Democratic Presidential Debate Open Thread
graphic from pjvoice
For those without cable, MSNBC will be streaming the debates live on their site.
And as always, the Dodd campaign is putting up the Talk Clock. Let's see whose messages are really getting out there.

Frist....Love the Dennis, but I'm backing Edwards
Dennis Kucinich in 2008!!!
Love the Edwards--he's my neighbor, but I've voting for Kucinich.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article...
Wonder if they'll debate surveilance. Scary link about continuous tracking data collection for all GPS systems.
Nice graphic, even blogs cut out Gravel!
I'm glad Kucinich is there, but what about Gravel?
Too bad {Wanna know what's too bad? People like you-Sitemonitor]
I would love to see Kucinich do it.
I'm so uninterested in Clinton. It's depressing thinking that the Bush/Clinton dynasties could continue for another 4 years. republican-lite, We really need to move on (pun not intended) and get new blood in government.
edwards trying to highlight differences on Iraq that aren't really there
Evening people
Lollimom @ 8:
Clinton was by no means perfect but don't you think the country was better served with him in the White House than chimpy?
kucinich got a prime spot this time
Kooch is the only one that can truly bring about change. all the others are just more of the same, only in different measure.
richardson doesnt sound very coherent
Richardson's right.
I love the talk clock that the Dodd Campaign puts up. He does the journalism no one else did.
Dodd and Richardson's plan could work.
Curtilingus @ 5:
They're already tracking you with your IP address.
"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength."
- George Orwell, 1984
How many effin debates have there been already?
Nothing's going to change my mind, short of a divine or alien intervention.
Dodd makes it sound so much better...
Yeah, yeah, everyone loves Kucinich. Can we get back to reality now?
If I had Instant Runoff Voting where I could rank the candidates, like some countries do, my preferences would be as follows.
1) Barack Obama
2) Dennis Kucinich
3) John Edwards
4) Hillary Clinton
I will vote Democratic in the General Election, but if I voted in the Republican primary I'd only have one choice:
1) Ron Paul
FUCK THESE ASSHOLES. If you back any of these cretins, you are IN FAVOR OF THE WAR. They all want to STAY!
I'm voting for Joe Walsh.
Kucinich just does not seem to get it. His view of the world is way to pollyanna for reality. Sadly, most of his ideas are pretty good but on the Iraq issue he is simply being naive.
Orangutan. @ 22:
What's wrong with Dodd? I'd vote for him before Hillary. He's one guy I can see being more Progressive as President than he is as Senator(not counting Edwards of course).
clinton between kucinich and gravel!
Richards/Kuchinich '08.
Edwards is unbeatable by the GOP. I really really hate to say this, but though Dennis may have the dead on correct answers on oh, pretty much everything, and no shortage of brass testicles, he doesn't "look presidential" (like the quarterback who stayed in shape at 50).........and while I hate that this is the case, we have vast legions of vacuous American Idol loving morons who don't have a clue about the issues who "vote for the person" (in other words, make superficial determinations like "I'd like to have a beer with him") and off their "gut feelings".
V V
GonzoD @ 21:
I've been voting since 1972, and I am NOT voting for Hillary Clinton or any other warmonger.
That's my reality.
The permanent US Embassy in Iraq will be bigger than Vatican City and cost over a billion dollars. A large contingent of US troops will be necessary to protect the complex and our oil interest in Iraq. Any politician who promises to leave Iraq now or any time in the foreseeable future is a lying sack of crap.
Instead of doubling Guantanamo they are bidding on how many troops they will withdraw upon inauguration (heh). I can name that tune in three troops.
Kusinich/Gravel '08 The two ugliest and best candidates we have.
I have to give Gravel credit. He's one tough old man. Give em' hell Mike.
I love Gravel... He makes sense. He knows what he's talking about, and isn't affraid of telling Clinton/Obama where to shove it.
Did someone actually tell Hill that witchy laugh is actually effective? Yeah for Gravel for calling her on her vote today!
I can't take any more questions...Bible and now baseball...shit why not apple pie reciepes...I wish I was a drinking woman....
