Cenk Uygur of TYT on the MoveOn Ad and WaPo's "Fact-Checking"
Cenk's had all he can take and he can't takes no more...
The Washington Post, in the interest of "neutrality" (remember their "balance" of Abramoff coverage?) decided to "fact-check" the MoveOn "General Betray-Us?" ad, and as would be expected, there was a disconnect between the facts (they agreed that MoveOn had it mostly correct) and the final score.

I sent my first $25.00 ever to MoveOn yesterday.
Thanks MoveOn.org for your ad!
Okay...I am sending more to Move.On...everytime I see they get bashed by Media- off goes another check- even a little bit helps them....and I will keep sending them money...the Dems are not getting ANY money until they learn WHAT the people want....( the 22 that voted against the Moveon ad will note get any of my money ..)
Wapo has trouble finding facts- remember what a great job they did investigating the WMD (myth) before the war...yeah..right.
Sent $100 yesterday. Beat ya! Cenk rocks.
Yup. This was another huuuuuuge victory for the "Democratic Minority" caucus of Democrats, who don't mind being run by Republicans.
Cenk, you rock.
I just can't read the words "Eli Pariser" or "MoveOn". Not because I don't agree with the politics, I do, but when I was on their mailing list I would get about 20 emails from them a day. I couldn't take it anymore! Since then, I just can't give all my love.
O U T S T A N D I N G
Has anyone found a list of who voted to censure moveon? Perhaps my googling skills are teh lame.
US Postal address for MoveOn, anyone? I signed the petition and would like to put my money where my mouth is. Thanks.
Yeah, where is there a list of these poodles?
Just heard on tv that moveon has gotten over a million dollars in donations since the Petraeus ad ran. Good for them! Could McCain raise that much money that fast? Doubt it.
If you saw the video from the NRA today when McCain was speaking, you gotta figure he's losing it. Someone (a lady) from code pink stood up and said something against the war. McCain got all excited and yelled, "We beat you yesterday. We beat you today and we'll beat you tomorrow!" Then he had this bizarre grin on his face like he had just done something spectacular. I guess shouting down a lady at his age is some kind of macho victory.
Here Here.
'Shove them up yer ass' indeed.
If you want to donate by check https://pol.moveon.org/donate/check.html
That was all very well said, Cenk.
Man, he sounds like I do when I am on my soapbox. I said "sounds like"; I aspire to be that good!
So MoveOn? Prepare for a donation that WOULD have gone to the Dems!
You reading that, Dem interns monitoring the blogs? Your bosses just lost a donation, if not a lifetime of donations, from this particular prole. You good-guy Dems who had the fortitude and brains to vote against this resolution (which was a COLOSSAL waste of time and MY tax dollars, thank you very much, Congress!):
if you ever, ever expect to see another red cent out of people like me, and OH YES INDEEDY the people in my life that I can influence and talk to about this stuff, you might want to get those 20 stupid, backstabbing ducks in a row or we'll eject them for you, next chance we get. Cleaning house means cleaning it all out, starting with GOPbots that were ejected in 2006 and moving on (so to speak) to DINOs if necessary.
I don't understand why Petraeus thinks he should get a pass. He took the Repug POLITICAL position and filtered his testimony to reflect that position. The facts don't back up his positions, and his disingenuous (can I call a genera a liar) arguments, positions and claims open him up as far as I'm concerned.
Now why are these points so hard for our congress and media to understand? They may have the prestige now, but if 80% of the country is against them, it won't be long until they are tossed out the door on their precious behinds, with the reputations, into the gutter. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand this.
Sent my $$ donation to MoveOn.org yesterday.
Cenk is spot on here. The Dems who voted for the condemnation of this AD (for chrissake!) just handed the Republicans the right to condemn all donations they receive from MoveOn. "What? you accepted money from THAT organization - why it's been condemned by a bi-partisan majority of the Senate!"
