Breaking: Republican Senator Larry Craig Resigns
By Logan Murphy Friday Aug 31, 2007 12:53pm
Disgraced Republican Senator Larry Craig announced that he would resign from the Senate effective September 30th. Apologizing to his family, colleagues and constituents, Craig was somewhat humbled, yet remained defiant to the end. It should be noted that someone brilliantly chose to hold the presser at the historic Boise Train Station -- we sincerely hope the Senator used his bathroom at home before leaving to make his announcement...

Perhaps he can get a job as a catholic priest?
how come Bruce Willis was there?
You GO, Girl.
was he trying to convince the American people or himself that he is now humble?
Amy @ 2:
what sort of senatorial resignation is it WITHOUT bruce willis?
He said he mis-understood the term "public service".
This comes as quite a shock! Nobody predicted this! :)
I'm SHOCKED! I never saw it coming.
Coming soon to a public restroom near you!
This is plain stupid. I cannot believe how so-called progressives are licking their chops over this. Hypocricy is one thing; but it's not illegal.
Trolling for sex, to the best of my knowledge, is not against the law. Yet progressives have joined the cons in making this a gay sexual issue.
Just this morning, I heard, on progressive radio, "When it comes to trolling for sex, I draw the line when it happens in public places, straight or gay."
Bullcrap.
Go to any public park on a sunny day (or a beach for that matter) and you'll see straight couples engaged in foreplay. AND in front of the eyes of our precious children.
You don't see this happening with gays because even the sight of two men or two women holding hands in public is "repulsive sex".
There are also pubs and bars, although not considered "public" per se, where trolling for sex is permissible and expected.
The shallowness of the arguments here and elsewhere is appalling. This is strictly a gay issue that the 'cons and the corporate media served up to us in heaping piles, and we couldn't consume it fast enough.
Vitter committed a much more serious crime of paying for sex, and he's applauded.
Craig, however, drops his drawers and taps his foot, and he's skewered.
I don't understand the hypocrisy of Americans in general. We've obsessed on this issue all week. I can only imagine how the Europeans and other nations are laughing at us. Rightly so.
And how did this guy get elected in the first place? he is one of the most boring speakers I have ever heard, he makes Ben Stein sound like he's going pizazz in his voice. Was anyone running against him? and if so what was that person like? A box of hair? did his opponent give all of his speeching while waving dead puppies around? I mean what kind of person could loose a race to this guy? Or was Diebold involved? that's about the only explanation I would buy!!!
Now, repeat after me:
David Vitter, David Vitter, David Vitter...
All GOP "family values" hypocrites need to go.
the guy is NO politician... a real political animal would have thrown itself on the mercy of the public... it would have admitted it was bisexual and forced to hide part of its life because of the barbarians that currently own the Republican Party...
he could have possibly won sufficient sympathy and grudging respect to emerge as an independent to challenge the next Republican...
thereby, splitting the right vote and allowing a Democratic senator to sneak in... *sigh*... ok... just a daydream...
Sad really ... how the Republicans are 'with you' if you're spouting homophobic hate ... but you get in trouble and they dump you like a dead flashlight battery ...
Just Me @ 10:
Me, until you understand that America is an Idol Nation (in ever possible sense of the word) the less you'll comment on the obvious like that, sorry I'm not trying to talk shit about what you wrote, I'm just bitter that this sorry ass nation doesn't have more sense then this. Personally I think it's pretty funny the whole thing, if he was going to plead guilty to get it out of the way why argue with the cop? this guy just handled it wrong is why it's got so much news time, if he would have just admitted it he would probably still have a job.
I don't think the light was ever on in that flashlight.
Just Me @ 10:
For the record, I'd love to see Vitter go down, as he is as much of a hypocrite as Craig is. Unfortunately it seems that in Louisiana one person they trust less than a politician sleeping with hookers is one who's not. I guess that is why Vitter still has his job.
I hope you will forgive those of us who laugh at Craig. It's just so funny to see yet another closeted homosexual emerging from the ranks of the "party of values."
Just Me @ 10:
Dear Airhead, the hypocracy is about how he constantly raised his voice against gay rights, gay people in general and then in the end (no pun intended) he gets caught openly soliciting gay sex in a mensroom.
baby jesus wonders how many more hypocritical politicians saying one thing and doing another will it take for the silly little humans to understand the dynamics of authoritarian
control and the authoritarian mind set? baby jesus figured it out a couple thousand years ago and many more did before that controlled the same way
[deleted - off topic.]
[deleted - your right wing talking points have been duly noted. The post isn't anti-gay in any way and you know it. Move along.]
d-man @ 17:
I hate to be the one to interject the base aspect of politics into this but there is a simple reason why the GOP has sought to protect Vitter over Craig. Idaho is a GOP safehold. No Ds in national office. Louisiana, especially in the light of failures of federal support after Katrina, holds no such guarantee for a GOP politician.
Word for the day. Too bad Larry doesn't know what it means.
10 Just Me
Speak for yourself. I also have found this to be a distraction on almost the same level of Britney refusing to wear panties, however, Britney is not singing songs about ostricizing women who refuse to wear panties. (I have other issues with her, but she is beside the point.)
