Bangor, Maine Newspaper's Conflict of Interest?
By bluegal Saturday Aug 25, 2007 6:57pmFrom Senate 2008 Guru:
Not only is a Bangor office staffer of Susan Collins married to the executive editor of the Bangor Daily News (without so much as a disclaimer attached to articles run by the BDN on Collins), but the executive editor himself, Mark Woodward, was once Collins' press secretary! I'm sure Susan Collins is all too happy to have her former staffer (and husband of a current staffer, surely with a vested interest to see his wife maintain employment) making editorial decisions about what does and doesn't get covered (and how it gets covered) in the 2008 Maine Senate race. I wonder if Susan Collins thinks these conflicts of interest "hurt the political discourse."

nothing surprises me anymore...........
she's got her own newspaper.......well.....close enough.I hope the voters in Maine hear about this..she'll be looking for another job soon.
I'd bet she thinks it HELPS the political discourse, she's a Repug after all.

NO
Is there a US Senator any less qualified than Susan Collins?
Is there a US Senator with a thinner resume' than Susan Collins?
Maybe Olympia Snowe, hard to choose.
As a Mainer, I'm not surprised that the Daily News is tied to Fozzie Bear - er Susan Collins. It's almost as far right as the Manchester (NH) Union Leader. What's sad is what's been happening to two other Maine papers now owned by Blethen out of Seattle. The Portland Press Herald went from being pretty moderate to being fairly conservative. When the managing editor of the Morning Sentinel retired a few months ago, an editor from Portland took over his job and it has moved rapidly to the right.
I cracked up at WCSH-TV's coverage of the peace march in Kennebunkport this weekend. The day of the march the reporting was pretty straightforward with numbers of peace marchers in the thousands and counter protesters at a few hundred. It morphed slightly by the evening news broadcast and then this AM the lead was peace march met by large numbers of pro-troop demonstrators.
In Maine, Tom Allen will do well with voters in District One - his old district because they tend to be better educated and more liberal. As you move into District Two, even our Democratic Representaive Micheaud tends to take conservative positions not in the mainstream of Democratic thinking. It's a matter of survival. Not all rednecks are south of the Mason-Dixon line. Add to them moneyed folk who will vote for the person who promises the biggest tax cut and people like Collins do fairly well.
Allens strategy has to be to tie Collins to Dubya which she is, but he has to hammer away at the obvious. If Dubya stops suddenly, Collins will show up on his next colonoscopy.

The voters in Maine will hear about this if I have anything to do about it. I am going to write a letter to ye ed about it.
But, don't count her out. She has the gun vote.
straight shooter @ 6:
You have that exactly right about the rednecks in district two. Yee Haw - lots of Libertarians up there who love their guns.
Allen has to tie Collins with Lieberman also, with his gung ho, hell bent for leather attacking IRAN. I don't see Allen with a fire in his belly, unfortunately. I may be reading the tea leaves wrong but Allen seems too much like a Unity '08 candidate.
I'm not at all convinced that this obvious conflict is any more significant than the slightly unobvious conflict of the millionaires and billionaires who own 99.9% of the MSM supporting the party of wealth and privilige.
THIS is the free press - the only free press in the whole fascist ruled country.
This isn't possible. Everybody knows the MSM is totally liberal.
Even Bill Kristol gave a disclaimer today, saying that his daughter works for Fred Thompson's campaign(?)
collins has ties all over the place, and she will be using them in everyway possible.
hell, the bangor daily news is partly responsible for her getting elected in the first place in 96.
Collins is using the lessons of the Bush regime.
phlounder,
This isn’t possible. Everybody knows the MSM is totally liberal.

mcaylo,

Political theatre mirrors political life.
Is there a US president any less qualified than George Bush?
Is there a US President with a thinner resume’ than George Bush?
Collins' ringers need to be relieved of their duties at the paper

Ronald Reagan?
GonzoD,
Hoooooooo Agggggghhhhh!
GonzoD,
Shit. it's becoming a regular hall of mirrors around DC!
The media is how Mussolini got his start. I can't think of a more fitting background for a fascist.

I disagree with your comment on Olympia Snowe, whom I consider very well qualified, sensible, and actually quite independent. I've been disappointed in some of her votes, but in general am proud of her and support most of her positions.
The Bangor Daily News isn't a real newspaper (never has been), it just plays one in its own mind...
Straight shooter, it depresses the hell out of me, but I agree with you all down the line. (Down is probably the operative phrase.) The high buzzing sound is Jean Gannett Williams spinning in her grave.
Yeah ... and?
Liberal demigod Bill Moyers was LBJ's press secretary, but he's the lonely voice of fairness, right?
I like my bangors with horseradish and HP sauce.
I think you all would bitch if hung with a new rope. As Rosann Rosannadana used to say..."It's always somethin, if it's not one thing, it's another"
