Mike's Blog Round Up

Happy Thursday to all!

By now most of you know this, but to newbies this is Alex, guest-hosting the roundup while neglecting my own malenky blog, Martini Revolution.

A little terse, after attending to an ailing parent yesterday, so let's jump right in:

The nets react to Hillary Clinton – she obviously has not won everyone over, though some of her recent remarks were clearly taken out of context.

The new GOP Convention logo undergoes much-needed changes to reflect the Cult of Bush/Cheney's obvious devotion to the Old Ones from the Nameless Void.

While, unlike the GOP, she is not a devotee to Cthulhu, Echidne expands on the use of fear (of He from the nameless void?) as a weapon by the Bush cult.

Speaking of fear, there's lots of fear in Iraq, especially of foreign mercenaries acting with impunity on Iraqi soil. Sid Blumenthal explains how this came to be.

Finally, Bush demands blanket amnesty for the undisclosed criminal actions of telecom companies who complied with his illegal orders. Speaking of criminal actions, Alberto Gonzales lawyers up while reportedly facing possible charges of lying to Congress.

Especially sorry today to those who submitted links yesterday, but things were a little hectic in this corner of Blogtopia. If you have anything you'd like to submit for the blog roundup, drop an email to alexde AT gmail DOT com.

I just heard, I believe it was a town in New Jersey or Delaware, that some local council people are concerned that terrorist may have poisoned some gumballs to try to kill the kids there. No poisoned gumballs have been found, but several dozen unlicensed gumball dispensers have been found.

I swear I heard this on MSNBC

CLEVELAND - A high school student said Thursday that he and classmates had warned their principal about threats by a classmate who shot and wounded four people before killing himself, and believed the attack could have been prevented.

The student, Rasheem Smith, said on CBS’ “Early Show” that despite their warnings about the student who opened fire Wednesday, Asa H. Coon, principal Johneita Durant told them she was too busy.

Smith said that the shooting may have been prevented, and that it was known Coon had a gun. “He was talking about doing it last week,” he said.

The only thing that's relevant is the claim to have a gun or guns and issuing threats.

White, black, goth, preppy, black school ... that's irrelevant.

There's also a mention of the suspect 'being punched in the face' because he bumped into someone coming out of the bathroom.

The terrorists are already killing our children in droves. They are our sons and daughters serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The sad thing about the OMG!t3rR0r1$ts$!Phe@r! meme is that those who have become convinced that there really is a threat of Shari'a In Your Hometown can't get past it. It's a siege mentality (can't wait for the whole War on Christmas season to get started).

Bascombe, I feel safer knowing the gumball plot has been foiled, even before it began. ;)

Now I'm sitting here looking at the box of tissues that is sitting on my desk. Those tissues could have something terrorist-ie in them and maybe they are trying to kill me right here and right now. Just can't be too careful or too imaginative these days.

Is there any connection not just to the over-availability of firearms, but also to the whole "Don't Snitch," phenomena?

The irony of the 'don't snitch' stuff being played in the gangsta crowd is that it applies to the GOP so well.

I don't see why we persist in this illusion of having these things called 'schools' - let's just rename them what they are, prisons, institute all the guards, metal detectors, drug tests, and locker searches to Make Sure Our Kids Are Safe, fire all the teachers, replace them with armed guards and Rottweilers, and let 'em know they'll get out in eighteen years. Maybe.

talk about weird stuff like poisoned gumballs. The Government has their own weird stuff out there that they are doing like insect spy robots that hover around anti-war protests. the UK's Telegraph has an interesting article on it today as well as picture of the one of the robots:

US accused of making insect spy robots

"The US government has been accused of secretly developing robotic insect spies amid reports of bizarre flying objects hovering in the air above anti-war protests."

Why is the rest irrelevant?

Because it's a statistic that, while descriptive of the suspect, doesn't address the motive or means.

The implicit association of 'black trenchcoat' and 'school shooting' is something the media does routinely - look for the items that help demonize the suspect as a bad or wrong-headed person.

And having grown up as a Dungeons & Dragons playing, calculator & pocket-protector wearing, card-carrying geek, it bothers me when school shootings are portrayed as the lone weirdo in the midst of some ideal community, where no one ever said or did anything that could possibly cause such a disproportionate reaction.

