Open Thread - If You Call Carbon Dioxide, "Life"...
By bluegal Friday Oct 12, 2007 10:30pm...please take a sweet draw on the tailpipe of my minivan...
Love and linkage to Media Bloodhound, who sent me this Youtube, and comments: "Nothing bought the crazy more than these [2006] commercials. These Competitive Enterprise Institute*** ads seem worth revisiting in light of Gore's Nobel yesterday: 'Carbon dioxide. They call it pollution. We call it life.'"
If Al Gore and those so-called "scientists" had just adopted this "run the camera backwards" solution to global warming, they woulda won their Nobel and saved a few more glaciers years ago.
***Who the hell are these people, and why is Exxon Mobil funding them? Just guessing, actually. Google google....oops sorry
it's Ford Motor Company. Let the record stand corrected.
Open thread below. Don't do too much CO2 before you post. "Life" is precious!

Farts are the real threat to the planet . . . . billions of cow farts . . . . melting the polar ice caps.
Global warming doesn't care if you believe in or not . . . and if it is caused by humans, we're not going to anything about it.
There's this little thing called positive feedback . . . . oceans get warmer . . . they start releasing frozen methane . . .
Ocean farts . . .
And I had chili with beans tonight . . . my apologies.
Yes yes the earth will never reach its carrying capacity. You can cram as many people you want in a small a space as possible, give them all internal combustion engines and tell them to throw away as much as possible, and there will never be any adverse effects to the environment. On the contrary, our planet loves people, the more the better.
But according to the Mormons, aren't there only about a 100,000 places in heaven? Where do the rest of us go?
and to get the full story, please visit the "creation museum" sponsored by every ignorant christian reich wingnut. be sure and ride the dinosaurs, because we all know they were there just for adam and eve to get the hell out of eden. lol lol
Ok so what is it that we breath out and what is it that comes out of the back end of a car?
These folks should try sticking their heads in a plastic bag for an hour so the rest of us can get on with reality.
Carbon Dioxide: It was the official cause of DEATH!
Oh see, now you put up an open thread, the muscle relaxants andvicodan have kicked in...I wait all night...ok so it's only 8:44 on a saturdayday night....Charlie Rose, EriK Prince and George Clooney...Prince called Clooney...seriously, Prince is a douche. He'll save poor, suffering brown folk...for the right price. I find it interesting Clooney didn't utter a peep during the hearings. It still amazes me, conservatives think they have the moral high ground.

The Democrats and Republicans are blowing a lot of smoke out of thier arses (may or may not contribute to global warming) and Cindy Sheehan thinks Nancy Pelosi is talking out of her arse quite a bit...
Nancy Pelosi and the Arrogance of Power: Leadership Void
CINDY SHEEHAN
Counterpunch
Saturday October 13, 2007
"They are advocates. We are leaders." - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in regards to "Anti-war activists."
People of America, this is truly the problem with what was once a Representative Republic and now is a country run by "elected" officials who believe that they, individually and collectively, are above any accountability and are not answerable to their constituents. Our public servants erroneously believe that they are the leaders!
Ms. Pelosi made this statement to a group of reporters at a luncheon recently and she also went off on activists who have been participating in vigils outside of her chi-chi home in the Pacific Heights district of San Francisco. The people who are vigiling outside her house regularly, in a Pelosi Watch are only exercising their rights as American citizens to make their concerns known to a Rep who was elected from a district that is wholeheartedly against the occupation of Iraq and for impeaching the liars who got us into the illegal and immoral situation.
No, Ms. Pelosi, you are not a leader. You have proven time and again in what you laughably believe is a "mistake" free run as Speaker of a Democratic House that you will do anything to protect an Imperial Presidency to the detriment of this Nation and the world, particularly the people of Iraq and Afghanistan....