We have a man here who has helped force people just like himself to seek out companionship in inappropriate places because some gay people feel being open about their sexuality would harm them in some way. Indeed, being openly gay has harmed many people (the Nazis put them in the ovens too.)
Had the gay Republican law makers in our nations history (and the Democratic ones as well) stood up for the rights of themselves and other gays Craig could have openly married another man, had he found his soul mate or if not could have gone in search of a soul mate in public without fear.
He and those who think as he does burried him.
Don't blame progressives for seeing the irony. Ignoring this story does nothing for the promotion of gay rights.
After years of hearing God Fearing Republicans on the Hill continually whine and express disgust with Bill Clinton for getting a BJ, I think I finally get it. They are mad because they wanted to be the one giving it.
I think it's too bad Craig resigned.
I would have much preferred that he stayed in office and try to fight these bullshit laws in this country. Why the hell are cops running sting operations to catch people in the bathroom? Why shouldn't gay men be allowed to pick up on each other in a public bathroom?
Craig should have stayed on, so he could represent the gay men of Idaho that just wanna have a little bathroom fun.
Nicole Belle @ 22:
Good point. I just hope that "Just Me" doesn't mind if I continue to laugh at Larry Craig. The main reason I laugh is that he is just the latest member of the GOP/"party of values" to emerge from the closet. I'm sure there are more.
Just Me @ 21:
Thank you, Captain Obvious - no, hypocrisy is not illegal. What IS illegal is soliciting sex in a public mens room. The fact that the man doing it is the same guy who has been bashing gays for decades is just icing on the cake.
What a "humbled" and confused homophobic neocon fascist. Certainly, he will retain his congressional pension to suck from the treasury of the US. What a disgraced and exposed hypocrite. Now, it seems, there are only 48 more neocon fascists in Congress to go after.
"another one bites the dust". He loves Idahoans.....males in restrooms especially.
Just Me @ 10:
This is plain stupid. I cannot believe how so-called progressives are licking their chops over this. Hypocricy is one thing; but it’s not illegal.
Apparently it is illegal in Minnesota, or else the cop wouldn't have busted him for it. I think most progressives aren't "licking their chops" because he's gay, but because he's a Republican. That's why I am anyway.
I agree with Larry Craig that he is not gay. That would be an insult to gays.
He is a public restroom pervert.
koko @ 26:
heh this prick spends his time kicking other homos under the bus!!!!!
how come Bruce Willis was there?
Are you sure that isn't George Michael looking for some action?
Just Me @ 10:
JustMe - You're right. There is an unacceptable level of homophobia in American culture. It's repulsive that people go out of their way to limit or remove the right of gay men and women to live their lives unmolested by the tyranny of self-righteous puritans.
The thing is, Craig is one of those self-righteous puritans. I'm not terribly knowledgable about how gay men troll for sex in public bathrooms - undoubtably, this is because I am a straight woman - but the police officer in question knew exactly what Craig was doing and it wasn't some harmless foot-tapping. And the police officer in question was upholding the law that people like Craig helped to pass.
So, by all means, champion the cause of freedom for sexual expression. But don't confuse this issue. I'm glad Craig has resigned. I don't care if he's gay or straight or a bit of both. I care that he's a hypocrite who would punish others for the behaviour he engaged in himself.
Oh, and Vitter should be forced to resign for the same reason. Not because he was unfaithful to his wife, but because (1) he solicited a prostitute, which is illegal and (2) he made a career out of his 'family values' when he obviously had no values to speak of - family or otherwise.
Baby Jesus if you figured out the dynamics of authoritarianism several thousand years ago, why are you still calling yourself a baby?
Now Larry will have all the time in the world to seek his legal options. Why would he stop now? He said he was innocent even though he plead guilty. Instead he plans a book titled "If I Did It".
d-man @ 27:
Oh trust me, there's more. Go down to the Round Up and look at the Down With Tyranny link.
And as long as you're laughing, did you strike you as a poor choice of phrasing when Craig thanked the Governor for standing behind him, and for always standing behind him? Given Craig's alleged knowledge of secret gay codes/signals, that was funny to me.
Just Me @ 10-
Go to any public park on a sunny day (or a beach for that matter) and you’ll see straight couples engaged in foreplay. AND in front of the eyes of our precious children.
Ya mean makin' out, as in kissin'? Yeah, I guess ya'd consider that the early stages of foreplay, but if I ever saw two people clutchin' at each others' genitalia or dry humpin' each other in the park, I sure as hell wouldn't call that acceptable. And any couple engagin' in sex in a park, when apprehended, should be charged.
Vitter committed a much more serious crime of paying for sex, and he’s applauded.
Are ya livin' in some parallel universe or somethin'? Republicans certainly weren't applaudin' Vitter. As fer Dems and other libs- that wasn't applause either. Those were laughs of derision.
Ah, now it makes more sense. Craig is staying in Washington until September 30th so that he can transfer his staff.
the gop "leadership" probably gave him some kind of deal to step down.
so they can maintain that seat.
Kevin Good @ 31:
He was having a public restroom relationship.
Curtilingus @ 35:
hes kind of busy calling other folks morons
When asked what he will do in retirement, former Sen. Larry Craig said he has set up a glory hole in his basement.
