Charges Dropped Against Rev. Yearwood

Remember his arrest at the Petraeus hearing?

CREW:

Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Jr., president of the Hip Hop Caucus and peace activist, announced today that the D.C. Superior Court dismissed charges against him of assaulting a Capitol Police officer while in line to attend a hearing in the House of Representatives. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) represents Rev. Yearwood in his case.

Rev. Yearwood?

Oh nooos he's a Christian we must not like himz.

Sarcasm aside I'm glad to hear the charges have been dropped.

bob's picture

So he gets falsely arrested and charged, the charges get dropped, and we are supposed to be happy?

Meanwhile he WAS stopped from being heard, being seen at the Pet Show. Mission Accomplished.

Another "criminal" walks away scott-free.

So what happens to the storm troopers...errrr....I mean Capitol Police that attacked him?

So will this arrest be erased from his record? I hate this law suit society of ours, but in his case I hope he finds a good lawyer.

Why won't our leaders mention police reform? We Americans are attacked constantly with searches just for looking funny - but most of us don't get on TV. Today you can say "improve the schools" without insult - but if you say "improve the police" then people act like you're unamerican.

Seems the police in general are being raised to the height of the soldiers, if you speak ill of them you aren't being patriotic or American. There are limits on their actions and they should be held to those limits, military and police. The police, or some of them, seem to be eager to take advantage of their position. As long as there are no repercussions that number will grow.

I'm glad the good Reverend was able to extracate himself from the obviously trumped charge and our pay-to-play legal system of chicanery and collusion, but I must remind him that it isn't a case of Black vs. White justice anymore. I can't figure how gottbaum choked trying to remove her handcuffs. Try as I might, I can't wrap my arm around my own neck while trying to dislocate my shoulder so I can reverse both elbows and bring my arms either over my head or under my ass.

I also can't figure how that could possibly be an explanation promulgated by an idiotic media. Ms. Gottbaum was snatched at the airport for arguing with 'someone official'. From what I read of airport security these days, I'm guessing they messed her up pretty bad and came up with the explanation later.

Re the experience of Janet @ 30's daughter, everybody take note: if you travel in riveted jeans, wear sensible underwear. Then you can remove your pants and give them to the little tinpot godlings to put through the scanner while you proceed through the metal detector.

Exhibitionists may prefer frilly or skimpy, but it's all about carrying it off with dignity in front of the largest audience possible in order to shame the arrogant, incompetent pricks publicly. I'm serious.

Remember how your mother said you should always wear clean underwear in case you got run over? This is the 21st century version.

Storm trooper? Come one, now, I'm not sure of that.

But it IS clear that the security there is crap. They should have leveled with him early on, not argue with him. Either he is perceived as a threat or not. If he is, GET HIM AWAY ASAP -- safely (for him and everyone else). If he isn't, ignore him.

Just terrible security. By failing to understand and control the situation EARLY, someone got hurt. Directly or indirectly, it is the officers' fault and they should pay. (Although the "right" answer might be better training.)

We DO need security for our public officials (yes, even Petrayus  ) do we not? The only question is how should they act.

Side note: What do you want to bet this trend gets a whooole lot worse before it gets better. We've got some poor messed up souls in the mercenaries and regular army in Iraq that we are denying the proper mental care and respect. It is likely they will work in civilian security or police when they get back. Duck.

Having met Rev. Yearwood on two occasions, I must say this is a happy day for me. I hope Cindy, Dede, and their aide also get the same consideration.

I've also met members of Code Pink, VFP, IVAW, Jena 6, and others. These are brave people doing courageous things in front of people who would be quite happy to see them disappear. They deserve our support.

Gotbaum kin's plea before dying: I'm not a terrorist!
BY SOO YOUN in Phoenix and ETHAN ROUEN and ADAM LISBERG in New York
DAILY NEWS WRITERS

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, at corner of 81st St. and Central Park West, reads statement on the death of Carol Anne Gotbaum (below).

Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, at corner of 81st St. and Central Park West, reads statement on the death of Carol Anne Gotbaum (below).

The daughter-in-law of one of New York's top officials screamed, "I'm not a terrorist!" and fought with security officials in the Phoenix airport before being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed, witnesses told the Daily News yesterday.

Carol Anne Gotbaum, 45, of the upper West Side, died less than an hour later, after cops claim she apparently strangled herself while trying to escape from the handcuffs in a holding cell at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

"I'm not a terrorist! I'm a sick mom! I need help!" yelled the mother of three after she missed the 2:58 p.m. US Airways Express flight to Tucson, said airport workers who witnessed the confrontation Friday.

They said one cop put his knee in her back to restrain her while others grabbed her flailing arms.

"I believe she was a little not-there. She kept punching. She kept screaming. She kept kicking," one worker told The News. "She looked really scared, really frightened. I think she was afraid to go to jail."

Gotbaum's husband, Noah, is the son of longtime city labor leader Victor Gotbaum and the stepson of his wife, Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, a possible candidate for mayor in 2009.

Betsy Gotbaum said her stunned family was still searching for answers in the sudden death.

"Carol was a wonderful, wonderful person," Betsy Gotbaum said. "She was a wonderful mother. She was sweet and kind and loving. At this moment, we are awaiting the results of the investigation."

Cops said Gotbaum was traveling alone and could not explain why she was in Phoenix or what prompted her anger. She was charged with disorderly conduct.

Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Andy Hill said Gotbaum kept screaming after she was placed in the holding cell, until cops realized she had been silent for several minutes and found her unresponsive. The county medical examiner has not determined a cause of death.

"The longest she was alone was five or 10 minutes," Hill said.

She was handcuffed behind her back, Hill said.

But he couldn't immediately explain why a distressed woman was left alone in handcuffs while seven police officers were in the security office.

It wouldn't surprise me if what breaks it open is a series of deaths in police custody similar to what was happening a lot in South Africa years ago during the anti-apartheid days. Those were the days when a guy would be handcuffed to a chair and then die from "accidentally" falling down a flight of stairs. The South African Police Service earned their vicious reputation and they still have it. Amnesty International still has yearly reports that suggest that the SA Police Services are going more then a little overboard with their tactics (I remember one that cited electrocutions happening in police custody). It's sad that we're moving in that direction and it will probably take a high profile death (an American Steve Biko perhaps?) to make people at least attempt to institute reforms in the law enforcement sector.
