From "Eyes Wide Open," a project of The American Friends Service Committee. Boots are lined up representing US soldiers killed in the Iraq war, shoes representing Iraqi civilians. A friend of mine saw this exhibit in Washington, DC and said it was as moving to her as the Vietnam Memorial. From the exhibition website:
Due to the growing number of US casualties, the Eyes Wide Open National Exhibit has become too large for the AFSC to tour. Instead, the AFSC will be splitting the exhibit into 50 state exhibits to continue the work of bringing Eyes Wide Open into smaller communities across the country. Working with AFSC offices, Quaker meetings and peace groups across the country, the Eyes Wide Open state exhibits feature the boots of the soldiers from their home states in addition to a memorial to the Iraqi civilian casualties.

Minn. Prosecutor Argues Sen. Craig Understood Plea
By Paul Kane

Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) should not be allowed to withdraw his guilty plea to charges of disorderly conduct because he fully understood the legal process leading up to the deal, the Minnesota prosecutor who handled the case contended in legal documents filed today.
In a 41-page motion that seeks to preserve Craig's guilty plea to misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges, prosecutor Christopher P. Renz charged that Craig was upset with the political results of his plea but has no legal grounds to overturn it.
Emboldened Taliban Reflected In More Attacks, Greater Reach
U.S., Afghan Officials Disagree With Analysts' Notion of a Major Resurgence
By John Ward Anderson
Washington Post Foreign Service

KABUL -- Preying on a weak government and rising public concerns about security, the Taliban is enjoying a military resurgence in Afghanistan and is now staging attacks just outside the capital, according to Western diplomats, private security analysts and aid workers.
Of particular concern, private security and intelligence analysts said, is the new reach of the Taliban to the provinces ringing Kabul, headquarters for thousands of international security troops. Those troops are seeking to shore up the government of President Hamid Karzai, help stabilize the country, find Osama bin Laden and rebuild a nation deeply scarred by almost three decades of warfare. So far, they have had only mixed success.
"The Taliban ability to sustain fighting cells north and south of Kabul is an ominous development and a significant lapse in security," said a recent analysis by NightWatch, an intelligence review written by John McCreary, a former top analyst at the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency.

I might be late getting here tonight but now I am pissed.
Also saw that Hillary's campaign chairman or whatever, owns the polling company that feeds polling data to ABC and Good Morning America. Of course they won't let Dennis in, he'll kick their ass!
I saw Dennis And Elizabeth the other night in Ventura and they were awesome!
Talked with both of them, got autographs and cut them a check.
I am so in the political process now! I will never have to apologize to the future...Peace.

Violent Crime Reported Up 2% in 2006
WASHINGTON, Sept. 24 (AP) — Violent crime rose nearly 2 percent last year, slightly more than expected, the F.B.I. reported on Monday.
The number of big-city murders also increased, by 1.8 percent, the same rate as homicides nationwide. Robberies and arson also increased in large population centers, and rapes and car thefts dropped, Federal Bureau of Investigation figures show.
The numbers confirm that the crime rate increased for the second year in a row. It had declined a bit from 2002 to 2004.
A spokesman for the Justice Department, Brian Roehrkasse, said the report was good news, adding that the rate of crimes per 100,000 people had declined to its lowest level in 30 years.
Over all, violent crime rose 1.9 percent last year, slightly higher than the 1.3 percent increase reflected in preliminary data this summer.
Where were you, George?

I'll tell you one test for Iraq withdrawal no one has mentioned.
Even if George is promising to draw down troops in a year, none will come home if the rate of casualties stays at 100 per month. That'll be proof the Iraqi's aren't ready to take over, and if we left still sustaining that many casualties, the repubs can only define any withdrawal of troops as a cut and run.
We will never leave. Iraq is one giant military base for Israel and their interests.
After the MoveOn ad ran in the New York Times, there was a maelstrom of criticism because it was alleged that they improperly received a discounted rate. So MoveOn paid the $77,000 difference between the discounted rate and the standard rate.
But Rudy Giuliani, having been one of the noisiest of those complaining, got the same rate for an ad of his own. Will he now pay the difference?
Let's Make Rudy Pay!