Biden wins on the religion question!
Red Sox or Yankees?
We are fucked.
GonzoD @ 324:
Think about it this way. We have a repug party that does not believe in government. I think a Democrat will win in '08 but eventually the repugs will get back in power. I know repugs will cut costs and cut regulations on everything they can get their government hating hands on. Do you expect them to really follow through on viable safety procedures?
I didn't think the questions could get any worse but now they are talking about baseball.
*sigh*
mudshark @ 356:
Actually, the technology of batteries has become more advanced and therefore, some batteries can last between 24-48 hours.
Right along Interstate 40 all across the midwest.
Kucinich wins again!
Now we're on to the really important stuff! Don't ever let Russert do another one of these!
nativeokie @ 350:
So lawyers who represent injured people against corporations and insurance companies are "ambulance chasers?" Which of his clients' cases were bogus? How much of his own time and money did he invest in his clients' cases? Any specifics that show he was an "ambulance chaser"?
Just because the corporations say it millions of times doesn't make it true. Unless, of course, you'd like to take another sip... this batch tastes like cherry. Mmmmm, cherry.
All in all, I'd rather see them make the "debates" a Jeopardy tournament than to get questions about their favorite bible passage and baseball teams...
xoites defends Constitution @ 368:
Not going to work. There are many people who will be against this for scenic reasons. I know it sounds ridiculous, but that is one of the reasons people are against wind turbines in my home state.
Kucinich is the only candidate rational enough and courageous enough to be President.
Frybread @ 345:
...I noticed you say that you are not a neocon....hmmmmmmmm?.....maybe....just a little?
Buchanon right away says Hillary. They want Hillary.
nonbeliever @ 365:
Sorry I forgot. Ever since Reagan, Repugs have believed that government doesn't work..my bad!
Next up on MTP: Our partisan members (all neocons) will give us their thoughts on who they felt took the debate.
Frybread @ 373:
I was just there. There is nothing to see.
Except windmills.
Chris @ 367:
I've seen the new batteries....I'm going to get 3.....that would service my house perfectly.....don't really need alot.......We don't use much.
xoites defends Constitution @ 379:
That may be, I've never been on I-40. But some states see tourism as an income source and will argue against 5 million wind turbines lining the Interstate highway system.
nativeokie @ 350:
This man took on Corporations and won millions for his clients..
And that makes him bad how?
xoites,
Sometimes timing is everything. Love the break between 379 and 380. :D
There was a nuke plant about 20 miles away from where I grew up. Voters shut down all nuclear power in California way back in '89, but this particular plant had been economically unviable and for years anyway, off-line for extended periods of time due to maintainance and other problems particular to the industry.
The fact is that even if you could guarantee no more Chernobyls or Three Mile Islands, the real costs of nuclear power make it too expensive to build and too dirty to run in an economical way, Basically the long range issues of safety and disposal make it extremely unrealistic.
Solar, wind, hydrogen, etc. all have much more viable and realistic futures than nuclear.
Frybread @ 339:
I hate how they talk about the debate afterwards like it was some kind of sports game and they can definitely call who won or lost for everyone.
lewisnclark @ 335:
I think it was excellent.
mudshark @ 381:
Muddy. Watch Who Killed the Electric Car? Pay attention to the segment about batteries. And who bought the patent rights. Then buried them. Anyhoo off to watch the WAR. Night all, thanks for the play by play.
I am not kiding when i say this. The only thing i saw on interstate 40 in Western Oklahoma and all the way across the top of Texas was unused flat useless land, windmills and people driving as fast as they could to get through it before they died of boredom.
Tweety is so anti clinton it is embarrassing.
He has crossed a line from reporter to attack dog.
Someone needs to shut him up. I love that Biden is not biting. Mathews should not be acting like this with any candidate.