Just me at nr 10
As a certified Swede - yes we laugh at you. But mostly at the whole situation. A Gay-basher senator caught in a mens restroom looking for gay sex....yes thats funny. It sort of highlights the american obsession with homosexuality in particular and sex in general. One day we hope you will get real sex education in schools, demystify contraceptives, get your teenage pregnancy rates down, accept people whatever they are sexually, stop bombing abortion clinics, and generally mature in this area.
Nicole Belle @ 37:
Well, I must confess I missed that the first time around. Now that I think about it, it is pretty darned funny (almost spilled my tea while laughing!). Where's Ed McMahon/Phil Hartmann (may he rest in peace) when you need him?
Nicole Belle @ 22:
Even more relevant, imo, is that Idaho's GOP governor will choose Craig's replacement. If Vitter would resign his replacement would be chosen by Louisiana's Democratic governor.
He's glad the Governor is standing behind him?
He's proud of servicing Idahoans and the nation?
What a loser. He's "humbled" because he got caught!
Greup @ 44:
Tell me, is sex any fun anymore after all that edumacation. Doesn't it take the nastiness out of it? We like the nastiness.
To Andy K:
There was nothin' like that goin' on in Craig's tearoom. He was just makin' hand signals. The fact that you c'n git yerself arrested fer that is ridiculous.
I wonder if the Democratic Senators have passed a rule keeping all the Rupublicans out of the mens room. Make 'em go outside if they can't learn to behave themselves.
No that's not public enough he's going to open up a bar called "THE OUT HOUSE", just a series of stall walls and toilets that let you belly up to the bar.
Curtilingus @ 41:
Thanks for your grasp of the obvious.
Andy K @ 46:
Exactly so. "Values" only matter to the GOP when they have a comfortable majority. Since they can't afford to lose the Vitter seat, hookers, diapers and spankings are de rigueur.
Greup @ 44:
If only!
In the future, no one will remember Greek tragedies, only American ones.
For the record, Site Monitor: I don't appreciate your implication that I'm a right-winger. At least I said what a lot of people are thinking about this disaster of an issue.
I am a Kucinich supporter.
For the record.
Then please stop using right wing talking points to inappropriately attack people here.
Greup @ 44:
Thank you. I am an American and I hope for the day that we will mature in this area.
Sadly, I don't see it happening any time soon.
Greup @ 44:
I wish that for us too, but we have a President who misinterprets history, has read only a handful of books and thinks war is a good thing.
Although i personally believe he has never been elected i am willing to admit almost half the voters voted for him.
We are light years away from enlightenment.
If I was Craig, I'd be more than a little bitter at the savage rejection by the GOP, while they suck face with whoremeister Vitter. No spin can cover their hypocrisy.
Brian @ 49:
How many times have I gotta....
Cruise yer local red-light district and go up to every woman on a street corner and say, "Twenty for french." You'll know which of these women is an undercover cop when yer cuffed on the street.
My point bein' that those hand and foot signals are widely accepted by the courts as code fer solicitation to commit a crime(sex in public, public indecency, whatever they call it in the jurisdiction). There needs be no verbal or written component.
My suggestion to eveyone out there is that if ya feel the need to tap yer feet in the stall, do so in 4/4 time while hummin' a Neil Young tune. If ya just gotta be anal about it, pick up that piece of toilet paper palm down rather than with the back of yer hand. And if ya bump feet with the person next to ya, promptly apologize.
I can't wait to see if his rethug Senate colleagues give him a standing "O" when they and he return to Congress next week or will they pretend he no longer exists. And why 30 days notice when the Governor is also a rethug and naturally, will appoint a rethug to replace him.
"Vitter committed a much more serious crime of paying for sex, and he’s applauded"
the only evidence
as far as I know is a phone number
making phone calls is not
illegal... yet...
heh...

The Boise Depot is for sure a beautiful spot. Even better at sunset when the mountain backdrop turns a reddish brown.
Latest FaBlog: Fait Divers -- Buh-Bye!
Just Me @ 10:
i agree wholeheartedly... i never want to ever hear that recording again where he's explaining how he spreads his legs... what he did, if he actually did engage in some form trolling for sex is entirely irrelevant outside of the fact that he was a hypocritical repuglican senator whom espoused values in opposition to those he indulged in... that alone is enough for him to lose his role as a public servant... the act itself was nothing more than what happens with heterosexuals everywhere, everyday and every minute of every day...
i found myself embarrassed and sorry for the man when i initially heard the recording and increasingly pissed that it was continually rebroadcast everywhere... i'm certainly no fan of the hypocritical rethuglicans and am happy that another hypocrite has been ousted from his throne, but i'm also disappointed in the childishly titulated gloating over the entrapment of someone who's viewed as an opponent being caught doing something everyone engages in but few seem to accept as normal, human interpersonal dynamics... (although, and admittedly not usually with private and subdued gestures within public restrooms but in public gathering places with even more grotesque advances such as one drunken fool i once saw placing his exposed penis on a woman's shoulder)...
this is a win for the republicans. they clean up this scandal in less than one week and now they can claim they deal with their problems quickly, while the dems do not. it will be forgotten long before nov. 2008.
except for craig's hypocrisy, especially his comment about clinton, this is more media hysteria than substance.
