New Version Of Pink's Dear Mr. President
By Logan Murphy Friday Sep 21, 2007 2:33pm
We don't usually post music during the day, but I thought this was worth sharing with the class. The song, Dear Mr. President, from Pink's new DVD, Pink - Live From Wembley Arena is an updated version of the one John posted a while back. They're both incredible, but this version combines powerful background video which left me with goosebumps. As our president becomes more isolated in his bubble, this song becomes more relevant. Thanks Pink...

Pink!
Pink: American patriot.
Chimperor: Anti-American despot.
Wow..
That is amazing. Definate goosebump material.
Jack Jett
Pink has done it again! This is so good.
She's probably one of the most underrated signers out there.
And I'm probably one of the most OVERrated SPELLERS...
I meant singers... Duh...
Left you with Goosebumps , but it gave me the Shits.
THIS CRAP IS WHY AMERICANS ARE IN THE MESS THEY ARE.
Ironically, this song was written for his father....
DR @ 6:
Maybe you were thinking of King Chimp. King Chimp is the most underrated signer.....of signing statements and vetos of pro-America legislation that is...
Sweet Jesus I hate the Bushies. I can't stop crying.
THIS CRAP IS WHY AMERICANS ARE IN THE MESS THEY ARE.
So, we're supposed to be listeing to what, Toby Keith?
Think Pink.
That doesn't give me goosebumps; it gives me a knot in my stomach and tears in my eyes.
How does he sleep at night?
k.a.t.r.i.n.a.
Pink is definitly underated. She rocked it on this one
I have a new fantasy: W can't turn on the TV, or pick up the phone, or log on to anything without this coming up and getting in his face. He should be haunted (literally) by it.
this one is up there with joan baez, country joe and the fish, and arlo guthrie...
pink belongs in that group...
very well done...
maybe there is hope...
we need a lot more of this to counter the fascists...
beautiful
Why does Pink hate America?

Damn - Damn - Damn. I caught the essence, but these old ears missed many of the lyrics. I wish that they were printed.
Powerful, Truthful
I would ask JK ... why are we there JK ... Do you still believe the Lies even after they ahve been exposed?
Do you stand by your president in spite of his leading our Nation away fro the real battlefield where the heart of our enemy was/is because the Idiot President bush took us into a private war of his own in Iraq.? It's about oil, it's about Corporate greed,,,, Is that what you stand for JK.?
when are you people going to wake up and realize that Bush DOESN'T CARE? you can point out all the atrocities that he has caused and rub his nose in it....it just DOESN'T MATTER....HE DOESN'T CARE!!
bring your criminals to justice America.....grow a brain and a pair and MAYBE you can save your country. until then, Bush will be spending your money and laughing at you from his retirement villa in Dubai
Let Me Tell You About Hard Work? The next time you hear Bush say this, Come back to the examples she voices to NumbNuts.
Thank you! Definitely brought goose bumps AND tears to my eyes. We HAVE to take our country back!
Dixie Chicks, Pink, Sarah McLachan & Sally Field. These ladies sure know how to bring it home. Perhaps they're right. We need more sensitivity in our gov't's. Perhaps a mother is needed in the White House.
Peter Hollman @ 16:
I totally agree with you. She delivered a fantastic performance. I listened intently to catch all the words. I hope to see more of this type of inspiration coming out against this spineless, corrupt and war-mongering admin!!!! Mobilize the opposition to greater heights!!
protest
is protest
whining is whining
the song is more whining
than protest
but it's okay
heh...
Awesome song about a putrid president. Kudos, Pink
donkey @ 27:
...and donkey is ass. heh heh
razant @ 25:
Right on !! Someone who is smart; has compassion and empathy; a team player/leader; a careful, yet, decisive decision maker, truthful; one who includes, not alienates and divides; respectful and respected; responsible and dependable; and a protector not a destroyer of people and constitutions!!
How?
The President is a thug. He never makes a verbal mistake when he issues a threat.
The other stuff just doesnt matter to him
Here are the lyrics for the person that asked.
Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.
What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?
Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say
No child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.
What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.
How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh
How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You'd never take a walk with me.
Would you?