Hydrocarbons react with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight and elevated temperatures to form ground-level ozone. It can cause eye irritation, coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath and can lead to permanent lung damage.
Nitrogen oxides (NOx) also contribute to the formation of ozone and contribute to the formation of acid rain and to water quality problems.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, deadly gas. It reduces the flow of oxygen in the bloodstream and can impair mental functions and visual perception. In urban areas, motor vehicles are responsible for as much as 90 percent of carbon monoxide in the air.
Motor vehicles also emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, which has potential to trap the Earth's heat and cause global warning.
Why do you ask?

Sounds as harmless as Aspertame is made from the same ingredients as bananas and milk.
Carcinogenic as hell but otherwise harmless.
Here is an experiment: Go camping. Pitch a tent, close the flaps and go to sleep for eight hours. What do you wake up to? Heat and moisture and lots of it. If you left out the ice cream it has run out under the tent. It could be 30 degrees outside but you would get the same result.
Is anyone else watching this show Kid Nation? Each week, the town council, made up of four kids, chooses one kid who has been instrumental in helping the town to win a $20,000 gold star to pay for their future. Four kids have won so far, and three of them are all from the "green" team, the one that most often loses at the physical challenges that determine what "class" they will be in and how much money they "earn" for their designation. The three kids that have won so far from the green team
are all obvious liberals, including possibly the leader of the team, who is on the town council. The fourth star winner, a younger kid, won because it was her birthday and the council didn't want her to leave town.
It's funny. They never win, but the green team folks, who are most likely to take the lead and help the town, get all the praise and win the prizes. Sounds Gore-ily familiar.
[O]verall, is the Greenland Ice Sheet growing or shrinking? Computer models predicted that as Earth’s temperature rose, the ice sheet would thin and retreat around its margin. Yet, counter-intuitively, the models also predicted that the warmer temperatures would cause snowfall to increase in Greenland’s highland interior so that the ice sheet would actually grow thicker there. -- http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Study/Greenland/greenland.html
Article in this link uses the "Recent Ice-Sheet Growth in the Interior of Greenland" paper as a reference.

Just found this story in the Birmingham News that made me feel like sharing...made me feel like maybe people are starting to see the light.
Ron Paul takes Jefferson County GOP straw poll
(Birmingham, Alabama) U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, won the Jefferson County Republican Party's straw poll for president, held Saturday at the Birmingham Zoo.
Paul took 115 votes of 199 for about 57 percent of total ballots cast.
Alabama native Fred Thompson came in second with 31 votes, followed by Rudy Giuliani with 18 votes and Mitt Romney with 16.
Paul supporters began the day at Colonial Brookwood Village mall with a caravan to the straw poll.

did anyone else notice the use of the word "force" in the line - at 00:35 "Let's force people to cut back they say...".
this "force" that they speak of, would be similar to what?
the force of a 3 week old birch sapling on the leg of a passing grizzly bear?
am i to hate the man on the bicycle?
in the video he is riding his bike in the rain.
does this represent my lonely soul if i were to join forces with the evil forces of a healthy planet?
i'm lost here.

jack jett @ 20:
Yes, there most definitely is. In fact not only do cows contribute greatly to global warming but they also drink enough water in their life time to displace an aircraft carrier and they consume five times the amount of protien that they produce once slaughtered and sent off to market.
I did a little research on greenhouse gasses.95% of the gasses are water vapor,2% are methane gas...the rest are a mix.......turns out landfills and giant pig farms are a big problem...ofcourse industry and automobles contribute....what ever the cause...the result will kill us all...sooner or later.

No, if you look closer he is riding it in the snow and it is raining. Image is everything. I heard a corporate spokesperson say that.

Even if the "as polluted as we wanna be" crowd was correct and there wasn't enough evidence for global warming, could they at least show a sense of urgency for getting on board with green energy and making sure the rest of the world doesn't industrialize with fossil fuels and in the obviously wasteful way that we did?