Let's get back to the real issues next week and stop the insanity in the middle east.
Larry Craig's parting statement featured that classic Republican denial of culpability, the Unpology.
Announcing his September 30th resignation, the Idaho GOP Senator artfully avoided accepting accountability for his men's room escapades. Instead, he offered the appearance of apology only for their aftermath:
"I apologize for what I have caused. For any public official at this moment in time to be standing with Larry Craig is in itself a humbling experience. I have little control over what people choose to believe."
Craig's evasion is just the latest example of the Republican art of the unpology. Facing recriminations for ethical failings, racist behavior, sexist statements or outright criminality, this new generation of Republican wrong-doers delivers the facade of apology by uttering obligatory words of remorse devoid of actual regret, contrition - or even an admission of guilt.
For more details, see:
"The Unpology of Larry Craig."
I love how fast Craig was thrown under the proverbial by Mitt "future god" Romney, as if he didn't know, along with every other Republican big wig, that 'ol Wide Stance was, and always has been, gay. A friend of mine works with a dude who went to high school with Craig and it was common knowledge back then. But, I think it is important to remember that the "being gay" part is not the point. The point is the overwhelming hypocrisy demonstrated by Craig and the Republican party in their stated opinions and voting concerning gay rights issues, such as marriage or anti-discrimination laws.
koko @ 26 -
I would have much preferred that he stayed in office and try to fight these bullshit laws in this country. Why the hell are cops running sting operations to catch people in the bathroom? Why shouldn’t gay men be allowed to pick up on each other in a public bathroom?
First, that would be one helluvan about-face fer a Senator who's voted to legislate against gay rights his whole career.
Second, it's not simply pickin' someone up or makin' a date. It was a solicitation to have sex right there in public. Having sex in public is illegal. Straight sex or gay sex.
If my girlfriend and I decided to engage in this behavior in a public restroom and some walked in and overheard us knockin' about, I'd accept the consequences when detained. The thing is, this type of display is quite uncommon between two women or even heterosexual couples(although there's this thing called "dogging" that's gainin' a bit of momentum- do a search fer it).
Finally, think about the transitory nature of these types of trysts. Was Craig, in this instance, stayin' at the Airport Sheraton? No, he was waitin' fer his connectin' flight. Do ya think he was gonna pick someone up, leave the airport, get a room, schtup, then go through the extended boardin' process and still catch his connectin' flight? Do ya? Really?
So Craig falls on the restroom stranger's sword.
Just me: You're missing the point. Rather astonishingly.
Moralizing about homesexuality, setting yourself up as a holier-than-thou preacher, then being shown to be secretly engaging in the most furtive and even illegal form of the same thing-- it's the hypocrisy. That word gets overused but that's the real crime here. The couples you see in public aren't railing against others being heterosexual. Bill Clinton wasn't railing against adultery. This clown was setting himself up as a moralist and his moralizing was shown to be utter nonsense. THAT's what matters, to me.
I hope this debacle does not shame Idaho so much that it would cause the demise and disuse of this vintage wordplay:
If Mississippi gave Missouri her New Jersey, what would Delaware? Idaho, Alaska!
(Can't do that with Canadian provinces)
gempei @ 73:
Hoosier dad? Oklahoma-sexual Craig?
Andy K @ 70:
Dogging? Could ya give us a hint? Last time I did a search like that...God, the horror.
I'll bet these guys are going to refrain from sex as long as they can for fear of getting caught. Senators Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and House members David Dreier (R-CA), Jim McCrery (R-LA), Phil English (R-PA), Denny Hastert (R-IL), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA). All (possible self-hating) gay Republicans.
Larry Craig reminds me a little of Gary Hart, when he dared the press to prove he was having an affair, and they proved it. The public rebuffed Hart for that because more than anything he had proven himself an idiot. More than being gay or being a hypocrite, Craig, like Hart, proved himself an idiot.
Unfortunately, this doesn't explain Bush...
homosexuals like larry craig are gay
Strawberry-
Okay, it's simply sex in public. There's more amateur vids of this croppin' up all the time. Or so I'm told. ;)
Is it the end of GOP as we know it? Clearly it is time for The Independent Party of America - too liberal to be on the right conservative side and too liberal to be on the left liberal side. That's more or less what America needs. The only alternative is to let the Dems lose and commit political blunders which they do already and let them do it forever so they can keep the status quo, can have the opossition, can have the mirage of US democracy, can't be abandoned and feel alone on the political scene, because this nation has come to exactly such a point. One party an utter travesty, another the enabler of that very erroneous political entity and its highest ranking products including Bush. Beautiful. Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, Gravel and millions of others, the personas non gratas for the DC schmucks, thoughtless think tanks and the gatekeepers namely the media and establishment are getting through to the collective minds, but if need be, I can bet some Dem will expose himself in the public place to let the US be a two party democracy again, let everything get back to normal and be nice and dandy. The good news is, it won't work so the Dems need not to worry. They need not to go there. Let the gay be gay, hypocrites the hypocrites, winners the winners and losers the losers. They can try to be more like the Reps and play with the lever, but this won't f*****g work. The changes are coming. True little revolutions are here already, playing out nicely, almost with sheer perfection.
bubba @ 9:
Fixed
He's not gay!
