Obviously, the MoveOn campaign protesting the "White (House) Washing" of his testimony before the House is getting under the skin of many Republicans, like Duncan Hunter. But arguably, none so much as Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL). Not only did she use the opportunity during her opening statement to condemn the ad, when it came to her turn to question Petraeus and Crocker, she reminded her colleagues on the other side of the aisle that now would be a good time to distance themselves from MoveOn.

Ok, so the grammar wasn't standard, and the words weren't eloquent, but the speaker sure makes an interesting point!
Our society is saturated with us/them, in-group/out-group, for-us-or-against-us rhetoric that we really ought to take note of what the Congressman who should take it easy is saying. Tucker Carlson called for the LGBT community to distance itself from Larry Craig's behavior, as though the whole community was guilty by association until a profession of innocence. Moveon itself was called upon to distance itself from an offensive ad someone sent to them as an entry into an ad contest. Ros-Lehtinen wants Democrats to distance themselves from one liberal group's sentiments.
Well, the presumption of support by loose association is not merely ridiculous, but pernicious. Should African American leaders have to distance themselves from crime if one African American commits one? Should men be presumed to support rape when one is reported? We ought to watch out for this presumption whenever it is invoked, for it serves as great political red meat and fodder for dirty tricks. Hell, if I want to smear a political opponent, all I have to do is post somewhere some absurd and offensive statement in support of my opponent, and force him to distance himself from it publicly.

Bottom line--when the Republicans and their minnions (ie Fox Propaganda Network, etc) trash progressives for questioning this war and call them "anti-American" and "giving aid and comfort to the enemy" that is supposed to be justified. Even tho EVERY SINGLE ASSERTION the right wing has come up with about this war and occupation has been PROVEN to be false.
But when an organization like Moveon strikes back calling out Patreaus for the shill he has been (witness his op/ed weeks before the 2004 election that saved Bush's ass and, by the way was proven to be COMPLETELY WRONG) that is supposed to cross some kind of line. Bullshit. I commend Moveon for taking the gloves off and hitting these assclowns where it hurts. They wouldn't be crying about it if they didn't feel the pain.

I agree with Andy. After reading this thread, I'm embarrassed to be a liberal. Any dissent from trying not to be inhuman like right wing blog commenters is shouted down.
