This Week's In Memoriam
This morning's In Memoriam on ABC's This Week includes the passing of Luciano Pavarotti, Republican Congressman Paul Gillmore and former Republican member of Congress, Jennifer Dunn. At the end, as they do every week, list the names of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Last week the Pentagon released 21 names, this week it was 18...

Good for them. PBS' NewsHour runs names and pictures of slain servicepeople as they become available, normally at least once per week. On the larger lists, there's generally at least one person in their 40s and one who's only 19, but all of them dead far too young.

Proof the surge is working!!! Less dead this week. Yeehaw, now go shoppin'!
Also in Memoriam -- The Constitution of the United States.
#2 Censored Fan: Just disappear will you. You are repugnant and obviously an ignoramous.
I have a feeling that the defense dept. has been "low-balling" the figures of both the dead and the wounded until the "surge" report is delivered. Then it will be back to situation normal for the administration.
This sounds very cold, but I don't trust any one of them as far as I can throw them.

Thanks so much for posting this. I like the segment and missed it this week.

Interesting that both the images they are using are fakes.
the cons only care when one of their country club chums dies. Not men and women who allow them to get "serious" billing by Vietnam avoiding pundits
sconset @ 4:
Now play nice.
But Tony Snow said that we aren't dying in Iraq anymore...
LibertyLover @ 11:
Ya but he also said he has to quit his cushy overpaid job with full benefits, because he can't afford to pay for his medical coverage. Tony isn't very bright.
more blood on our hands...
Wasn't number 2 censored comment's comment supposed to be sarcastic? It 's an echo of what BushCo told us to do in the wake of 9/11 ...
Author Madeline L'Engle (A Wrinkle In Time, etc.) also died this week. In that book she painted a disturbing portrait of an Orwellian world that was brought down by 3 children and their interest in science. It bears rereading.
Suzy @ 14:
Thanks Suzy and you are right. It was sarcasm.
as mentioned by Bataccio, PBS runs a memoriam at the end of the news hour. All soldiers have their picture with the personal data. the presentation is given in silence...no soft music theme. each soldier, one at a time, on the screen. this has had an unnatural and overpowering effect on me. i can't help but think of the lives represented and how each one had a story. i am often brought to tears. that's just me. look at their faces...these are American lives. not just a name on the screen. kudos to ABC for their effort but "supporting the troops", especially at this poignant moment, should allow for us to SEE their faces when we acknowledge their sacrifice.
I find the [love-to-hate-it] NewsHour's honor roll a little more disturbing. It's put a face to the name and the age and makes the loss of these poor dumb SOBs even more disturbing.
Is it even remotely possible that these photos are what causes our crier-in-chief to weep every other day?
I sure hope so.

I broke in to express a similar comment to the two above. I have recently reread the L'Engle books. Her warnings in A Wrinkle EXACTLY reflect what our illiterate, ahem, president's principles and the stamp that he has already inflicted upon this once-free-spirited nation. Pity that her death was overlooked this morning. But, then, she's not a media darling, never did splash herself around. Only wrote books with brains. Who in this day and age would even know her name? Madeleine, your imagination and your care for this world live on.
What I'd like to know is when did the Famous and Political become more important than our soldiers......No one should get on that particular "in Memoriam"list except our soldiers...NO ONE!....all the others get plenty of publicity when they croak.....they should HONOR this list and leave it alone......better yet.....get us the fuck out of Iraq and lose the list entirely...
slightly off topic......geeezzz...The Repubs are droppin like flies now....or quiting.........maybe there is a invisible sky genie....
I am glad you are putting this up. I watch This week w/George almost every Sunday and this segment always gets my attention even when the other parts sometime become background noise.
Bush doesn't care about one of those deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. He still has this illusion of the just cause. He doesn't see the mess he's made and he's looking at Iran as a next step.
BTW, the U tube showing of James Brown and Pavarotti is hauntingly beautiful. Absolutely stunning.

Every time I see "In Memoriam", I think that each dead soldier's name should be engraved on a block of stone and tied to George Bush's neck so he can drag that weight behind him wherever he goes for the rest of his miserable life. Or tattooed on every visible part of his body, in red. Or maybe branded. This terrible waste of life should never pass unmentioned, ignored by the one responsible for it all.