What the heck were these Dems thinking? Well, perhaps the Senate leadership is tired of the influence the "little people" have and wanted to put us in our place. Maybe the Senate leadership WANTS to taint the money - so as to keep the incumbents comfy.
Reid could have blocked this from going to the floor for a vote, he chose not to.
What we need are stronger leaders. This vote has helped identify those who are too weak for the fight ahead, they won't get MoveOn money anymore - this delights the Republicans who want to weaken our party, so I hope the Dems that voted for this are happy now. What short sighted idiots.
All my money is going to MoveOn from now on. Blue Dogs and Bush Dogs are hosed.
btw, I like this post over at the WaPo (follow link above):
The Moveon ad - no matter what you want to say - worked. People talked about it, the GOP is all up in arms and sounding whiny, and all now think "Betray-us" when they hear Petraeus. About time the Left started turning the dirty tricks the Right has used against us for 30 years back on them ... karma's a b*tch.
Posted by: Nick | September 20, 2007 11:00 AM
He makes a good point. As far as I am concerned, MoveOn is encouraging all of us to roll up our sleeves and start getting our hands dirty, which makes actions the lace-cuffed, lily-livered, brainless 20 Democrats who voted with the similarly lace-cuffed, chickenhawk, sandbox, crybaby GOoPers all the more shameful.
Sen. Boxer! Thank you for once again doing the right thing, btw. Proud to be a Californian.
Just got this email... HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN ONE DAY! AWESOME!
Hey, if not for the MoveOn.org ad, no amendments would've been passed by the Senate this week.
Bonkers @ 19:
I want to qualify this, however:
I don't want to get into dirty tricks (that is not what I am about or what I want the party I support to be about) and I don't think that MoveOn's ad was a dirty trick. I am talking about walking the walk and talking the talk and smacking these mouth-breathing, mongrel 'publicans on the nose with a rolled up newspaper (ad).
Call Freedoms Watch @ 1-877-222-8001 or www.Freedomswatch.org and give them a piece of your mind. Or at last tie up their phone lines. Thy're running anti Move On ads. I did and it felt great!
Shouldn't MoveOn.org be denounced for their plagiarism of MSDNC gameshow hostess Keith Olbermoronn? Long before MoveOn.org ran their ad, Olbermoronn on August 16, 2007 bellowed: "The Petraeus report. Less Petraeus; more betray us." http://www.olbermannwatch.com/archives/2007/09/general_betray.php#more. Also, on the same August 16, 2007 edition of Olbermoronn's self-described "newscast" (ROTFLMAO!), Olbermoronn's screen read: "#5 Will Petraeus Betray Us." Shouldn't Olbermoronn demand an immediate apology from MoveOn.org for their plagiarism of Olbermoronn's "thoughts" and words?
I'm embarrassed to say that the two senators from my state (Arkansas, who are Democrats by the way) voted for the that absurd amendment. It's amazing. One vote they tried to preserve the Constitution by voting for habeas corpus, next, they hate Freedom of Speech.
We need to take back our political parties.
I thought OlbermannWatch died a sad pathetic death.
Tom @ 24:
You see, we're Democrats (both liberal and progressive). Only Republicans would sue each other.
Bonkers @ 19:
I would be too, if not for Dianne "Weeny" Feinstein.
Cenk is one of reason's best defenders. He always rocks
I renewed my registration w/MoveOn and sent them $50 today. NO more contributions
to any of the Dems...waste of my monies.
No leadership skills demonstrated by McCain during his mocking behavior today in front of the NRA..truly pathetic.
His staff will probably by tomorrow will have something out saying..what he meant to say was......
List me as another donator to Move On. You know, maybe those 22 Dems who voted to condemn the ad are secretly rooting for moveon.org? That, I suspect, is what Bill O'Reilly was doing when he gave the Daily Kos all that free advertising. They're working from within the system, people! Sneaky, but effective! *Wakes up from pot-induced stupor* Oh, wait. Nevermind...
