The Religious Right's "Supreme Vision"

I am back from my vacation, reluctantly plugging myself back into the news. The only English-language channel I saw during my travels was CNN Global, which was more or less news-free with repeated airings of "God's Warriors" over and over. People For The American Way also watched the program and found some chilling aspects to the Christian Warriors segment:

In her series "God's Warriors," CNN's Christiane Amanpour visited Liberty University where she learned that, though greatly pleased with the confirmations of Justices Roberts and Alito, they are training the "next generation of pit bulls" to "keep fighting at the Supreme Court until we have a new day. We never ever, ever give up."

UPDATE: You can watch other portions of the entire Christian Warrior program on YouTube here.

too bad it was pulled... i saw that series and i clearly remember that segment... and so my response is to simply say that we must never stop fighting back or we risk social devolution beyond that of what we've seen in recent years... i doubt any of "god's warriors" actually want to return to the dark ages, but they are certainly adamant on learning this lesson the hard way...

Their "New Day" is Armageddon. Is there any way we can get religious belief defined as a mental disease?

Jo-Ann's picture

I saw the segment in the first airing. What makes this group of fanatics any different in mind control than the "foreigners" we are supposed to convert? This is a dangerous trend and should not even be called a religion.

Funny how we experience numerous terrorist attacks by Christian fundamentalists in this country but this terrorism is acceptable because it's part of the Republican base. Why should I be concerned with Iran when members of Operation Rescue are putting my friends lives in danger every day in my own town?

Welcome home Nicole. Hope your vacation left you rested and ready to rock and roll. :)

I remember several years ago reading how the religious right had a plan to gain control of the government. They were going to infiltrate the govt to the highest level. I remember how much reading that scared me. It sounded like a nightmare. People with their beliefs ruling on the Supreme Court. Well, here we are.

I just heard a spokesman for the pentagon at a press briefer. From what he was saying I doubt there is going to be in draw-down in Iraq any time soon. He was talking about equipment they will be sending over after the first of the year. They wouldn't be planning that if they didn't intend to use it for a long time. How about all these warriors for god sign their damned names on the dotted line and take off for Iraq.

To expect the Religious Right to give up is fallacious. However, they can be made irrelevant. While it is hard to foresee their demise in this era, their hypocrisy is increasingly evident. Trends are contradictory at times. There has been a religious revival and their numbers are increasing but there is also a backlash even among the religious to use of nefarious politics to achieve their social aims. Gay marriage will be a reality in my lifetime. They may chip away in a few states but over time health will prevail. And if we can restore education then issues like evolution should be won. Granted Scopes was in 1925 and we are still fighting that battle.

"they are training the 'next generation of pit bulls'"

Awesome. Let's throw all the "Liberty" "University" grads into a pit and let them fight to the death. That would be less of a loss to society than the dogs Michael Vick murdered.

Probably just as well I couldn't see and hear the video. Hearing it seems worse than reading it.

Does it matter what a group calls themselves or which god they believe in if they are willing to harm human beings in order to accomplish their cause? I don't think so.

I also heard Dan Abrams go off for the same reason. He seemed very upset or at least played the role of being very offended by the parallel to the nut jobs that blow themselves up to these Christians that only mean to follow God's path. You know what path they're referring to, to divide themselves from all others and step up on their high pedestal of hypocrisy. I'm so sick of this argument. Those nut jobs that they refer to, the ones that would put their lives on the line for something they believe in, represent a very small number of Muslims, I'm sure not as many as the Christians who praise our brave American soldiers for putting the lives on the line for something they believe in. After watching this series, I guess for the Christian Right not to fight back would have been expecting a miracle.

This right wing 'noise machine' that exists to hate and spread that hate far and wide, from Sea To Shining Sea, that you speak of didn't just emerge out of a vacuum, it was engineered.

Now, I know that sounds like a bold, tin-foil hat worthy, paranoid statement, but sadly I can back it up.

What do you think is, and has been, the Number One College Debate Team in the USA?

Harvard?

Nope.

Yale?

Nope?

Princeton?

Nope.

Cornell?

Nope.

It's Jerry's Kids, at Jerry Falwell's Liberty College, alma mater of Monica Goodling.

This 'wall of noise' attack style that you see on Fox, and elsewhere, has been perfected and honed on his campus:

"Falwell -- whose argumentative talents are familiar to television watchers worldwide -- calls debate "the most important of our 18 sports," and the team has delivered for him: At the sport's premier national championship last spring, Liberty racked up more points than any other school, including such prestigious institutions as Harvard, Dartmouth, Northwestern and Cornell.

The Liberty students debate with a fervor that grows out of Falwell's belief that Christians are under attack and don't know how to fight back. "I don't think the average Christian could defend themselves," said Alyse Kraus, a 19-year-old varsity debater from Fort Walton Beach, Fla., "but because of the training you get in debate, you can anticipate arguments."