Wall Streets Gaping Jaws are ready
After watching this clip i am reminded that there are things that those of us who oppose this war can do to bring the message of the suffering and loss it creates to those patriotic Americans who are out supporting the war by shopping until they drop.
It has been said here many times that protesting does not do anything. It has also been said that too few people show up to change anything. The media chooses to cover it as it sees fit and besides a few speeches and possibly some arrests and certainly some chants the day after it is forgotten.
But something with this impact is different. I have worked with AFSC before and they are good people. They are ordinary people like you and me doing extrordinary things because they work together as a community.
If you have the ability and inclination to join a group like the AFSC you can help bring this war to an end. If you have friends close to you who oppose the war and you form a group to make the war more real to those around you you can help bring this war to an end. The first step is to make the abstract real.

BillO' already has access to thousands of people through his TV show and when he's on the Colbert report he's on the same medium, television, that is. However, when Colbert brings Friedman, who is a writer, onto his show and gives him the publicity and the 'reach' that TV has to offer, it's quiet different. It's as if Colbert is giving him a stage that he would normally not have. Perhaps I'm overly critical, but that's how I see it.

A young Christian woman
Was given a new pair of shoes.
They were made of cowhide
And needn’t tying or polishing.
She wore them for days on end,
Obediently walking in tow
For what seemed an eternity,
Until she was standing at the
Beautiful brown feet of Allah.
“You must give the shoes back now.”
“To whom?” she asked.
God then motioned downward
Toward a group of young patriots
Weeping plaintively.
“There. They need them now, Jill,
So they might go home.”
She then removed the new shoes
And dropped them from the sky
…like a bomb.

Please send this link to everyone: VIDEO: Mainstream Media is Selling Another War
Now they are selling a war on Iran. Mainstream media is helping sell another illegal war. T The way they do this is mainly by not reporting things or under-reporting things. So important facts don't reach the majority of the American people.
Most people are are relying on the mainstream media to learn what is going on in the world. Most people rely on TV news and TV news is not telling them what they need to know. Most people don't hunt around the internet for vital information, most people aren't learning about Dr. ElBaradi's recent statements. Dr. ElBaradei is the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency and he recently said "we have not seen any undeclared facilities operating in Iran". Did you know Iran is permitted under the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty to have facilities for civilian nuclear power? it's their right. Here is something else the most people are not hearing from the mainstream media: The U.S. is in violation of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. http://representativepress.googlepages.com/

Hillary kills unflattering news story
When the Hillary camp heard over the Summer about a GQ piece in the works that would have put their campaign organization in a bad light — talking about infighting among staffers — they decided to get the piece killed before it would see publication.
How did they do it? According to Ben Smith, they threatened to cut off the magazine's future access to Bill Clinton. And it worked — the piece was spiked.
[...] really should take a look at this exhibition honoring those who have lost their lives in Iraq. It is certainly quite powerful, even [...]
I just wish that the troops would stop going. Just refuse. If Congress will not cut funding, just refuse to deploy. I think that the 'it's not the troops place to decide where they fight' is thrown out the window once a nation wages an illegal war. They do have the right to refuse illegal orders. I try, I really try to have sympathy for those troops who continue to die. I say this as someone who sees the 'troops' on a daily basis being a military wife, but at some point you get tired of the endless conveyor belt of people going in and getting sent home in a casket or with missing limbs. Why go back for a second, third, fourth time? At some point, you must stop the insanity yourself. For most, it is "just a job", but it isn't. It is taking life and possibly losing your life for lies.
When my husband comes home and tells me about another one sent over there, I have just gotten to the point of rolling my eyes. Most say that they don't want to go, but they do it anyway. A few years ago, I would have agreed that they should wait for Congress to end the war. I told myself to hold out until 2006, things must get better, right? But, I think we can now be honest with ourselves and say that this is just not going to happen anytime soon. And if Congress will not act, then they should just say, "Sir, No Sir!"
Navy SWan, right on. I agree with you completely. Great post.
How fucked are we as a country that it takes such things to wake people up to the reality that is going on right now. If people can't get involved and start caring about their country without such drama, there isn't much hope for this country.

This question is directed to all presiding representative in the 110th Congress running for the Democratic Presidential nomination. Please evaluate the current performance of this 110th Congress since the Democrats gain majority control. Also, before you speak to my question reflect on the facts that the Congress's has a 13% approval rating, and why military families still do not know when their sons and daughters will be returning home as promised in the run up to the last election.