Tom @ 24:
Great idea the Repugs have come up with: they think they should sue each other for agreeing with each other's points. Good strategery! Keep it up!
Tom @ 24:
You can go ahead and apologize for your thoughts, if you like.
Otay @ 28:
Agreed! Notice I only thanked Sen. Boxer.
But Feinstein is not enough on her own to make me less than proud of where I hail from. Now, get a few more people like Scharzenegger (sp?) in office and I might have to revisit my stance....
:)
Cenk - my new hero!!
Tom@24: Actually it was the troops in Iraq who started the Betrayus
The only question about the MoveOn ad that is important is if the groups membership went UP since the news? Hopefully someone here at C&L can ascertain if that is the case. Thanks :)
Good post. Cenk has it so right. Inside the beltway, the power structure is absolutely petrified at the audacity of groups like Moveon, blogs like C&L, Kos, etc. Because it is one message thay cannot control. THAT'S why they felt they had to slap down this ad so hard.
Backfired on 'em tho, didn't it. The earlier post with Schuster and Eli also was right on. Obviously Eli doesn't give a shit about the beltway cocktail "elite" and even Schuster had to get a chuckle out of that.
It's alright, Cenk! People be speaking with their checkbooks, a much better way to show how much they love 'em, anyway!
I just wrote Diane Feinstein to rant about her shameful vote condemning MoveOn.org. MoveOn will get my donations instead of DNC.
Strawberry @ 26:
"Tom" is it's only reader
I thought MoveOn did a fantastic job backing up the ad with link after link to sources.
http://pol.moveon.org/petraeus.html
It's a shame that not only the msm, but even most of the blogs that have defending the MoveOn ad have basically ignored that. Sentence by sentence, they back it up the ad with source after source for avery point they made.
IMHO, after all of the front page articles WaPo did blasting the GOP Betray Us=Traitor meme, their after the fact checking post on WaPo.com doesn't even come close to making amends.
janefromhell @ 8:
The Senate didn't vote to censure anyone. They voted to agree ("sense of the senate" - non binding BS) that they (Senators) shouldn't say mean things about the military. There was no mention of the MoveOn ad or any other, anywhere in the resolution.
ldzppln @ 44:
Check it out yourselves - the press has been saying this resolution was set specifically to condemn the MoveOn ad, but it wasn't. Just more LIES.
ldzppln @ 44:
Almost makes it worse, in the broader sense. They want to shut down all criticism, i.e. free speech. And they call US the traitors? Puh-leez!
hey tom, when are you going to enlist?
i just saw a very sophisticated ad denouncing MoveOn on cnn.
there is a lot of money behind this. this is very calculated.
they are trying to swift boat MoveOn.
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/9/21/115032/846
This is moveon's latest ad in the NYTimes.
"ass-kissing little chickenshits"
Awesome. Bring it on move on.
The ad is carefully structured so that the factual assertions are all in the middle paragraph. And as was pointed out, these claims are all carefuly document. In the statement, "Most importantly, General Petraeus will not admit what everyone knows: Iraq is mired in an unwinnable religious civil war" the use of the word "everyone" is rhetorical, an assertion of opinion. It is not by its nature not subject to "fact checking." WaPo is pathetic.
I want a list of the DEMS that voted on this stupid fucking thing!!!
carefulwiththatAXEeugene @ 48:
I wish someone would take out an ad using George's joke about not finding any weapons of mass destruction.
This will not play was well as it did 3 years ago. It wasn't a gaffe and it was in George Bush's rehearsed words. A play that our tax dollars paid for.
And it made fun of the fact that the war being fought over WMD was just a joke.
I love Cenk. I want to have his little Cenk babies. :oD
The boys in the club are making their fortunes in Iraq. So many people dead for a few people's fortune.
i don't want to give them traffic, but this is the groupd that's running ads against MoveOn
on cnn.