Ok, NEXT!
U.S. Senator David "Teabag" Vitter (R-LA) must now resign.
steve-
Ron Paul already has an alternative party. It's the Libertarian Party. It' dominated by folks who are to the right of Barry Goldwater and Ayn Rand. Paul was that Party's presidential candidate in 1988.
The problem with yer argument is that while the candidates ya named are considered peripheral, their positions don't jibe. But that's what political parties are all about. They are collectives of people who share philosophies of governance. Bein' percieved as an outsider isn't a political philosophy, though.
StirFry @ 83:
And monkeys must fly outta my butt.
Neither'as gonna happen, though, because:
1)Monkeys don't inhabit my GI tract, and
2)The Governor who would choose Vitter's replacement is a Democrat.
Andy K,
I've got no problems with sex in public, prostitution, casual sex, or any combination of those.
I know Craig's a hypocrite, which is exactly why I would want him to about-face and try to fight such legislation. Once Republicans see a hypocrite trying to legalize sex in public, it will immediately be seen by them as acceptable.
As far as Republicans are concerned, there is no better authority then a hypocrite. (Guys dodge Vietnam that latter become war mongers, etc)
"If my girlfriend and I decided to engage in this behavior in a public restroom and some walked in and overheard us knockin' about, I'd accept the consequences when detained. The thing is, this type of display is quite uncommon between two women or even heterosexual couples(although there's this thing called "dogging" that's gainin' a bit of momentum- do a search fer it)."
Um, have you been to clubs lately? There's a lot of straight sex going on. And there are no raids that I've ever heard of for that behavior. I agree with "Just Me" and "Klunk", with the exception that this is a man who was against everything that he was engaging in. This is a case of justifiable schadenfreude because of the hypocrisy, not the act itself that he was caught doing.
Still waiting for Larry Flynt to publish some more names.
Just Me @ 10:
Obviously you haven't been to Laguna Beach.
Larry Craig was not charged with soliciting sex. He was charged with peeping into a restroom stall and disorderly conduct. He pled guilty to the second charge.
Soliciting sex (gay or straight) isn't illegal unless you ask for or offer money in exchange. Having sex in a public place is a crime, and soliciting to have sex in a public place is a crime as well.
It's not the type of sex or where it is solicited, it's where it is done or is intended to be done that matters.
Many commenters seem to think that it's okay for gay men to have sex in public restrooms, and that it is discrimination to arrest them for doing so.
"This is a case of justifiable schadenfreude because of the hypocrisy, not the act itself that he was caught doing."
Yep.
There's lots more in the bucket of rotting that Craig came from....we can rest assured the repugs will ladel his replacement from that same bucket.
Ahh, how quickly the Republicans unite to rid themselves of a bad apple in their own party. Would that starting wars on false pretenses were considered as serious as soliciting sex.
I wrote before that police regularly convince frightened people in their custody that it is in their best interests to talk to them, and simply plead guilty. What astonishes me is that not only did a U.S. Senator fall for it, but he actually believed that the story wouldn't leak. Dude, you're a politician, Mr. Craig, and a devious Republican one at that! How exactly did you expect a guilty plea, a matter of public record with your name on it, ever to remain a secret from anyone?
Another question I have: If public sex were such a rampant problem in this restroom, why station an undercover cop there to catch people attempting it? Wouldn't it make more sense to place a uniformed guard, or hell, even a bathroom attendant, towel-hander-outer guy there?
Oh well. I have plenty of suspicions about this sordid incident, but little sympathy for Craig. He's the victim of the policies he himself supports. My only sympathy for him, assuming he is indeed gay, is that his own party works so hard to ensure that people like him remain closeted and fearful.
Having sex in a public place is a dicey issue....
Nobody should have to view somebody else's business in a public bathroom like that...
Especially children....
That's why it's illegal...
The way Craig handled his apparent sexuality doesn't obviously help the gay movement...
There are too many people who are homophobic already images of gay people hooking up like this doesn't help...
I feel sorry for the guy's wife, I really do. I bet she is wondering why she needed a pennicillin shot for HIS kidney infection. What a thing to subject your wife and kids to. What a tool.
"we sincerely hope the Senator used his bathroom at home before leaving to make his announcement…"
now there's compassion and understanding....when faced with the intolerant ignorance that Craig and the like demonstrates, meeting it with more intolerance and ignorance is not a solution...just makes the problem worse..
I, for one, hope he is able to find *himself* in all this...he's been hiding it for a long time..
[deleted - we're calling flame baiting on this one. No one is bashing homosexuality here.]
deniz @ 87:
And if the proprietors of those clubs wish to curb this type of behavior they can invite the cops to pay a visit to their private property and have the offenders arrested.
But in Craig's case, the proprietor of the property in which he was operatin' was a public entity. That public entity has laws on its books that it chooses to enforce on its property. Don't like it? Move to Minneapolis and get the law changed, or get the Mayor, the City Council and the Chief of Police changed.