Bush is going to attack Myramar (Burma) instead of Iran at the UN according to sources. I kid you not: http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN2431337720070925
What is this? The Iranian President's balls are too big so we are going to go after the government of Burma -- which has been crapping on its people for 20 years without interference from the USA. I can imagine their people looking at Iraq and saying to us -- "Please, no, it is OK, we are quite happy as we are under a repressive dictatorship. Just leave us alone, please!"
At least we are finally getting down to a country that really is pretty awful. So now we are going to add to its people's misery by putting sanctions in place that will hurt the common people and do nothing at all to the bigwigs who have the capacity to avoid them.
You wonder if Condi is putting up Burma as a target just to distract the kid. "No, no, that one is too dangerous -- play with this one instead!"
I have said that I'm gonna vote for Dennis Kucinich (and I do believe that that's what I'll be doing.) But another real voice that's been left out of the debate is who is it, Chris Dodd? I would have no problem whatsoever voting for him if he ended up being the Dem nominee.

This is so messed up. This article is talking about how our governement is outsourcing the war on drugs to Blackwater. they said 80% of Blackwater's efforts will be oversees.
That means 20% of Blackwater's efforts will be here in this country. Blackwater will use all the tools created by the Bush administration, warrantless searches and seizures of businesses, no rights for those accused.
Why? Because the government iis once agin making the declaration that the drug trade is funding terrorism.

President Clinton welcomed Pat Robertson to the whitehouse to kick off her national campaign on the war on pornography. “Adult pornography is the gateway drug to child pornography.” She and Pat said as they spoke in unison. Blackwater security forces deploy across the nation tomorrow to round up all persons who have used or possess any kind of pornography, ever. “We’re hoping it is as successful as the great drug round up of 2008.” The great drug round up of 2008 hyper-criminalized all illicit drug use. Blackwater, in co-operation with local law enforcement officials, arrested nearly 30 million Americans, indefinitely, successfully cutting off all funding to the terrorists.

Gee, Dubya...Take A Bold Stance, Why Dontcha?

Actually, the politicians are lobbyists. Look at what multinational corporations many of the politicians are on their board members. That's right... everyone in the government is a sub-contractor. The only people left in the government who aren't in the pocket of some business are the middle management types who've been around 30-40 years and refuse to retire.

I have not read one comment about the loss of life in Iraq - American or Iraqi. Did anybody see the empty boots & shoes? Well boys and girls, I cried. I cried because young men and women will not be coming home. I cried because the mothers that lost a child will never be able to feel whole again. I cried because those individuals that gave their lives will soon be forgotten. I cried because they died leaving children fatherless/motherless. I cried because they will never experience the happiness of a wedding, or the birth of that first grandchild.
I cried because there were empty childrens shoes - lives cut short because some s.o.b. wants "just a little more" money.
Darth Vader and Chimpy should be held accountable for all of the waste and destruction. Hang them up by the balls!!!
I am pissed.
About 500 Americans die in Iraq every 6 months, so every time George Bush asks for another 6 months he's also asking for the expenditure of another 500 lives. Does he really believe that those additional 500 Americans must die so those previous 3800 Americans didn't die in vain? When are people gonna see through that argument?
Apparently George Bush is advising Hillary Clinton "quietly behind the scenes"

The NYT is carrying Stephen M. Walt and John J. Mearsheimer's amazing expose of the insane influence that the Israel lobby has on our country.

Did you even watch the segment? He nailed Friedman on his FU's at the end. Friedman cowered like a chastised puppy about his 6 months, and Colbert looked pissed at him at the end.
Right or Left, Colbert pounds on hypocrisy, and there's plenty of it to go around. The more idiots on the right he gets on his show, the more exposed they are for what they are.
GREAT JOB COLBERT!

Paul in LA @ 75:
In California, Contra Costa County to be precise. I just called the County Elections Clerk and they said that they just mailed these out, trying to be helpful (nice waste of money). When I asked why we got one addressed to a person who doesn't live here, they said they had errors in the file they used to generate this mailing so some names went to the wrong address. Why they can't wait and do this stupidity after 2008 is beyond me.