Part of the team's mission is to break stereotypes -- particularly on liberal, secular campuses -- of religious Christians as backward or unintelligent, debaters said.

"Falwell seemed comfortable playing defense and explained in an interview just before the event why debate is so important to Liberty.

"Our debaters' mouths will be running long after football players' legs are not," Falwell said. "Debaters, unlike any athlete, have the potential to change the culture."

The above article ran in the Washington Post in 2004, and they've gotten a lot more practice under their belts since then.

And, follow these below links for more background, that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Also, it's not just the Jerry Falwell's Debate Team that you need to worry about, it's the future Libby Scooters, Karl Roves and Dick Cheneys that are being actively groomed, right now, by this White House.

Think the Sarah Taylors, Monica Goodlings and J. Scott Jennings are bad?

In the words of Ronald Reagan, "you ain't seen nuthin' yet."

Here's some background for you and your listeners on Patrick Henry College, an Evangelical College, comprised of home-schooled kids, that has been a feeder system of White House Interns since Herr Busch took office.

Start with this New Yorker piece:

You may not, but I find this extremely chilling.

For one primary reason, it speaks of a level of organization that we Progressives just don't have.

We can rail against this deplorable machine of hate all we want but the grim fact is if we do not get our stuff together like they have, we will be doomed to failure.

(see: Franklin, Ben, 'hang together, or hang separately.')

Time to get organized, or live with the consequences.

and, speaking of insane, crooked, fuckwads: jerry falwell...

i saw the documentary Maxed Out last night (I super duper recommend it) and they showed some footage of one of his "sermons" (see, satan speak)

he ventured into the subject of debt. oh boy, it was truly a head-slapper. summed up: falwell said that people who are in financial trouble need to give more money to his church, and--somehow--that got them out of financial trouble. he called it spiritual mathematics. he shamed his sheep into giving him upwards of 30% of their money to his satanic church...

wow. falwell, why do you hate baby jesus so? oh wait, falwell is dead... wow, i should respect the dead.... who am i kidding we all know falwell still walks among us, and i don't remember anything about respecting the undead.

I loved when Amanpour called the one guy who runs the Jesus Warriors boot camp on this. The kids aren't allowed to listen to 'secular music' and girls have to wear long skirts. "Isn't that what the Taliban does?" she asked. He managed to spit out some lame answer but you can tell he was caught off guard by having his own shit flung back at him.

I missed the Muslim one, caught the Christian and Jewish one, I am actually rather impressed with the series. It is well done, puts forth the facts of the situations, again of just the two I have seen, and doesn't exactly pull punches, at least as far as CNN goes.

I even had a bit of hope watching the Christian one, during the segments with the two "liberal" pastors. One who has taken a strong environmental stance, and the slander he has had to face because of that from other Christian leaders, and then the pastor who did the 'cross and sword' sermon, chastising Neo-Christians for embracing the war, aggression and intolerance, that has seem to take over the religion. He made a call for Christians to go back to following in the path of Jesus, and embrace peace, love, forgiveness, and tolerance...and staying out of politics. Apparently he lost a 1000 members of his congregation for his "liberal" views, but he gained at least one person willing to listen from this show. If you go to their website, you can watch his sermon for free, or order them and even pay when you get them, after you view them. I'm mostly agnostic, with Taoist leanings, but these two segments renewed my faith in the followers of Christ, unfortunately all the other segments managed to keep that hope in check.

The only way to fight religious people is to use their religion against them. For instance, when the Christian proselytizers come to your front door, ask them "Do you think Jesus would bomb Iran?" and they run, crying, from your house.

They start young -- very young. I believe it was Saint Francis Xavier who said "Give me a child for for his first seven years and I'll give you the man" ...by which the religious wackos operate.

Jebus was a joke on the Simpsons which the writer, Mark Pinsky, pointed out was an ancient name for Jerusalem.

Funny thing was Esus was the name the Romans gave an earlier continental Celtic healing god, but in his case he wasn't hung from anything, but demanded human sacrifice--in a life for a life scenario--by hanging from a tree.

The Supreme Court in Griswold v Connecticut (1965), set the precedent of recoginizing the IX amendment as the "penumbra" amendment, that the original 10 rights aren't our only rights. They also said the IV, V, and VI amendment in particular could be summarized as privacy rights. This was the precedent Roe v Wade (1973) drew from. Since the late 30's the XIV amendment set the standard of the incorporationist doctrine, that along with the Executive Supremacy clause of the US Constitution meant no state could deny federal rights to it's citizenry.

There's also no right in the constitution for a tax free exemption for churches.

Yes. I watched all three parts. I'm not sure who is craziest. They all are. So much for modernity. We're going back to the days of the Crusaders. The biggest cheerleaders here are the neocons. It's because, back then, popes ruled with an iron fist (and fantasy: today it's "spin") and kept everyone in (general) fear, and in fear of hell, and all with stories they cooked up in the church. Here we go again.