I don't know where people get the idea that they can flaunt any law just because they feel like it. There are consequences fer cruisin' in a public restroom just as there are fer smokin' weed. Do these laws stink? Many of 'em do. But we choose to live in a land of law. We choose to live in a Republic where we elect our representatives democratically. We know what rights and duties we are granted by our Constitution. And we know that we are given a process to change all of these. But, until we do, we can't bitch about the police we employ to do the job we charge them with, as long as they, too, obey those laws.
Andy K @ 84:
Political philosophy? What is that? Just look at the Democratic Party and all the factions and tell me how political philosophy can play any significant role in this day and age, look at how the "Dems" bond together with the President and fellow Republicans, Look at Dean, Lieberman, Harold Ford and Gravel, the Democrats, and tell me what "political philosophy" unites these very people? You can add hundreds more to the pool if you need more time for a thoughtful response and tell me what is wrong with the picture, why people stopped buying it, why the Congress has 18% approval rating, why political philosophies were for the folks who understood the meanings of them, the Greeks, the Romans. How about adding the lobbyists to the pool? Maybe that will clarify the meaning of the modern "political philosophy" for you? Yep, that will do the trick. Hence the revolutions.
nothing to rejoice about people
this does not change the balance of power in the senate, nor will it change idahoe's voting patterns
they will remain a red state, and will blame the whole sordid affair on how clinton destroyed the morals of our society
never mind that the repugs (and maybe some dems) have covered for craig since at least the 80s
never mind that the repug party has been proven to be run by moral midgets and that everything this party says it stands for is bullshit
go and see how the repug party would much rather watch the entire economy collapse rather than bail out the idiots who bought into all the mortgage scams....scams that shouldve been illegal in the first place
we are doomed, and this one resignation wont stop that
and my prediction was wrong...i was sure craig would announce he was checking into rehab
Why is he hanging around congress for another 30 days if he announced his resignation today? Anyone. Is he planning to introduce legislation legalizing peeping through public bathroom door cracks?
steve @ 99:
There are as may differin' philosophies inside the Democratic Party as there are members. Same can be said of the Republicans. But the parties are made because of the willingness of the members inside of each to compromise on those differences.
So while Nader and Paul might each similarly share "the periphery", do ya think that the guy who made his bones writin' Unsafe At Any Speed can compromise on the role of government oversight of the industrial sector with a guy who belives that there shopuld be no oversight? Seems to me the compromise would end up somewhere in the middle of the political spectrum. And, if that's so, why bother with a new party like you've described?
Don't get me wrong. There should be more parties in this country. But the party you describe is kinda absurd.
Wow.
For somebody who was so humbled he certainly didn't apologize much or very effectively.
He sounded like he still thought he was an important person, above the law and above his own hate filled rhetoric.
Wouldn't his next 30 days be better spent in some sort of right wing gay treatment center getting cured of teh gay instead of taking up space in Congress?
That's why Will Rogers said "I don't belong to any organized political party. I'm a Democrat."
Larry Craig is living proof that Republicans are a party dominated and comprised of smug, vicious hypocritical bigots.
Next.
I don't know how to do direct links, but here is an excellent article in The Guardian by Mark Schmitt entitled "The Real Hypocrisy of Idaho's Conservatives" (dated August 31).
http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/mark_schmitt/2007/08/the_real_hypocr...
Uncle Joe
Idaho's voting patterns ARE changing. In 2002, Craig won by about 133,000 votes, Kempthorne won the governor race by about 60,000. In 2006, Otter became governor by about 39,000, and Sali won his Congress race by only about 12,000. the trend is pointing towards a Democratic breakthrough, and Craig's stall tactics can only help.
this is a win for the republicans....
I hope they win likw this every week.
I was there , IT WAS GREAT ! I got some good pics ( I'll post some soon on my blog) of protesters and the lying fool . At the point where he said " ...I will resign effective blah blah..." I tried to give the "sexy-Whoo-Hoo" whistle , but my mouth was dry so you almost don't hear it on TV but the crowd did and started cheering . Oh yeah , just before he started speaking , this lady behind me yelled " Don't resign Larry ! " , I immediately yelled " DO ! " , she yelled " DON'T ! " , so I yelled back " DO! ,,, OK ?" " throwing up my hands and shrugging in ' I'll keep going as long as you ' to her and she shut-up . As he was getting in his SUV to leave , I was clicking multi-pics and got one of him pushing a camera-man away ! Just before he got in I yelled : " Larry , this is what a Holier-Than-Thou life gets you , caught living a LIE ! " , I had So Much FUN ! I wore my Awol Bush T-shirt (from LegitGov.org) and for a bit , made eye contact with , then stood with my back to Major Garrit (sp?) of Faux Snooze during his break so he could read my shirt and get a taste of in-your-face Blue-Idaho . BTW, Dana Bash of CNN seemed to be in a foul mood , could it have been the younger CNN news woman who ate up all of the air-time?
Cantor de Mambo @ 88:
Aside from the fact the repukes are doing a bang-up job without Larry's help, bets are on 8-08 as the most disruptive time he could choose to finish the job.
Dahgrostab'ph-r-i @ 11:
This is Idaho where there is one, and only one, qualification for office - that there's an (R) after your name.