Yes, in fact every single shuttle mission that goes up is a military mission. They don't talk about it but it has been going on since the first shuttle went up.
Yea I remember there used to be a big distinction between military shuttle flights and non military. they used to announce the military flights but shroud them in secrecy. Now they don't announce them and shroud every shuttle flight in bullshit.
Why the hell would we give this political Hack, this hollywood suckup, this statue with lips a peace prize. He is getting rich off of something he calls a planetary emergency. Multiple houses, private jets... what a tool
I'll tell you who deserves a peace award, our brave men of the military. How about Lt. Michael P. Murphy who won the medal of honor posthumously for his bravery in Iraq.
It's a freakin joke and a tragedy.
Gore told the world in his Academy Award-winning movie to expect 20-foot sea-level rises over this century. He ignores the findings of his Nobel co-winners, who conclude that sea levels will rise between only a half-foot and two feet over this century, with their best expectation being about one foot. That's similar to what the world experienced over the past 150 years.
Gore agonizes over the accelerated melting of ice in Greenland and what it means for the planet, but overlooks the IPCC's conclusion that, if sustained, the current rate of melting would add just 3 inches to the sea-level rise by the end of the century. Gore also takes no notice of research showing that Greenland's temperatures were higher in 1941 than they are today.
He loses sleep over a predicted rise in heat-related deaths. There's another side of the story that's inconvenient to mention: rising temperatures will reduce the number of cold spells, which are a much bigger killer than heat. The best study shows that by 2050, heat will claim 400,000 more lives, but 1.8 million fewer will die because of cold.
Gore is the troll.
I think and I hope that even though we wont be able to go into space, to another planet, in our life time, we could explore distant planets and regions using rovers like the ones on mars, but cheaper and more advanced. There would be thousands of them, each controlled by amateur individuals. We would discover all kinds of things much faster. It would be a fun, public effort to explore space, and the technology is almost off the shelf.

CNN thought that they needed some counterpoint to Al Gore's Nobel Prize, so they invited Marlo Lewis to CNN Newsroom, and never mentioned that CEI is funded by Exxon Mobil, or that Lewis isn't a scientist, but has degrees in government and political science. BigKAD our fine soldiers are following commands and reacting to war the way soldiers would from any other country. They make our country fine. Always have and always will.

Completely agree with Janet. Military winning a peace prize for fighting in an aggressive war based on lies? How more Orwellian can you get?
Commercial flower growers can increase the growth rate of their plants and the length of the stems by using carbon dioxide emitters it their greenhouses. However, if the greenhouse isn't well ventilated the CO2 levels can reach toxic levels and kill all of the plants in the greenhouse. That's one of the problems with CO2 in the atmosphere. Also, animals have a much lower tollerance to CO2 levels.
Curtilingus @ 74:
My solution is for technological mankind to move into space. And let the dirty f*cking hippies have with Earth.
It would appear that over reacting to the comments of trolls really screws up the threads. May i suggest that you get a grip Site Monitors and stop destroying discusions and argument with you totally unreasonable interference? This is two nights in a row where open threads have become total disasters where all discussion has been stopped dead because of unnecessary and unwanted interference. If you think Janet was offended, she wasn't. She is sitting here in the same room with me and we were laughing our asses off. Lighten UP!
[Ok-Sitemonitor]
Well, that was "fun" guess i will go have a conversation with my penis. It loves attention.
Climate change; just a harmless little bunny.
Curtilingus @ 69:
But in a few years those deserts would just become alkali flats where nothing will grow. There are salts and heavy metals in the rocks in the desert soil. They are water soluable and as they build up the soil become toxic. It's even worse if you add fertilizer. Most deserts don't have a drainage system, and even if they did, the toxic material would just move down stream a bit. You might be able to desalinate enough water to irrigate, but not enough to create a free flowing river to drain the toxins.
Anti-Global Warming Propaganda:
"that's what several studies supposedly found, but other scientific studies found exactly the opposite"
Watch the framing and spinning: GWT:"several", as in a few, "supposedly" as in not peer-reviewed and supported. Opposition: "scientific"
Um, in reality as opposed to Wingnutistan, 1000's of peer-reviewed scientific studies support not only global warming, but man-induced global warming, while a handful of questionable articles disagree.
As usual, Wingnuts have chosen the opposite side of existence from reality.
Thing Fish @ 72:
There is growing evidence of a global shading effect caused by particulates in the atmosphere. Scientists are now beginning to speculate that this global shading accounts for the errors in their CO2 warming models. These CO2 models have been predicting far faster warming then we are seeing. All we need to do is to launch really big umbrellas into space to enhance the shading effect.
118 Paw Paw Negro Blowtorch
Yeah I lost my posts also (sigh). I think it was just server glitches as my posts have never been intentionally deleted, but maybe the site monitors are tired of me. Anyway, my point is there are people in every generation that are convinced humanity is coming to an end and that we are the cause. Events have a way of working out. I'm with Dr. Bill Gray on this one - sometime in the future we'll look back on AGW and see it was foolish it all was.
"Global warming" needs a new, less benign term. "Catastrophic climate change" maybe. Because the real risk is not only rising ocean levels and a loss of coastal cities, but a loss of earth's good farming land. Even if humans might not be causing it, we can't afford to take the risk.

