I'd really, really like to think that this sort of thing is limited to a few complete nutcases who are even fringe among fringe right wing groups. Sadly, I'm not so sure ("Macaca") that's actually the case.

Thankfully it's no longer possible to be anywhere near that overtly and violently racist in almost any company now, but how much of that general sort of sentiment is hiding under the surface (O'Reilly's recent "that black restaurant was just as nice as one run by white folks!" shock comes to mind) is sad to think.

Also, while freedom of speech is tremendously important, at what point do you cross from speech to inciting violence? I've never been entirely clear on where the line into criminal territory is crossed with this sort of thing...

It's this kkkind of hatred that makes me wonder sometimes if Lincoln did the right thing. I'm not talking about freeing slaves, I mean bringing the south into the Union!

This was bound to happen. I could see this reaction from hate groups from a mile away. At my highschool kids are starting to get very vocal on this situation from both sides and tensions are rising. Situations such as this bring racists out of hiding. I won't be surprise if copycat incidences occur.

Two thoughts:

1) no one says that the African American kids shouldn't be punished. But the problem is that the white kids who attacked the black kids were given far slighter punishment. This was a tit for tat situation in which the white kids were hardly punished at all but the book was thrown at the blacks.

I'm in total agreement, Mudshark. While violence in school should not be tolerated, let's not forget that the attack was not exactly unprovoked. Should the boys have found a better way to deal with their problems than to beat that boy up? Certainly, but even though they lost their tempers for a brief time, that doesn't mean that A) they are violent, bloodthirsty animals as some of the commentaries I have read have suggested, nor B) that they had any plans aside from just making this guy hurt. If they don't have any other marks on their records, give them the minimum punishment the school mandates and leave it at that.

First off I am from North Michigan and came from a polish immigrant town of Alpena, Michigan. A lovely paper mill town of many European ethnic groups living there when I was growing up there. There was not much to do up there but drink in bars and drive snowmobile in the winter and 4 wheeling in the summer.

Then I moved to Mt Pleasant and had my first taste of racial prejudice for being a white kid living in the afro-american dominated dorm area for students with children. One of the father wouldn't permit me to play with their afro-american daughter in the playground. I was 9 years old and didn't forget it. My best friend was afro-american, Kevin, and his father got wind of this and march the guy over to apologize to me and let me play with the rest of the kids. everyone knew what happen and made me part of the community. At age nine I never knew the concept of black or white, and just thought that my friend always had a better tan, while I end up with sunburn that summer. I guess I was lucky that a community stood up and took matter to watch out for the kids. I was lucky because it was in a college dorm mostly for people trying to get an education that also have children. I think education is the key to eradicate racism everywhere.

This experience has either scarred or sensitize me to the problem of racism. I dwell too much on the subject at times and it saddens me. If I was in a terrible accident and I need a blood tranfusion to keep me alive, and they ask what color of blood do I want? Would I frikkin care? No! If I need a donor organ to keep me alive, would I care what color of skin the donor is? No! Every human being is a potential friend, life saver, and a Hero. It's going to take every human being to say racism is for those that are living in fear from ignorance of what they do not understand.

Deborah Gross has some concern, and this I say to her, that a biracial child are the most beautiful because those child represent courage and strength of the child parent who willingly brought a child that was made out of love between them, that are so unique to each other and bonded during that moment when the love was conceived. The biracial child themselves are proof that we can all get along if we try.

I live in a small city just North of Detroit, where I was born and raised. I was doing my daily walk today and had a jarring experience. A young womn was walking toward me. She was a 20-something white woman. I am 55-years old and hardly "menacing" in appearance. This young woman looked at me,and walked into the street,in order to avoid having to pass me. When I had moved beyond her, she got back on the sidewalk and continued on her way. I stood there for a moment and just felt sad.

I think one of the best example my mom taught me is to never make racial or national jokes that are mean. That if anyone tells you a racial joke just to say the joke is stupid, and don't laugh. I lived in a polish area of the town.

Those are the subtle racism that goes un-notice by many everyday.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The FBI is reviewing a white supremacist Web site that purports to list the addresses of five of the six black teenagers accused of beating a white student in Jena and "essentially called for their lynching," an agency spokeswoman said Saturday.

Sheila Thorne, an agent in the FBI's New Orleans office, said authorities were reviewing whether the site breaks any federal laws. She said the FBI had "gathered intelligence on the matter," but declined to further explain how the agency got involved.

CNN first reported Friday about the Web site, which features a swastika, frequent use of racial slurs, a mailing address in Roanoke, Va., and phone numbers purportedly for some of the teens' families "in case anyone wants to deliver justice." That page is dated Thursday.