Frybread @ 382:
So we'll keep our dependence on oil and warfare so we can have better scenery on the interstate. *faints*
Priorities people priorities.
lewisnclark @ 385:
you forgot the nuke plant at San Onofre, and Diablo.....I know theres more here in Calif I just can't remember them.
lewisnclark @ 385:
Great points!! Nuclear is not the way to go.
do not let hillary become the next president.
please.
fromnorthoftheborder @ 394:
I hear ya
Strawberry @ 388:
Thanks Strawberry...I'll do that.
cristalyn @ 391:
I'm not implying that. I just think totally relying on wind power, by building millions and millions of wind turnbines, is not the answer.
Vitam Vas @ 28:
I think you're right. Edwards has the best shot in the general election. But I'm voting for whoever the Democratic nominee is.
So, why is MSNBC'S feed unavailable?
hobomojo @ 37:
Shouldn't be, that's where I'm watching it.
hope @ 35:
That was just her way of eating up 10 of her 30 seconds to respond. Then she ate up 10 more saying she did not know where to start and by then it was time to demure to respond.
It's official. I hate Hillary Clinton.
Tim Russert for President!
nonbeliever @ 36:
Yea, understood......my least favorite is Hillary, but she's a fuckload better than anything the republicans trot out. We at least know she is civic minded. Probably won't upset any applecarts, but............One plus is that I believe she probably has a grudge against talk radio, and may be prone to take some action there.
V V
hobomojo @ 37:
My sympathies. My cable used to go out when it rained, at least the teevee, and election night November 06 was a frog strangler storm. MSNBC on the tubes saved me from going crazy.
hill is not doing weel
Hahahahahah hehehehhehe
GOd help me, I wish I had the skillset necessary to emigrate away form the US. FAR away from the US. I would cheerfully emigrate to NZ or Australia to get away from this shit. I'd go to Brazil, fer chrissake!
Oh snap! Obama basically just said, "These idiots on stage approved the Iraq war, do you trust them to figure out what we should do about Iran?"
And now I hate Obama too. There's only two people up there that know how to answer a question honestly.
If you want to see an ugly interstate try 95 just south of Philidelphia. Row upon row of electric billboards light up the sky!
mudshark @ 392:
Which was the one that used to dump the waste (in barrels) into the Pacific Ocean?
xoites defends Constitution @ 379:
Don't like windmills? Then feel free to suck up all that mercury and other toxins that coal fired power plants emit. You can't eat the fish in some places because they are so laced with poison.
Wind power don't emit toxic poisons.
fromnorthoftheborder @ 394:
agreed. especially if she wins the Democratic nomination. We'll be better off under Giuli-Romney.
Marco @ 400:
I don't think any of the Democratic candidates, including Hillary, is worse than Rudy or Romney.
nativeokie @ 390:
I get really tired of Tweety and his fellow potatohead Russert. He's ok sometimes and other days, he's just a disgrace. And his anti-Clinton bias is so visible it's embarassing.
Frybread @ 397:
your partially right...it is not the SOLE answer...
Who said anything about totally relying on wind power? I think the point is we need to diversify. Safely.
Tim Russert's last question, asking the candidates about their favortie Bible verse, crossed the line. So i sent him an email:
Mr. Russert,
I'm writing you about the debate you recently hosted in Dartmouth, New Hampshire.
You asked a question, which i felt was inappropriate. The United States Constitution states that " no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."
So, i think your question asking the candidates about their favorite Bible verse crossed the line sir. I really think that the faith and religion of these candidates has absolutely no business being discussed in this way. You presented them with a religious test and I think you need to apologize for that.
nativeokie @ 390:
I couldn't agree more.Tweety(and Fineman)just wallowed in the most disgustingly gratuitous anti-Clintonian hate fest I've ever seen.Tweety makes me sick, and I just wish he'd fuck off.
Hillary's arrogance and level of condescension was astounding. Her fakey phoney laugh (meant to dismiss others) was enough to make me turn the TV off. The MSM, for whatever reason, is pushing to convince the American people that she has this nomination in the bag. If they fall for it then they deserve what they get. I hate what this process has become..
Timmeh is really bustin' Hillary's balls, isn't he?
GonzoD @ 399:
I don't know...there both on the coast.....give me a minute..