xoites defends Constitution @ 57:
That's like asking the illiterate to read.
The main problem with grazing animals and the CO2 they produce is that they are now being raised in areas where there used to be forests, like the Amazon. Amazon tribes and native people from other tropical climates used slash and burn agriculture to grow their crops. They'd burned a section of the forest, grow their crops then abandon when the area when the nutrients supplied by the act of burning the forest ran out and the forest returned.
Now, when loggers clear the forest, cattle ranchers move in and what was forest that used CO2 and produced Oxygen remains grassland. The practice is throwing the whole system outta balance. There have always been vast herds of grazing animals on grasslands around the world. I don't imagine that cow farts are any more toxic than bison farts. Just imagine the contribution of the megafauna that used to roam North America. Those herds all stuck to natural grasslands.
This isn't really a new process. Much of the middle east has been transformed by grazing livestock, mostly sheep and goats. The Mediterranean forests that can still be found in the former Yugoslavia, used to cover Italy, Greece and the rest of the Mediterranean area.
I'm seeing a lot of confusion between Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide. (CO2 and CO respectively) While it is true that tail-pipe exhaust contains Carbon Dioxide, it contains much more Carbon Monoxide which is a by-product of incomplete combustion. While sucking on a tail-pipe, it is the Carbon Monoxide, a deadly poison, which will kill you. On the other hand, Carbon Dioxide is not poison at all, however it does displace oxygen which you need to live, therefor it is a suffocant,in sufficient quantity it causes you to suffocate. Carbon Dioxide actually is critical to life on earth, we do need a certain amount for plants to breath, it is what they breath in and what we breath out and vice versa -- handy that! There is presently no shortage of CO2, we have way too much in the atmosphere, we also have too much CO -- did anyone notice that the rain forests are burning? Millions of acres are burning as I write this message, due to a three-year drought. That will greatly diminish our levels of oxygen, and increase drastically the levels of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide.
It has been nice living here, but, I am afraid, it just won't be possible for more than one or two more generations of humans -- unless we find other worlds in about 150 years, our species is doomed.
No confusion about CO vs CO2. Just having a little fun at the wingnuts' expense.
Do a basic study of the atmosphere and ANYONE knows CO2 is important... however, it's part of a BALANCE of greenhouse gasses that regulate temperature. The problem is we're royally messing up that balance. It's incontrovertible... it's basic chemistry... you can't simply change the formula and get the same results. Rush Limbaugh/BillO(w)./Ann Coulter, all these raving mouth-foamers CANNOT alter the course of science. This is meant mostly for the sad trolls, as I doubt a regular reader has a problem comprehending the issues.
Charles @ 85:
5000 years ago the Egyptians figured out that it was a really stupid idea to put buildings on farmland. They always put their buildings where nothing would grow. We haven't figured that out yet, so some of our best farmland is covered by housing tracts, golf courses, and even cities. The solution to recovering that farm land is to remove whatever is there now. We'll probably have to be pretty desperate to do that, but it's possible. Of course, the some of excellent farm land under the Silicon Valley has been rendered toxic by the chemicals used in the industry.
E Ryno @ 2:
It's not just animal farts. Poop. It generates methane, the 2nd largest contributor to global warming. Why? It's the Slaughterhouse Effect. We humans are over breeding and we have bred an unnatural, ginormous population of creatures for meat. The sheer number of animals is overwhelming nature and the environment is paying the price.
"Livestock are responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse-gas emissions as measured in carbon dioxide equivalent, reports the FAO. This includes 9 percent of all CO2 emissions, 37 percent of methane, and 65 percent of nitrous oxide. Altogether, that's more than the emissions caused by transportation. - http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0220/p03s01-ussc.html"