FYI, that is a fake ad, not a real moveon ad.
No one should have posted that as real without mentioning somewhere it's satirical.
they are planting the idea that MoveOn is far-left to those who really don't pay attention.
later on in the campaign they will be attacking candidates for being
associated with MoveOn.
they were just waiting for MoveOn to stick out
it's neck, perhaps they even baited them. you know as well as i do that it doesn't matter
whether MoveOn was right or not. Just as the truth didn't matter with Kerry's service record,
Al Gores internet or lock box. Truth doesn't matter to the people they are aiming for. i don't know why it doesn't, but they know those people well and they play them like a violin.
hopefully people are immune to it by now, but people fall for the dumbest shit.

Long live Max Cleland and long live MoveOn.org!
I gave MoveOn a hundred dollars today.
I just sent $100 to MoveOn ! Ha ! ! !

Email from MoveOn:
Dear MoveOn member,
Yesterday, an amazing thing happened. After the Senate's shameful vote, and after President Bush called MoveOn "disgusting," our email started to fill up with messages like this one:
I'm currently in Iraq. I do not agree with this war, and if I did support this war, it would not matter. You have the RIGHT to speak the truth. We KNOW that you support us. Thank you for speaking out for being our voice. We do not have a voice. We are overshooted by those who say that we soldiers do not support organizations like MoveOn. WE DO.
YOU ARE OUR voice.
And then came the donations. By midnight, over 12,000 people had donated $500,000—more than we've raised any day this year—for our new ad calling out the Republicans who blocked adequate rest for troops headed back to Iraq.
The message from MoveOn members was loud and clear: Don't back down. Take the fight back to the issues that matter.
So today we're shooting for a very ambitious goal: Reach $1 million so we can dramatically expand the campaign we launched yesterday going after politicians who support this awful war. Can you chip in $30 toward our goal?
https://pol.moveon.org/donate/donate.html
All day, messages from vets and military family members kept pouring into our email, many of them aimed at the Senate:
I have given a son to this country. My brother, my father, my uncle have all served honorably and bravely. I am a loyal American. I am outraged and sick to death of the tactics this administration uses to try to silence dissent to a war that is unjust, built and maintained on lies, political power, and greed. I was content to let others fight more loudly, but no more.
–Sharyn W., NC
I am a prior soldier who served in Iraq for 13 months, and am now an expecting mom with a husband who is deployed in Baghdad. I don't think I can ever forgive the Bush administration for the lies that tricked America into this war and hurt my family so badly. I am ashamed of those American politicians who would condemn an organization for practicing the Freedom of Speech that so many soldiers have died for.
–Danielle B., OH
As a US Navy veteran and an Iraq war veteran of over a year I want to ask, What has happened to us? What has happened to our voice? Where is this country going with stopping free speech and free press? ... Every time I think of the long nights I had in Anbar remembering what I was fighting for, well here it is....
–Ahmad H., LA
These folks have made sacrifices many of us can't imagine. Their charge to us was clear: keep speaking the truth about how President Bush and the Republicans have betrayed our trust.
So we're going to expand our ad campaign— ...
This guys hilarious.
Its soooooooo refreshing to hear someone come right out and tell those "pricks" at the WAPO to jam it up their collective arseholes.
Stop Balancing The Truth
If you corner some animals, mainly a cat, they will come out fighting. I am very proud of MoveON and they will get may next donation. In fact, I going to make sure it is the same donation I usually give to the Democratic Party.
There is a lot at play with the MoveON issue. Cenk was right on to deface the Washington Post for their "I am one of the boys" attitude toward the truth. Lately I have noticed the media have been enlisted to do Bush's dirty work. Believe me, Washington Post knows the truth, but their sick sense of fair and balanced will not allow them to be forthcoming about it. It, the truth, would tilt the issue in the Democrats favor.
It is a sad day that the truth is put aside to keep an image of symmetry among the two major political Parties.I guess the Democrats have too much of an advantage coming into the 2008 elections. The Republican truths will hurt them even more. The media has a vested interest in keeping the debates interesting and not one sided. This has been going on for a while, and the next time you hear the press make the claim "the Democrats are just as fucked up as the Republicans" you can bet the media feels the playing field is too much in the Democrats favor.
Still, I see the Republicans very hard at work trying to split the Democratic Party at the seams. They are driving a serious nail into the the Democratic Party, and the Dems have to be very careful they don't play into their own demise.
Joseph
I give WaPo 4 of these:

Fan-freaking-tastic!
Hey - I want the snail mail address too. That way, I can send copies of my Move-on check to my Senator (Feinstein) and other weak-kneed freaks in the Democratic (Cocktail) Party.
I can watch Cenk since the stupid stunt (serious law suit?) against Stephen Colbert. Like he's the only sci-fi nerd to equate Klingons with honor.
anonymousryan @ 69:
CAN'T WATCH, I mean
Joseph @ 66:
Too late. Harry Reid the "leader" let this waste-of-time bill come to the floor to be voted on, and then 20 weasel Bush Dogs voted yes; and thus Harry played right into the Repug frame.
Yes the same Harry who didn't make the Repugs actually filibuster for defeat of the Habeas Corpus bill but gave them the 10 vote advantage for free.
The same Harry who personally condemned MoveOn.
Isn't it great to have "leaders" like Harry?
redcat Says: hey tom, when are you going to enlist?

Been there; done that, son. Four years in the U.S. Army infantry (including combat). You?
at first they withdrew his name just before it went for a vote (not enough votes to carry his nomination), then king george actually gave the swift boat fund-er, what ever his name was, a "recess appointment" , i think they call it that, so the man is now a US ambassador.
no outrage, just rewards if you are a repube.
From whatreallyhappened.
"Memo to Democrats: you control the Congress. That means you can decide what bills come to the floor for votes--and what don't. So why, in a week where Republicans blocked the restoration of habeas corpus, voting rights for DC and adequate rest time for our troops between deployments, did you allow Republicans the opportunity to score a cheap PR stunt by approving a resolution condemning a week-old newspaper ad by Moveon.org--on the same day Republicans once again voted to keep indefinitely continuing the Iraq war?!"
Can someone tell me how congress can call themselves "representatives" when they have an 11% approval rating?
Tom @ 72:
Do you have some kind of proof?
Seriously. When? Where?
naschkatze @ 9:
O..K. No takers so I took the plunge on-line.
Tom @ 24:
nice try oh compassion troll

ldzppln @ 44:
I could swear I read that Boxer proposed a different version that would have censured republican tactics also and it was rejected...Anyway thanx Cly for the list of dems who voted against the ad...although a complete roll call would help to see who didn't vote, wasn't there, or actually stood up against it.
I love this guy- what a wild man! I'm a donor to the Dems and Move On. Move On gets the money this time and EVERY TIME they rub the Repugs nose in the truth! Move On has balls, The Dems? Not so much.............
Slow night when all we got is Cenk. Just kidding.....No I'm not, he sucks.
That was sweet, i fully expected Hulk Hogan and Randy Macho Man Savage to burst in and carry dood round on their shoulders!! 8P ... I share the man's outrage in other words!
I couldn't believe that Patrick Leahy supported this crap. It's just unbelievable. Especially since he sends me requests for money all of the time.
So I couldn't resist the urge to write him and tell him that his vote to censure moveon.org was a real wake up call for me. It woke me up to the need to send my hard earned money to moveon.org and not to him.
'nuff said.
Finally, an opinion piece with an adequate level of anger.

Damn all these warmongers and their pathtic pack of enablers.

