First!
I absolutely remember this show, this scene, and I even remember thinking, bla bla bla. But now, it's so true and relevant. M*A*S*H kept us aware of things back then that we didn't even realize were topical now. Wowza.

Before M.A.S.H. there was Catch-22
What are you talking about? America's not going to be destroyed.
- Never?
- Well... Rome was destroyed.
Greece was destroyed.
Persia was destroyed.
Spain was destroyed.
All great countries are destroyed. Why not yours?
The U.S. vs. John Lennon
Enjoy

Open thread, right? I mean no offense to gay people, only hypocrites.
I just had a thought. If self-hating gay people who are Republicans are the Log Cabin Republicans, should we refer to the self-hating Republicans who are gay as the Bathroom Stall Republicans?
E @ 6:
I'd think johns includes all, including Vitter.
E @ 6:
WTF!
Is Smokey the Bear a repug? I say this because he a freakin liar.
He knows damn well people aren't the only ones setting wildfires.
that guy shows up on the fox oppinion channel all the time
Don1one @ 7:
Is Vitter a very dirty boy gay?
America is devouring itself from the inside out. Our cultural, intellectual and productive output has been disabused and is rapidly degenerating. We have little left to offer the world. What we have is growing economic inequality, injustice, creeping authoritarianism, conformity and mediocrity. It's a long, slow slog to third world status and the end of an empire from here on out. Look out Rome, here we come.
This isn't about the clip, or whatever you folks are talking about, but I just watched Lieberman basically endorse McCain or Giuliani on Fox News. He said either one, with McCain being the first name he mentioned. He also said that the repubs had a better grasp, etc. Prior to that, ol' Joe said that Edwards was wrong with his comment about the war being a bumper sticker. Typical fox and republican method of taking the comment out of context and changing Edwards' meaning when he said it.
Joe said that he would make offer his final endorsement after the parties selected their candidates, and that party doesn't matter.
I guess that should finally convince anyone who still thought that Joe might have been a Democrat in his heart that they were wrong. Joe is and has been a republican for a long time.
tHeGaMeOfLiFe @ 10:
Nah. Just another guy throwing stones from his glass house of "family values" why going on about "sacred vows."
Yet another reason why you can never watch too much M*A*S*H.
Here's another classic...

ain't it the truth! Wars come to an end but War doesn't, and that's sad to think after how many thousands of years and we still can't stop fighting? Sounds like the make up for a failed experiment to me.
prophetic clip.
seatech1 @ 12:
since about 1998!
Snowball @ 11:
yes, the boosh family plan is working!
Universal Soldier by Buffy Sainte-Marie
He's five feet two and he's six feet four
He fights with missiles and with spears
He's all of 31 and he's only 17
He's been a soldier for a thousand years
He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an atheist, a Jain,
a Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew
and he knows he shouldn't kill
and he knows he always will
kill you for me my friend and me for you
And he's fighting for Canada,
he's fighting for France,
he's fighting for the USA,
and he's fighting for the Russians
and he's fighting for Japan,
and he thinks we'll put an end to war this way
And he's fighting for Democracy
and fighting for the Reds
He says it's for the peace of all
He's the one who must decide
who's to live and who's to die
and he never sees the writing on the walls
But without him how would Hitler have
condemned him at Dachau
Without him Caesar would have stood alone
He's the one who gives his body
as a weapon to a war
and without him all this killing can't go on
He's the universal soldier and he
really is to blame
His orders come from far away no more
They come from him, and you, and me
and brothers can't you see
this is not the way we put an end to war.
Donovan's Version
Dana @ 15:
Rod Serling had some really f'd-up experiences. Talk about making lemonade (no sugar) out of lemons. His "Seven Days in May" (he did the screenplay) is well worth renting.

War keeps the production lines moving. Stuff never wears out cause it get blowd up good.
AJ Fan @ 22:
It's funny, but I was recently told that it's Smokey Bear; no "the". We've all been saying it wrong for years. So really, you all just might be putting words and ideas into the mouth of the wrong bear.
Somewhere out there, an overlooked c-list bear, named Smokey THE Bear, weeps in the throes anonymity.....
Bonkers @ 24:
Ah! I stand corrected!
http://grovers-aunt.tripod.com/Smokey_The_Bear-224.jpg
Is this "Open Thread" or "Open THE Thread." Because if i come onto this site to argue i need the facts!
Bonkers @ 25:
But wait!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smokey_Bear
So the question is when the Little Golden book came out. It looks as though the story that I loved as a kid was based on a real bear that survived a forest fire and then was name AFTER the fictional Smokey Bear who had already been around since 1944. By that point, the name had been widely misunderstood to be Smokey THE Bear and the writers of the children's book were clearly two of many people to make the same mistake.
Gee, I feel better!
xoites defends Constitution @ 26:
thanks for the good chuckle!
LOL-ing
Here is the camp song we sang (as best as i can recall it):
Smokey the bear
Smokey the bear
Growlin'
And a prowlin'
And a sniffin'
At the air
He can spot a fire
Before it starts to flame!
That's why they call him Smokey
And that's how he got his name!
Use this to tell a troll or someone you love to STFU (in the spirit of last night's LNMC with 'Chet' ):