WOW! What a great song! This nails it. The only other protest song that rivals this is Eminem's Mosh.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOLMVQa0KD8
This generation has struggled at creating a unified anti war voice (compared to the protests of Vietnam). There are a few shining examples that stand out. This is most definitely one of them.
That was good stuff! I have always thought Pink was and underrated singer. Most of the stuff she puts out is kind of screamy but she actually has a very strong voice!
He doesn't care, he sleeps very well at night because to loose sleep means you are bothered by what you are doing . . . he doesn't care and to prove it he's going to veto SCHIP
SCHIP: The GOP Campaign Against Children

anybody want to venture why this song, as powerful as it is, didn't result in media backlash like the one placed on the dixie chicks?
or even springsteen or neal young??? nothing happened to them either?
perhaps it was because the chicks were first to express discontent in a public forum???
is it another exmple of itf its not covered it didn't happen??

thanks for the schooling dave, nice vid, it seems the target was to motivate to get the november vote out...
So what do we have now to motivate as quick , and as effective, as the jenna 6 protest?
its the networking, its the ideas, its the exchange and the consolidation.
we ahve 400 plus days for the bush administration, they are playing the clock out, we have to make sure the new boss aint like the old boss.
Not exactly the "Happy birthday Mr. President" from Marilyn Monroe to JFK.
Of course, the definitive Mr. President was recorded by The Heptones - produced by Lee Perry:

Someone said "shut up and sing" so she sang.
I think Steve Earle built the bandwagon this time. The levels of dedication to "the cause" are masterfully personified in Earle's song. >>> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4bCVoMCeYY
simply pink!
duncanidho @ 37:
Well Pink has said that most stations, dictated to by their cooperate masters CAN'T play this song. . .
She can't even discuss it in radio interviews
so basically it's been blacklisted
"How do you dream when a Mother has no chance to say goodbye"
As a veteran, this one line brought tears.
hr @ 45:
And as a mom, the thought of my son in desperation and with no one there for him.
Pink is gorgeous and real. Thank you thank you Pink.
Awesome song...a great comfort for us, but useless as far as communicating with bush/cheney or any of the neocons. These moving words, images, and performance would have no effect on sociopathic narcissist greedy power/money/warmongers.

clymenstra, thanks for bringing that point up.
so they are responding by saying if its not covered, it didn't happen.
Can the experienced music industry types give us some insight on how the label can infringe on the artists message like this? Is it contractual? is it something else???
cuz it seems songs like this one, that don't get the coverage, airplay, etc, are prone to be duplicated and shipped outside of the corporate record distribution system...
(which would make RIAA very testy..)
Pink rocks. She speaks truth to power and doesn't care what the mouth-breathers think
yup definitely got the goosebumps
now we just need all those wonderful ladies in music brave enough to say what they think to get together and do a power medly :)

This song is #1 here in Europe!
by far the most moving song i've heard in a long time.
i never really got into pink's style, but her lyrics are empowering (stupid girl- my girls LOVE that song). her music is growing on me more and more.
Left you with Goosebumps , but it gave me the Shits.

Here is one of the interesting responses to that Pink video. How is it, have it only been Pink and the Dixie Chicks that have had the courage and good sense to make some serious music about this president?
Clytemnestra @ 44:
You got that right! That's why everybody (except for the surly Garcia) will go out and buy up copies and shoot them into the top 10 despite blacklisting. We'll buy it and stations will be playing it 30 years from now as one of the most important songs of the music era.
Sorry Garcia, I know you can't say anything that doesn't make you look stupid.
Vey nice BUT the bush team have no feelings. They are reptiles are they ARE NOT listening to you or me. Dont sit back and think Pink has taken care of it. She'll sell more records and bush will keep doing what he does until enough of us SAY NO. Thats what it takes.......
It is a powerful song/video. I didn't know PINK had it in her. Bravo!
I wonder how long until christio-right-wing-ocrats are crushing her CDs under their tractors? Lest we forget the Dixie Chicks.
Sorry to any real Christians here, but the USA has made christian a dirty word for me.

