Flashback to 2002: Your media working hard for war.
Jonathon Schwartz gives us another example of how the insane lust for war turns into gold for the Jefferey Goldberg's of the beltway class and then of course, there are no consequences. It's mind-boggling. I can't say this often enough. We need to shame these journalists every chance we get so that their words have consequences.
A Tiny Revolution: Here's Jeffrey Goldberg, then a staff writer at the New Yorker, participating in a debate on Iraq in Slate on October 3, 2002. That was five years ago today:
The administration is planning today to launch what many people would undoubtedly call a short-sighted and inexcusable act of aggression. In five years, however, I believe that the coming invasion of Iraq will be remembered as an act of profound morality...read on
And Andrew Sullivan was cheering him on....

..a profound act of IMmorality..
True
PNAAC Minister @ 1:
Thanks, took the words out of my mouth.
Americans are bored.
They were raised to expect constant stimulation.
War is entertainment.
People both left and right lap it up.
And discuss it in their NYC apartments.
And then go off to their jobs making money.
Boy, talk about a bad sense of timing....
Andrew Sullivan has got to be the biggest flip-flopper of all time. The maddening thing is that he NEVER apologizes to those he demonized. He portrayed the liberal Left as part of an evil fifth column. He aligned himself with the most extreme elements of the Right like FreeRepublic, yet has never disassociated himself from his absurd logic at the time.
Idiots still control us.
VietVet8666 @ 3:
I didn't realize that all 300+ million Americans live in NYC.
The MSM was part of the plan to rally support for the war. Any opposition was always in the back pages of the publication. Now, many of them are trying to rally support to invade Iran.
It's the same old BS over and over again! Nothing changes day after day. It's not fooling anyone and it is repulsive already. There is no sense in watching the crap because they only place you can get the real news is on the net. Thank God for that!
PS They did the same type of stunt with that Blackwater rescue too.
Kiki @ 9:
Yeah the net but it's still the same repulsive crap.
The whole country is up to it's nose in CRAP.
"idiots still control us"
You almost took the words right out of my mouth. Idiots are still in charge. It's a quibble, I know.
The machiery of the status quo is working harder every year. We can only hope that the time will come when it will not be able to work hard enough to keep up the chirade.
"Taxes are not levied for the benefit of the taxpayers" - Robert A. Heinlein
One more thing: War is not entertainment, it's big business. Follow the money.
blue at 7
sorry
didn't mean any offense
just have an NYC orientation
Bascombe....you were right.
The U.S. government always has exploited young idealists.
VietVet8666 @ 16:
Actually age and ruthlessness has always exploited youth and idealism. Not just the government.

WATERLOO, Iowa - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says he no longer wears an American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for "true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Very true. An American Flag pin on the lapel of a sports-coat immediately pigeon-hole's one as a hard-right ideologue or a "Ditto-head". Similarly, an American flag bumper sticker identifies one as a Bush-supporter as surely as a "yellow ribbon" car-magnet. In other words, the flag has lost its original meaning and no longer includes the values of all the people. It is entirely the province of Christian fundamentalists, neocons, super-nationalists, and war-mongers.
It has morphed into the mottled image of its corporate owners; a ruddy, savage emblem of marching armies, windowless jail cells, and sneering, well-groomed men in blue suits.
The flag has fallen from its once lofty perch and merged with the sludge of corporate profiteering, calculated sadism and pre-emptive war.
L.A. Confidential @ 18:
The flag isnt the only thing that has fallen from its once lofty perch; our entire country has!! God damn those warmongers to hell!!
L.A. Confidential @ 6:
What does that make us?What can we do to break the evil bond of the criminal idiots? my wife has a friend who has lived in Equador for the last several years and who likes it a lot.
L.A. Confidential @ 18:
and hes just now finding that out, the guys cluelss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
L.A. Confidential @ 17:
Bring back the military draft. Make the draft age a minimum of 45 years old, for both men and women, and let's see how fast we go to war.
L.A. Confidential @ 18:
I know this is OT but, there are still many people who see the flag as a symbol of what our country can and should be.
The flag hangs by the front door of our home, even lit at night, just as a reminder that what we have as Americans is precious. I believe this flag symbolizes every right that I have as an American. It also, reminds me that I have to stay vigilant so, that no one, even in the name of freedom, tries to take those rights from me. Yes, even the right to desecrate this symbol of the country I love so much.
I don't care whether or not someone wears a flag lapel pin, t-shirt, moo moo, motorcycle jacket. Don't even start. Just don't get between me and the rights this flag represent.
"In five years, however, I believe that the coming invasion of Iraq will be remembered as an act of profound morality"
They have medication and psych wards for that kind of pompasity.
bedwetters leading other people's kids to slaughter with their keyboards fresh from the Pravda factory
Who were/are these people?
They love the retard Bush.
They hate you.
Who were/are these people?
Wow, Goldberg's prescience is scary. Let's hope he doesn't say something that would really be good for the world regarding the next 5 years.
Will Sullivan cheer on the coming war with Iran with the same fervor he gave to the invasion of Iraq?
Goldberg and Sullivan need to fight much harder in order to extricate their craniums from their anal orifices or become endanger of asphyxiating on their own excrement.
It makes me sad to watch them struggle so...
Someone put them out of my misery please.
Moral war? I've walked through the mirror and it shattered behind me.
A 'Then and Now' quote compilation from the war cheerleaders is due, this is a good one.
I remember the local news here in Los Angeles just before Bush's rape of Iraq was to begin, they were showing a map of Iraq and how it was going to be invaded and bombed, as if a weather system was moving in. I regret not recording it, but I was in shock and what they were saying and how animated and unreal it was. The guy was delivering this info just like how they describe the weather: "Ok folks, looks like we're gonna have some light cluster bombs in this region, heavy bunker busters here, here and around here, with combat troops pouring in from the south and air lifts directly into Bhagdad ....".
Jeff Goldberg is a former prison guard.
Can you say human pond scum? I knew that you could.
In defense of Andrew Sullivan, he's admitted he was wrong and has become a very vocal critic of the hard right.
He saw the light once they started telling him that he has no rights as a homosexual.
Sullivan doesn't seem to like Iran but he hasn't been cheerleading a war either.
BTW - I am not a rightie, just somebody who reads everything both sides put out.