Pathetic.
The fact checker.
Move On mirrors a retorical device used by Fox News every day and you call it an 'attack'. Sure, whatever you say WAPO.
The surge has not failed! On The Daily Show, a comedy mind you, they showed a clip of Bush's speech in January when we were told the surge would give the Iraqi government space to move a political solution, none of which has happened. Let's try this together. When you set out with a purpose and do not achieve that purpose, you can be said to have _______. I guess maybe you think it isn't lousy reporting not to point that out when you knew he was lying when he said it and you didn't point THAT out. ??? Yawn, why do I even look for logic and reason? Must be WAPO brand recognition.
The Fact Checker. :D I have a fact for you. It's a fact, that I no longer take you seriously enough, to even get upset by this nonsense.
I also sent my first $25.00 to MoveOn. I'm so sick and tired of being bullied by the republicans, and obviously the MSM won't call them on their dirty little political tricks or their blatant hypocrisy. All this feigned outrage over the MoveOn ad is truly disgusting and so incredibly transparent. Since the Senate is apparently going to start targeting dissenters, I think we better make sure they give the other side equal attention. There's plenty going on at Fox News to keep them busy with their little condemnation resolutions for quite some time. We should really stay on top of this. It's very important that the senate start passing resolutions to silence all those who might criticize a military leader, politician, or heaven forbid the president.
Wish both Bill Maher and Jon Stewart would do a piece on this lunacy.
I joined MoveOn because of the ad, and I'll be sending them money because they're doing what the Dems should be doing themselves.
I disagree with the ad a bit, but the reality that needs to be respected is that the ad is still free speech. People with sometimes even greater influence have said lots of more controversial/extreme claims/opinions than this case and that have gone unchallenged by Congress (see Fox News). The Senate has much more important issues to deal with -- MoveOn is no McCarthy, not in (a lack of) objectivity, not in extremity, not in influence.
Cenk has the right idea. Mockery is not used as often as it should be in response to stupidity. The next time a conservative neanderthal says something assinine, try responding with an exaggerated version of his voice, facial expression, hand gestures, and idiotic arguement. It will drive him to a frothing frenzy of invective like nothing else will. Bullies hate to be mocked.
Cenk is definitely an acquired taste. But, he is VERY RARELY wrong about anything in the US political sphere.
He brings the heat and we need more of that on the Left!
Mike
coleshack @ 92:
NO DOUBT!!!
I like this guy. He puts all this nonsense about MoveOn.org and the "enraged" hypocritical Republicans into context.
That was awesome!!! Keep tellin' it like it is! This is the kind of free speech that I'm
all about. Keep swinging that HAMMER CENK!! My wife just sent our check in too.
BRAVO MOVE ON!!!!
Cenk Uygur - you da man!
Long live Turkey! Long live the truth! Long live the U.S.A. (as soon as we can save it from the religious wack jobs and corporate thievery)!
I just got a fund-raising letter from the DCCC. I sent them a check with "zero" written on it, and a note at the top telling them to stop attacking their base and get some spines.
Thanks Cenk, it's nice to know I'm not alone.
Just sent Move On another $50 today in honor of Freedomswatch.
Sent Freedomswatch a e-mail explaining why Move On got money in their name. Bwaahaa

go back to the infantry they need more brain dead people to keep up the killing

So why don't they ever hold boosh's comments up to such parsings.
If they did that during the buildup perhaps we wouldn't be stuck between Iraq and a hard place.

He is maturing well at being a spokesperson for common fucking sense.
I cannot sufficiently express my disgust and confoundedness of our cartoon political 'leadership'. There just isn't enough time to put down all of the adjectives of disgust and mental dissonance caused by what the fuck I am witnessing.
The democratic "leadership's" weakness and treachery to their purpose has crossed the line, becoming a declaration of figurative war. I stand in solidarity with the many on this board who vow not to give a cent to the feeble cows, but instead to pour our resources into true and loyal
progressiveschampiones for the cause of common fucking sense.Here. Here.
May the high powers bless MoveOn.org.