I'd a ho once, but not in a lavatory! I like how some members of the audience cheered when he announced the resignation in detail. David Vitter should be asked to leave as well but of course, he was just paying for sex with hookers while espousing "Family Values" so, I guess that's okay! At least he's not a homo like me right? Pathetic! Gays just want to get married, it's all the closet folks who want to delve into roadstop/park/restroom sex. Have we swapped roles in the night or have we always been distinctively honest, lawful and respectable citizens?
I hope Larry Craig will be able to stop lying to himself and his family. Perhaps he will move to the Castro and become part of the community. He will not be safe in Idaho.
Repugs have to accept homosexuality as real life. Fucking REALITY.
Delusional fuckers are a 7 year long walk through a nightmare and the whole world pays for it with simple joys shattered and full of grief.
BoiseNick @ 110:
Did he cry? I just want to see these guys pissed off and crying!!!11!!
Steve @ 114:
No shortage of gays in Boise. But don't hold your breath waiting for Craig to come out. Ain't going to happen.
I am not resigning, nor have I ever resigned..........
...let me repeat, I am not resigning!!!!!!!!!!
Good riddance. One less bigot in the Senate.
HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO HEHEHE HOMO HEHEHEHEHEHE HOMO
miss_kitty @ 8:
Craig was busted before he saw it cumming too.
na na na na, na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye....
StirFry @ 83:
Vitter won't resign. He's going to stay to face the voter's wrath in the next election. Then Vitter can join Craig in the private sector where Vitter can put on his diaper and crawl around on the floor while Craig tells him what a naughty, nasty little boy he has been.
seevee.
ill believe it when i see it
you make it sound like the vote differential means alot, however, you are not taking idahoe's tiny population into account
the new repug party is populated by fools who vote based on some moral code that doesnt exist and against their own best interests
remember....a significant number of these idiots still believe that sadaam had something to do with 9/11, that wmd's were found in iraq, and that bill clinton is the one great satan
they will now stand up and shout to the rafters how they remove the pervs in their midst, while the dems coddle theirs
and they will turn around and elect another corrupt repug in the next election....
you heard it here first
BK @ 119:
One less self loathing homosexual hypocrite in the senate.
Uncle Joe,
Hope springs eternal baby! I know the population of Idaho (1.3), but the tide's turning. Lots of new folks moving into the state actually have functional grey matter. I'm not saying it's going to happen right now, but the political landscape of the entire Rocky Mountain region is changing, and it is a welcome trend.
I'm really suprised that he left. I'm wearing my tap shoes in homage.
Webster @ 12:
Bottom line. Vitter is from a state with a Democratic governor. Craig's from a state with a Re-puke gov. It's as simple as that
Also, Vitter isn't up for re-election next year.
Vitter was not charged with a crime and he did not plead guilty to a crime. That was Craig's mistake - pleading guilty.
The only reason the RepubliCONs urged Craig to resign because Republicans knew they had no chance keeping that Republican seat in 2008. They have 22 seats up-for-grabs for the 2008 elections, while Democrats have only 11. I predict the Republicans lose over half of those seats to Democrats.
abarts @ 127:
Tap shoes might have saved him. If he had just stepped outta the stall and broken into a timed step or a buck and wing, he might have convinced the cop he was just practicing his routine.
miss_kitty @ 116:
I was hopin' but , no tears (for his fears?) from the soon-to-be former Senator . You can see some of his emotions tho , in the pic I took of him pushing the camera-man WITH HIS OWN MICROPHONE ! check it out , , ,
[If you would like to send us some pictures from the presser you can e-mail them to the site monitor email address at the top/left of the C&L homepage. Thanks.]
Dahgrostab'ph-r-i @ 11:
Idaho. Their high point is the yearly potato festival.
Ruthless People @ 121:
reminds me of a joke I heard at work the other day :
" what do you do if you come across a US Senator in a men's room ?" ------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------you WIPE him off !--------------------------------------

Angry Black Man @ 130:
With the new replacement Senator, they're hoping this will be swept under the radar by the 2008 election.
What's to "fight"? His own guilty plea? It's sad enough that some folks are driven to impersonal sex in bathrooms but think of the shame to this man and his family. Oh, he'll get retirement but no kushie jobs as a lobbiest, consultant or pundit; no presence on Fox News; no gentle and respected retirement amid the folks back home. No loner Mr. Important. Punishment enough?
Wow this guy can talk.... blah blah blah.
You'd think he just won something the way he thanks the Academy.
Some helpful terminology on the subject-
COTTAGING: The use of public toilets as a venue for meeting sexual partners.
CRUISING: looking for sex, especially in public restrooms.
TEA-ROOM/T-Room: A public rest room homosexuals frequent for sex.
AC/DC: bisexual (or a homosexual who hides his lifestyle).
AUNTIE: an aging homosexual.
FISH WIFE: a male homosexual’s real wife.
GAY DIRT: an attractive young man paid by the police to trap homosexuals.
This whole thing disgusts me.
Here is a guy that was, or was not, seeking - what? At worse (or best) a blow-job. An idiot (to be sure) with 23 years of public service to his country that wanted to get off. AND, he did, or did not, signal a guy next to him he was, or was not, hot for a bit of hanky panky. For this his homophobic moron Republican friends bury him and we "progressives" laugh.
This guy did nothing wrong. STUPID yes but WRONG no. Should he resign, yes for stupidity. BUT this is a tragedy. It's time the state got our of our bedrooms and washrooms.
