Ouch. The Bushies can't get any love...even from the Pope!
Pope Benedict XVI refused a recent request by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss the Middle East and Iraq, Vatican sources say.
The Pope refused a request for an audience during the August holidays.
Senior Vatican sources told the BBC the Pope does not normally receive politicians on his annual holiday at the Castelgandolfo residence near Rome.
But one leading Italian newspaper said it was an evident snub by the Vatican towards the Bush administration. (h/t Michael)

The Pope was clear - this war is wrong, immoral, and that message doesn't change. Ultra conservative bishops in this country ignored the war and went after abortion and gay seminarians - there was a purge last year. - kind of weird. The Catholic Church is getting mighty close to declaring itself a peace church - one that will sanction no war as no war can now fulfill the just war criteria.
Benedict has never been shown to respect women in any except the most superficial manner. So part of me is happy that he humiliated the Bush administration and gave them no moral moment prior to going to the mIddle east. The other part of me is pissed that he - once again - ignores the power in a woman and pretends she is invisible.
We pray for a happy death for him - whenever it might come. He's old - really old.
There isn't anybody to replace him that will be much better. It's kind of depressing if you are Catholic - as I am. The ultra conservatives - almost all are wealthy old Republicans - do stupid things like build a Catholic city in Florida and create a university that no one actually attends. The younger ones hold on with their fingertips and live in the periphery of the church. In our diocese - litergists are the common scapegoat of the month. Firing anybody who might be gay or creative and hiring others who have no skills whatsoever seems the way of doing church. Our bishop - a member of the secretive Opus Dei and certifiable - has lost priest after priest. People are gathering without a priest, reading the word of God and breaking bread. It's imploding at the same rate as the Republican party. Princes of the Church - basically have no reasonable arguments left on many issues. Yet, on other issues - they are the only resonable voice. It feels a bit schizoid being Catholic these days.

A LOT is not reported in the US, in fact most of the important is NOT reported, especially regarding any positive abt Catholic Church, the most powerful of all, who keeps declaring Iraq war IMMORAL. Of foreign media sources "Guardian" and few others are OK, but the MAJOR problem is that Americans don't know foreign laguages, thus are destined for a very parochial pov in many ways. The Catholic News Service stated on September 20th the the Pope's refusal should not be seen as a snub because she came during a period when the Pope doesn't receive anyone and that it was "absolutely not" the intentions to rebuff Rice or signal disapproval with US policy in the Middle East.
But it looks like everyone wants to believe the leading Italian newspaper first before even considering the political bent of that paper.
The Pope has been against the war but he has agreed with things from this administration also.
