I've discussed more than once here and elsewhere why I think Coleman has a great chance against Franken -- and the (two?) polls have shown Coleman a pretty secure winner. The bridge collapse may be a significant variable but I still think Coleman is quite viable.

This time I will ask, "Who was that video for?" Aren't most of us here people who have listened to more than a few of his Air America shows and already likely to vote for him if we can? As one other comment above alludes, what is Franken doing to bond with the pig farmer in SW Minnesota, the wheat farmer in NW Minnesota, the yuppie doctor in Rochester, the Michell Bachman crowd in St. Cloud or even the blue collar miner or lumberman in NE Minnesota? Like a beltway Democrat, is he issuing videos? Or is he visiting church socials and small town parades? Better be the latter because I don't think Franken's blue collar credentials are at all secure.

Let's not forget. Al still needs to get the DFL nomination in June!!!
The "ol-school DFL party folk" are whipped on Mike Ciresi, so we need to get party newcomers to show up to precinct caucuses and county unit conventions. Don't just donate $10, on top of that, bring a friend to precinct caucuses etc. etc. etc...Let's make sure Al receives the DFL endorsement.