The Rev. Al Sharpton said in a statement Saturday that some of the families have received "almost around the clock calls of threats and harassment," and called on Gov. Kathleen Blanco to intervene.

A Blanco spokeswoman said the governor had asked law enforcement _ primarily state police _ to investigate.

"These people need more than an investigation. They need protection," the Rev. Jesse Jackson said. He said his organization would be in touch with President Bush's nominee for attorney general, Michael Mukasey.

"This is a test for the disposition of the Department of Justice to serve as an intervenor and a deterrent" to hate crimes and discrimination, Jackson said. He said federal marshals should protect the families.

Carolas Purvis, whose number was among three listed on the Web site, said she did not feel in danger. Purvis is the aunt of Bryant Purvis, who has yet to be arraigned. She said she has received a number of calls, some from people who say nothing, others to let her know that her number had been put on the site. One, Friday night, used the N-word to her young son, she said.

A dispatcher for the LaSalle Parish Sheriff's Department said no one in the office Saturday could say whether any threats had been reported.

Of the two other numbers listed as "active" on the Web site, one was not answered Saturday; the other yielded a constant busy signal.

On Thursday, thousands of demonstrators marched in a civil rights demonstration in support of the so-called Jena 6. The six black teens were arrested after a December attack on a white student _ the culmination of fights between blacks and whites.

Of the six teens arrested, five initially were charged with attempted second-degree murder; charges for four have been reduced as they were arraigned. Charges against the sixth teen, booked as a juvenile, are sealed.

Mychal Bell is the only one to have been tried so far. A state appeals court recently threw out his conviction for aggravated second-degree battery, saying he couldn't be tried as an adult. He remained in jail pending an appeal.

William A. "Bill" White, listed as the Web site's editor and commander of the American National Socialist Workers Party, did not immediately answer an e-mail to his address. Calls to one of the two William Whites listed in Roanoke were not answered; the other said he was not involved with the site.

Blanco said Saturday that harassing families involved in the case "cannot and will not be tolerated."

"Public attacks on private citizens done out of ignorance and hatred is appalling, and anyone who stoops to such unspeakable persecution will be investigated and subject to the full penalty of law," she said in a statement.

Did you hear the good news on "The Jena 6"? The adult conviction and potential 22 year sentence of Mychal Bell has been overturned. This comes less than one week before widespread protests scheduled for this Thursday in Jena, Louisiana. Since this case and the fate of the other five boys are a looooong way from being resolved mass protests will continue as planned.

The development of Jena story is only part of a much larger "Cyber Rights Movement" that has been gaining greater ground in America in 2007. Let's call it "BLOG POWER"! It goes a little something like this: yet another African-American teenager falls victim to Jim Crow-like criminal injustice; the injustice is covered in some local newspaper; national mainstream media completely ignores story; story spreads like wildfire across hundreds of predominantly African-American blogs; national media still ignores it; bloggers still blog; national media keeps ignoring; bloggers keep blogging on irresponsible national media; one national mainstream outlet might pick up story; bloggers keep blogging; other embarrassed national outlets might pick up story; bloggers keep blogging; finally, previously voiceless activists start to receive national media attention; bloggers keep blogging; more well-known activists such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are part of planned widespread national march; bloggers keep blogging; just days prior to the scheduled protest the charges against the young teenager have been reduced or thrown out. While there exist many examples of BLOG POWER, perhaps the greatest two in 2007 involve "The Jena 6" and Shaquanda Cotton. But before we examine what they represent, some context might be necessary. .....

I understand, and sadly, this is one of the things I absolutely don't like about my side. There may be noise about in on websites like C&L, but nothing in MSM, even by the Democratic candidates. Oh, they'll say something in time, once the primaries are closer, believe that.

I know this thing will be politicized when the time comes (it's happening now). I know our side will push that button and say, see look at those white, right wing, Republican bigots who don't care about black people. The whole thing was handled poorly by school officials. It's hard for me to believe that both school officials and/or teachers did not know about the "white tree" way before the incident took place. When you allow hatred to fester without addressing the problem, the very thing that happened, happens.

You're right, but if school officials and teachers had handled this correctly from the beginning maybe there would have been no need for the police, district attorney and judge.

Another opinion: The inaction of the LaSalle Parish School Board on the noose incident represents a clear violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Therefore, a written complaint should be filed with the U.S. Department of Justice.

No one is going to convince me that the "white tree" wasn't well known and condoned. I put this squarely on the shoulders of the school administration.

One of my protege's went to Jena for the demonstrations. It's a deeper, longer story going back to early in the 2006-7 school year.