I used to have a poster with Smokey Bear holding a chain saw and the caption was:
Remember, only you can prevent the forest service.
The Brits leave Basra.
"There's a significant amount of abandoned mines out there that are hazardous to the public's health," she said....
E @ 6:
you were close, but the real term gays use is tearoom, so they would be
tearoom repuglicans.
StirFry @ 30:
Truly comprehensible but can't we come up with something a little more swave-a and de-boner?

Have anybody seem this this video already? I
If this is true, how come I haven't heard the required amount of noise that it should deserve?
Are Americans apathy so deep that no one is raising hell about this?
Everyone has lost interest in the concentration camps Halliburton is building for all of us. If you wan't to see them, here is a video.
Also included is a brief history of FEMA's transformation, and various dry runs conducted by the police state.
A White House adviser basically tells homeowners to sink or swim.
M*A*S*H* was one of the best shows I ever saw when I was younger.
I'm only 24; so I obviously didn't see it in its normal run - but I watched it a lot on Nick at Night growing up. Fantastic and funny. And most importantly of all - very real.
Rumsfeld grilled by audience member in Atlanta.
Tequila @ 33:
"A ten-year old girl has spent a night at the bottom of a mine-shaft, which is the most horrific thing I can think of."
Hmmm....try a bit harder. There are many many many many more things going in the world which are much worse.
JJohnson @ 40:
I spent a year after college in '96-'97 teaching in Croatia. And aside from an abbreviated highlight show of the Super Bowl, the more important TV program there was the back-to-back episodes of M*A*S*H each day from 4 to 5. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed it. I loved being there, but getting a bit of (good) English-language TV was wonderful.....although watching the Simpsons once a week and laughing at the jokes before the kids could laugh at the subtitles was also wonderful.
Bonkers @ 24:
Does that really matter that Smokey has a first and last name? There is another famous Smokey played by Chris Tucker in the movieFriday.Funny as hell.
The guy should've gone with a follow-up when Rumsfeld was discussing chemical weapons. For example, I would've said, "If him having them was such a danger, why did you sell them to him 25 years ago?!"
xoites defends Constitution @ 26:
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I respectfully disagree with the premise of the "Universal Soldier" song. It is not the soldier, alone, who justifies and perpetuates war across the centuries.
It is the politician. Clad in the armor of State, mantled with the self-righteousness of Religion (don't forget that the Bible not only describes wars, but speaks of them as just and even being waged at God's direction), they are the ones who set policy and the course of a nation. By engaging in slam-the-door diplomacy and lying to themselves about their motives, it is the politican who directs us towards war.
The soldier is not always William Calley; sometimes, he is Pat Tillman, or those in Walter Reed Hospital (or in flag-draped coffins) - neglected by the very state that sent them to war.
Violence will likely remain a part of the human equation because we are hunters (or were). Violence is easy; rational thought is difficult.
xoites defends Constitution @ 29:
That's how he got his name?
He's definitely a corndog repug. He's lying again.
Let me point this fairy tale out, spot a fire Before it starts to flame!...is he Zeus?
Thing about it, he's a character talking to adults (the 28%ers) or, there's an abundant amount of pyromaniacal kids (I shudder.)
Who knew there was a shirtless baby Smokey? Not I.

Yep, I'm sure he will be seeing the real war theater, aren't you? Plastic Labor Day turkeys for everyone.

pissed off patricia @ 50:
Surprise visit like sneaking in unnoticed so he doesn't get his coke snorting, deserter ass shot off? It's your war Georgie. What are you hiding for? I thought the surge was working? I thought we've been making progress for the last four years. You should be proud.
He should be arrested the moment he sets foot back in the USA.

I just do not understand how southerners continue to be loyal republicans when republicans insist on letting our homes and livelihood go straight to the debbil.
Lemme get this straight: we can keep requesting 80 billion more every few months to continue a war that I'm still confused about what with all the double speak and nonsensical rhetoric, but, we have to let our own region continue to suffer after 2 years, that 114 billion for the entire coast, for the entire rebuilding, is far too much...
"The president secretly flew 11 hours to this air base in a remote part of Anbar province, bypassing Baghdad in a symbolic expression of impatience with political paralysis in the nation's capital. The gesture underscored the U.S. belief that the spark for progress may come at the local level."
Why didn't he visit the market in Baghdad - you know, the one that's just like being back at a farmer's market in Indiana?