If Clinton keeps his pecker in his pants Gore wins, the world TODAY is an almost unrecognizably safer place. American over-reaction to personal sexual behavour has cost the US big time in the past and the horrific over-reaction to this incident shows the country still acts like a six year old child. Grow up.
klunk @ 66:
You two need to increase your Prozac dosage. He pled guilty to a crime. Sentors should know better than to commmit crimes, they are lawmakers. Enough said? The circumstances are irrelevent, he committed a crime and then lied about it.
It is always controversy when a lawmaker or a law enforcer breaks the law. Personally, I couldn't give a hoot about his sexual preference (or orientation). But when you align yourself with the Christian conservatives--who believes gay sex is immoral and have no place in our culture--then you should be under heavy scrutiny for being gay.
Chris @ 135:
And they will nominate another anti-gay hypocrite to fill the seat, and Idahoians will elect him as Senator because red states are filled with homophobes. It amazes me that the nation is at war, going bankrupted, and liberty is at stake, but you can still get a bozo elected if he promises to suppress gays.
I am a native Idahoan and am happy to see Larry Craig leaving office.....It has little to do with if he is gay or not....I dont like the idea that he has proven himself to be a liar.....I am neither democrat or republican.....I do not align with either party....to me both are conglomerate of good, bad and scumbags....that simply is hard to tell the good from the bad....I just hope whom Governor Otter choses for replacement better represents the people of Idaho.....We have a fellow here by the name of John Peavey that would be a wonderful choice and another in Bruce Newcomb....best wishes Governor Otter......
Edwin @ 139:
the "crime" of soliciting sex?.... bwahahahaha.... yes, he was a senator and he should have known better than to agree to such an admission... and imho, if he were actually "innocent", he would have adamantly denied such solicitation was his intent... his response was driven by the guilt of indulging in an act which he's publicly decried... clearly making him an imbecilic hypocrite and unfit for leadership... this was NOT the self-evident point raised by JustMe and which you appear fixated upon...
the fact of the matter however, and the issue that was pointed out by JustMe, is the mere existence of such a so called "crime", which is nothing more than the manifestation of neuroticisms as indulged in by a prozac addicted society seeking to deny the effects of behaviours which drive such self-conscious obsessiveness over otherwise "normal acts" between two consenting adults...
there should not have been a "crime" in the first place... although, it's no surprise that this "mild" distinction would escape you while attempting to prescribe a drug you've apparently discovered serves as a useful aid in mitigating your own discomfort over such issues... ;-)
Mylegacy @ 138:
EXACTLY!!!!.. thank you :-)
I wish the man well.
Ok one down but what about David Vitter the hooker screwing hypocritical adulterer who remains in office. I guess adultery is a forgivable sin in the GOP. Family values my ass!
Another self hating gay bites it. Who cares?
But, the fact that the Repugs so viciously turned on one of their own, and they already knew about him, says volumes about the conservatard movement.
The Repugs also knew about Rep. Foley, but only dumped him when his behavior was made public.
Values? We don't need no stinking values!
One of two things, the way I see it...
Either - Larry Craig is guilty. And as a former Senator who advocated so-called "family values" laws intent on suppressing the American homosexual community, he got caught by the incredibly efficient, albeit inhumane, system of police procedures he's personally advocated for...
Or - Larry Craig is not guilty. And is one of possibly hundreds, possibly thousands, possibly more - who have been unjustly arrested and detained by an incredibly efficient, albeit inhumane, system of police procedures he's personally advocated for years...
I agree with many posters, including "just-me", that Mr. Craig's actions should not be illegal. It is currently illegal, and I believe should continue to be illegal, to actually engage in consensual sex in a public restroom. I don't want to walk in on that, and I don't want my kid walking in on that. Heterosexual, Homosexual or whatever else...
I don't believe it should be illegal to merely attempt solicit consensual, non-prostitutional sex in a public restroom. Further, it should not be illegal to coincidentally or accidentally project the perception of body language that is sometimes used to initiate discussions which sometimes lead to consensual, non-prostitutional sex - even if said body language occurs in a public restroom.
Nothing Mr. Craig did... should be illegal. What did he do? He tapped his feet. He spread his legs. He cleared his throat. He flashed a wedding ring. THAT'S IT! THIS SHOULDN'T BE ILLEGAL!
Yet it is... because of laws that men like Mr. Craig passed. He and his GOP extremist buddies (like Mark Foley) made their beds, and as far as I'm concerned they can rot in them.
Dotty Gale @ 39:
Not his staff....don't you mean Cash. JCB
Dotty Gale @ 39:
Or perhaps he wants one more shot (pun intended) in the men's room at Reagan Airport on the public's expense.
Hey. Who pays for their flights when commuting home? Was he having sex on taxpayer's time and money?
I want to feel sympathy for a phony, two-faced liar but....
I can't.
He built the box he's trapped himself in.
Get out of the closet, Larry. Quit stalling. I hear Chorus Line is looking for new tap dancers. Craig out to audition. With that wide stance of his, he's a shoe-in. Tap tap tap.
I hear gay men actually have places where they can meet one another and go to hotels and cool places like that. Who'da thunk?