a classic
Sometimes we all just need a laugh. Any musicians here will be howling at this. I even think Mr. Clapton would chuckle.

garcia @ 58:
More like this CRAPPY PRESIDENT is why Americans are in the mess they are...
Would be a great opener to a major address at the democratic convention,
and a great ad during the republican convention.
razant @ 25:
...we need a mutha in the White House. Draft Maxine Waters!
Pink has always been a talented singer/ songwriter - but this song just confirms her to be one of the best.
With any justice - she will be nominated for Record and Song of the year at next years Grammys.
And in response to another post - not sure why Pink hasn't received the same backlash that the Dixie Chicks got. Linda Ronstadt was crucified, Sally Field cut off - so why aren't the rednecks baying for Pink's blood???
And YES - he doesn't give a shit so he sleeps very well at nights - and how he can have a holiday every second week proves it.
Shame he is vetoeing the children health insurance bill.
Spending BILLIONS of dollars in Iraq - and can't justify HELPING his own people!!!!
Don't know what the bigger shame is. Himself - or the 29% who still support him!
Shame shame shame
Back in the 60's we had people not only writing great songs and getting off their collective asses and protesting Vietnam in the form of free concerts. Now we have the great songs coming again but the protesting could be so much stronger. I think of Rod McKuen's sing "Soldiers Who Want To Be Heroes number practically zero but there are millions, who want to be civilians and I hope it still applies today.
I sent in a UTUBE copy of Peter, Paul & Mary doing "El Salvador" and that song epitomizes history repeating itself on several fronts.
EX: "And kill the people to set them free
Who put this price on their liberty?
Dont you think its time to leave
El Salvador?"
First music video I ever watched. Didn't know who Pink was, now I'll never forget her. What a great piece of music, well crafted, meaningful lyric, excellent delivery.
It put tears in this guy's eyes for the million we've killed and the thousands we've lost and a congress who should be reflecting our views and desires who are hated by 9 out of 10 of us.
I pinch myself to see if I'm dreaming and it only hurts me.
I like this song..it's very emotional..Pink has always been somewhat controversial..but with this she hit the mark. This song kinda reminds me of James McMurty's song...We can't make it here anymore.......... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTW0y6kazWM
I believe the reason this song didn't get the backlash rage is simply because of the audience. The folks that listen to P!nk are far less likely to be Bush supporters than those of the Dixie Chicks.
Same with Green Day, Eminem...
A hat should be tipped to Jimmy Kimmel too - he's the only host with balls enough to have let her perform this song on his show.
Well, I guess I'm the only one here to say it, so here goes: I find this song cringe worthy rather than goose bump inducing. Now dont get me completely wrong: I give Pink credit for striving to move beyond the vacuous nonsense currently finding traction on the commercial airwaves. Really, I do. Honestly. I think it's a great thing that she (occasionally) steps out of her creative comfort zone to write songs that-at the very least-poke and prods her young listeners to take notice of the frightening world unfolding around them these days. So before anyone cries foul, just let it be known: I think she's moving in the right direction. Good for her. That being said, she's a long way from creating nuanced, truly heartwrenching material, the kind from the likes of the (I'll just name a couple off the top of my head) Steve Earle's, Dan Bern's, Patty Griffin's, and Josh Ritter's of the world. I just find this song, in terms of the writing, kind of collapses under the weight of it's own blunt earnestness: all headlines and no story; a microwave dinner rather than a thre course meal. Again, I'm just giving my two cents on the song and writing itself. Again, good for her- and good for everyone in fact-if she turns and few heads and opens a few eyes to the nightmare that is Bush. I'm just not crazy about the song. Just my opinion.
hey crazylove- i thought garcia was responding to JK @ #7, saying JK must be a member of the blackwater ss.
All I am thinking is what are we going to do? WTF are we going to do? It is all sinking so fast. We have to meet aggression with aggression. A revolution.
Hi Steve,
Welcome to the no-fly list.
I've been asking the same question now for years. WHEN will America stand up? Maybe when Iraq kicks Blackwater out and the whole war goes for horrendous to horrific and they go for a draft?
Will that be enough?
Blue Buddha @ 18:
These are words of a patriot, a patriot who loves America.
We could do with about 250 million more people like her.
Ohh I forgot, asking questions will get you tazered.
- JJ
Blue Buddha @ 18:
If you're going to make a joke, at least get it right -
Why does Pink hate America so much?
Powerful. Brought tears to my eyes. What a brilliant piece of work.
Fair Witness @ 76:
Yes, that would be enough. Once we get past the culture of self-absorption and apathy (which is EXACTLY what the war-mongers wanted - everybody go shopping!), then things will change.
Not a moment sooner, I'd say. Most of the people I work with are totally oblivious... War? oh, yeah, very unfortunate.
Except for those who have someone there. It is real to them. The draft would spread that feeling around quite nicely.
Pink's music is not the music of my generation, but after listening to "Dear Mr. President", I was deeply touched...
This Machine Kills Fascists @ 81:
I think with the latest in Blackwater attention, the draft becomes all the more possible. If the Iraqis give Blackwater the boot, the entire war collapses (scary to think that things *could* be worse, isn't it?) and our troops are stuck in the middle. Look for the draft - its coming.
Gawd only knows the Dems don't have the huevos to push bringing troops home. It's just crazy. Sickening.
Beautiful and touching! This should be playing on radio stations all over this country.
Yeah, like that would ever happen. I am passing this along to all my friends that I know will appreciate it. I have never bought a Pink CD, but I will now.
[...] [H/t to Crooks & Liars.] [...]
This Machine Kills Fascists @ 81:
oops- didn't mean to put my post iin quoted text... :/
There's another song on the CD that she recorded with her father, a Viet Nam vet called "I have seen the rain".
Also worth listening to:

I do love it when people say we are "whining" when we are making our voices heard...
Never satisfied till we climb the clock tower and start taking aim huh??
Is that what you want to see??
Thanks for posting this, John.
duncanidho @ 37:
Because Pink does not have a "country & western" audience.
Great song.
pinhead @ 86:
Well, I sure hope you're right. Thing is, I'm in the Silicon Valley, and I work with some very well-educated folks, and I remember asking 5 people how they felt about the damage to Habeas Corpus when the magnificent MCA passed, and only one knew what I was talking about. This area is not as liberal as Bill O'Really thinks it is, but it's not red either. So it surprises me that people are still so detached. I really hope you are right. Of course, those of us who are vocal are quite vocal, so I hope it sinks in that it's ok to speak their minds, and that it doesn't make one a terrorist, no matter what President Malaprop says...
My friend was Airborne, and jumped into northern Iraq at the beginning of the "Liberation". Then he was sent to Afghanistan, then back to Iraq. He's out now, but the thoughts he had originally had of an Army career, well, he now shares your friend's current outlook. I imagine your buddy finds it difficult not to use some of that training when the "patriots" tell him he doesn't know what he's talking about. Good grief, that's gotta be aggravating.
As for Pink's song on the radio, that would be nice, but Clear Channel ain't gonna allow it.
We've got a lot of work to do to set this place right. I'll just continue trying to draw people into the conversation, and try to break this silence.
What's so important about Pink? She has about as much brains as G Dub has.
Fair Witness @ 88:
Nice, I like that one also. Time to send out these YouTube URLs to some mailing lists...
Thanks for posting that, hadn't heard it.
Clytemnestra @ 44:

Disturbed- Deify
lyrics:
Thats what i believe got him relected is the people knew that you could beleve what he said."/"Well that's a request to do that."/"Our country is strong-"how many people to march i don't no." - we go forward to defend freedom-"Take the governments side."-and all that is good and just in our world."
All my devotion betrayed
I am no longer afraid
I was too blinded to see
How much you've stolen from me
You wanna' know why I feel so horrified?
I let my innocence die
You wanna' know why I can't be pacified?
You made me bury something
I won't be sleeping tonight
I only wanted the blessing made
Now I've been labeled a renegade
It seems so clear now what I must do
You're no immortal
I won't let them
Deify you
They view you as the new messiah
Deify you
Renew belief in some demented man
You wanna' know why it seems the passion's died?
We've all been living this lie
You wanna' know why my will's been fortified?
You've made me hunger again
Good luck sleeping tonight
I only wanted the blessing made
Now I've been labeled a renegade
It seems so clear now what I must do
You're no immortal
I won't let them
Deify you
They view you as the new messiah
Deify you
Renew belief in some demented man
All my devotion betrayed
I am no longer afraid
All my devotion betrayed
I am no longer afraid
I was too blinded to see
How much you've stolen from me
I was too blinded to see
All my devotion betrayed
I am no longer afraid
I was too blinded to see
How much you've stolen from me
Deify you
They view you as the new messiah
Deify you
Renew belief in some demented man
Deify you
(All my devotion betrayed)
They view you as the new messiah
(I am no longer afraid)
Deify you
(I was too blinded to see)
Renew belief in some demented man...
(How much you've stolen from me...)
Jacob @ 96:
and what have you done? who cares if she's talented or not. it's the message that counts. i'm guessing you live in los angeles or dream about it. get off your ass and do something. you wouldn't be critical unless you felt guilty for being so lazy.
[deleted - check your attitude.]
This performance by Pink brings to the surface the anger, frustration, fear, hurt, pain and knowledge that I felt watching the bombing of Baghdad on March 20th 2003. I remember thinking then that this would not turn out well and it would affect my lfe and future generations for a very long time to come. That was four years ago and I suspect these wounds on humanity will fester for decades.
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
For me personally it was a moment of decision; to abandon my then current lifestyle and seek a method in which to change hearts and minds towards reason to solve challenges as opposed to force and violence. My 'strategery': I quit a cushy job, chucked most of my possessions and went back to school. Two years from now I finish up at UVA and then off to graduate school. At some point there will be a captive audience of young minds to mold and shape towards peaceful resolutions.
"Instead of that liberty which takes root and growth in the progress of reason, if recovered by mere force or accident, it becomes with an unprepared people a tyranny still of the many, the few, or the one." --Thomas Jefferson to Lafayette, 1815.
Great song, but try to keep your clothes on for future albums.
I have had everyone I know listen to this and encouraged their buying this CD to support her. Pink is amazingly talented and courageous! Being a person who takes 50 words to say what should take about 10, I'm in awe how she so succinctly and beautifully covered SO MANY of the hundreds of criminal issues this man is responsible for. Thanks, Pink! Everyone--Buy her CD!!!
I'm sorry! something about this song just makes me cringe. It gets a lot of airplay in Australia though. I'm surprised Pink didn't get the same treatment as the Dixie Chicks. Goes to show how much the coordinated effort of the freepers had to do with that movement.
Bush's blood money and war profits buy him plenty of sleeping pills,
to help him drift off at night. And plenty of other drugs to keep
him propped up every time he goes on TV to "read" his propaganda.
The goosebump moment for me in this is the line
"You've come a long way -- from whiskey and cocaine!"
He is only consistent at two things:
Failures and crimes
duncanidho @ 37:
The Dixie Chicks debacle occurred because they are/were a country band and country stations are a bit neo-nazi ...
i love this song apart from the assumption that his 'witches of eastwick' mother (in the video not in the song) and his 'stepford' wife are any different !!!
They are as stupid, ignorant and complicit as he is!!
And if you don't know about his mother she thought that for some of the 'katrina' victims .....
".. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them"
what an ignorant bitch !!!!
