I love having Stephen Colbert to divine the logic (or lack thereof) of the conservative mind. We members of the reality-based community might have watched Ted Koppel's special on prisons, Breaking Point, and thought that we need to create some reforms to solve the crazy overcrowding and mandatory jail sentencing laws that have brought California's penal system to its knees. Not so, our man Colbert thinks. It's a missed opportunity to reform America to greatness...by getting rid of most Americans.

Nation, this is appalling. If 2,000,000 Americans are in prison, that means 298,000,000 Americans are roaming the streets and I personally believe that most people are just criminals who are too lazy to commit their crimes. When this country was founded, there were only 4,000,000 American citizens. If we want to make this country great, we need to get back to those manageable numbers. And the best way to do that is to put as many people in jail as possible. It will be like they disappeared!