Funny. I remember this being a topic of discussion in 1982, when I was a kid and people really seemed to grasp it. Now, it seems that people want to act on this and others want to deny it and bash the living shit out of people who believe in it.

You have to ask yourself why people would object to what really amounts to cleaning up our act. Why do these people turn into attack dogs at the mere mention of global warming. Clearly it has to do with money. It's gonna hurt someone's bottom line. Short term financial gain is really a pretty poor excuse for taking a chance that the global environment will become pretty intolerable for out kids and grandkids.
Carbon Dioxide is a waste product of animal life. Sure, it's great for plants, but so is manure.
I hope this organization will take a stand on some other problems facing humanity - like drought and hunger. Urine is 97% water, so why are people dying of thirst? And for the starving, well they can just eat shit.

Ok so what comes out of tail pipes is carbon dioxide.
What comes out when we breath?
It's not the same thing right?
Kevin Foster @ 94:
You don't really know what you are talking about. Sorry to be so harsh, but the only thing worse than no information is bad information.
When compared to CO, CO2 may appear to be practically non-toxic. The amount of CO in the tailpipe of a modern automobile averages about 0.5% and the amount of CO2 is 10-30 times that. But you are correct that it's the CO that will kill you - because it is fatally toxic at levels about 200 ppm (or .02%).
It is not correct that CO2 is only dangerous if it displaces the oxygen in the air we breath. In an enclosed space, merely maintaining normal oxygen levels at 20% will not save you if CO2 from respiration is not actively removed (an issue in submarines, air or spacecraft). In fact, at about 3% CO2 can cause serious physiological and mental disturbances. At about 10%, humans cannot maintain consciousness (even with sufficient oxygen), and breathing air with more than 10% CO2 will prove fatal, slowly at that level and very quickly with a few more %.
I'm sure that I was part of this conversation, but I cant find a single one of my posts. Is there some reason for that? I remember what I said. I saw them here yesterday.

Mine too.....gone....*sniff*
From a first year chemistry text book published in 1984: "Carbon dioxide is not an air pollutant in the sense that it causes damage to living or material things. However, the potential effect of rising carbon dioxide levels on the climate is a matter of concern."
This ad just encourages quibbling over whether or not CO2 is a pollutant to avoid addressing the real issue of the increase of atmospheric CO2. A red herring.
Add in the misuse of two studies and the appeal to emotion by implying "they" will make "you" cut back so you have to ride a bike in crappy wet snow and you have a piece of propaganda that is stunningly and embarrassingly full of shit.
Edwin @ 110:
You did have posts here last night. I even replied to one. There was some kind of server error last night and I lost some posts too, but I keep copies so I just reposted.

Why is it that NO comments have been approved for either video?
My guess is that nobody has anything supportive to say about this tripe... I mean misquoting articles and studies... who would expect a right-wing think tank funded by big business and big pharma to be prone to that sort of behavior?

Actually cows naturally dont eat corn, they eat grass. The corn is just cheap for the farmers. Cows fart because their stomachs are upset, from the corn. If we fed them their natural diet of grass we would stop the farting and the cows would stop being the number one eaters of tums to stop the tummy ache. Go google it, its the truth. Grass fed beef is actually good for you, it has the omega 3s in it, from the grass. On the other hand corn has no nutritional value that is why most beef is just fat, and cows fart.