So instead of asking these candidates about their own ideas (something I want to hear) every question is about Hillary. I hope she comes on and just tells him to F-off and walks away. I bet she would score more votes that way. Although I support her I don't agree with her 100%. If I did it would scare me a bit.
But this crap from Mathews is complete BS. Get some good info out these candidates so Americans can make the best choice and vote how they want, no matter who it is for.
freaktown @ 405:
Nice!
xoites defends Constitution @ 404:
And I think we could do that "safely" with nuclear energy in the portfolio, along with wind and solar power.
Marco @ 400:
Marco,
I think your sarcasm button is broken. AFLAC!
A better question might have been, "Which Athiest in History do you admire the most?"
Frybread @ 412:
Maybe, maybe not. Could we do it economically?
BTW,I found Russerts interviewer "attack skills" finely honed and amazingly aggressive for a guy known as such a total pussy when it comes to follow questions for republicans.
Him and Tweety are gloating over the fact that the top three Dem front runners won't commit to getting out of Iraq before 2013..Russert looks like the cat that ate the canary.
Tweety and his little fat buddy seem to be missing something.
You can end our huge military presence in Iraq by bringing in the UN and others. Since we are part of the UN we would still have troops in Iraq. So saying everyone leaves is really a lie. I mean we can't leave without an international solution in place.
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2003/01/24/MN63860.DTL Russian Navy http://www.planetark.org/dailynewsstory.cfm?newsid=7282 France and The UK....nuke waste dumping......haven't found anything relating to Calif
One thing about the Timmy Russerts and Chris Matthews's of the world... they are entralled by (and suck-ups to) power, and if Hillary were elected POTUS they'd be the first ones in line to make nice and kiss her ass.
xoites defends Constitution @ 415:
Not sure. What does the hazardous storage fee total up to after tens of thousands of years? I've got a standard Public Storage locker in Chicago that runs $95 a month.
freaktown @ 405:
Amen! (pardon the pun)
Frybread @ 412:
I disagree slightly. We can eliminate nuclear energy from the portfolio. We haven't even solved how to dispose of it cleanly with the plants we do have. Why compound the problem?
How come Keith Olbermann was not part of this debate process? just curious..
fiver @ 419:
Holy crap! What a deal! And so safe!
it only takes one mistake ..be it natural or man made...and then it's to late..and we still have to figure out how to deal with the waste...I think it would be prudent to find out how to dispose of the waste first...before we commit to building plants.
Why aren't these two dimwits on MSNBC talking about Gravel's idea for Wind Power. It was the first viable energy solution in a debate. You know, cheap, available and even creates jobs during it's creation.
Why aren't they talking about anyone but Hillary? I obviously support her but still I think most of the others will be in in positions of power whether they win this election or not. As the leaders of this nation they all have ideas worthy of discussion.
Mike Gravel - Young men and women
but then again.....There's all that sunshine.....for free.
Didn't Kucinich and Gravel say they would bring the troops home right away also?
"Although I support her I don’t agree with her 100%. If I did it would scare me a bit."
To be honest I would never vote for Hillary even if I could.
(I'm Canadian and a democratic socialist)
My beef is with these useless pricks like Russert and Matthews who pander to Bush and gloat over drawing Dem blood like a pack of goddamn wolves.
Russert looks like blood soaked ferret thats just ripped a rabbit to pieces.
nativeokie @ 428:
I think Kucinich said three months.
Hillary won't even answer questions. We also know why we can't get out of Iraq. They all want to stay.
obama is not doing well. he sounds scared
I hope Kucinich wins again in the post debate polls. It is good for our country to get his ideas out front in my opinion. Same with Ron Paul on the Republican side. I'll still probably vote for Obama in the primary though.
timid
Vitam Vas @ 28:
I agree with both statements. My mother is a good example of the latter. I would say it's more like "vote the name". A name you've heard many times is likely to register when you're in the voting booth. Especially if you are not political like we are.
hadenuf @ 3:
If you've got enough money to live nextdoor to John Edwards, then you have enough money to single-handedly get Kucinich elected. Get busy.