Not playing blame the victim, just saying we need to be mindful of the environment.

the reason why I mentioned the goth clothing is because it is what the columbine kids were wearing.

get it?

and he threatened people for a period of time.

and it was reported.

and it was ignored.

get it yet?

it all works together as a chain of events and circumstances which was a repeat of things which happened before and evinced a pattern leading to a repeat of events which happened before.

now, here you are, "not blaming the victim", when a principal looking at the record of that kid and listening to complaints and taking them seriously and acting on the reports of threats c(w)ould have prevented there from being any victims to blame in the first place!

but since you play dungeons and dragons, apparently YOU just don't get it!

it must be the environment, like columbine, or va tech, right?
what is it about the "environment" that we need to be mindful of?

Giving blanket amnesty to telecom companies whom Bush pressured to break the laws of this country is tantamount to "aiding and abetting criminal activity" and, if Congress permits this, the citizens need to mount a class action lawsuit against EVERY congressman and the White House for violating our laws.

This reeks the same bullshit as the Blackwater deal which Bremer sneaked under the wire - amnesty for them and carte blanche to murder anyone they desire without the fear of a trial and punishment.

This capricious violation of the laws of this country stinks! It's time to impeach the largest criminals in the country right now - Bush and Cheney. They're totally anit-american in every way. Fascist dictator and sidekick pig.

What these republiscum pigs are doing to this 12 year old is something which rapists have done for decades and it's called 'DARVO' - Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender. It's a scumbag tactic and totally reprehensible that our own representatives and mouthpieces of this Fascist Regime continue to show themselves as hypocrites, liars, murderers, and sleaze - and right in our faces. It's time to take back this country of ours or suffer the consequences of anarchy.

the reason why I mentioned the goth clothing is because it is what the columbine kids were wearing.

get it?

So? Klebold and Harris could have been wearing yellow rain slickers and carrying pink parasols. It's not the clothing that causes the violence.

and he threatened people for a period of time.

and it was reported.

and it was ignored.

So? I admittedly went to high school long before goth was a fashion choice (on top of which, the school had a strict dress code) ... but a pattern of threats, and the choice of administrators to ignore them has nothing to do with the suspect being goth or not.

it all works together as a chain of events and circumstances which was a repeat of things which happened before and evinced a pattern leading to a repeat of events which happened before.

Right. These kids just get the idea to shoot things up from evil videogames, goth subculture, roleplaying games, or death metal.

Which apparently means I should be a knuckle-dragging barbarian dressed in mammoth furs and lugging a halberd around. Or maybe lurking on forums with the handle 'MasterChief909991234.'

now, here you are, "not blaming the victim", when a principal looking at the record of that kid and listening to complaints and taking them seriously and acting on the reports of threats c(w)ould have prevented there from being any victims to blame in the first place!

How you get from my 'not blaming the victim' to 'principal should have acted seriously' is a twister. I never said they should have ignored things.

but since you play dungeons and dragons, apparently YOU just don't get it!

it must be the environment, like columbine, or va tech, right?
what is it about the "environment" that we need to be mindful of?

Oh, I don't know ... things like punching another student in the face when he bumps into you? You don't find that odd?

None of this stuff happens in a vacuum. We're ready to whip out the grief counselors and padded corners for the kids AFTER someone's gone on a bender with a gun, but we're not paying attention to the environment that's producing it.

In my book, that means counselors kids feel comfortable with approaching BEFORE they get suicidally depressed. It means treating kids like they're approaching adulthood, instead of hopeless screw-ups that need to be drug-tested and wanded at the door. It means outreach, not ignoring things and hoping nothing blows up for four years.

It means asking questions about how a clinically depressed teenager with a past suicide attempt in his file had access to guns. If it turns out they were from home, it seems school administrators weren't the only ones with blinders on.

You seem to be claiming the student's goth affectations have something to do with his decisions to pick up a gun and go on a shooting spree.

That claim is based on 'Klebold and Harris were dressed like goths at Columbine.'

Support that claim with facts, and maybe there will be something to 'get' - otherwise, your premise is about as valid as 'wearing a flag pin means you're a true patriot'.

Evidience of illegal rendition as policy, proven by the Canadian Govt. paying reperation for their part in it.

Evidence of war crimes commited in Gitmo, proven by the documented case of a minor of Canadian nationality held pending military trial for 6 years. Physical wounds incured prior to his capture and irreprebale psycological damage to the individual has been widely reported.

These are 2 examples of the many incidents of documented criminal activity.

Tell Hill we know what is going on and to ignore it implies complicity.
