Mike's Blog Round Up
By Mike Finnigan Sunday Sep 30, 2007 10:00amOnce again, today's Blog Roundup is brought to you by Steven and the alert uniformed attendants at The Opinion Mill. Keep those digital cards and letters coming to steve[dot]theopinionmill[at
Turns out that at Columbia University they just loves them some dictators. Considering who else was being greeted with open arms, it makes you wonder why Lee Bollinger was so eager to harsh out the vibe for Iranian President Unpronounceable.
Children's health? It's all just politics to this "moderate" Rethuglican.
Mark McDonald visits Wikipedia and finds yet another battle line in the endless conservative war against reality.
John Holbo tries to parse Michael Medved's views on slavery and ends up scratching his head. Field Negro cuts to the chase and reaches the conclusion that Medved is a racist winger hack with entirely too much company in the mainstream.
If you don't mind stepping away from political issues for a moment, here's one of the most poignant blog posts you'll ever read -- about a very human moment between a store employee and a customer with a very personal question.
THE BOOK NOOK: Unfortunately for Clarence Thomas, his whiny, petulant, foot-stamping tantrum of a memoir is coming out the same time as Jeff Toobin's Supreme Court book The Nine, in which we learn that even Antonin "Evil Genius" Scalia considers Thomas more than a bit of a flake. How long before the Thomas book turns up as a $1 giveaway from NewsMax?
HOLY CRAP: Rudy and Jesus, not so perfect together. Neocons and Christianist nutters, perfect together. Here's a Garden State winger who has his own ideas about other people's families (gays, needless to say, are not invited). And the Dominionists threw themselves a party in Salt Lake City -- are you wondering why you weren't invited?

Want the real truth about Clarence Thomas. Read "Supreme Discomfort" (which published back in May).
The authors wrote the book with the intention of making Clarence Thomas "sympathetic" to readers, especially African-American readers. They state in the Preface to the book that every time they found facts that would make Clarence "sympathetic", they would also find additional facts that countered that sympathy and see him for the whiney, petulant, still-holding-grudges-after-20years SOB that he really is.
I read the Washington Post's article about Clarence Thomas' memoir with a combination of disbelief and outrage. It took THREE reviewers to write it?! (Kevin Merida, I believe, is African-American; I don't know about the others. Did the WP require a black writer to lend gravitas? If so, none lent...) And Thomas got $1.5 million for less than 300 pages? I'd call Thomas, now and always, a whiny-a**ed t*tty-baby, if this phrase were not defamatory to actual infants. Thomas certainly wasn't the only student so poor in college as to attempt to sell blood (I did), but the fact that he was refused because his pulse was "too low" reinforces my belief that Clarence Thomas is part-lizard. Tssss. Remainder shelf, here it comes!
Our addition: Stephen Colbert Predicted the Bush years: in 2000! Video!
"No, I'm getting more of a 'Nam vibe...."
So dittoheads are constantly trying to sanitize the wikipedia entry on Rush Limbaugh?
I think there are some people here who may be happy to rectify that error.
DrexelDems @ 3:
Classic.
FYI, Mann Coulter is releasing yet another hate another hate-filled ranting book tomorrow. Be prepared for the reich-wing MSM to bend over to kiss his arse all week. I'm predicting no fewer than 5 appearances on faux this week.
Ouch, I need more coffee....
Take two: **FYI, Mann Coulter is releasing yet another hate-filled, ranting book tomorrow.**
Thanks for the links to the Medved obscenities and their critiques. Just wanted to mention that there is a small but organized group of white folks speaking up on these issues, including CURE, which actively supports reparations. We gave a point by point response to a similar screed by David Horowitz a few years back in a book we have published.

If the cynic in you whispers in your ear, "Ignore this," don't listen to it. This is a story of what genuine compassion in action looks like.
Michael Medved's piece on slavery is so profoundly wrong, on so many levels. I feel
dirtyfilthy for having read it. He thinks he is being reasonable or scholarly? The only thing he has achieved is to let us have a good look at a twisted mind and a degraded soul - his own.I have just received a lesson on the banality of evil.
Thank you for the link to Mark McDonald's article on Wikipedia. I had no idea that is how that site worked. I used to think of it as a great reference site but knowing the site can be altered to reflect a slanted political viewpoint changes my opinion. I will still use it for quick reference but will pay more attention on the political items.
Wonderful job, Steven....
In light of Seymour's recent The administration and their apologists are hard at work making the case for war. I’ve never seen such a coordinated and aggressive effort at starting a pre-emptive war. This may even go past the initial steps leading towards the war with Iraq…
Look at how explicit FOX News is in their desire for war. They ran an entire special making the case for military action. If you cant see all of these clips at least watch the preview - more people need to know about this propaganda effort:

Bollinger, Medved and Thomas would make a nice threesome, don't you think? It is incredible, the number of crazy, wacko, morality level-nil people that make up the right. They seem to be completely unaware that the way that they live their lives is counter to the crap they spew. These people are delusional and should seek treatment.
Thanks for sharing the poignant blog post. Nice to know that this level of kindness and concern for another person still exists.