Hillary sounds most presidential to me. Obama just seems to be talking in circles on Iran. Hillary was pretty clear and still tough. Iran could easily be dealt with through diplomacy but you cannot deny the religious leaders of that country are as bad as the taliban and someday we might have to do something.
Hillary gets it, Obama has missed it and Edwards wants to feed them carrots or something.
hill should be ashamed of hersewlf for her vote today!!
And now Edwards is on my hate list.
ANSWER THE QUESTION. IT'S NOT THAT HARD.
xoites defends Constitution @ 39:
True. However, she can practice all the strategery she wants in answering questions but she is getting on my last nerves.
HORRAY FOR RICHARDSON! He answered the question asked to him!
hadenuf @ 29:
That's nice, but if you think Kucinich is going to get the nomination, think again!
I really don't get how Richardson dealt with terrorists and dictators as an ambassador. Every time he opens his mouth in these debates he makes another gaffe.
akmadinajihad IS scary and a liar but the rest of iram may be aproachable
mrogi @ 30:
Exactly. And those permanent military bases won't go unmanned I don't imagine either. Great point.
PurplePatriot @ 52:
Not necessarily. Some actual poor people are landowners in Orange or Chatham county near the new place.
Hilary! Get off of Hope's last nerves! She only has a few left!
I can't stand her because she is pure politician.
As for the Iraq vote they voted for Bush to use force if the weapons inspectors could not disarm him or if he made aggressive moves, etc. It was a good vote at the time, it was NOT a vote for war without condition. Now Bush took it as something else and went out guns blazing without fulfilling the promises and rules of the Senate vote.
How is that the fault of those in the Senate at the time? Lay the blame where it belongs, Bush. Bush should have been impeached for that, sadly it won't happen. Then the republicans controlled everything and now they can't get a majority to decide what to have for lunch.
Why is Tim using the empty promises of Rudy Giuliani as some kind of litmus test? Fuck him.
Go Hillary. She hasn't let his doucheness bump her off her stance.
Vitam Vas @ 42:
Exactly. I'll take Hillary over any repug, I know she won't hire incompetents like Brownie to head important government agencies.
i dont like richardson for pres. he caved on the election fraud issue last election.
xoites defends Constitution @ 63:
So true to both observations. At my house, "hope" has actually left the building.
PurplePatriot @ 52:
Haha, he moved into my rural neighborhood, I didn't move into his!
I haven't seen him at a precinct meeting though.
I must say, there are number of great ideas on that stage. No matter which canidate has them, they all seem to be better than the Republicans, and that's good for the Democrats.
MSNBC still not up, but boy have I watched a bunch of ads.
2013?
Fuck the Dems, unless Kucinich or Richardson get the nod, I'm voting independent!
Scott in Chicago @ 432:
In that case, write in Kucinich.
xoites defends Constitution @ 430:
That is pretty much right away as far as the military goes. It would take that long to coordinate the plans and withdraw all forces.
nativeokie @ 327:
Yeah right. So what about this "experience" thing again? You don't really expect me to believe that you are talking about her six years in the Senate.
She can't have it both ways. Either she gets the experience of being Bill Clinton's wife along with criticism, or she is her own candidate.
xoites defends Constitution @ 433:
Oops! I meant to write that, I just got home and heard what happened tonight, and I got all fired up! :)
SassySandy @ 431:
But can we really just pack and go? First of all having been in Iraq myself I am telling you it would take months to pull out. Well if we simply left all our equipment behind maybe we could do it in 2 months max.
But there really is a problem there. I don't support the US being the only troops there (believe me the other 22 nations are only one or two people hiding in the green zone). The exception was the UK but they are not in a really bad area of the country.
We really screwed these people up with the invasion. Morally we have to help them. Better to use international troops (including us). We might have 20,000 US troops stay along with a 80,000 from the UN. It would be best. We have to rebuild what we destroyed. But until we are no longer the "occupying" force we won't get anything done.
Frybread @ 339:
yeah as long as your 15 or 20 miles away you should be allright..........as long as the wind blows the other way.
